HISTORY OF THE COLLEGE
1988
This year Bishop Auckland College will be celebrating its 60th anniversary. In those 60 years, the College has established itself as a first-class provider of further and higher education in County Durham.
The College nursery opens
The forerunner to the College was a Technical Institute, with classes run in the Mechanics Institute in Victoria Avenue and other town centre locations. The Technical Institute was opened in the old Railway Offices, Station Approach, in September 1950, enrolling 250 part-time day and evening students. It was the demand for engineering courses needed by local industry that led to the first buildings for the Bishop Auckland Technical College (now Bishop Auckland College) on Woodhouse Lane, which were formally opened by County Alderman F. Hunt JP in 1958. The College was based there for 50 years until the opening of the new £32m campus at the same location in 2008. Bishop Auckland College Nursery opened its doors in 1988. Rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, 30 years on it continues to provide an important childcare and pre-school service - offering up to 67 full-time places to both external clients and the children of College students and staff. In 1994 the College opened its flagship Community Learning facility Newgate Learning Centre, based in the Newgate Shopping Centre. This continues to provide a range of accredited and non-accredited courses open to adults.
toDAY The College offers a wide range of part-time and full-time courses from Entry Level to Level 6 in vocational areas as varied as construction, engineering, catering & hospitality and criminology. We welcome students aged from 14 to 70+.
The Higher Education Gateway Centre, opened in 2011, continues to grow, allowing opportunities for local access to higher education to provide the higher-level skills to meet labour market needs. Other key developments have included the launch of a strategic partnership in 2014 with South West Durham Training (SWDT), an Ofsted ‘outstanding’ rated engineering and manufacturing specialist training provider located within the Aycliffe Business Park, Newton Aycliffe. The introduction of HNC/HND engineering pathways at SWDT in September 2016 was a key development driven by substantial employer demand. In 2016, Auckland Academy, a joint venture initiative with The Auckland Project, was established to provide apprenticeship and other training opportunities to support the economic regeneration of Bishop Auckland.

“...learners enjoy their time at college and recognise how the knowledge and skills they are gaining will help them to be successful in their future lives. - Ofsted 06
Welcome to Bishop Auckland College! The decision about which college or training provider to progress on to after school can be quite difficult given the range of options on offer. I hope that after reading this prospectus and visiting us to meet staff and other students, and to see our fantastic facilities, you will choose Bishop Auckland College. We offer courses across a wide range of curriculum areas from Entry Level to Higher Education, including Level 3 qualifications that are equivalent to A levels and will prepare you well for university or your first step into your chosen career. But where will you move next after qualifying here? We have mapped the destinations of our recent graduates and, as you can see on page 13, they have gone on to enrol at top universities across the UK – from Paisley in Scotland to Aberystwyth in Wales to University College in London. Bishop Auckland College is a great place to study and we are proud of the unique atmosphere here – we are welcoming, supportive, encouraging and, most of all, ambitious for your success. This is an environment where students, staff and visitors feel safe, respected and valued. We know that positive and productive relationships are the key to success and our staff are absolutely dedicated to really getting to know our students, and providing the right support when needed, in order to unlock the potential within each and every young person or adult learner. At our most recent Ofsted inspection in April 2016, we were rated ‘good’ overall with ‘outstanding features’ in some areas. Every year, our student satisfaction levels are high; in fact, in a 2018 survey, 97% of students said that teaching was good and that they would recommend their course to others. It’s also really important to us that you have a good time whilst you are studying with us, a point that has been highlighted by inspectors. They said: “The Principal and the leadership team have created a culture of high expectations. As a result, learners enjoy their time at college and recognise how the knowledge and skills they are gaining will help them to be successful in their future lives.” We look forward to meeting you at school visits and at our open events in the months ahead, and I hope to see you in September 2019. My very best wishes for your GCSE studies and your future success.
Natalie Davison-Terranova Principal and Chief Executive

QUALIFICATION LEVELS We offer a range of courses at Bishop Auckland College, from Entry level through to Higher Education Foundation Degrees and Higher National Diplomas (HNDs). Our students excel and make timely progress through their qualifications, with opportunities to continue progressing onto higher qualifications available for all subject areas. All our qualifications are vocational in nature. This means more practical learning and hands-on experience, alongside work experience, which is assessed by observations, coursework and assignments. There may still be exam based elements, but they feature much less than when studying for A Levels. Our grade requirements are listed on the opposite page. Students with GCSEs at 4 (C) and above can often begin a Level 3 course immediately, which in most cases can be the equivalent of studying for three A Levels at a sixth form. These courses can carry the UCAS points necessary for university applications while also allowing students to focus on one subject that they love, rather than three or four different A Level options. Each subject area in this prospectus will list an A Level equivalent option if available. Our Level 3 (A Level equivalent courses) are well respected, both by employers and universities. They can potentially carry the same amount of UCAS points as A Levels, allowing you to go to university after you have finished studying with us.

You are aged 24 or over and are studying at Level 3 or above. The funds are prioritised for those who face financial hardship and are subject to eligibility requirements. They can be used to help with: • Essential course items • Childcare costs • Travel costs for students over 19 years old • Course fees.

Following my football dream to the USA Sport student Chloe has been playing football since she was a young girl and played for Sunderland when she was eight and Leeds as a teenager. Chloe now plays her favourite sport for Durham Development Team in the Women’s Premier League (Northern), against teams such as Manchester City, Everton FC and Sunderland. But it was through a conversation with one of her former teammates that the teenager discovered opportunities to play football through scholarship schemes in the United States. Chloe applied and went through a rigorous selection process which included sending off video footage of her playing competitive football in the UK. That led to several universities and colleges in the States taking notice of her football skills and talent and she was offered eight scholarships in total. Chloe chose to study sports science and soccer at Northwest Technical College in Goodland, Kansas, as she thought it offered the best overall package. The two-year community college scholarship will see her play for the college’s ladies soccer team, called the Mavericks, who compete in one of the top leagues. It will also enable her to become qualified in the sports industry and promises the chance of a university degree programme in the United States in the future. Chloe said: “I am delighted to be given this opportunity - it has always been an ambition and a dream of mine to play football in America. The sport is very big over there and it will give me the chance to study and play football to a high standard. I have enjoyed my time at Bishop Auckland College and I am now looking forward to flying to the States to start my scholarship.”

I would recommend the College to anyone interested in a career in nursing; the tutors are very helpful and always there to give advice. Chloe, Extended Diploma Level 3 in Health & Social Care

“I started as a full time student and enjoyed the course immensely, learning a great deal from my tutor about cars and employability skills. I knew I definitely wanted to do this as a career and I went on a work placement at a local garage. I got on well with all the staff and impressed them. They offered me an apprenticeship straight away. I loved the thought of earning a wage whilst I was studying and also the option of still attending college one day a week. I was able to transfer all of my existing work and skills from my full time course over to my apprenticeship. Matthew, Level 2 Apprentice in Motor Vehicle Maintenance & Repair

Lauren is all set to go to York St John University, which was her first choice to study a Degree in Photography. Lauren, who joined the College in 2016, first became interested in photography when in year 9 at school. She said: “Not many colleges offer photography and at sixth form it’s only offered as one A Level which means you don’t get into the subject in a detailed way. At Bishop Auckland College they have brilliant facilities – dark room, photography studio and the tutors are very experienced. More than that though, it convinced me to pursue my dream, and now I’m heading off to the City of York to study a degree in photography.” Lauren, Photography Level 3 Extended Diploma
