The history
A NOBLE AND ANCIENT HISTORY Tuscany’s artistic treasures are famed throughout the world; Botticelli’s Venus, Michelangelo’s David not to mention Masaccio’s frescos in the Brancacci chapel. Cities and countryside overflow with architectural delights; Romanesque churches, renaissance villas, Franciscan monasteries and Medicean towns. Vicarello di Volterra was founded in late medieval times, as testified by the chapel of San Pietro, which today is incorporated into the manor house and is mentioned in legal documents dating back to 1298. Among the wealth of documents in the Olivetan monastry of Sant’Andrea di Volterra, there are references to the farms and land which form part of the Vicarello di Volterra estate. At the end of the 14th century, Guelfuccio di Mannuccio dei Manucci of Volterra, an extremely devout and wealthy citizen, and his wife Francesca di Ottaviano Cavalcanti (a descendant of the the Cavalcanti family cited in Dante’s Divine Comedy, canto X in the book of Hell) received a plenary indulgence from Pope Boniface IX in articulo mortis and left their enormous fortune to the Olivetan friars of Saint Andrew. With that same money the monks bought the estate of Vicarello di Volterra, also known as “Buon riposo e

and Francesco, who were in popular demand amongst the Volterran aristocracy.
The friars continued to buy property until 1784, when the monastery was suppressed by Grand Duke Granduca Pietro Leopoldo and the entire estate was bought by the noble Volterran family of the “Incontri”. It was Paolo Cosimo Incontri, the brother of the more famous Giuseppe Gaetano, Bishop of Volterra from 1806 to 1848, who transformed the estate into a residential villa called “Fattoria di Vicarello”.
At the beginning of the 1900s the massive fortune was lost in the risky financial schemes of Raffaella Lorini nei Pedani, the landlady of Vicarello, and sole inheritor of Pericle Incontri, the last of the family line.
The villa’s decorations, the most important of which are in the dining room on the first floor, were painted in the second half of the 19th century by the Gamberucci brothers, Lodovico
The renowned jockey Francesco Cappatelli, better known as “Tabarre”, lived and worked in “Fattoria di Vicarello” until the end of the 1800s. He won an impressive 11 meetings of the famous Palio di Siena horserace. After many years of “rest” the meticulous restoration work will return Vicarello di Volterra its former splendour.

The rebirth of the villa’s antique, aristocratic luxury
Today after careful and painstaking work under the guidance of the Superintendence for fine arts the entire complex is being restored to its former glory. All details have been accurately researched and the finest materials have been chosen by the architects Stefano and Bernardo Tori from Florence. They have brought out the antique delights of Vicarello di Volterra’s aristocratic architecture and combined them with the most demanding needs for modern-day comfort.

The frescos discovered on the walls of the master rooms have been expertly restored by leading Florentine craftsmen. The area around Vicarello di Volterra includes hillocks and hillsides rich in olive groves, vineyards, wheat and sunflower fields linked by scenic roads that run along their crests and lined with rows of cypress trees.
