New poll shows bipartisan support for student loan payment reform UW ranks fifth in U.S. for percentage of college graduates with student debt, state ranks tenth in nation for number of students in debt

A One Wisconsin Institute poll released Sept. 11 found the majority of the Wisconsin public supports state-level financial aid reforms to help people pay off their student loans.

According to the poll results, 64 percent are in support of allowing debtors to refinance their federal student loans and 56 percent support a plan which would deduce student loan payments from one’s state income tax.

This support, the results showed, came from across the political spectrum, with a majority of Democrats supporting both and a plurality of Republicans and political independents supporting at least one of the proposals.

The prompts for the poll questions are references to the Higher Ed, Lower Debt Act, which was reintroduced to the Wisconsin Legislature in February 2017 by Sen. Dave Hansen, D-Green Bay, and Rep. Cory Mason, D-Racine.

The bill has been introduced in three different legislative sessions, but has not passed in the Wisconsin legislature.

Rep. Chris Taylor, D-Madison, expressed her support for the legislation and frustration that it has been unable to pass the legislature.

“Nobody should be prevented from going to college or from thriving after college because of student loan debt,” Taylor said.

The bill’s aim is to ease the financial burden of student loan debt and allow more money to be put into the Wisconsin economy, rather than toward debt payments. This would be done by creating a state authority to help borrowers understand how to pay back their student loans.

According to OWI, it is not currently possible to refinance a federal student loan with the federal government, but it is possible to refinance a federal loan into a private loan.

If the bill were to pass, Wisconsin student loan debt payers would be able to refinance their student loans at a significantly lower interest rate and deduct their student loan payments from state income tax.

In a press release, OWI reported that the University of Wisconsin is ranked fifth highest in the United States for percentage of college graduates with student debt and the state itself is ranked tenth highest in the nation for number of college students with debt.

Annalise Eicher, program director at OWI, said the total student loan debt of Wisconsin residents is more $19 billion and the total student loan debt of Americans is $1.45 trillion.

“The resistance to this bill is misguided and it is ignoring this $19 billion problem in Wisconsin,” Eicher said.

the university acknowledges that debt is a problem for many UW students.

But, McGlone also said education is also one of the “wisest” investments someone can make, and the jobs UW students land after graduation help pay off these loans.

“We acknowledge that college debt is a concern for many students and families, but it’s important to note that more than half of UW undergraduates graduate with no debt,” McGlone said. “For those who do borrow, the amount borrowed has been decreasing and remains below the state and national average.”

McGlone also referenced UW’s efforts to expand the amount of scholarship aid available to students, like their work with the Nicholas Match to raise $100 million for student scholarships.

Outside of Wisconsin, other bills and programs that aim to help students and alumni manage their student loan debt are struggling.

The Federal Perkins Loan Program, the oldest federal student loan program in the country, is available to undergraduate, graduate, and professional students who demonstrate extreme financial need, but only until Sept. 30.

Despite being shut down in the Senate multiple times, the bill was extended for two years in 2015 as a result of legislation drafted

by Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D- Wis., and several of her Senate colleagues.

Through the Federal Perkins Loan Program Extension Act of 2017, Baldwin is now attempting to extend the bill through 2019.

“For generations, the Perkins Loans Programs has helped students build a path to the middle class, not debt,” Baldwin said in a statement. “This is a program worth fighting for. Two years ago, we successfully saved Perkins Loans by working across party lines, and I urge my colleagues in the Senate to join us in this bipartisan effort again.”

The tension between opposing political parties has blocked many federal financial reforms from being made in Congress, but at the state level, the OWI poll results suggest the Perkins Loan Program and the Higher Ed, Lower Debt bill are both supported by Wisconsinites across the political spectrum.

“It is common sense to be able to refinance your student loan,” Eicher said. “There is strong support for refinancing from Democrats, independents and Republicans.”

UW professor brings renewable energy floor to Union South In the future, lead researcher Xudong Wang hopes the renewable energy flooring will be implemented throughout UW campus

Many students have noticed the new floor installation inside Union South, but not many realize it is a part of a renewable energy project.

A team, led by University of Wisconsin professor of materials and science engineering, Xudong Wang, have created a floor prototype that converts the energy of footsteps into electricity.

The floor looks like typical wood, but the wood is chemically treated to produce an electrostatic charge, Wang said. The charge is created when a footstep comes into contact with an electrode embedded in a prototype.

The wood pulp is inexpensive and is often a product of waste from other industries, Wang said. There are other similar prototypes that exist, but they are more expensive and don’t use recyclable materials.

Wang started his research for this project three years ago. In the future, he hopes this flooring will be placed throughout the UW campus.

“We started with a very small tiny piece, we

would test it in our lab, then we moved to the wood fiber, then we moved to a larger scale floor setup,” Wang said.

This is the first time Wang’s lab is bringing their research into a real life application site.

From here, the team will see how long the system lasts and withstands a normal operation environment.

A variety of factors, such as humidity and temperature, will be monitored to test the durability of this first prototype, Wang said.

“Right now, I think it produces about a few million joules per step,” Wang said.

This type of technology is called environmental mechanical energy harvesting, Wang said. The goal is to use energy that is already being created, in this case footsteps, to transfer that energy to sustain electrical mechanisms.

Though the floor prototype is an important part of Wang’s research, it is not the only focus.

“The floor is one specific application for our efforts of environmental mechanical engineering harvesting,” Wang said. “We do have other types of developments to harvest

energy from other types of energy sources.”

Though Wang is unsure of the exact results of how much energy the floor can produce, he

is looking forward to seeing the results after a semester of use.

The location, Union South, was chosen specifically because, it has the highest traffic area on campus, according to Wang’s previous research. This was seen as a satisfactory location

because it would really show not only how much energy could possibly be produced but how well the floor prototype will hold up with heavy use. “[Union South] is the most extreme environment for a floor,” Wang said.

UW researchers and students are also working on a variety of other projects in the field of renewable energy, Mark Griffin, Wisconsin Energy Institute spokesperson, said.

The floor prototype in Union South is just a highlight of the other sustainability projects currently being pursued on campus. The university is pursuing Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certifications on campus buildings.

To have an LEED certification, the building must gain a certain number of points based on how “green” the building is, like how efficiently it’s using energy, according to LEED’s website.

The campus currently has one LEED platinum certification, six gold and four silver. UW will continue working to obtain more through projects such as Union South’s renewable energy floor.

Nursing school launches accelerated program to meet nurse shortage New undergraduate program designed for any interested students who have already earned degree in another field

In an effort to meet changing healthcare demands and a shrinking nursing workforce throughout the state, the University of Wisconsin School of Nursing has developed an accelerated baccalaureate nursing program.

The program, which is designed for students who have already earned a degree in another field, will enroll 32 full-time students who will begin coursework in May 2018.

Upon graduation, students will receive their bachelor of science in nursing and be fully prepared to become licensed nurses.

Students are chosen based on past academic success, previous healthcare-related experiences and readiness for what will be a very intense, rigorous and time-intensive 12-month program of study, Karen Mittelstadt, assistant dean for academic affairs at UW nursing school, said.

“Like our traditional BSN program, the accelerated BSN will be competitive and selective,” Mittelstadt said. “I’m anticipating around 120 applicants for the 32 seats in our initial class.”

The nursing faculty has been working on the program for two years now as a response to the lack of registered nurses in Wisconsin, Mittelstadt said.

In a 2013 report, the Wisconsin Center

for Nursing predicted a shortage of 20,000 registered nurses in the state by 2035.

As a result, there’s an increase demand for registered nurses, program director, Wendy Crary, BSN accelerated program coordinator, said.

“The UW School of Nursing has included in their strategic plan the goal of educating more nurses, and identified an accelerated second degree program as a logical step toward meeting that goal,” Crary said.

Though the program will begin next year, some UW students are already thinking of applying to it, including UW junior Joanna Martinez.

Martinez said she had recently switched from a pre-nursing undergraduate track to majoring in human development and family studies because she realized her own interests did not entirely align with nursing.

But, she still loved nursing and came from a long familial line of nurses, so when she heard about the program, she wanted to give it a try.

“I realized that I don’t have to go through nursing in order to help people,” Martinez said.

“Because of the accelerated nursing program, I realize that I can now get two degrees in subjects that I’m passionate about.”

As the Oct. 1 application deadline

approaches, Crary and Mittelstadt expressed hope for the program to develop leaders for the profession, as well as more highly qualified and prepared nurses.

Mittelstadt said the accelerated BSN is a good example of how the UW School of Nursing is working to meet the demands of students on campus and the needs of the state at-large.

Should she be accepted, Martinez said she hopes she can enhance her other degree through the accelerated BSN program and advocated for similar programs to be pursued in other academic departments.

“I think having it for other majors is helpful, especially because graduating with a degree in four years is sometimes very strict,” Martinez said.

“This opportunity would allow for more people

to have a more holistic approach to education, where you can get experiences in all factors that you’re interested in.”

UW veterinary lab teams up Experts look toward solutions with local shelter to help dogs for Wisconsin’s worker shortage Recent outbreak in illness led some canines to feel ‘crummy’

Earlier this month, dogs at the Dane County Humane Society were diagnosed with a contagious illness, which prompted University of Wisconsin Shelter Medicine Program and Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory to work together to help the dogs.

DCHS workers noticed when symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge and lethargy began to spread throughout the shelter.

Though a few dogs experienced more severe symptoms, the majority of dogs showed mild signs of illness.

Among the dogs, influenza was ruled out, although not without a bit of initial concern among UW Shelter Medicine Program staff. The symptoms of influenza and parainfluenza — a respiratory virus common among shelter dogs — are similar on a basal level so they are easily mistaken for one another.

DCHS public relations coordinator, Marissa DeGroot, noted the dogs tested positive for parainfluenza and mycoplasma, a bacterium linked to kennel cough. Both are less serious than influenza and easier to treat.

“Cases of kennel cough are fairly common in shelter environments,” DeGroot said.

Mycoplasma and parainfluenza, the causative organisms, likely traveled through the shared air, water and food of the dogs, DeGroot said. Similar to how the common cold is passed between humans, once the organism is inhaled by a dog, it will infect the cells inside the throat and cause the respiratory disease.

Keith Poulsen, the diagnostic case and outreach coordinator at the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, dedicates himself to helping animals in the Dane County area.

“Similar to how humans are tested for a common virus, we usually do a nasal or tonsil swab of the infected dogs and then run our tests,” Poulsen said.

“It’s a quick turn around, we usually know the results within a few hours.”

Supportive fluids and time were crucial to treatment to help the dogs, Poulsen said.

Poulsen put a lot of time into watching

the progress and recovery of the animals.

“The dogs felt crummy for a few days, and because this virus was highly contagious there was some concern about infecting young and elderly dogs who are more susceptible to infection,” Poulsen said “But with supportive fluids the dogs began feeling better within a few days time.”

The shelter took a number of precautionary measures to stop the spread of the infectious disease to both healthy dogs and other animal species living at the shelter.

“Not only did we close the shelter and stop dog adoptions immediately, we also contacted all recent dog adopters and informed them of the symptoms they should look out for in their new pet,” DeGroot said.

Cautious actions have been put in place to minimize exposure to other animals by separating sick, exposed and newly arrived dogs into these three separate areas at the humane society, DeGroot said.

No other animals at DCHS or in the community have shown signs of the infection, Poulsen said. DCHS does not expect any more cases to arise because the situation was handled right away and many precautionary actions have been put into action.

The shelter did not see the illness as an overly concerning matter and treated it as they would any common virus, DeGroot said.

Now that the illnesses with the DCHS dogs is no longer of concern, DCHS along with UW Shelter Medicine Program and WVDL have moved on from the situation.

As Wisconsin faces record-low unemployment rates and a large portion of the Baby Boomer generation retiring, experts are speculating possible causes and solutions to the state’s worker shortage.

A potential reason for the shortage is that workforce is transitioning to an economy that is increasingly dependent on machinery.

Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation COO Tricia Braun said companies are realizing they need to make technological advancements.

“In order to be competitive in this global economy, [companies] are going to have to make some advancements in technology,” Braun said.

University of Wisconsin Foundation president and CEO Michael Knetter recognizes the transition from one type of economy to another can be “difficult.”

But, with increasingly complex machines replacing labor traditionally done by workers without college degrees, the workforce will have to adapt to meet the needs of currently unfilled jobs, Braun said.

Wisconsin college graduates choosing to leave the state after graduation may also be contributing to the worker shortage.

Knetter called Wisconsin a “net exporter” of college graduates, meaning more students who graduate from college in Wisconsin leave the state than those who stay and take jobs.

“Historically, Wisconsin is a state that has had a disproportionately high share of jobs in manufacturing and agriculture relative to other states and those tend to be sectors that don’t require as many college graduates,” Knetter said.

But Knetter said a worker shortage might be a sign of a strong economy, both in Wisconsin and nationwide.

“A worker shortage sounds bad, but lets face it, the flip side of that would be high rates of unemployment,” Knetter said. “At the moment, many of the Midwestern states have very low rates of unemployment and that’s because, nationally, we’re in the very late stages of economic expansion.”

The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation has several initiatives in place to attract more workers to Wisconsin.

In 2016, the corporation published the Wisconsin Perception Research report. The study was conducted using members of the Millennial generation, Generation X and Baby Boomers from Wisconsin, surrounding Midwest

states and the rest of the nation.

Braun said the study was successful in showcasing Wisconsin in a different way and highlighted areas where improvement is needed and where improvements have been made.

The results from the research report indicate Wisconsin has a “good” business climate that would be inviting for businesses hoping to expand their operations.

choosing southeastern Wisconsin as the location for a new manufacturing campus is an event Braun believes will bring other talent to Wisconsin as well.

“A company and a project with the size and magnitude of Foxconn and their facility in southeastern Wisconsin will help bring attention to the types of higher opportunities that Wisconsin offers,” Braun said. “In addition to their recruitment and training plan, it will help to draw more workers into the state through its supply chain and insides operations that will come with it.”

WEDC has funded programs for Wisconsin’s youth to help them develop skills that will make them competitive in the workforce, including more than $500,000 in grants to build fabrication laboratories in 21 school districts across Wisconsin.

This programming will help develop the workforce and pull Wisconsin ahead of other states who are facing similar workforce challenges, Braun said.

“All of the midwestern states are collectively dealing with a talent shortage issue, having to complete for it. In terms of what we are doing to make sure that Wisconsin is on that, we are leading that charge,” Braun said.

Proposed legislation looks to reduce suicides committed with firearms State representitive Melissa Sargent expressed urgencyin addressing Wisconsin’s suicide rate, has personal tie to bill

As part of Suicide Awareness Month, Rep. Melissa Sargent, D-Madison, introduced legislation aimed at reducing the number of suicides committed with firearms in Wisconsin.

The proposed bill would allow individuals who might be at risk of suicide to voluntarily prohibit themselves from purchasing handguns for one, five or 20 years.

The legislation would allow individuals with a history of mental illness to register themselves on a firearms exclusion list while they are not in a mental health crisis. Should a crisis emerge, they will be unable to obtain a firearm and have taken proactive steps to protect themselves.

“It is super important we let people know this does not mandate people to give up their firearms — it’s completely voluntary,” Sargent said. “It does allow people to protect themselves, and it does help remove the stigma associated with suicide.”

The deadliest attempts at suicide are those that involve firearms, with 85 percent of suicide attempts with guns being fatal, Sargent said.

Suicides take up a large majority of gun-related deaths in Wisconsin, Shel Gross, public policy director at Mental Health America in Wisconsin, said.

In Wisconsin alone, firearms account for more than 45 percent of suicide deaths.

According to Sargent, data suggests when guns are removed from suicidal individuals, it reduces the chances they will successfully commit or even attempt suicide.

In the same vein, Gross said reducing access to firearms makes a real difference in an individual’s probability of committing suicide.

“One of the most effective ways to reduce suicides is to separate people from firearms,” Gross said.

Gross, however, raised several potential problems with the bill.

People at risk of suicide may still be able to purchase handguns from dealers who aren’t required to perform background checks before selling guns, Gross said.

Also, individuals who may be suicidal at a certain time in their lives may have gun-related hobbies which they wouldn’t be able to participate in during the length of time they excluded themselves from purchasing firearms, Gross said.

Despite the concerns, both Mental Health America and Journey Mental Health Center support the legislation.

The bill is modeled after moderately successful programs in other states that allowed people to voluntarily exclude themselves from gambling institutions if they felt they were addicted to gambling, Sargent said.

Sargent also expressed a sense of urgency in addressing the problem of suicide in Wisconsin. “[It is] past time to do everything we can in order to remove the stigma associated with suicide,” Sargent said. “When we talk about suicide as a reality in our community and empower people who have experience in that realm, we are taking steps to remove that stigma.”

Sen. LaTonya Johnson, D-Milwaukee, began circulating the proposal for co-sponsorship two weeks ago. But so far only Democrats, a minority in both chambers of the state legislature, 8 • badgerherald.com •September 26, 2017

have signed on.

Sargent acknowledged the difficulty of bipartisanship in the current political climate, but called the measure “common sense.”

“I’m hopeful that people will be able to put partisan affiliations aside to help the people of Wisconsin to reduce suicide,” Sargent said.

Sargent expressed the proposal’s significance to herself and

the individuals and communities in Wisconsin that have dealt with suicide.

This bill, she said, is one she’s very “passionate” about.

“I have been impacted by people that have committed suicide ... it’s important that we as policymakers stand up when things aren’t working in our community and work to make things more safe,” Sargent said.

Filmmakers seek to challenge stereotypes, foster compassion through movie ‘Walk a Mile in Their Shoes’ creators, duo behind Justice Media explore new perspectives to broaden audiences’ worldview

“Walk a Mile in Their Shoes” is a documentary that follows five individuals facing different types of social oppression and provides a platform for them to tell their stories.

Johnny and Marie Justice, the duo behind Justice Media and the curators of the documentary, explain that Justice Media focuses on the understanding of others’ lives — hence, the name of the documentary. Justice Media is actively involved in the Madison community, and hope the documentary will spark a dialogue about bias and possible actions to take.

When asked about the mission of Justice Media, Johnny and Marie Justice said that they are focused on exposing people to other individuals’ true stories and experiences, as this allows a more in-depth comprehension of complex situations like the ones depicted in the film, and fosters empathy.

“We think it’s just important to tell stories and humanize people,” Johnny said.

“All too often, we use words like ‘politics’ and we don’t get the human element of things. Our mission and our purpose is to make sure that we make real stories with real people.”

The film also allows people to give an account of their authentic stories. People everywhere are making important impacts in the world, and the couple aims to tell these important stories to the public.

To produce the documentary, Justice Media collaborated with Intentionally Welcoming Communities, a group that aims to be inclusive and understanding, as their name suggests. After getting involved with the Madison community and a chance meeting with the organization, Justice Media was inspired by Intentionally Welcoming Communities’ efforts.

Marie and Johnny Justice contemplated the question of ‘what does it mean to intentionally welcome someone?’ This question prompted them forward with the documentary.

Marie Justice explained that putting a face to specific stories is helpful in helping others understand it. Johnny added that there’s always two sides of things: Opinion and true perspective. While opinions are unsubstantiated claims, true perspective is facts that can challenge opinions and stereotypes.

Johnny and Marie believe while the types of challenges each person in the film faced are unique, the nature of oppression means there are shared challenges that enable people to understand one another. However, they emphasized the hopes and goals that people have are universal and even more evident than the challenges.

“At the end of the day, people have basic needs that they deserve,” Marie said.

“They deserve happiness, love, acceptance – and that was very common, not just the oppression. They were human beings; we all want love, acceptance and to belong.”

Justice Media is interested in understanding others’ views, and helping the community do the same. They hope that upon viewing the film, people will broaden their worldview and develop greater compassion.

With the documentary, they hope people

will take action to dissolve social barriers.

“It gets people thinking, ‘How can I get involved?’” Marie said. “Everybody is working together and putting in their effort or putting in their time.”

As opposed to wasting time watching TV, people can be active and help to end homelessness, if that problem is important to you, Johnny said. Or, people can help the transgender community, end mass incarceration or help undocumented immigrants, he said. There is always actions to be taken that can benefit the community.

So far, the film has worked well to create a discussion about the issues of stereotypes and struggle, which is one of the first steps to minimizing them. The Justices educate the community on these stereotypes at a class they teach at Edgewood College. They show the film to students, and afterward have a discussion.

“The conversation dialogue afterward surrounding the film is about how much

it got them thinking — how it changed perspectives and emotions,” Marie said.

“On [Sept. 27] when we show it at the Barrymore, it’s free and open to the public.

We want people to be there.”

Justice Media believes in order for our society to start to fix issues and eliminate stereotypes, people need to identify the stereotypes that they have toward other people.

By noticing and questioning these beliefs, and then interacting with individuals from the groups one is stereotyping, the reality of the situation will emerge.

“If you went to the doctor and were diagnosed with cancer, that wouldn’t be the end-all, be-all,” Johnny said. “You would go to a different doctor; same thing with the infection of bias: you have to question it. Confront that bias and the stereotypes, and seek information from individuals and learn from them. Immerse yourself, somehow someway, into the culture or group you’re stereotyping.”

Sean Patton set to bring big laughs, offer an escape from everyday worries Comedian sets out to expose his flaws on stage, so audiences can laugh with him, learn to accept their own insecurities

Every so often, it all seems as if everyone could use a little break from reality. The bottom line is that the news can become very depressing after a while and we could all use a laugh.

A very charismatic and and humble comic, Sean Patton, is hoping to bring that emotional release to the audience of Madison’s Comedy Club from Sep. 28-30. He can be recognized from his appearances on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, Conan and his work in conjunction with Comedy Central and TruTv on a multitude of projects.

Patton’s up and coming tour, “Number One,” is going to be one where he unapologetically exposes his true self.

“This tour will actually be some of the most personal stuff I’ve ever done on stage,” Patton said. “Truthfully, I try to stay away from very current event topics.

I don’t talk about Trump. I don’t like Trump and I don’t like his administration, but there’s a lot of talk about that right now. They’ve got that covered. I try to offer the escape from that.”

Although the jobs of comedians may go under appreciated by many, they are essential, Patton said.

Everybody could use a good laugh once in a while, he said. They also allow people to think about reality critically in an environment that’s positive and accepting.

“I take the audience on a journey. I hope that through my experiences they can relate and feel comfortable with their own experiences,” Patton said. “The one thing every human being on this planet has in common is that we are all flawed. So when I get on stage, I expose my flaws so people can laugh at my flaws and then feel comfortable with theirs.”

Sean’s passion for comedy goes way back to when he was in high school and remembers watching great standup from comedians such as Richard Pryor and Dave Chappelle. He also raves about Sarah Silverman and Patton Oswalt. After being inspired by these stand-up comics, he wanted to make people laugh — and that’s exactly what he’s accomplished.

Considering that Patton has been working hard and preparing for his solo tour, he hasn’t been working with other comedians too much recently. Yet, he reflects on the work he has done with the “very cool” Amy Schumer and truTv. “There’s a show on truTv now called ‘Those Who Can’t.’ I do watch that show. I don’t know why that show isn’t bigger — everyone should be watching that show,”

I was in one episode, but my one episode is nothing compared to the dozens of other great episodes.”

When Patton is looking for other comics to work with, he seeks out other people who have a similar mind set about performance comedy as he does. Patton explained that good comedy makes people laugh, but also makes people see and accept the joke for what it is. Patton collaborates with others who also realize this. Together, they can create jokes that could have been insulting, but the offensiveness is overshadowed by the comedy.

As a practiced performer, Patton has excelled at creating an environment with the audience in which they can connect with his stories on a more personal level.

He explained that there is a difference between writing and delivery. It’s not only the content the comic brings, but how they showcase it.

Through years of experience, Patton has gotten his writing and delivery formula down to a science that works best for him and his audience. His show at the Comedy Club should be special, since the club means a lot to Patton.

“It’s my favorite club,” Patton said. “There’s just so much that they do right ... beautiful club, wonderful scene, it’s right there deadsmack in the middle of everything.”

Since it will be his seventh time performing in Madison, he has come up with his own tradition of purchasing a new item at Jazzman — a high-end male clothing store on State Street — every time he returns.

He might have to add personal stylist to his list of skills.

This Friday, Tangible Space, a performance at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art will showcase a collaboration between two artists: Photographer Sonja Thomsen and choreographer Maria Gillespie. Together they are linking movements between dance, light and time in an immersive experience that refuses to be static. The Badger Herald spoke with Thomsen about the performance and her work as an artist.

Badger Herald: Have you been closely collaborating with Maria Gillespie, or has this been more of a solo response, on her behalf, of your work?

Sonja Thomsen: It’s our first time working together. She did a performance at a space that I ran in Milwaukee and she was the first person I thought of when we were brainstorming programming. It’s been really important for me for this installation to have programming that engages multiple ways of knowing.

I had a conversation with a physicist, and I think there’s going to be a discussion with psychologist from UWM along with Maria performing and dance, and I’m really interested in the way that you can know something intellectually and know something of the body and the relationship between a felt experience or a physical manifestation of experience, or a kind of cognitive, intellectual understanding experience.

I invited Maria to the space knowing her work was dealing with these platforms — localizing movement on small stages — and I immediately thought it’d be interesting to see these stages in the space and how she would respond. It’s hopeful she would respond to the idea of improv and being a part of her process. When she came to the space, we talked about my ideas in the installation, and there’s this interest in manifesting body knowledge through movement and space. She was super excited and got it right away when we walked through the space.

I talked about materiality of what’s in the space and seeing the images, but also experiencing the thing itself in the space and the way the light is reflecting and refracting in the space and how form is changing as you move in relationship to it. We immediately dove into thinking what the dances would be and how the dancers could reflect and refract each other’s movements throughout the multiple levels of the space and for people to move and not watch the performance in

a static way. We hope for viewers to move through the space as the dancers are performing.

This is Maria’s choreography and her vision of an interpretation of my work in terms of what the movement is doing. The musician is someone she’s worked with and I’m really interested and excited because I’ve always loved cello. Maria gave him a zine that I made for the show and he’s been interpreting that zine page by page to create the sound. They’ve been planning their movement around the sound that he creates. The visual is leading the audio and then the movement. I’m really excited to see what comes of it.

BH: As an artist you manipulate light and vision throughout your work. What is it about this practice that appeals to you so much?

ST: That’s a harder question I think. To be concise about it, I think it’s something I’m always chasing. I’m really interested in discovery and I’ve been researching a lot of light and space artists along with that movement and making the act of perception and seeing the experience of the art and how to do that. As a photographer, you’re trained to control light and time. Those are elements, in which controlling those elements, you make pictures and then construct this static, two-dimensional illusion of a three-dimensional space. I’ve realized I’m starting to work backward from that, where I’m moving between threedimensional and two-dimensional space and then interested in how light itself becomes the material.

It’s exciting because it’s dynamic and it’s always changing. There’s a lot of improv and spontaneity that happens on site.

I think there’s a relationship between my interest in movement and love and passion for photography. I also am captivated with the idea of being able to respond to it instead of something being static. Light marks time and I’m interested, in my installation, that it’s a time based experience for people. Your movement through the piece is how the whole piece comes together.

The most interesting conversations I’ve had with people is when they move up into the space and back down through the stairs and after moving and taking that entire journey, the way that time and their movement through the space, is that it creates and produces the whole experience. I’m using light and time as something

Photo Courtesy of Leah Kolb to get people to linger. Light is something that we all have a connection to — an intimate relationship with the idea of the sun and the feeling of the sun, and I like that.

BH: Back to the physical element of the performance — how does it feel to have a dance element knowing that you used to be a dancer yourself?

ST: It’s so exciting. I’m so pleased that I’ve had an opportunity to explore many disciplines and have this cross discipline discussion within the space that I’ve created. I was a double major with science and studio art in undergrad, so the fact I got to have a discussion with this amazing physicist was really exciting, and the entire time I’ve been dancing (since I was six years old until I graduated from undergrad), I’ve always been interested in movement. My students always tell my that I dance when I teach.

I’m so, so excited and I hope this is the beginning of collaborations with dancers and

thinking about movement. I’m really excited about what I’ll learn from the performance. It’s scheduled for 7 p.m., so it’s that transitional time of day. As the performance is happening we’ll experience darkness in a way — lighting will sculpt the space, especially thinking about how the performance itself will change from September to the second one in October. I’m excited what the dancers will learn from the space. It’s a big experiment, but it’s really exciting.

BH: Do you have anything else in the works or plans for more projects?

ST: I’m having a videographer film the performances, and I also want to document it and think about how I can link images of the dances and the space and how that could generate a new project or idea. But, I also want to experience it and when I’m making pictures I don’t experience the whole thing. Im currently working on a project about Mary Knowle for the John Michael Kohler Art Center.

NAMI Wisconsin’s Annual Healing Art Show aims to educate on mental illness NAMI Wisconsin’s communications and events director Jamie Gurgul discusses 11 years of the Mental Health Awareness Week tradition

The National Alliance on Mental Illness will host their annual healing art show opening reception at Lakeside St. Coffeehouse Saturday.

The event takes place in honor of Mental Illness Awareness week, which takes place during the first full week of October.

NAMI Wisconsin serves the community as one of the largest grassroots mental health organizations in the area, and seeks to both advocate for individuals with mental illnesses and educate about mental health and recovery. The organization supports 31 local affiliates across the state working against the stigma of mental illness.

This year’s Healing Art Show has been organized by Jamie Gurgul, NAMI Wisconsin’s communications and events director.

“The show was originally created to break down stigma that is often associated with mental illness in the community,” Gurgul said. “We wanted to showcase our artists strengths and abilities rather than limiting their talents by their mental health conditions.”

Fifty artists are featured in the show, which is more artists than ever before in the event’s history. NAMI Wisconsin created the show 11 years ago as a platform to create space for artists with mental illnesses, and has since expanded due to necessity.

The artists come from all around the state of Wisconsin, rather than being limited to just the Madison area. This allows the audience to experience a wider range of viewpoints on the subject of mental illness from all over the state.

Art can be used to explain mental health in a way that other mediums cannot. The individuality of each artist’s mental health condition is portrayed through their various artistic styles and works, according to Gurgul.

“For all of our artists, art is really just a wonderful way to understand emotions, perceptions and behaviors,” Gurgul said.

The exhibition will display multifaceted aspects of art such as painting, drawing, sculpting, writing, music and more — showing the range of talents of the artists involved.

The Healing Art Show will be the first time a lot of these artists are able to display their work publicly, Gurgul said. Through this, NAMI Wisconsin provides an avenue for emerging or practicing artists to display their works. There are many benefits to participating in art, especially for those with mental health conditions, Gurgul said. Some of these benefits include stress relief, self-empowerment and motivation — though the list goes on and on.

“It’s a great time to provide self care for oneself and be able to communicate the thoughts going through their mind,” Gurgul said.

This exhibition serves as a prime educational tool that everyone can learn something from. The exhibit reveals just how important the issue of mental health is, and seeks to challenge the ways we address and confront it.

Gurgul believes art is a great place to start. Through holding an event that both gives individuals with mental illnesses a voice, while also educating the public at large about the manifestations and realities of mental illness, the Healing Art Show serves as an integral community event.

The opening reception will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. Sep. 30, and will give attendees a chance to meet some of the artists involved. For those who cannot make the reception, there’s no need to worry — the exhibition will be open from Sep. 29 to Nov. 10. at the Lakeside St. Coffee House.

“Everyone deserves access to a quality life of happiness and opportunity to work and find their purpose,” Gurgul said.

Student poem ‘Game of Life’ shows how mankind is at mercy of the universe, the preciousness of life lost in an instant

Welcome to StoriesEtc, a place where University of Wisconsin students can share their original works of creative writing with the community, whether it be poetry, short stories or anything in between. As a section dealing with the arts, it feels only natural to create an opportunity for students to share their creative talents.

With that being said, let’s meet this week’s contributor, UW student Rodrigo Smith.

The Badger Herald: Tell us about yourself. What’s your major? Year in school?

Rodrigo Smith: I am from the south side of Chicago, Illinois, born and raised, oldest of three, two little sisters. I am actually majoring in mathematics, not creative writing or anything of that nature. I have taken a creative writing class since I’ve been at Madison, though. I enjoy many things — I play piano, draw, I enjoy art immensely and it takes many different shapes and forms. I also enjoy creation and the passion it brings. When you are able to learn and create things there is a strong interplay that is immensely satisfying.

Define your writing, authorship and perspective.

I try to tend to think my authorship and perspective is the same as my artistic perspective, which is to paint pictures. When I write, I want to portray an image or idea to my audience and readers. I attempt to use my words, tone, empty space, imagery, to convey that idea. When I’ve gotten the point across holistically, I then tend to engage with my writing in more detail, similes, metaphors, things of that nature. I mean it’s typically what any poet or artist does.

However, I tend to be more engaged with having more variety into how to perform a piece. I have performed pieces in many different ways to create a new mood for my idea. That’s the cooler thing about poetry — performance and tone can shift the overall feel of your portrait, and by

portrait, I mean whatever you’re trying to convey. This is also the very reason I study mathematics, it increases perspective, creativity and it has beauty. Math is viewed by many as an art form and even that in itself is a strong perspective.

When did you start writing creatively?

Not many people know this about me because I’m typical the math and science dude, but I have been writing creatively for quite some time. I took it more seriously in college because I finally had a good enough way to portray some of the experiences and ideas I had.

I also thought my creative outlet grew as well as my confidence to express some of my other passions.

I also was very good at personal statements, and contest essays, as well as understanding and analyzing the meaning behind poetry throughout my academic life. I’ve even written a couple of short stories (although I consider them completely awful), and it was nice to be able to play with some other writing devices and concepts. I also hope to be able to write a book someday, but that’s going to take a little more time. My family is also very artistically inclined, my father and uncles, and some of my aunts and cousins enjoy music and art immensely.

Mathematics is my number one passion, so it’s as if I am actually the odd ball.

Talk about your creative process. What inspires you, and how do you get from an idea to a finished product?

Well my creative process goes back to what I meant abouting painting a picture. For instance, in my poem Game of Life, there are many tropes and ideas that went into this piece, so I’d thought I share them for insight into how I go about creating a piece.

In terms of idea and inspiration, I listen to music and read heavily, so I usually wait for the idea to come and it can come from anywhere. For example, the title is actually a shout out to “The Game of Death” (a Bruce Lee film) and the Game of Life board game I grew up playing as a child.

However, both are accurate portrayals of ideas I wanted.

Bruce Lee was a deep communicator of life, and the Game of Life is literally a board game in which life is simulated, so I thought “Game of Life” would be a good title. There’s a sense of deepness but also innocence, just like life, if you look at the title from this point of view.

Then I begin writing in more detail, and I try to use real experiences to express deeper meaning. For instance, being that I wanted the piece to have details of games, probabilities and chance. This reflects my idea to express being at mercy of the universe, but to also show just how precious life actually is because of that.

Furthermore, I used allusions to inner city youth, such as the simple act of going to the store may result in something negative occurring. I wanted to portray my life as an inner city youth from a violent area of Chicago through that line. Thus the piece also extends to show how everyone is at mercy of life, however some of us (especially lower income communities) are at less of a mercy due to the system in which we are apart.

I wanted to express how the “game” changes when you look at economic and social disparities. But also how life in general can be a difficult. Now I know that may seem deep, but some of my other works are more heartfelt, because as I said, inspiration can come from anywhere. Also the piece reflects my true losses I have had to random acts of gun violence in Chicago, and I wanted to emotionally portray that

part of me through this as well.

Alfred Sunaryo’s parents tried to get him to stay in Indonesia because of President Donald Trump’s “anti-immigrant” rhetoric.

Sandhiya Karunagaran feared leaving her friends and family in Malaysia.

Kaoru Ro looked forward to a newfound independence, but was nervous about being lonely and missing China.

Yi Wu wondered if he would enjoy studying in the U.S. instead of China and whether or not it would be worth it.

Pedro Henrique Koeler Goulart was scared of being alone in a foreign country instead of at his home in Brazil.

From simple worries about Wisconsin’s winter, to serious fears of adjusting to a new culture, University of Wisconsin’s international students face a variety of challenges when coming to the U.S. for higher education.

This semester, international students were met with an additional challenge: Coming to a country whose leadership has been outspokenly anti-immigrant.

With a travel ban aimed at countries with Muslim-majority populations, the rescinding of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals and the failure to adequately condemn white nationalists after violence in Charlottesville, many have speculated the Trump administration would make international students hesitant to study in the U.S.

Is Trump influencing international student enrollment?

A survey from the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers found nearly 40 percent of surveyed universities reported a decline in international student applications. According to the survey results, the highest decline in applications was from students from the Middle East, but applications from students from India and China were also impacted.

Other studies, however, have found international student enrollment remaining steady. A report by The Power of International Education found that 165 universities reported there was no single trend across the U.S. when it came to international student enrollment.

Despite national worries, international student enrollment at UW remained steady. This year’s freshmen class had 547 international students, only a slight decrease from the 551 international students in last year’s freshman class.

Though this year’s enrollment numbers were largely sustained, UW freshman Sunaryo said the political climate was a concern for his parents, and they tried to persuade him not to come to the U.S. “The political climate is definitely worrisome for my parents, especially because [Trump’s] policies are anti-immigrant,” Sunaryo said. “In Indonesia we have a vast Muslim population, one of the biggest in the world. Back in my country we think Trump is kind of crazy.”

UW sophomore Goulart finds Trump’s rhetoric regarding the travel bans “strange,” as it is custom for Brazilians to be open to meeting different people and different cultures.

“It’s really strange because in Brazil you don’t really have many people who say they don’t like international people,” Goulart said.

But some international students, like UW freshman Ro, were not affected by Trump’s presidency. Ro said the current political climate didn’t impact her decision to study in the U.S. And while the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers study showed a decline in students from the Middle East, UW actually saw the opposite.

In addition to sustained numbers, Steve Hahn, vice provost for enrollment management, said the incoming class saw an increase in diversity.

In total, UW received applications from 122 different countries for the fall 2017 semester. Thirty-seven of those countries were not in the applicant pool the year before, Hahn said.

Hahn said this is in part due to UW diversifying its international recruitment. UW has always gotten a lot of applications from China, Korea and India, but there has been an increase in applications from Latin America, the Middle East and Africa in recent years, areas that some feared would see a decrease due to Trump’s rhetoric.

“The recruitment that we’re doing in areas that we haven’t been lately, as well as scholarship opportunities for international students, has contributed to our applications increasing and that has led to a strong international community here on campus,” Hahn said.

Another reason UW consistently attracts students from around the world is because of its high ranking and reputation, Hahn said.

UW’s ranking, reputation generates worldwide appeal

When it came to ultimately choosing a university, Goulart looked at a variety of websites with lists of the best universities in the U.S. for computer science, his intended major, and ultimately decided on UW. For Sunaryo, the number of research opportunities offered was his main reason for coming to campus.

Goulart and Sunaryo are only a couple of the students who picked UW because of its academic prowess.

“The reason [international students] find UW-Madison attractive would be rooted in the excellence of our education, the opportunities for research, our strong national and international reputation, the reach of our name and the fact that we have 400,000 alumni around the world,” Hahn said.

Including upperclassmen and graduate students, UW has a total of more than 4,000 international students from more than 130 different countries and the total number of undergraduate international students has been steadily rising since 2007. UW is also consistently ranked among the top 20 universities in the U.S. for having some of the largest numbers of international students.

And having a robust international population improves campus as a whole. The diversity international students provide to the educational experience is one of the “hallmarks of a great education,” Hahn said.

“International students provide an invaluable component to our campus and enrich the academic experience for all of our students,” Hahn said.

Though UW has a strong academic reputation and appeals to many international students, these students still face challenges when it comes to adjusting to a new environment.

The challenge of transition

Being half the world away from her home country of Malaysia was an adjustment for UW junior Sandhiya.

“For me, personally, the hardest was leaving behind my friends and family back in Malaysia,” Sandhiya said. “My whole 20 years was back in Malaysia — all the festivals, celebrations, culture, traditions.”

The immigration process was also “scary” because of how far away Sandhiya is from home. The journey itself is a minimum of a day of traveling, she said.

Goulart said one of his main concerns about studying in a different country was he was going to be alone in a country away from his home — more than 4,500 miles away.

Apart from his aunt, who lives in New Jersey, the rest of Goulart’s family is in Brazil. He said his aunt helped make the transition of moving into college easier by helping him buy the necessary school supplies and preparing him for the Wisconsin winter.

“In Brazil, if you wear a shirt, you’re good for the rest of your life, but here you actually have to put layers of clothes,” Goulart said.

Goulart said many of his international friends don’t have any family in the U.S., which makes the transition even harder since it’s unrealistic for parents to take time off of work to help students move in.

In addition to the hurdles involved in simply traveling to the U.S., international students also have to adjust to a different culture when they get here.

Sandhiya said she is comfortable with the education system here, but it was a challenge for her at first.

“The way people talk and have conversations and the way things are taught in class, the whole atmosphere, it’s very different,” Sandhiya said. “People will just speak up in class, but in Malaysia people are more reserved. In the beginning getting used to the whole environment and being able to get out of my comfort zone was the most worrying, just adapting to a new culture.”

For Sunaryo, the language difference didn’t make adapting to the new culture impossible, but it was a small obstacle. Sunaryo wasn’t accustomed to the slang on campus.

Goulart didn’t find language to be a barrier for him and feels comfortable with English, but he had trouble writing essays.

“What I think was a barrier was that I’m not good at essays, not even in Portuguese,” Goulart said. “I was really glad they had the English as a Second Language program.”

Campus services make adjustment easier

International students who come to UW all take a reading and writing test which places them in the correct ESL course. The students complete the series of courses until they reach English 118 — the equivalent of the Communication A requirement. “[The ESL program] was very helpful to me in terms of academic learning,” UW sophomore Wu said.

Beyond academics, International Student Services provides a number of programs to welcome international students into the campus community.

ISS staff provides assistance concerning visas and related immigration issues, ISS director Roopa Rawjee said in an email to The Badger Herald. For instance, ISS offers advising and workshops to help students navigate changing immigration regulations.

“In addition to providing orientation for new international students, ISS provides a variety of programs to support the transition to life in the United States, intercultural competence and co-curricular development,” Rawjee said.

ISS is constantly working to serve international students and meet their evolving needs, Rawjee said. She said she is currently in the process of assessing the students’ needs and the services ISS provides.

‘No Justice:’ Illuminating or inf lammator y?

Reaction to clothing line, video prove harsh imagery directed toward police more unsettling than black, brown blood on streets As the University of Wisconsin Solidarity Editor Caucus, a coalition of students representing marginalized communities and committed to resisting all forms of injustice, we stand with Eneale Pickett. And the only thing we regret is not making a video like his earlier.

You sit cross-legged in an elementary school classroom somewhere in America.

You repeat: “With liberty and justice for all.”

Maybe you are brown or maybe you are black or maybe you are white. Your teacher tells you that in America, everyone has a voice.

They tell you to fight for what you believe in. They tell you to use your voice as a social and political platform to inspire change.

But where are they when you’re ready for them to listen?

After releasing a line of “controversial” clothing last Tuesday, UW junior Eneale Pickett has garnered widespread attention and harsh criticism once again, not only from the UW administration, but a state senator and dissenters across the nation.

But since they were unwilling to listen to demands for justice hollow into screams, then drain into cries, there was no choice but to shove it down their throats.

Pickett has only caused controversy because he created pieces of art that, for once, do not take into account a white cisgender male’s comfort nor sympathize with a white supremacist’s emotional well-being.

He unapologetically spoke his truth and shared his reality without making sure it wasn’t too radical for your sleeping eyes that desperately need to get woke.

It was not for your love and admiration. It was for Michael Brown gasping in the streets, it was for the UW administration defending a noose at a Badger football game, it was for swastika graffiti on Sellery walls, the racist, “no do rags” dress code at Brats and a police force with their finger pressed firmly on the trigger when a dark-skinned person puts their hands up.

If this is a “clear threat” to people distraught by the video, then we hope you understand that black and brown bodies experience threat as a regular component of their lives every day.

If you can vote for a president that is racist, sexist, homophobic, a white supremacist and a rapist to run the country we live in — the country that black bodies built — Pickett has every right to create a video that forces you to reevaluate the work you do to contribute

If you’re willing to retweet a hashtag but not attempt to understand this commercial, then those hashtags obviously are not working in forcing people to think critically about the issues plaguing our nation and our campus today.

To dismantle the institution that is “helping the cops burn my body” and expose Lady Justice for the fraud she is, voices like Pickett’s need to be amplified until we get your attention. Not blocked, censored and silenced.

You can swipe out of Twitter when you’ve had enough of a hashtag, but black and brown bodies can find no refuge from a system built to profit on their blood.

As students of color, as people who face oppression and racism engraved into their everyday life, we support and stand behind the video that spoke for the silenced voices which were never too discomforting for you to pay attention to.

The video was meant to make you talk about it, to confront a police force that doesn’t reflect diversity in religion, ethnicity and gender, to prove to you that the police is your form of safety but our biggest threat.

If this video is “violent,” then what do you call what happened to Tamir Rice, Rodney King, Michael Brown, Kendra James and all the other souls whose lives were cut short at the hands of your criminal “justice” system?

My view was engendered through calm discourse and positive interactions with the less privileged side of life I never witnessed from within my bubble, experiences in the Milwaukee area with my mother ’s students and reasonable discourse with those who disagreed with me were the key to “opening my eyes.”

But, blunt anger, similar to the kind displayed by the controversial clothing line released by University of Wisconsin student Eneale Pickett is ultimately unproductive to the cause it works toward.

The anger expressed by the clothing line and its controversial advertisement is certainly not baseless.

rather than tell a group of hyperactive six year olds about stranger danger — creating the sense of awe and wonder that enforced my one dimensional worldview.

Until I finished high school, I would confidently state that “the black community needs to clean up its act” or “racism doesn’t exist in modern America.”

This was not due to the way I was raised at home, in fact, it was in spite of it — these views came from the community I grew up in.

Partially thanks to my wonderful mother, who was a teacher at both Milwaukee Public Schools and Brown Deer High School, and personal introspection about my beliefs in the

Americans versus white Americans. This statistic is a basic one — it illustrates simply one part of a system that is unfairly skewed toward whites.

For the sake of brevity, however I will not continue arguing regarding institutional racism, doing so would be unproductive to this piece. What I seek to assert here is that inflammatory rhetoric attracts the kind of anger and negative attention to a cause that prevents the long-term changes that it seeks from occurring.

A very similar and timely example would be the Black Lives Matter movement. The policy goals outlined by the movement are reasonable and difficult to argue against, such as the institution of independent reviews of police actions or the large-scale implementation of police body cams.

However, American opinion of the movement is largely negative or ambivalent, with only 43 percent of American’s total supporting it, while experiencing only 60 percent of support among black people.

The negative public opinion of the movement is largely created by occasionally inflammatory tactics instead of ignoble goals.

Choices such as interrupting a gay pride parade in Toronto or blocking off an entire Milwaukee freeway during rush hour, while uncommon for the movement, created negative media coverage that allowed those who oppose the movement to cultivate negative opinion.

The incredibly inflammatory clothing line and ads for it will only achieve the same unhelpful anger that those moments did.

Furthermore, the clothing line appears to call for violence against officers. There are many officers that abuse their position, it is true, but there are also many officers that take the job out of necessity or a sense of justice.

Reprisal for the actions of the few is irrational and cruel. Even if officers are part of a broken and unjust system, it is not their fault that it is one, it is the fault of entrenched racism and lack of legislative action to correct it.

Sending officers into the streets nervous is a recipe for deadly mistakes.

Ultimately, this clothing line enforces the same “Saturday morning cartoon” worldview.

The world becomes the story of a heroic few standing up against the vile, gluttonous pigs that seek to destroy all they stand for, thus the cycle of division continues.

College courses should always center around providing students with applicable skills and knowledge that will be of use in today’s landscape.

Nothing is more draining than attending and working hard in a class where you feel you’re only participating for a grade, and not for the experience the course can provide.

Instead, courses that challenge you to apply your knowledge to genuine activity can be the most rewarding.

Chemistry courses that require students to practice concepts in a lab setting make those ideas more accessible later on, as physical participation cements ideas long term.

Journalism courses that ask students to pitch real story ideas and subsequently report on their findings, giving each participant real experience in the field and can hook them on the journalistic process.

The common thread between each of these examples is that such activities are not optional, and their mandatory nature forces students to apply their knowledge in a medium separate from exams and quizzes.

The value in this is clear as the hallmark of a college education is real-world preparation. Classes should be designed to do so, and those with mandatory professional practice are the most effective.

Ideally, all classes should implement some form of this experience, but it becomes difficult when addressing classes in the sociologic, historic and anthropologic categories.

Courses under those distinctions deal with abstract theories that are tough to put into practice in a way that specifically outlines their definitions.

You can read passage after passage outlining the effects of institutionalized racism, but, at day’s end, the fact remains that if you don’t experience said effects in your daily life, your main association with its outcomes will be with the text you just read, and ideas that are made real by lived experience stick more than ideas read and forgotten.

Instead of only reading about abstract topics, conversation is a principle way to gain a desired deeper understanding.

However, discussions of uncomfortable topics are just as they seem — uncomfortable.

Speaking with an undocumented immigrant on issues of immigration or citizenship status can be enriching, memorable and greeted with passion from the selected individual, but could also result in the tokenization of that individual’s voice.

Additionally, although confronting discomforts can lead to personal growth, many cannot reach a mental state where they’ve built enough courage to discuss such topics, regardless of how much they wish to.

My proposed solution is this: Classes that cover topics of identity, social justice and/ or societal theory should be provocative in encouraging protest attendance, even adding extra credit as a bonus.

Two things are accomplished through this method. First, it establishes the link between course concepts and lived experience.

Imagine being a student learning about gender inequality for the first time, and attending a Women’s Mar–ch soon after.

That sort of continuation of course concepts acts in the same way a lab would, personifying otherwise abstract concepts, and making them real in the student’s eyes.

Second, it removes any confrontational discomfort that may accompany a desire to learn more about such topics. By attending a protest, you have the luxury to choose your level of involvement.

Some may choose to participate, while others may wish to only observe and actively listen to the messages that resound.

In both cases, the students will ideally walk away with a fresh perspective.

Next time you attend classes with these topics at its forefront, think about what your professor does to make them come to life.

If you feel there’s more to be done, suggest an extra credit assignment revolving around an upcoming protest, or even mentioning one as it relates to course topics.

You may be surprised by how much clearer the abstract becomes once you’ve heard people share their very real stories.

College students are quite possibly some of the most stressful tenants a landlord could imagine. We’re messy, we’re loud and for the most part, we’re completely broke. College houses — minus the Greek mansions that mimic the style of old southern plantation houses — are sort of disgusting. The paint is peeling, porches sag, lights are missing and there’s generally an air of must and old beer permeating the premises.

Regardless of the condition the houses or apartments are in, landlords retain the ability to charge exorbitant amounts of money for rent because students need somewhere to live in a very particular area around campus.

Landlords often require security deposits equaling about a month’s rent at signing that, theoretically, will be refunded once your lease is up and the house is found to be in a relatively decent state.

New tenants, however, should not be punished for the uncleanliness of those who lived in the apartment prior to them.

Considering the move-out date for most renters is just a few days prior to the movein date for the new tenants, landlords and cleaning companies are given an extremely marginal amount of time to make any bigger fixes to any damage.

Thankfully for my roommates and I, our house was in decent shape when we moved in, especially considering we moved in just a day after the old tenants moved out. With this said, paint was peeling, both the refrigerator and dishwasher left puddles on the kitchen floor anytime either one was used, blinds were missing from multiple windows, lights didn’t work or didn’t have covers.

More problematic was the missing lock on a window, doors being unable to close and the Mt. Everest of trash piled in front of our porch, a sort of housewarming gift from the past tenants.

Landlords and management companies should not be allowed to get away with both overcharging for properties and not at least making an effort to properly clean and repair them before students move in.

It should not take an entire house of four apartments numerous phone calls ranging from passive aggressive to full on complaints about trash to get it taken away more than a week

late.

More pressing, however, is the fact that these landlords and management companies can get away with leasing decrepit apartments to students because otherwise we have nowhere to live.

University housing doesn’t have nearly enough rooms to accommodate the 31,000 undergraduate students, in fact, only around 7,400 of them are in university housing. The alternative to student housing is one of two things: A $1,000 a month apartment in the likes of The James or The Hub, or a still overpriced but much less so apartment at a smaller complex, or in a house.

Props to whoever’s parents can afford a $1,000 a month rent bill, or to whatever student who somehow is just not nearly as broke as the rest of us and is paying that type of rent out of their own pocket. But for a large portion of students, that’s just not a feasible sum.

So we’re left with one choice: Off-campus housing that ranges from semi-decent to approaching squalor, depending on if the company in charge of the housing has enough motivation to keep their properties from completely disintegrating into disrepair.

Having one realistic choice is not a great thing to begin with. Add in the factors of distance from campus, relative cleanliness of the apartment, size, price and unresponsive landlords, and that one choice gets infinitely more difficult to deal with.

Management companies and landlords understand their power in the student housing market, and have used this power to justify the state of some of the properties available to students by “lowering” already high prices or by slapping a fresh coat of paint on the walls and hoping students and their parents overlook the leaking appliances and flickering lights.

College is expensive and semi-gross enough as is (think of all of the subpar beer and ramen noodles you’ve consumed thus far in your college career if you need a reminder as to why college is disgusting).

We certainly don’t need landlords jacking prices up on houses and then not keeping them in a condition most people deem livable.

As mine construction threatens native land, Wisconsin politicians must take action Short-lived endeavor threatens to pollute local water supply, economic health of region, tribe’s holiest spot

A proposed mine in Michigan, 150 feet from the Wisconsin border, threatens Northeastern Wisconsin. The Back Forty Mine would be built on the banks of the Menominee River, and residents and a multitude of city and county governments fear possible contamination of their drinking water and pollution in nearby Lake Michigan.

The Menominee Tribe has also spoken out forcefully against the mine, citing its encroachment on their cultural heritage, the mine’s large size and the potential for damage.

Opponents fear acid leaking into the Menominee River, contaminating both the river and Green Bay. The local economy relies on the area’s stunning natural beauty and the vitality of its water, but, an accident at the mine could forever alter the landscape and the area’s future.

In addition to threatening the economic health of the region, the mine threatens the actual health of the communities who draw their water from Green Bay. The region’s culture and well-being are intimately

connected to water — acid contamination would jeopardize both.

Aquila resources, the company behind the Back Forty Mine, claims it would safeguard the area’s natural resources while bringing economic development to the region.

However, the proposed mine is enormous, standing at 2,000 feet wide, 2,500 feet long and more than 750 feet deep.

Aquila is likely confident in its ability to protect the river, but no one plans to have an accident. Most residents are understandably wary — why gamble with the health of water, something fundamental to the rhythms of life?

Furthermore, the mine would only have an eight-year life. I’m not attempting to minimize the effect of good jobs, but Aquila’s claims of an economic revitalization ring hollow if it’s over and done with in eight years.

Perhaps the most vocal critic of the project has been the Menominee Tribe. The mine would be built on land containing Menominee artifacts and in close proximity to sacred ground. Contamination of the river would threaten their holiest space, the mouth of the Menominee River at Green Bay.

Understandably, the Tribe spoke out forcefully against the potential desecration of their land and water. Aquila continues to ignore the protestations of the Menominee Tribe, a glaring and shameful error. The Tribe deserves a voice in this process.

Despite Wisconsinites’ many legitimate concerns, their current options are limited as the proposed mine is in Michigan, and state authorities are primarily responsible for the regulatory process. The EPA is reviewing the process, but it’s unclear whether they will step in.

Meanwhile, Wisconsin’s representatives are conspicuously silent. Although Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., sent a letter to the EPA, more action is still required.

Northeastern Wisconsin needs unequivocal support in Madison and Washington DC but, by and large, politicians on both sides of the aisle have not spoken up. It’s time for that to change. It’s time for serious action to safeguard a precious resource.

Vanity, academic laziness, exorbitantly priced books detract from students’ education College campuses meant to be places of diverse opinions, open discussions, both of which are hampered by professors pushing personal agendas

We have an issue on college campuses across America, a habit of limited thought and self-serving attitude that runs contrary to the goals of institutions of higher learning — and it isn’t about free speech.

Professors that assign their own book in the syllabi of their class are academically lazy.

Put aside STEM teachers who may have legitimate reasons for this and we are left with professors that prioritize their own vanity over the well-being of their students.

Bearing similarities to the censorship of conservative ideas on college campuses, professors that assign their own books for a class are promoting a single viewpoint on their subject matter.

In a 15-week semester, the professor has ample time to plead their case, explain their ideas and advocate for their viewpoints.

Rather than allowing students to form their own ideas from various sources on the subject matter, they are instead fed the same ideas in lecture, in reading and on exams.

This is just not the best way to learn.

It is doubtful that any professor would claim to be the sole proprietor of wisdom in their field, so they shouldn’t build a class that way.

Not to mention the questionable ethics of a professor profiting off of their captive students — forced to buy their textbook, blackmailed by the threat of a poor grade.

Obviously professors are not showered in wealth from this enterprise, but nonetheless, it’s a gray area.

A liberal economics professor would do well to assign a conservative textbook and discuss the ideas openly in class, willingly giving their opinion, but acknowledging that it is indeed an opinion, not fact.

College classes shouldn’t be about the professor ’s ideas alone. It would be great if they were about the professor ’s ideas regarding other people’s work, as this opens up the discussion to questions, different angles and analysis.

Textbooks are expensive enough. Some estimates find that students spend about $600 on average on textbooks every year, shouldn’t this be spent on broadening horizons rather

than narrowing them?

There is also the issue of the awkward nature of having an honest discussion with the author of the textbook.

Nobody wants to piss off their professor by disagreeing with their work or even misrepresenting it.

In a perfect world, a professor would be open to criticism of their work, but more often than not, the same professor who finds it necessary to shape a class around their own textbook is probably not the most affable receiver of criticism.

At the very least, as it’s obvious this bogus practice will continue for the foreseeable future, professors should include a section on the syllabus of their reasoning.

Olympic Games threaten Badger hockey, key players to leave As 2018 winter Olympic games in South Korea approaches, both men’s and women’s teams will be impacted this year

With the 2018 Olympic games, many are wondering how Wisconsin hockey is going to be impacted during the games.

With so much changing this year, many details are up in the air right now regarding men’s and women’s hockey. We’ll break down the major issues that both teams need to be concerned about when approaching the 2018 games in South Korea.

Men’s hockey:

With Wisconsin’s head coach Don Granato accepting the head coaching position for this year’s Olympic team, it is possible that Granato will be called away from the UW for periods of time to deal with important matters regarding the national team.

Thankfully, men’s Olympic hockey isn’t like women’s Olympic hockey, in which players train from the time that they are selected in late July/early August until it is time to leave for the games. Men’s hockey players will typically

train only four weeks prior to the start of the Olympics.

This rule used to be in place back when NHL players comprised the majority of countries Olympic rosters. However, when the NHL prohibited players from competing in the Olympics, this meant that a new group of players became eligible to play for their countries, and this rule doesn’t really apply to them.

Collegiate hockey players, and perhaps some minor league players, will now compose the entirety of a chosen Olympic team, which means that it is highly possible for one of our own here at Wisconsin to be selected to play in the Olympics this year.

Most countries have either already had their tryouts or, like in the case of the United States, will hold them closer to the actual Olympic games. US men’s hockey tryouts are set for November, meaning that any potential players who are interested in trying out for an Olympic spot could miss a week or two of hockey.

For the most part, the NCAA has gone through a lot of work to ensure that the Olympics will have minimal influence on the men’s hockey world. This is still a situation that is mostly unknown, so more is likely to reveal itself as the year progresses.

Women’s hockey:

Women’s hockey doesn’t have the same scheduling issue as men’s, so this is more familiar territory for coaches to deal with. In terms of UW women’s hockey, head coach Mark Johnson is going to have to deal with the loss of his top two forwards, Annie Pankowski and Emily Clark.

Both Pankowski and Clark made their respective Olympic teams, USA for Pankowski and Canada for Clark, back in July. This meant that Johnson had relatively little time to plan for the departure of these two stellar athletes.

Pankowski and Clark will both be absent for the entire year, since both Olympic teams train throughout the school year. The absence of these two veterans is crucial this year,

especially after Wisconsin lost so many good players in 2017.

Pankowski and Clark come from a small class of players, with only four other seniors remaining in Madison. Both women were fearsome opponents on the ice and knew how to create scoring opportunities in any situation, which is always a valuable asset for any team to have.

But the best asset that Wisconsin has is none other than there head coach Johnson, who has been in this situation multiple times during his tenure at UW. Johnson knows how to deal with major roster changes like these and is sure to have a plan in place to help his young team through these times.

Overall, because the Olympics are a special event, and this might be the only shot that some players have to play for an Olympic team, any offsets caused by this year’ games are surely worth it. This is a time for athletes to show their talent on a global stage, and show the world what kind of athletes the UW produces.

UW freshmen step up across sports, show promise for future

In Camp Randall, running back Johnathan Taylor has taken the reins. Usually dominant, the Badgers struggled a bit with their run game last year, but Taylor is looking to change that He already has 438 rushing yards in just three games, including one 128-yard game and a 223-yard game. He is currently averaging 8.3 yards per game. Taylor follows a long succession of talented New Jersey running backs to make their names known in Wisconsin.

Heisman winner Ron Dayne, and Badger star Corey Clement both grew up with in an hour of Taylor’s hometown of Salem, New Jersey. Taylor originally committed to play for Rutgers, but ultimately decided Wisconsin would offer him the best chance to compete for Big Ten championships.

It seems Taylor made the right decision. If he remains healthy, he and the Badgers will have the opportunities to accomplish their goals.

Over in the Field House, two freshman volleyball players are making waves. Setter Sydney Hilley and middle blocker Dana Rettke have thus far lead the Badgers to an impressive start to the season. Sydney Hilley was a highly-touted recruit coming into Wisconsin.

She was the No. 3 prospect in the nation and the No. 1 player at her position. Her commitment to the Badgers is in part what allowed Wisconsin to have the No. 2 recruiting class in the nation.

Hilley has been described by head coach Kelly Sheffield and her teammates as one of those players who strives to make everyone better around her. Hilley had big shoes to fill at the setter position. The role was recently occupied by four-time All-American, Lauren Carlini who after spending the summer playing with the United States women’s national team, is playing professionally in Italy.

Hilley graduated early from high school and enrolled at the university for spring semester to have the opportunity to train with Carlini. Ultimately, she is trying to be the best Sydney Hilley she can be, and so far, she seems to be doing a good job.

GRIFFIN BARELA

DANA RETTKE

Griffin Barela is a freshman golf player who came into Wisconsin as the No. 58 golfer in the country and the No. 1 golfer in his home state of Colorado. Before arriving in Madison he had six top-10 finishes and playing in the U.S. Junior, and head coach Michael Burin predicted Barela would have a smooth transition into colligate golf. Sure enough, he has.

The men’s golf team opened their season for the Badger Invitational at University Ridge Golf Course where they finished fifth as a team. Barela finished eighth overall after shooting three subpar rounds, which earned him Big Ten golfer of the week. He was the first Badger to earn this award since Jack Watson in April 2015. Additionally, he is only the second Wisconsin freshman to accomplish this feat.

Barela is just one of eight Wisconsin men’s golfers to do this. Thus far, Barela is off to a hot start, and his team will continue to look to him as a consistent source of success.

The freshman class of 2021 came into UW ready to make an impact, and across the board they are putting on shows and giving impressive performances in each of their respective sports.

Dana Rettke towers over most people at the university and on her team. Standing at 6-foot8, she is the tallest female athlete in Wisconsin history. Rettke was the No. 8 recruit coming into college, and she is certainly making her presence known. Rettke also enrolled at Wisconsin a semester early so she and Hilley could work on the imperative connection between setters and middle blockers.

Rettke also had big shoes to fill on the volleyball court. Haleigh Nelson was a four-year starter and All-American who is now spending her last year of academic eligibility playing sand volleyball at LSU. Before Rettke arrived at Wisconsin, Sheffield considered redshirting her, but that idea clearly went out the door when he realized how dominant she is on the court.

Because of her size and athleticism, teams have a hard time slowing her down. Rettke has proved herself as an important part of the Wisconsin volleyball squad.

UW women’s hockey looks toward new season with hope Team anticipating powerful comeback after disappointing 3-0 loss to Clarkson in last year’s NCAA championship

After a disappointing end to their 2016-2017 season, the University of Wisconsin women’s hockey team is looking at an uphill battle during the 201-2018 season.

For starters, UW lost arguably one of the most talented classes of players that they ever had in 2017. After Ann-Renee Desbiens, Mellissa Channell, Jenny Ryan, Sarah Nurse, Sydney McKibbon, and Mikaela Johnson all graduated in the spring, the Badgers would find themselves down their first line on the defensive side, and almost their entire second line on the offensive side.

Not to mention, Wisconsin lost one of the best goaltenders that they have seen in program history.

Desbiens made keeping pucks out of the net look easy, and as she kept racking up the honors, it almost looked impossible to replace her.

While losing seven players might not seem that detrimental, the Badgers would be dealt another devastating blow when summer rolled around. Annie Pankowski and Emily Clark both got called up to play for their respective Olympic teams, Pankowski for the USA and Clark for Canada.

Pankowski and Clark were the first and third highest scorers for the UW respectively, and their presence was a key element in transitioning this team into the 2017-2018 season.

With both of them gone, UW would need to rebuild their first two lines, which is rare in college hockey.

These losses might explain why the UW, who ended last season at No.1 in the WCHA, was ranked No.2 in the WCHA coaches preseason poll. In fact, coaches believed that these losses would be so devastating that the Badgers would even lose the WCHA championship title, which they have held for the past three years.

The schedule this year also poses it’s own challenge, because the Badgers will head to Washington D.C. in November to play Northeastern and Boston University, two very strong east coast teams. Wisconsin does not usually get the chance to play an east coast team during the regular season, and this could pose a whole new threat for the Badgers.

These games came into play due to the recent hole filled by the departure of the North Dakota women’s hockey team from the WCHA. After financial issues plagued the college, it was decided that the University would cut their women’s hockey program.

North Dakota was always a great opponent for the Badgers, and their loss is a devastating loss for the WCHA, who lost one of the most talented teams in their division.

North Dakota was one of Wisconsin’s largest rivals in women’s hockey, and usually became a fearsome opponent during play-off time.

With the absence of the North Dakota team, the WCHA needed to fill team’s schedule in any way that they possibly could, and one of the ways that they chose to do this was by opening up their regular season schedule to their east coast counterparts. Wisconsin is playing two of the best east coast teams when they go to D.C., making their schedule that much more challenging.

With the absence of Pankowski and Clark, the UW has a challenging year ahead of them. This year ’s freshman class is on of the largest in UW history, and a majority of the roster this year consists of underclassman.

Ella Guo The Badger Herald changes to their schedule. Usually, Wisconsin has the honor of hosting rival and main competition Minnesota during the first half of the season, with the Badgers then traveling to Minneapolis during the second half of the season.

This year, Wisconsin goes to Minnesota first, and the Badgers will end their season with the border battle.

Another strange this is how early this game happens in the season. The matchup between the two teams in Minneapolis is currently scheduled for the end of October, rather than the end of November as it usually is.

Of course, one of the biggest changes this season is not on the schedule, it is on the ice. Desbiens was one of the greatest assets that Wisconsin had on its side, and trying to fill in her shoes is not an easy job.

Of course, Wisconsin head coach Mark Johnson knew that this was a problem that he was going to have to deal with eventually, and if there is one person who knows how to make lemonade out of lemons, it is Johnson.

When Desbiens missed four games last season due to a concussion, Johnson was quick and getting then freshman netminder Nikki Cece in between the pipes so that she could get some practical experience.

Cece showed a lost of promise during her time in net for the Badgers, and even managed to gain her first shutout during her short tenure as goaltender. It was clear that Johnson knew that he was doing when he began recruiting these players almost two years ago.

This year might be a rough one for Wisconsin, who will be a rather young team trying to learn as they begin their regular season. While it might be irrational to expect them to be as successful as the 2016-2017 team was, but there is a great chance that this team will still pave the way for a successful season in 2017-2018.
