How To Choose Between Top Golfing Accessories

W

hen you are faced with may different golfing accessories, it can be easy to lose sight of your goals and simply become overwhelmed by all of the different options. If you want to spend your money well and get golf accessories that will come in handy, you should follow some guidelines that I will lay out for you here. It will help you to step back and look objectively at what your ultimate goal is. Hopefully, as a result of your careful research you will save some money and end up making the best choice when it comes to choosing the accessories that are best for you.

First you need to assess how useful the item can be. Will it actually make your game of golf more enjoyable, or is it more of a novelty that will soon wear off? If you aren’t buying an item for its utility, you will have to seriously think about why else you could want it. Are you hoping to impress your golfing buddies, or do you just feel the obsessive need to spend money on golf and its many accessories? Items like golf club bags will always be useful since they help to keep your other big investments save and organized for you. However, the same can’t be said for other golf accessories. Some are just a waste of money that reel you in because of how neat they are. One day when you go to the golf course, imagine that you have the accessory with you. Every time you would use it throughout the day, make

a mark on a piece of paper. You may be surprised to find that there are absolutely no marks at the end of the day. However, if there are a few marks and you honestly believe that you would be better off with the accessory, then you should start comparing brands and features. Price is an important factor to consider. Personally, it helps me make a choice when I can find the cheapest option for the particular accessory I’m looking at. If you think there is a way that you could get cheaper golf accessories, then you should certainly take advantage of this. You might be able to find the same exact accessory for half as much. If you have golfing buddies who tend to go through accessories at a high turnover rate, you should ask them if they have anything that they would be willing to part with for a fair price. You might luck out and get it for free. Even if you just get it for a discounted rate, it is still better than paying full price. Golf accessories can put a huge hole in your wallet if you re not careful, so it s good to take advantage of these opportunities when they arise. Instead of just going for the most expensive accessory whenever you see something that strikes your interest, you should take a more cool and calculated approach to the purchase. Do everything that I have mentioned so far in order to make sure that you really want and need the item, and then do what you can to get the best deal possible on the golf accessory. You will save plenty of money in the long run for it to be worth the effort.

sunglasses for the greens

S

unglasses are, for most, part of the every day. You wake up, you leave the house and on go the sunglasses. They protect our eyes and keep us from seeing spots when we get caught in the glare of a rear window. But a good pair of shades can be extremely useful when playing golf, too. Here are a few different things to consider when buying a pair of sunglasses, both for on and off the greens. Comfort Comfort is an extremely important factor. If your sunglasses slide down your nose or maybe rest awkwardly against your ears, you can find yourself distracted. Or unable to keep them on your face. When buying a good pair of sunglasses, make sure that you’ve tried them on and that they feel ‘matched’ to your facial structure. It doesn’t do to just let them sit on your face. Move your head around. Look up and down and side to side. If you feel any slippage at all, it could tell you that when you start sweating, you could find your sunglasses being more annoying that useful. Tint and Polarization For golf, you want to be able to measure distances by eye. Dark or ‘smoke’ tint on your sunglasses might not be great. A nice dark amber or brown is probably your best bet. Smoked lenses tend to wash things out a bit and can make everything look like the same color. You may find yourself lifting your glasses up to gauge distances better. A brown lens won’t wash things out nearly as much. No matter the lens color, though, getting

yourself a pair of polarized lenses is important. Polarization reduces glare and cuts the strain on your eyes if you’re looking in the direction of the sun. Weight This might be surprising for many. A pair of sunglasses is always light, right? Wrong. Some pairs have a real weight feel to them. This can cause discomfort around your ears and on the bridge of your nose, especially if there are uncomfortable nose pads on the glasses. The lighter the better. Many high end manufacturers are now producing sunglasses made of plastic that are just as tough as metal and weight half as much. UV Protection Ultra-Violet rays can really cause damage to your peepers. To avoid this find sunglasses that have a decent UV protection number on them. The more you’re outside, the higher your UV protection should be. Don’t skimp on this. UV damage accumulates over time and can cause problems down the road. If you’re playing golf often, do yourself a favor and get something with strong UV protection. Price Pricing is also something you ought to consider when making a purchase. I don’t mind spending $100.00 on a pair of sunglasses. These are things I use daily and they should be worth it. It’s just an extra benefit when I can use it on the golf course or at the driving range. Of course, spending $100.00 on a pair of shades isn’t for everyone. As long as you can find the specifications you need, price doesn’t matter, even if they’re something you find at a convenience store on the way to play.

Your Golf Basic Training Routine

A

proper training program is the most important part of your golf training routine. When training, most folks forget to work on shots close to the green. Extra hours hitting a picturesque drive can be fun, but fixing the kinks in your shots in the sub 100-yard range will cut strokes from you card faster. For a training regiment to be effective, you must keep a regular routine. Golf training time should be shared equally between driving and approaches. An hour pounding drives should at least equal an hour on the putting green. Do not neglect approach shots either, or chip shots and or shots out of the sand. A long, arrow straight drive is a thing of beauty to watch, but an accurate chip shot will save two-puts and win matches. When training, it is best to simulate real world conditions. Sure, you could rake the sand perfectly smooth for each and every practice shot and place ball gently on top, but that will never happen on the course. Toss the ball straight up in the air to simulate the dreaded fried egg flop. Set your practice shots up right against the wall of the sand

trap practice high angle outs, or the smart shot off to the side. Train at rescuing your game from the deep salad. Not making it to the driving range is not a reason to skip training. If you spent an hour at the driving range this morning, then you owe yourself an hour of short game practice. A bucket of balls is the only equipment you need to practice chipping from the unattended edges at the park. Incorporating your putter into your training routine will prove the most important thing you can do. More matches are decided on the green than any other part of the course. Practice the long shots, the short taps and even a few from the fringe while on the putting green. Do not forget that you can practice at home too. You can chip from the garden and weed at the same time! Refrain from mowing the back yard another week and practice some light chip shots. Find a neighbor and take turns hitting practice balls into each other yard to work on blind chip shots. Regular practice is the most important element in your training routine. You will be better off with an hour, three times a day than four hours on a Sunday. Most important, enjoy your time. Golf is no fun if becomes work.

building Confidence in Golf

G

olf confidence is learned in many different ways. Golf is a very visual game in more ways than many of us realize. I was reminded of this fact yesterday when I played with a lady who had left her clubs at home in her rush to get to the course. When she arrived, she borrowed a set of clubs and off we went! Later in the day, she pulled out a 5 wood and proceeded to hit one of the sweetest shots possible, landing on a perfectly flat lie (not easy on this course) leaving an exact 150 yards to the middle of the green. Very nice indeed! As the game progressed it became obvious to us all that this 5 wood was quickly becoming a real favorite. She really bonded with this club. By the time we finished the first nine she disappeared into the pro shop and had ordered a 5 wood and a 3 in this particular make. Now here is a good golfer with a nice positive attitude who knows immediately what she wants! I like her style. I was immediately reminded of the fact that an almost identical thing had happened to me a few months earlier, although sadly I did not take such immediate action. I was playing in the Carolinas and had not taken my clubs and hence borrowed a set, which I immediately bonded with; I have to say that this does not usually happen for me. Upon returning home I just could not hit my own driver and woods as sweetly as I had those other clubs.

I kept looking down at the club as it sat facing the ball and it simply didn’t look good to me; it didn’t look “right”. I knew in my head that it was in my own mind, if you see what I mean. But the fact remains that if your club does not look right to you, your golf confidence doesn’t feel right either! And any golfer knows that confidence is KING. Without confidence that ball zips off cross country as it takes on a mind of its own and visits trees, bunkers, lakes and goodness only knows what else. Those golf balls do what they are told and if you do not apply a firm and focused mind set they will undoubtedly reflect this omission. I am a self confessed golf addict as are the gals I was playing with. A great conversation ensued about the look of a club and how it affected each of us. We progressed to discussing swings and swing thoughts and swing styles. We all agreed that everyone has to find their own perfect swing. There is no perfect swing for all and everyone. Between the three of us, one has a baseball swing with a start and a finish added later, one has a “too-wide” stance and “tooflat” swing plane (me), and the other has what one would probably say is the more accepted norm. But they all work...for the person who uses them. They wouldn’t necessarily work for someone else, but that doesn’t matter; so long as your swing works for you, that’s all that is important. And your swing will work for you when you have golf confidence. In golf, confidence is KING.

getting started with sports

o you’ve been avoiding yourself in the mirror lately, and you S want to get started on some kind of exercise program. The problem is you’re not sure what. You could join a gym membership, and crowd in there like everybody else after work, and trudge away on the treadmill. That would definitely give you the exercise that you need. Recently, however, more and more people are starting to realize that by participating in competitive sports, you get incredible benefits far and above what you would get from joining a gym. If you’d like to get involved in sports but aren’t sure how, then this article is for you.

If you are absolutely clueless on how to start, don’t worry. Everybody starts off that way. One way to begin is to head down to your local library, and head on over to the sporting section. Pick up a few “how to” books on various sports, and thumb through them and see if they seem interesting. If you can imagine yourself playing that particular sport, and find it enjoyable, then it will likely be so when you play for real. Don’t limit yourself to only one, make sure to note all the different sports you think you’ll enjoy. Another idea is to head on down to your local sporting goods store. Just wander around and look at what’s available as far as sports

equipment. Pick up a few and try them out, and see how they feel. This can be a good way to do a ‘gut check’ to see if a particular sport is right for you. An advantage of going to a sporting goods store it that you can ask questions of whatever sport you may be interested in. Another great source of inspiration is your local community college. These always have beginners course in many sports. They are good for many reasons. One is that they are relatively cheap, and meet once a week or so. Another is that you’ll find many other people that are in the same boat as you, and are just starting out. You might even find plenty of people to play your new sport with, giving you all kinds of extra opportunities. Another option you may have is to check with your company. If you work for a fairly large company, there’s a good chance they’ll have sports organizations within the company for team sports like softball, volleyball and others. This can be a great way to get to know your coworkers as well. And if you participate through work, there’s a good chance that it can be subsidized in some way. Naturally, these ideas are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to finding the right sport for you. Once you start exploring your options, you’ll realize you have more choices than you are aware of. And before you know it, you’ll be playing your favorite sport on a regular basis.

a history of golf

I

f there were sticks and objects that could be hurtled along, then there was ‘golf.’ No one knows for certain who started golf. But everybody knows who plays it now - everyone does. The origin of the name ‘golf’ is believed to be the Dutch word of ‘colf,’ which means ‘club.’ In the medieval ages, golf was also known as “spel metten colve,’ which literally meant ‘game with clubs.’ Nearly every area around the world has some claim to the origination of golf. Scotland, of course, has its claim. But so do China, Rome, England, France, Holland, Belgium, even Laos. Every country has a game consisting of sticks and balls, and every country is correct in its assumption that it invented the game. But there is no one country where ‘golf’ actually began. Still, Scotland is widely considered to be birthplace of golf. And it began haphazardly, a way of hitting a pebble or other roundish object into a hole by means of a stick or club. Edinburgh, Scotland, claimed the first golfing society. The Gentlemen Golfers - later known as the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers and today in residence at Muirfield - claim their club was already under way in 1744.

The first inter-Scotland club matches were played in 1857. The world would wait until 1860 for the first British Open to be played. The British Open was being played 35 years before the U.S. Open. It has been called “The World Open.” Players from around the globe participate, as they have for a century or more. The British Open is all-inclusive. The U.S. Open has been moving in that direction for the last decade. But the British Open has been accepting a cast from around the world since the turn of the century. It is not known for certain when golf came to America - only that when it got a toehold in the 20th century, America became the world leader in great players. By 1900, the explosion of the game in America was complete. Proof was that, at the turn of the century, there were more golf clubs in the United States than there were in Britain. Tiger Woods came upon the scene in 1996. He won eight times in 1999, nine times in 2000, and won the four major championships in succession in 20002001, starting with the U.S. Open in 2000. Should his career be as successful in his 30s and 40s as it has been in his 20s, he will assume the mantle of “best player ever.” Women have played a very large part in the history of golf, even before the last half of the 20th century when they finally achieved equality with men. Records of ladies playing golf exist all the way back to the time of Mary Queen of Scots.

Balance & Core Strength for a Better Golf Swing

H

ow far are your shots down the fairway? Do they go as far as you would like them to go?

Being physically fit definitely helps your golf game, but what aspects of your fitness level make the most difference in your golf swing? Having a strong core and better balance will make a huge difference. I work with many golfers. We work for overall body fitness, but leading up to and during golf season we work a lot on core strength and balance. The core of your body includes the Rectus abdominis muscle, the Externus oblique muscles, the Transversus abdominis muscles, and the Erector spinae muscles. There are several other muscles that assist, but are focus will be on these muscles. The Rectus abdominis muscles give you strength going down the front of your core body. The Externus oblique and the Transversus abdominis muscles give you strength on the sides of your core body. The Erector spinae, the back muscles going down along your spine, gives your back strength. By strengthening these muscles, you will not only be able to hit the ball further, you will be able to control your golf swing better. I just can’t guarantee you will hit the ball straighter down the fairway. To strengthen these muscles, you need to do progressive resistance training. That means that you have to keep increasing the resistance as your fitness level improves. You should always check with your doctor before beginning an exercise program. These exercises will target the specific muscles you want to strengthen: • Deadlift – Strengthens your Erector spinae muscles. The stronger your lower back, the further you will hit the ball. • Dumbbell Rotations – This exercise, whether you do it standing or on the floor, is going to strengthen your Externus oblique and the Transversus abdominis muscles. • Crunches – Straight leg crunches, crunches on the balance ball, raised leg crunches, etc. These will strengthen your Rectus abdominis muscle down the front of your body. • Planks – Straight planks strengthen all of the core muscles. Start holding a beginner plank for 15 seconds and work your way up to 2 minutes. Side Planks will help strengthen your core with a focus on your Externus oblique and the Transversus abdominis muscles. The Back Nine of MIDDLESEX COUNTY, MA ♦ advertising to move your business forward ♦ 22

Doing these exercises along with your regular exercise program will help strengthen your core for a stronger golf swing. Balance is the other factor that will help your golf swing. Balance is something that if you don’t use it (or work on it), you lose it. You start to lose your sense of balance at 27 years of age. I work on balance with all my clients, no matter what age they are. I teach a class called Brains and Balance specifically for senior citizens. Balance helps you control your golf swing. My clients have seen great improvement in their swing when they do balance activities the day they play golf. Posture plays a big role in balance. Good posture gives you good balance. To get into good posture, stand tall with your feet hip width apart, lift your shoulders up, roll them back, and bring them back down. This will align your shoulders over your hips and your hips over your feet. Tighten your core to help you balance. Here are some balance activities you can do at home to help improve your balance: • Tandem standing – Stand with one foot directly in front of the other (heel of front foot touching the toe of the back foot). Make sure you have good posture and tighten your core. Stand in this position for 20 seconds, then switch feet and repeat for 20 seconds. • Tandem walking – Using a straight line (a wood plank in your hallway or along the tile line in your kitchen), place one foot in front of the other with the heel of the front foot up against the toe of the back foot. Walk the straight line using tandem walking. • Stand on one foot – Using good posture, cross your hands over your chest, bend one knee, and lift that foot off the ground. You can make it more challenging by closing your eyes; you may want to have a chair handy to hold on to if needed. Count to 20 seconds and repeat on the other foot. These are simple balance exercises you can do at home. If you have everplayed Nintendo Wii Fit, the game judges your fitness age based on how well you do on the balance activities. The better your balance, the better your fitness age. If you want to improve your golf swing, spend some time strengthening your core and increasing your balance, and you will see a big difference in your game. get the most out of your game

re you an aspiring golfer A who doesn’t know where to start, or an intermediate golfer looking to improve your game? This article is written for golfers of all skill levels who want to know what techniques they can try to improve their shots and lower their scores. Read on to find out how.

In order to be good at golf, one of the basic things that you need to take care of is your grip. It is good to know how the ball will act in response to your grip. The tighter you hold the golf club, the more likely it is that the ball will go to the right. The looser the grip, the more likely that the ball will go to the left.

Add power to your swing by using your body, not your arms. Lean in to power your shot. Turn with the ball on the downswing. This lets you use the power of all of the muscles in your body to get a better shot, instead of being limited to just your arm muscles. Another helpful tip is to be sure that you are a positive role model on the course when it comes to sportsmanship. This will say a lot about your character and help to build up the relationship with whoever you are playing with. Never let competitiveness get in the way of friendship.

A helpful tip when it comes to golf is to make sure that you follow through with each shot that requires a full hit. This is helpful because you want to make the most out of your swing and stopping short may cause you to not hit the ball as far as intended.

If you want to get rid of a hook the first thing you should do is check your grip. If your grip is too strong, your right hand is rotated too far over your left hand, you should practice moving your hand to a more neutral position. This will open your club face at contact and should prevent the hook.

Additionally, always be sure to try to find the reason why things go wrong if you have a bad day or bad shot. It is common to blame outside factors for your shortcomings, but you will not become a better golfer unless you can narrow down how to improve.

We hope you enjoyed this article about improving your golfing game. Hopefully, no matter what your skill level, you’ve learned something here that can improve your game and your overall skill as a golfer. Apply these tips in your practice, play to see your scores drop and come out ahead of your opponents.

amate Fitness is about celebrating life, feeling good, moving together and about making movement fun and energizing. Kamate Fitness founder, Nancy Griffiths knows first hand about the benefits, the joys and the science behind exercise. For over 25 years, Griffiths has been motivating clients through personal training and group exercise instruction. “Exercise helps us live life more fully. Doing it should be supportive and even entertaining.” Since 1994 throughout her career in high tech as a software engineer and raising her children, one of Nancy’s passions was fitness instruction. In 2007, Nancy’s mother suffered a debilitating stroke leaving her in wheelchair. Her sister’s health declines from Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis (MS) were accelerating. “Seeing those close to you lose their ability to move tends to have an effect on you. Moving… simply because you can, becomes a gratifying spiritual experience as opposed to a chore to get to an end goal,” says Griffiths. Life for Nancy took on a different perspective; priorities were adjusted. In 2010, Nancy retired from her executive position in PharmaTech to spend more time with family while continuing her beloved exercise instruction. As she focused more on fitness, a new business venture came to light… Kamate Fitness. Throughout her yeas in fitness, Nancy most respected and saw greatest results for her and for her clients from Les Mills programs. Les Mills is a New Zealand based company that sells licenses internationally for highly researched pre-choreographed fitness programs. Normally found only in elite fitness clubs, Nancy intended to share these programs with as many as possible through Kamate Fitness. One of her favorite Les Mills programs, BODYJAM, (fitness dance) inspired her to name her new business Kamate Fitness. “The ‘Ka Mate’ is a New Zealand Māori tribe haka (or dance) celebrating life over death. It’s a series of vigorous movements and facial expressions initiated by one shouting leader. It’s a powerful embodiment of Kamate Fitness.” At 153 Concord Road in Bedford, we offer three Les Mills innovative fitness programs led by supportive instructors in an inspiring community environment: • BODYJAM™ - combines an addictive fusion of the latest dance moves and hip new sounds. No previous dance experience required; choreography is layered and simple. Instructors coach style, direction and attitude to motivate participants to perform at their best while burning fat, improving coordination, and expressing themselves. • BODYFLOW™ - builds flexibility while strengthening and toning muscle groups. A focus on controlled breathing, concentration and a carefully structured series of stretches, moves and poses to music using a blend of Pilates, Tai Chi and Yoga create a holistic workout that brings the body into a state of harmony and balance. • BODYPUMP™ - Our flagship weight training program offers life changing results. challenges the major muscle groups by using weight-room exercises such as squats, presses, lifts and curls. The simplicity of the class makes a great starting point for developing strength and confidence. Uplifting music synchronized with the exercises motivates participants through the workout. Weight training not only improves quality of life in everyday activities but also provides a layer of safety for injuries. And, it improves ANY sport you play. For golfers, it’s a must. Below is an article excerpted from Men’s Fitness Magazine (Feb 18, 2016), citing 5 reasons every golfer should lift weights: Reason #1: Fitness Makes Everything Easier “Walking the course and sitting at your desk is not going to be enough,” Dannenberg says. “Our current society is not set up for as much movement as we should be getting. Everyone should be increasing their movement capacity and strength, because we’re not plowing fields or hunting animals.” Reason #2: “Strength Supports Speed” swinging a club still involves applying force to an external object, and exerting force requires strength—especially over 18 holes. “You need a certain amount of strength to increase the speed in your swing,” Dannenberg says. “If you’re 60 years old, and you don’t have any strength, and then you gain a little strength, then that will improve your ability to smoothly and fluidly swing a club. Strength supports speed.” Reason #3: Weakness Can Ruin a Swing “Swing faults are mostly movement faults,” Dannenberg says. “If you can’t squat or do a lateral lunge, then you probably can’t load weight onto your hips, nor do you have enough trunk stability to do a complicated golf swing. You need to have perfect form on basic motions like a squat and a lunge and a pushup before you can execute a hugely complicated motion like a golf swing.” Reason #4: Strength Fights Fatigue Strength training, especially within a consistent workout regimen that combines compound strength exercises with metabolic conditioning like HIIT, will train your body to resist that fatigue, so your eighteenth drive feels as fluid and natural as your first. Reason #5: Strength Builds Consistency Few things are more frustrating in golf than crushing drives at the start of a round, only to regress to ugly shots by the end. ”In golf, the biggest factor for success is consistency,” Dannenberg says. “By being stronger, you can now repeat those patterns more often. You need to be able to do the same thing you always do, except under more fatigue and more stress.” We invite you to experience the phenomena for yourself… try a class for free! With Kamate Fitness, you’ll find yourself looking forward to exercising - feeling as good during your workout as you do after. You’ll experience strength and vitality as you move through your every day activities such as climbing stairs, doing laundry, or lifting your grandchildren. Everything you do will just feel better. “Our classes will strengthen your body, lift your spirit, build your confidence and TRANSFORM your LIFE.” Griffiths’ sister passed away in 2016 from MS complications. Among the many lessons that tragic experience has taught Nancy is one in particular she now strives to impart on all who will listen, “MOVE… because you CAN.” For more information, see our ad on page 21 of the magazine. the back nine of MIDDLESEX COUNTY, MA ♦ backninepublishing.com ♦ 27

how to maintain golf cart batteries

S

erious, even dangerous threats can eventuate by improperly maintaining your golf cart’s batteries.

A lack of knowledge about basic golf cart battery maintenance can lead to all kinds of problems. Some users assume that the batteries that operate their golf carts are maintenance-free. However, the key to achieving optimum performance and long life is a solid golf cart battery maintenance program. It is recommended that you obtain following equipment for use in golf cart battery care and maintenance: A wrench; distilled water; a voltmeter (an instrument used for measuring the voltage between two points in an electric circuit); a hydrometer (a tool used to measure the specific gravity of the electrolyte solution); a post cleaner; some baking soda; petroleum jelly and possibly the most of all goggles and gloves. Always wear protective clothing, acid proof gloves and goggles when handling lead acid batteries and remove all jewellery. It’s important to have lots of water and baking soda nearby as this will neutralise any acid spills from battery refilling and prevent further corrosive damage. Remember, the electrolyte is a solution of acid and water, so skin contact should be avoided and, do not smoke near batteries and never add acid to a battery. Golf carts are typically powered by six lead-acid batteries mounted beneath the front seat. The Back Nine of MIDDLESEX COUNTY, MA ♦ advertising to move your business forward ♦ 28

First of all, examine the outside appearance of the batteries. You should look for cracks in the container and the top of the battery. Posts and connections should be free of dirt, fluids and corrosion. You should replace any damaged batteries. Check that all vent caps are tight. Then clean the battery top with a cloth or brush and a solution of baking soda and water ensuring that any cleaning solution or any other foreign matter does not get inside the battery. Then rinse with clean water and dry with a clean cloth. Solvents or spray cleaners should not be used. Then clean the battery terminals and the inside of the cable clamps with a post and clamp cleaner. Reconnect the clamps to the terminals and thinly coat them with petroleum jelly. Always keep the area around the batteries clean and dry. Water should only be added after fully charging the battery. Prior to charging, there should be enough water to cover the plates. If the battery has been discharged (partially or fully), the water level should be above the plates. Some important things to remember are: Do not allow plates to be exposed to air and do not fill the water all the way up to the cap. Do not use water with a high mineral content. You should use only distilled or deionised water. Check water levels in each cell of each battery weekly to ensure that the leaded plates in the battery are submerged in liquid. Don’t fill the cell all the way up — add just enough water to cover the plates. Lastly, please follow the manufacturer’s instructions for maintaining batteries. are you swinging your club too hard?

T

he possibility of swinging excessively hard is enough to make even the best golfer stop in their tracks. Most golf enthusiastic are aware that swinging too hard is one of the 3 Golf Commandments never to break. So whenever you may hit an awful drive - the first thing out of the mouth of anyone nearby is: ‘You looked like you were trying to execute that ball!’ And your answer is no doubt: ‘Better believe it, I tried to hit that one a mile.’ Yet, have you ever thought seriously that the fear of swinging too hard could

really prompt more lost golf balls than actually doing it? What does that mean? As most golfers are so stressed over swinging excessively hard and hitting an awful golf shot - the best players on the planet are swinging near 30 mph (48 kph) faster than you. Yet, no one is letting them know that they’re swinging excessively hard - and by the looks of things - they’re hitting some really average golf shots that are interpreting into some really great scores. Would you concur? From the research that I’ve seen, the normal male is swinging his driver at 85 mph (137 kph) and the normal

The Back Nine of MIDDLESEX COUNTY, MA ♦ advertising to move your business forward ♦ 30

female is swinging her driver at 75 mph (121 kph). Yet, Ernie Els, who’s regularly begrudged for how smooth he can swing - swings his Driver at 118 mph (190 kph). While Tiger swings his driver upwards of 125 mph (201 kph). Yet, the apprehension of you swinging excessively hard, despite the fact that you’re swinging around 40 mph slower than the pros - is no doubt making you hit more awful shots than when you do really swing excessively hard. Significance - as a result of this issue, you’re undoubtedly decelerating with your Driver, which could prompt such unpleasant impacts, for example, cutting and loss of separation. Have you ever accomplished both of those? Whenever you’re remaining by the first tee holding up for your tee time - watch the gathering that is teeing off. I expect you’ll see most Golfers decelerating their golf swing to the point that they really have the vast majority of their weight on their back foot at contact with the golf ball. Have you ever wound up with your weight on your back foot? Implying that in light of the fact that you’re making a decent attempt not to swing excessively hard, that you are utilizing your body to ease off your swing by inclining over on your back foot. Again, have you ever gotten yourself on your back foot after a Drive? Deceleration! Trust me; on and around the greens aren’t the main spots you’re decelerating. You’re additionally in all likelihood doing likewise with your Driver. However, deceleration is frequently not reprimanded for the awful tee shot - its regularly mis-diagnosed by the ‘swing specialists’ that you may be playing with as “getting your head, swinging excessively hard, swinging outrageous, twisting your left elbow, not turning your shoulders, etc.” Yes, having the capacity to swing smooth can help you to hit a superior golf shot. However, attempting to swing moderate will really make you hit an awful golf shot. the back nine of MIDDLESEX COUNTY, MA ♦ backninepublishing.com ♦ 31

tips f o r f e m a l e g o l f e r s

I

t’s no secret that quality golf gear can be a bit on the pricey side. But if you’re really committed to learning how to play your best game, then properly fitting golf wholesale equipment is essential. Do you have to spend a fortune on all of the latest, most high tech, brand name clubs and gear? Of course not. But taking the time to see the club fitter at your local course or golf shop and getting the measurements for clubs that fit you best will go a long way towards improving your game from day one. Make the initial investment, and every other golf tip you follow will work out better for it. Unless you’re giving yourself enough room to follow through, your swing won’t be nearly as effective. The secret to a proper stance lies in the width of your feet. You should be setting yourself up wide, with most of your weight on the right side of your body. Tilt your shoulders to the right, as well. As a point of reference, your head should be aligned slightly to the right of the top of the zipper on your pants. Once you’re in position, make sure you’re holding your driver far enough from your body to allow for a powerful swing.

One of the biggest mistakes made by amateur women golfers is to attempt to scoop the ball into the air with the head of the club. In reality, this will cause your swing to slow down after impact. The definition of proper tempo is a buildup of speed. Harnessing that acceleration and learning to control your speed and power is the best way to drive your swing through the impact on the ball, bringing you to a full finish. Like anything else, perfecting your golf game takes effort, commitment, and most of all time. The bottom line is this: if you don’t get out and play, you’ll never get any better. Putting in at least two rounds a month (even if it’s just 9 holes) will go a long way towards getting you where you want to be. Consider joining a women’s league! Being around other enthusiastic beginners might be just the impetus you need to get out and put in the time on your game. Keep in mind that you’re still learning, so don’t stress your score too much to begin with. Instead, focus on developing your game and style, and experiment with different shots and clubs.

Golf Instructions 101

olf is not just about hitting a ball G with the end of a stick. It is much more than that. Though professionals

have always made golf seem like a relatively easy sport, it is in reality one of the hardest sports to play. It is all about hitting the ball correctly with the proper golf club. It is about controlling the swings to control the flight of the ball. Golf is more than what meets the eye. It is for this reason that golf instruction is quite needed for beginners and with this being said, here are a few tips that make up the basic golf instruction: 1. Add more loft at impact to make the ball fly farther To understand this golf instruction, it is important to know what loft is. Loft is actually the degree of the clubface at the set up. When the drives hit off the upper half of the face, the result would be a higher dynamic loft. Hitting the upper half also makes the shot spin less. Following these principles, when a player hits the center or the upper half of the clubface, this would result in a higher degree in initial launch and with less spins. This would then make the ball fly further and higher. It will also land with a stronger forward roll. To be able to hit higher, it is suggested that the player tilt his shoulder during setup. The left shoulder should be lower than the right shoulder. This stance will make the player hit the ball on an increasing angle of attack.

This particular golf instruction would be perfectly executed when repeatedly practiced several times 2. Focus is the best play Golf is not a lazy and distracted man’s sport. This golf instruction number two focuses on the being and concentration of the player. To make sure that all hits would give the desired effect, the person should have his full attention to his drive. Focus does not necessarily mean that a person should make tactics or create game plays. It only means that the player should be engaged in the game, relax when doing the swings, and think of the present. It would help when a golf player would imagine what his swings should result into and not what would happen after every strike. 3. Balance is a personal practice for golf instruction Though there is a standard stance that instructors teach beginners, there is also a certain stance that gives the player the most comfort and best balance. A player should therefore try a number of stances during initial set up and see which of these stance resulted in the best drives. A recommended routine is to try swinging with the legs together first, then swing with only the right foot on the ground. The next few swings would then be done with the left foot on the ground. Finally, when the person has fixed his balance, he should try swinging with his eyes close. This short routine helps a person with his balance.

the Most Common Golfing Equipment

or a person to thoroughly enjoy any sport, it would be best for him Fto have the proper equipment. Golf is

just one of those sports that require a person to know the different kinds of golfing equipment if a person wants to completely understand the game. Basics #1 - Golf Attire All the golf ranges have their own set of golf dress codes. A person cannot just enter a golf range with whatever attire and expect that he would be permitted to play. Though the dress code depends on the golf range, the universal set of golf attire is a clean collared polo shirt and golf pants. A golfer should avoid wearing jeans and cargo pants to the field. Rubber shoes are also not allowed inside, as they tend to ruin the grass. A good pair of golf shoes is highly recommended. Basics #2 – Golf Ball The golf ball is a small ball that is covered with dimples. It is typically white, though there are also golf balls available in bright neon colors, to make it easier for the golfer to locate. This is one piece of equipment that has strict regulations. For example, golf balls are not allowed to be used until they have passed the test of approval by the R&A and the US Golf Association. There are two common types of golf balls: recreational and advanced. Basics #3 - Golf Club This is used to hit the ball. In a regular game, the maximum number of clubs a person is allowed to carry is 14.

It is important to know the different kinds of golf clubs as each type results in different flight distance and degree of loft. The basic kinds of clubs are putters, wedges, irons, woods and the hybrid club. Optional #1 - Golf Tee This equipment is used to elevate the ball from the ground and provide an easier shot for the player. It is a tiny spike, which has a cup at the top where the ball is placed. It is pushed into the ground and can only be used at the start of the round. Optional #2 - Ball Marker This object is used to mark the exact spot the ball landed, just in case the player has to temporarily remove the ball. Though players are not allowed to move their ball, there are still exceptions to the rule. One exception is when the ball lies directly on the putting line of the opponent and needs to be temporarily moved out of the way. Optional #2 - Golf Bag This is an elongated bag mainly for golf clubs storage. It is characterized by a number of pockets at the side for additional golf equipment compartments. There are different bags depending on how it would be carried. There are shoulder bags, two-wheeled cart bags, and bags for golf carts. There are a lot more golf equipment. A player does not need all of it. It would be best for him to identify the optional equipment that he would be actually using to help improve his game.

praCtice makes perfect

ave you been trying to improve H your golf swing but to no avail? Just like what most of the greatest players have said, “A golf swing is like a fingerprint, no two are alike.”

If you have been watching some of the world’s best players and if you have read the biographies or golf instruction books of some of golf’s legendary players and instructors, you will notice each has a style of their own. One of the best players to have ever played the game was Ben Hogan. Having won more than 60 professional tournaments in his career including all of golf’s four major tournaments, you would not believe he had a golf swing problem which is known to golfers as “hooking.” Hooking is when the golf ball tends to veer towards the left side of the fairway. Hogan, who is actually left handed as he has stated in one of his books, played with his right hand and used a strong grip. This was theorized as the reason for his hooking the ball. To solve this problem, Hogan developed a swing which would be known as “The Secret.” Revealed in several magazines some years back and which were based on observations done while Hogan was actually playing, the ball striker’s swing consisted of using a slightly weaker grip, opening the clubface during the takeaway using the wrists and then using his right knee as a trigger to initiate the downswing. This swing is now known the world over as the “Hogan Fade.”

The golfer who instilled the importance of practicing has written two golf instruction books, Power Golf and Five Lessons, the legendary golfer talks about the basic essentials of having a consistent and good golf swing. In the book the golfer also known as “The Hawk” explains the importance of how to hold the club the right way, how to address the ball correctly and how to swing the club from the takeaway to the follow through. You can also now catch his golf instruction online, by typing “Ben Hogan’s Timeless Tips” or “Ben Hogan Swing Keys.” Golfing equipment also play an important role in playing good golf. Over the years a lot of modifications have been developed in terms of golf clubs, putters, golf balls and other golf training aids. Unlike before where golfers could only check their swing if they took a video of themselves hitting the ball, advance technology has made it possible to analyze a golfer’s swing inch by inch. In this way, a golfer’s bad habit could be easily corrected by providing the appropriate golf training aids and golfing equipment. From putting green to golf swing trainers to practice nets for the garage and a whole lot more to choose from, you can be sure your golf game would improve tremendously if you keep using these devices consistently. Take it from Ben Hogan the golfer who has been tagged by his peers as the guy who gave the word “practice” a whole new meaning since he was known to have trained the most among all of them during their time. Practice really does make it perfect!

golf instrUction ONLINE

one are the days when golf clubs used to be sticks and pebbles G were used as golf balls! The first ever

sale of a set of golf clubs is credited to James IV. Formalwear while playing golf also became a trend in the early 1900s, with Walter Hagen, Gene Sarazen and Bobby Jones leading the pack. In regards with their golfing equipment, the wooden clubs were made of hickory wood and were handmade. Iron clubs were heavier then but evolved into steel shafts and later shifted to graphite. Golf balls started out with rubber which flew quite a distance before the dimpled ball was introduced by William Taylor. In this time of digital technology, modifications on golfing equipment could easily be improved. Now clubs could be tested first and players could check out a review on a certain set of clubs before deciding if they would get one. Descriptions of the clubs, how they react and how they rate compared to other clubs could assist a player in making the right choices. Golf training aids are also great tools to use for the busy handicapper. Usually the devices that help improve one’s swing are very portable and easy to carry since they are also meant to be used outside the golf course. This gives a golfer more time to practice even when he is at the comfort of his own home. Video analysis gadgets are very much in the market nowadays too. The latest software for swing analysis that can be used on tablets and portable devices

that can measure the speed of the ball is readily available. Books and DVDs on the game of golf are also part of golf training aids which could help both beginners and low handicappers alike. Swing fixes, experiences of professional golfers, golf games for both junior and adult golfers make up this catalogue of books about golf. A lot of professional golfers endorse golf training aids and golfing equipment, sometimes even wearing the company’s logo while playing a tournament. Some of them have even made a golf instruction video on their field of expertise in the game. Johnny Miller, winner of two major tournaments and 25 PGA Tour events, together with Top 100 teachers Brady Riggs, Brian Mogg, Rick Grayson, Mitchell Spearman and Kellie Stenzell are just a few of the professionals who have done golf instruction online. Using the hips for power, eliminating a slice, how to make a sandy birdie, different types of shots and how to address the ball correctly are just a few examples of the tips you can learn. Updates and the latest golf news could also be found easily, especially if someone is looking for a golf instruction online. Even junior golfers could simply find the most suitable golfing equipment, golf training aids and golf instruction online. Learning a thing or two from these mediums is not a bad thing if it means shaving off a few strokes on the scorecard. Even though golf has evolved over the years, its main concept of hitting a ball with a long stick remained the same.

For the simplest way to keep score, just count the number of strokes you’ve taken on the hole just completed, and write that number down in the box corresponding to that hole on the scorecard. At the end of each nine holes, tally up the strokes for your front nine and back nine totals, respectively, then add up those two numbers for your 18-hole score. the back nine of MIDDLESEX COUNTY, MA ♦ backninepublishing.com ♦ 43
