2016 a great year for Bishop Auckland College 2016 has been a great year for Bishop Auckland College and our students. We are enjoying record success rates for both apprenticeships and classroom based learning and are now officially among the top performing colleges in the country. In national league tables published by the Skills Funding Agency in July 2016 we have been rated: • the fourth best provider in the country for 16-18 apprenticeships, with 84.9% of apprentices achieving their framework on time. The national average is 62.5%. • the sixth best provider in the country for timely achievement rates for classroom based learning, with 88.6% of students passing their qualification, compared to the national average of 82.2%. We have also been praised by external assessors for the quality of our teaching, our student success, excellent links with employers, and the advice and support we provide. An Ofsted inspection report published in May 2016, which found we were a ‘good’ college, said: “The Principal and the leadership team have created a culture of high expectations. As a result, learners enjoy their time at college and recognise how the knowledge and skills they are gaining will help them to be successful in their future lives.” More good news followed in July 2016, when an assessment by Matrix, the national quality standard for

information, advice and guidance (IAG) services, described Student Services as “one of ‘the jewels in the crown’ of Bishop Auckland College”. Other highlights include a Quality Assurance Agency Review of the college’s Higher Education provision in March 2016 which found it met all four standards. Meanwhile Auckland Academy, jointly launched with Auckland Castle in January 2016, is offering a wide range of high quality apprenticeship opportunities - with more than 100 jobs being created by the re-opening of the castle to the public in 2018.

Student support service our jewel in the crown If you are looking for advice, information or guidance, you will be in safe hands with Bishop Auckland College’s Student Services team. For the college’s student support service has been described as one of its ‘jewels in the crown’ in an inspection report. Students and strategic partners praised the quality of advice and support offered in interviews with the assessor for Matrix, the national quality standard for information, advice and guidance (IAG) services. The Student Services team provides careers advice and guidance, financial support, and pastoral and welfare services to the college’s students, as well as helping applicants prior to enrolment. The report said the college placed “considerable importance…on Student Services providing an effective, efficient and timely IAG service to meet the needs of students, employers and partners”. It continued: “In providing the IAG service, staff members in Student

Services do so in an enthusiastic, genuine and committed fashion and are doing all the right things to make the service one that students recognise and appreciate. “The work undertaken by members of staff within Student Services involving a range of individuals with differing needs and capabilities can rightly be considered one of ‘the jewels in the crown’ of Bishop Auckland College.” In order to meet the Matrix accreditation, the college had to meet 27 standards, including having clear leadership and direction, providing accurate, impartial and objective information to clients, and evaluating outcomes for clients. The assessor held focus groups and one-to-one meetings with students and strategic partners to obtain feedback. Student comments included: “Student Services are very considerate and are willing to help” and: “I like the fact you

have someone you can confide in and get a level of support from.” Examples provided by students on support available to them included help with student financial loans and childcare, the use of a scribe for completing written exams and for one student with a broken hand the use of a laptop computer whilst he is unable to write. There were also positive comments from partner representatives, including: “I like working with the college - very professional, very friendly” and: “They are an excellent partner; student focused, very accommodating and flexible.”

Young carpenters swap Bishop Auckland for Biberach A delegation of joinery students and staff from Bishop Auckland College saw the cutting edge of German technology during a two week visit to Biberach.

• Commercial and industrial construction • Public sector construction (eg schools and hospitals)

• Infrastructure projects (eg roads, railways, airports, power stations) • Offshore installations • Self employment

There they learned traditional German carpentry techniques including the double strut trussed roofing frame, using unfamiliar tools to produce a selfsupporting model bridge.

The visitors enjoyed work experience with German timber construction company Schafitel Holzbau and visited saw mill and timber product manufacturers Schneider where they got to see the sheer size and lengths of timbers and sheet materials on offer - something they would not see in the UK. Free time was spent on trips to Ulm, Stuttgart, and Friedrichshafen on the shore of Lake Constance. The visit was arranged by Jason Howe, Curriculum Manager for Construction and Motor Vehicle and North East Northern Region Chairman for the Institute of Carpenters, following several visits to Biberach and a return visit to Bishop Auckland by Markus Weitzmann and Wolfgang Schafitel from the Zimmerermann Ausbildung Zentrum. It was funded via the European Social Fund’s education training programme Erasmus+.

Career opportunities in construction for skilled workers include: • Housebuilding

The 12 students and four lecturers swapped their workshops in south west Durham for the Zimmerermann Ausbildung Zentrum in the south west German town, under the tutelage of Master Carpenter Christian Koch.

They also toured the carpentry museum and found out about the traditional techniques and tools used when restoring timber framed structures.
