Hello
and welcome to your college The College first opened as the Technical Institute in the Old Railway Offices in Bishop Auckland in 1950 before moving to Woodhouse Lane as the Technical College in 1958 where it has been transforming lives ever since. Things have moved on a lot since that period and we have been in a state-of-the-art building with fantastic facilities, still on Woodhouse Lane, since 2007. As the name suggests, the College opened originally as a technical and training facility to provide courses for adults; we have grown from 250 part time adult students in 1950/51 to over 3000 in 2018/19. Adult training for careers, life and leisure continues to be a huge part of what we do. Since 2014 we have also offered a range of engineering and plumbing courses at South West Durham Training (SWDT) in Newton Aycliffe. SWDT is part of the Bishop Auckland College Group. You can study a wide range of subjects from beginners or interest level right up to university level courses, right on your doorstep. There is lots of free parking, easy access and a nursery on site. The primary aim in life of our staff is to do their

very best for you to help you become the very best, most successful version of you that you can be. It’s important to remember that learning is also fun! Please browse through these pages and come and talk to us about what we have to offer. Don’t be put off by the fees as level 3 and university level courses are usually eligible for student loans. If you have watched the Martin Lewis Money Show, you will know that this type of loan does not impact on your credit rating and, in many cases, does not have to be repaid. Further details are included on page 12 or take a look at our website bacoll.ac.uk So, please browse, ponder and make the first step back onto your learning journey. We cannot wait to meet you! Best wishes
Principal and Chief Executive

UNIVERSITY LEVEL COURSES
u o y d i d . . . w o kn ...that we have taught university level courses at Bishop Auckland College for many years? You don’t have to be 18 to study a degree. Our oldest graduate to date is 70; this year the age range is 18 to 55. The variety of courses is broad and our students go on to do amazing things. Some study here on an evening after work and others study full-time. After graduating from the College, our students have gone on to study a final year at universities across the globe. Our graduation
ceremony this year was really special, held at Durham Cathedral in June. We have worked hard to find the best awarding organisations to work with to validate our programmes – this means that you will get a recognised qualification that will also look good framed on your wall! We continue to add new programmes year on year - watch this space...

Funding and Loans One of the biggest factors in deciding whether to return to education is the cost. If you’re under 19 years old full-time courses are free. If you’re 19 years old or over, you’ll find the costs can vary depending on your circumstances and the type of course you are studying.
Am I entitled to any fee remission? Your course is free if you fulfil certain criteria. For example, if you are aged 19 to 23 and you are studying your first level 2 or first level 3 qualification or if you are undertaking an English or maths qualification and you have not already gained a GCSE English and/or Maths qualification (grade C/ 4 or above). Your course may be fully funded and therefore free if you are unemployed and receive certain benefits. For example, this could apply if you receive Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) including those receiving National Insurance Credits only or if you receive Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) and are in the work-related activity group (WRAG). Other benefits may also be eligible and for further details please call or check the College website. Advanced Learner Loans If you are 19 years old and over and a resident in the UK you can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan for Further Education courses at levels 3 and 4. Loans are not means tested or subject to credit checks, and you will only start to make repayments after you have completed your course and if you are earning over £25,000 a year. Higher Education Loans will also be available for levels 5 and 6. If you are a Higher National, Foundation Degree or Degree student at Bishop Auckland College you may qualify for a student loan to cover the full cost of your tuition fees in the same way as degree students at university. If you are studying for a Higher National Diploma (HND) you can also apply for the ‘living costs’ element of your loan. For further information on student finance visit: www.gov.uk/student-finance
For more information about the costs of studying or a FREE fee assessment please refer to the College website bacoll.ac.uk or contact our Student Services team on: 01388 443 000 or email: start@bacoll.ac.uk Page 10

is a little bit special. This isn’t the type of course where you are given a book and left to fend for yourself! We have a team of specialist tutors with vast experience in the subjects they teach, who meet with you either at work, at College or in a community venue to provide support and guide you through the course. APPRENTICESHIPS Apprenticeships are practical, handson programmes designed to provide you with the training needed to progress within your chosen industry. Apprenticeships appeal to those looking for alternatives to full-time study as they take a more practical approach to learning. You’ll focus on training for a specific career and learn your trade by actually doing the job. You’ll gain hands-on experience and have the opportunity to apply your skills immediately.
Employers are free to pay above the apprenticeship wage and many do so, but employers must ensure that they are paying their apprentices at least the minimum apprenticeship wage of £3.90. Most apprenticeships include four days at work and one day training at college. You are paid for all five days. An advanced apprenticeship at level 3 is considered equivalent to A Levels. Level 4 and 5 higher apprenticeships are the equivalent to Higher Education qualifications.
The college offers apprenticeships in all the following industries and specialisms: Bricklaying Business Administration Business Improvement Techniques Carpentry and Joinery Catering Customer Service Practitioner Early Years Engineering @ SWDT Hair Professional Learning Mentor Management Motor Vehicle Technician Painting and Decorating Plumbing Supply Chain Operative Supporting Teaching and Learning in Sports Teaching Assistant
At SWDT we offer engineering apprenticeships in: CAD and Drawing Quality Precision Engineering Fabrication and Welding Maintenance Polymer Processing Technical Support
We offer Higher Level Apprenticeships in: Management Project Management Business Administration
