Best Off-Campus Bar: Great Dane The Great Dane is one of the few places in downtown Madison that will take you as you are. The warmly lit, inviting entry leads to the pub restaurant on the right. The cozy, yet dignified bar right in front looks out over King Street and to the actual brewery, replete with pool tables and an even bigger bar devoted to beer to the left. The bartenders are proud and quick to pour their cheap, but quality house-made beer with the utmost confidence. One of its signature features, the old-school basement seating, sets the downtown Great Dane location apart from any other restaurant

in Madison. Although often closed for private events, its low-key atmosphere is reminiscent of simpler times before the “gastropub” had yet to enter the vernacular. The exposed rock walls invoke an otherworldly sense — that whiskey ginger wouldn’t be nearly as fun to drink if it were sipped next to 84 people in Whiskey Jack’s or on the Vintage patio. The nosh is also worth noting. Capitol Square mainstays like Graze, the Old Fashioned and Cooper’s may have an edge on those looking for a specific experience, but they lack what the Great Dane does so well: straightforward, no

Marissa Haegele The Badger Herald frills menu options, some Wisconsin-centric, others just solid comfort food. The poutine is sure to satisfy, as will the mac and cheese that goes great with their Peck’s Pilsner. It may not be the most refined establishment in town, but The Great Dane’s solid beer selection, earnest ambiance and great food make it the Herald’s top pick for the ideal off-campus bar experience. From the loud Friday night turnup to the subdued Sunday meetup, this place will undoubtedly impress the lack of pretension that Wisconsin is so endearingly known for.

STORAGE SERVICES

It’s not everyday that you come across figurines of cows and the three wise monkeys while strolling down the street. But that’s just one of the many quirks State Street Brats has to offer. Providing a haven for sports fans, partygoers and hungry guests all at once, Brats, as it’s more fondly called, is known for being more than just another college bar. It comprises two floors-worth of fun activities for people of all ages and interests. While watching your favorite game, you can enjoy their delicious brats served with a side of ice cold Wisconsin beer and all the condiments (you only need mustard though) in the world. Their cheese curds aren’t something you’d forget either. Though their food service ends early, you can take advantage of their daily drink specials until 2 a.m. Lively music and arcade-style games add to the fun. State Street Brats also offers intimate indoor seating so you can enjoy a night out or game day with your closest buds. Or if you prefer to enjoy the outdoors, a decorated patio spills onto the intersection between Frances and State streets. Whether your team wins or loses, State Street Brats gives you the chance to celebrate or drink away your sorrows in true Wisconsin style – with brats, beer and cheese! Don’t forget to grab a quick selfie with the monkeys and cow!

STUDENT CHOICE

In this hardly-stable-just-barely-holding-on world of uncertainty, disloyalty and fake news, there is little to count on. By the Herald’s count, we are faced with only two truths: 1) the impending doom of climate change, and 2) arriving at The Plaza Tavern at 10:15 pm on a Thursday to be greeted by a line snaking from the doors all the way down Henry, where latecomers dispersed in the parking lot of a Vietnamese restaurant are either smoking a cigarette, peeing behind a dumpster or blasting Anderson .Paak from their cracked iPhone 6s. Rain or shine or blizzard or torrential downpour or finals week.

Best Drink Specials: The Plaza Tavern How, you might ask, can Plaza seduce its loyal patrons to return Thursday after Thursday, no questions asked? What sly trickery is at play? Allow me to explain. $2.50 Long Islands. Try that on your boyfriend and he might call back. But if he doesn’t, the outpour of admiration, kisses and dark red lipstick you’ll be greeted with from the women in the restroom will save your night. When you emerge through the doors back into the bar and stumble to your table, the warm radiance of love will envelop you in a little bubble of wholesome memes, seven new friends and, holy shit, I cannot be this drunk already.

@badgerherald

If the $2.50 Long Island Thursdays (did I mention $3.00 craft beer pints?) aren’t enough for you, just return on Friday, for $2.50 rail mixers and $2.00 PBR pints, or Saturday, for $2.50 domestic bottles. Weekday kinda drinker? Hardly-stable-justbarely-holding-on kinda drinker? Mondays feature $2.00 rail drinks and PBR for $1.50. Tuesday’s, enjoy $1 off ½ pitchers, $2 off full pitchers and $3.50 Irish and Gin. On Wednesday, come practice for Thursday with $3.50 Jack, Absolut and Stoli drinks or $3.00 Wisconsin bottles. And Thursday - meet you there.

Best 21st Bar: Nitty Gritty Known as the “Official Birthday Place,” the Nitty Gritty is an obvious choice for the best 21st birthday bar. Start out your night by getting a free balloon and celebratory mug. Continue the celebrations with free soda, cocktails or beer. Choose between the red or purple drink or maybe try all of them in one night. Before going to the bar area of the restaurant, check out the food menu and get a burgers to sustain you for the duration of the night. With Power Hour deals every night even friends will have a great time celebrating. Plus, each friend will have a great time choosing different fun flavored shots to buy for the birthday girl or boy. Make sure to sign up for the Birthday Club!

Best Trivia Night: Chasers Bar & Grille Awarded “Best Trivia Night” was Chasers Bar and Grille, located at 319 W Gorham Street. Whether you have been there or not, many know Chasers to be a destination with a lot of energy and good spirits, especially on Trivia night. Every Tuesday night, the bar and grille welcomes all to participate in their weekly trivia competitions. In addition to this event, the bar advocates for their “select appetizer special” starting at $5 each, as well as featured pitchers at $7. In addition to Tuesday nights, Chasers also is known for its other nightly specials, which 4 • badgerherald.com • April 27, 2017

include both food and drink. On the weekends, the bar specializes in $5 Bloody Mary’s and screwdrivers, as well as $8 New Belgium and Goose Island pitchers. Monday night features $0.60 wings alongside $3 select taps. Wednesday night is Taco night, with tacos starting at $0.50 each, in addition to $4 Jumbo Margaritas. Chasers is also a popular destination for Thirsty Thursday plans, with burgers $5 each and pitchers starting a $7. Friday night mixes things up a bit with something called “WheelN-Deal,” described as a different special every 30 minutes. However, to start off the

night, there are $5 Fish Tacos from 3-4 p.m. Another common draw for Chasers is the outdoor patio. Walking by the venue on any afternoon with the temperature above 60 degrees, there will most likely be a horde gathered outside and enjoying the weather, as well as the drinks and food from the bar. With patio season in full-swing right now, Chasers seems like the perfect destination. With deals and an atmosphere like this, it is no wonder Chasers won the Student Choice Award for “Best Trivia Night” — the weekly activity only adds to the positive aspects of this bar and grille.

Best Smoke Shop: The Pipefitter Aye bro, if you need a sweet spot to find a toke, Pipefitter is the plug. This dank spot has got all your smoke needs, and also so much more. If you’re looking for a new pipe to puff puff pass some (tobacco), Pipefitter has cool glassware at affordable prices. If you’re looking for some goofy gifts for your comedic-driven friends, they have that too. Pipefitter can fit your pipe with tons of different necessities for all your smoking needs. They even sell Halloween gear at affordable prices during the festive season. Pipefitter prides themselves on the locally-made glassware they sell in the shop. Supporting local art, all pieces are created by Wisconsin glass artists. Their glassware is an array of colors and designs, where purchasing an affordable piece is a challenge simply because they’re great options.

Best Off-Campus Restaurant: The Old Fashioned When it comes to Madison, there is nothing more iconic than The Old Fashioned. The state itself thrives on the drink. When visiting other states, no one fully understands how to make a “Wisconsin” old fashioned, so visiting The Old Fashioned guarantees the most perfect rendition. Apart from the top notch drinks, the menu consistently stuns with local ingredients, flavorful fish fry and of course cheese curds. If looking for something fun, try out the hot dog. It’s so easy to add a bunch of different toppings, but the toughest might be choosing between only one or two hot dogs from Baranek’s Farm. While the standard menu is great, what might be even better –– the brunch menu offered on Saturdays and Sundays. There are classics like Bagel and Lox or Belgian Waffles, but there are opportunities to try new combinations. If you thought fish fry was just for Friday nights, you’ll quickly find out the walleye and eggs top any Friday Night Fish Fry plus the rosemary potatoes perfectly complement the fish. When parents visit, make sure to take them to The Old Fashioned, all of you will love it.

Best Late Night Food & Favorite Pizza Joint: Ian’s

STUDENT CHOICE

There are few things that remain certain in an ever-changing world, but if there is one thing inebriated college kids can always count on. It’s the gooey, cheesy warm pleasure of a slice of Ian’s pizza.

In the mood for mac n’ cheese? No problem. Feeling a bit adventurous today? Smokey The Bandit slice has got you covered. Trying out being vegan? Don’t worry, there’s a slice for that.

A little-known fact to the average 20-yearold-something drunkard stumbling into the pizza joint after 1 a.m., Ian’s also hosts weekly open mic nights to keep a casual, fun vibe for patrons of all ages.

With only two locations in Madtown — one on the 100 block of State Street and the other on North Frances — Ian’s gives all other joints a run for their money and marinara with their specialty slices and classic favorites.

While Ian’s is most known for their pizza, they also serve speciality salads that will satisfy even the most dedicated yogi looking to avoid the temptation of ‘za after an early morning workout.

With great bites and decent prices, it comes as no surprise that this year’s best late night food and favorite pizza joint goes to the Madison staple that is Ian’s.

Best Hangover Food: Shortstack Short Stack Eatery is a local favorite that is known for its locally sourced ingredients and wonderful pancakes. Breakfast is served all day much to the excitement of the local population. Many who venture out to eat at Short Stack order the blind special which changes daily. There are no questions asked about the special — you don’t know what you get until you get it. If you are scared, you can ask what the blind special is for the day but it will cost you an extra charge. Short Stack is a fun and unique place to have breakfast. You wait in a line to place your order and then you pick a place to sit. You aren’t waited on like at other restaurants. Short Stack tends to get very busy at certain times of the day, especially on the weekends when it is open from 6 a.m. on Saturday all the way until 9 p.m. on Sunday. If one ventures toward the Capitol on the weekend, they have a chance of seeing a line spilling out of the doors waiting to place an order and find a table at Short Stack Eatery. Short Stack is just a fun place with a welcoming vibe that caters to all types of people. There is food for all tastes and its continent location on State Street makes it easy for locals and visitors alike to come, especially on nice day in the spring and summer. Short Stack provides great food and a great vibe for a reasonable price.

Best Landlord/Property: Madison Property Management Whether you’re a graduate student scrambling for a place to live last minute, or a sophomore signing a lease 10 months in advance, or just someone looking to live in Madison, you’ve probably interacted with Madison Property Management (MPM) in one way or another. And if you haven’t signed a lease with Madison Property Management, it’s probably safe to assume you’ve encountered one of their places one (drunken) time or another. Maybe you’ve had a great experience with them. Possibly you’ve had an unfortunate one. Or maybe you haven’t had any sort of experience with MPM at all. Either way, Madison Property Management has been a mainstay in the Madison housing market for the last three decades. They’ve been housing the great people of Madison since MPM was established in 1988 and have grown incredibly since, now offering over 3,500 places to choose from. Given their wide variety of listings at a broad range of prices — from brand-new apartment complexes to old, run-down “college” houses (ideal) — It’s probably safe to say that MPM offers something for almost anyone looking to live in the Madison area.

Best Place to Cure Your Sweet Tooth: Greenbush The Madison-famous Greenbush Bakery is a classic staple when you’re in need of that late night sweet treat. Located on Regent Street directly next to Rocky Rococo’s, Greenbush is the convenient spot to score some sugar for anyone in the south campus area. With donuts as far as the eye can see, their diverse selection offers flavors the mind can’t even fathom until the sweet glaze caresses your lips. The dangerously tasteful donuts are unmatched by any other in the greater Madison area. Seemingly unaffected by inflation, Greenbush prices remain at one dollar a donut – making it a contender for “best bang for your buck” in Madison. Be careful not to get carried away if you decide all those sweet holed cakes are the right choice, because then you’ll walk away with too many donuts! However, Greenbush treats make for a great party surprise, so spare a few bucks and bring your friends some donuts! Mmm my tongue is smacking my lips just thinking about those sweet buns!

There is no more delicious occasion than a Friday night burger feast at Dotty Dumpling’s Dowry on Francis between University Avenue and Johnson Street. Upon sitting down in this cozy, dimly lit and always-cheery room, first-timers might be disappointed with the lack of actual dumplings on this Madison establishment’s menu. But fear not, the food at Dotty’s more than make up for this misnomer. Any good meal at Dotty’s might have to start with one of several appetizers, including deep fried mac-n-cheese or the Sconnie favorite

Best Burger: Dotty’s Dumplings Dowry cheese curds. But UW students know that if you’re going to Dotty’s, you’re there for the burgers. That’s why Dotty’s is our “best burger” winner for the 2017 Badger Herald Student Choice Awards. Creativity reigns supreme on the menu, with burgers like “The Melting Pot” featuring three different types of cheese, bacon and a ridiculously delicious garlic sauce. It’s their bestseller for a reason. On top of that, Dotty’s offers diners a chance to customize their own burgers, with dozens of cheeses, classic burger toppers, sauces and

Ben Pierce The Badger Herald

special toppings to choose from. For those less inclined to have a delicious Dotty’s beef patty, they also have lamb, turkey and bison burgers as well as vegetarian and vegan burger options. Regardless of which option you choose, it’s pretty clear that Dotty’s has the best burgers on campus. Hordes of students can almost always been seen waiting outside of Dotty’s blizzard or shine. Why? Because we know that hands down, Dotty Dumpling’s Dowry has the best burgers in Madison.

Best Sandwich: Potbelly In terms of “on-the-go” food for students, there might be nothing more practical and delicious than a sub sandwich. As every UW student knows, Madison is rife with sandwich shops. It feels like at every corner there is a Subway, Jimmy John’s or Milio’s waiting for you. But there is one UW spot that reigns supreme in the mind of students: Potbelly Sandwich Shop. Located on State Street next door to Whiskey Jack’s saloon and across the street from The Hub apartments, Potbelly is a comfortable, cozy spot for students to grab a delicious meal year-round. 10 • badgerherald.com • April 27, 2017

On some nights, local musicians can be heard playing on a small stage near the front of the restaurant as a long line of students begins to form waiting for the ever-delicious, customizable subs. The signature “Wreck” featuring salami, roast beef, turkey, ham with melted cheese topped with lettuce, tomato and mayo on your choice of bread offers an excellent cure for postlecture hunger or a Sunday morning hangover. Regardless of why you’re there, taking a trip to Potbelly assures you won’t come out hungry. While there are many possible reasons why

Potbelly was voted “best sandwich” in this year’s student choice awards, our bet is on the variety, speed and flavors that their subs offer. They’ve got everything a college student could want on a sub and they can get it to you hot, fresh and fast. Thinking about a classic turkey sub? You’re covered. What about a pizza sandwich? They’ve gotchu. Whether you’re there to catch up with a friend or grab a sub on the way to class, there’s no doubt UW students think Potbelly is your best bet for a sandwich on campus.

Best newcomer: Glaze Glaze Teriyaki, a restaurant chain started in New York City, arrived to Madison’s State Street late last summer. Since then, the establishment has graced Madison with Seattlestyle teriyaki, described on their website as a combination of Korean and Japanese flavors. Despite being a newcomer, Glaze has quickly become a State Street favorite. Glaze has become a popular location for teriyaki lovers and foodies alike, through its flavorful meals and inviting décor. Glaze’s interior is sleek, filled with plants, couches and a large amount of tables. No matter how long the line, the spacious environment is capable of holding

large crowds. It offers fresh, never frozen ingredients in all of their meals, with a focus on providing local produce when available. Glaze’s goal is to encourage healthy eating, without compromising bold flavors or breaking the bank. Glaze’s menu has a variety of combos, appetizers and side dishes. Their entrée plates come with a protein (chicken, steak, salmon, tofu or veggies), rice and salad. Glaze is reasonably priced, considering the amount of food and freshness of ingredients. This hotspot offers a variety of vegetarian and gluten free options, providing a haven for foodies with dietary restrictions. The restaurant is sure to have something perfect for everyone.

Best Student Services: UHS In a world where access to proper health care may be at stake, University Health Services shines as a beacon of hope and possibility for college students. Located in the heart of the Southeast neighborhood, the East Campus Mall clinic offers a variety of low to no cost services ranging from primary care to sexual wellness to mental health.

Despite financial restraints, UHS was still able expand its mental health staff and implement a campus-wide vaccination program for the first found of meningococcal disease.

Even though UHS is a great service to students, the only time many students take advantage of it is when they have runny noses or are trying to figure out if they truly are sick or just really hungover. But did you know this year’s best student service also provides massages at a low cost?

Along with working through financial perils, UHS also works to create a safe and welcoming environment for all. In all the appointments for the women’s health clinic, UHS notes “all

Best Coffeehouse: Colectivo If you’re looking for a coffeehouse that does more than keep you awake, Colectivo is the place for you. Though the restaurant’s neon signs and gray paint may seem too “hipster” to some, you will find yourself feeling immediately more productive and relaxed upon sitting on one of its inviting wooden chairs. The coffeehouse offers a variety of coffees and teas categorized by roast and origin and a plethora of other drinks including juices and smoothies for the caffeine-conscious. If you find it too difficult or don’t know what to choose, the friendly staff will help you pick the right one for you. They know how to get people addicted to more than just the coffee! Plus, this coffeehouse offers more than muffins and scones to satisfy your mid-study sesh munchies. Tuck into a spicy chorizo burrito or creamy avocado BLT, or go for a garden harvest and help save the planet. Pair all of this with an unbeatably chill atmosphere at its three locations in Madison and you have found yourself a new work/hangout/people watching spot. Colectivo opens its glass walls on a warm day so you can enjoy the breeze or provide refuge with a view on a cold, snowy one. It’s no wonder students have chosen Colectivo as the best coffeehouse because it really can do it all! Top: Katie Cooney Bottom: Sarah Godfrey The Badger Herald

Best Date Restaurant: Tutto Pasta Located at the corner of State Street and Johnson, Tutto Pasta takes its patrons beyond greasy pizza and mac ‘n’ cheese into a tasteful journey of comforting Italian classics. The family-run eatery offers three candlelit storeys of dining space that create an intimate environment for even its most hostile patrons. If you seek even more privacy, ask to sit in the basement area away from passersby prying eyes. You wouldn’t want anyone eyeing your food, I mean, date like that would you? Despite its large seating capacity, you wouldn’t be hard pressed to find a line of hungry patrons spilling out of the restaurant’s red and green awning onto state street. Tutto’s offers a 12 • badgerherald.com • April 27, 2017

wide range of antipasti, including their famous Melanzane Parmigiana, for you to break the ice or share with your boo. While you wait for your food, tuck into fresh, warm bread and icy drinks. The restaurant offers special cocktails and a booming wine list for those of age, as well as a number of other non-alcoholic drinks. The menu also organizes items in a way that can help even the pickiest of eaters find something they would enjoy. Whether you like red or white sauce pastas, classics like the Tutto Pasta and lasagna are sure to tickle your fancy. Plus their large portions make them shareable so you can have your own special Lady and the Tramp spaghetti moment.

Patrons watching their carbs and gluten can flip through Tutto’s healthy pasta options that compromise on fat but not on flavor. If you thought their wide-range of pastas, pizzas, paninis and more wasn’t enough, take a look at their dessert menu. In case your date isn’t going too sweetly, servers can bring you a tray showcasing sample sugary specials including their delectable tiramisu, chocolate cake and award-winning cannoli. Regardless of what you choose, Tutto’s warm, welcoming atmosphere and affordable fine dining will ensure you have a date that’s out of this world, or at least, Madison.

Best Entertainment: Majestic Despite being one of Madison’s oldest landmarks, the Majestic knows how to keep its entertainment fresh and current. Located at the corner of King Street and Doty, the 600-seat theatre often exceeds its capacity and for good reason. It hosts more than 40 artists every month performing a diverse range of music. While many internationally acclaimed artists like SOHN and Cashmere Cat have graced the venue, the Majestic focuses on shining a light on local artists. That’s what makes

the theatre a true Wisconsin classic. Though it’s close to the ever-lit state Capitol, the Majestic’s neon sign is hard to miss. Its red, gold-trimmed walls create an atmosphere that lives up to the royalty in its name. For some, the venue is not only a place of music but also one of celebration. You can hold events like weddings in the theatre as well. Its location in downtown also attracts hundreds of tourists. Let’s not forget that the Majestic hosts some of the most student-budget friendly

shows, bringing new artists and music to everyone’s lives. Overall, Majestic has certainly proved that it lives up to its name and strives to make every student feel like they deserve to be somewhere way better than a 600-seater lecture hall.

Best Fitness: Anytime Fitness Anytime Fitness of Madison offers the chance for your average Joe or elite pro to take their fitness to the next level. Are you a student looking for a great place to work out? Anytime Fitness offers a discounted student membership rate. Do you want fitness consulting, group workouts, or personal training? Anytime Fitness offers all three when you purchase a membership! With an array of

With a membership to Anytime Fitness you can utilize locations across the country with no additional cost, and they’re not lying when they say anytime. Anytime Fitness is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week taking away that all-too-familiar, “I don’t have time,”

Up until April 28, Madison’s location is offering free enrollment to any new members. So act fast! This gym is a true community that will work with you to help achieve your fitness goals no matter your age or experience.

Best Clothing Store: Urban Outfitters For being situated smack dab in the middle of a college campus full of broke students, the upscale clothes of Urban Outfitters seem to be pretty popular. Located at 528 State St., Nogginz is the first and last place you should consider for a haircut. Easy to access, consistent in service and welcoming of whatever haircut your friend picked out for you because you bet that the Falcons wouldn’t blow a 28-3 lead. It’s tough to find an atmosphere as conversational and friendly as you will at Nogginz, a place that runs anything from shampoo, styling, waxing, perms and five different kinds of highlights. Running $17 for a men’s haircut, $23 to

Best Hair Salon: Nogginz $26 for a women’s haircut and only $25 for whatever a Malibu Treatment waxing is, Nogginz is a relatively inexpensive way to get a great haircut every time. Most other places compromise a good haircut to charge even a few dollars less than this, but when you have to take pictures in front of “the bean” next weekend for a Chicago formal, a good haircut makes all the difference. One of the best parts about Nogginz is, despite the large crowds that rush there every weekend, they’re accommodating

of long lines and offer nice seats with a TV and outlets to make sure your snap game doesn’t suffer. Don’t think that you will spend much time in that chair, however, as the service is insanely quick and will get you through the process of attempting a bowl cut in record time. For the best name in haircuts throughout the greater area of Madison, you would be hard pressed to go anywhere but Nogginz.

Best Last Minute Booze Run: Riley’s Wines of the World Wisconsin loves to drink, and so do Badgers. Where’s the best place to shop for booze? Well, you answered, and Riley’s Wines of the World is the winner. This is no surprise — Riley’s is close, quick and offers a plethora of not only wines, but beers and boozes galore. Honestly, Riley’s is a wonderland filled with two floors of straight sauce, including an amazing selection of Burnett’s flavors that us Madisonian kids drool for. Forget about saving drinking festivities for the weekend — Riley’s is open 364 days a year (the 365th saved for Christmas). But wait, there’s something even better. They open at 8

a.m. on Badger Game Days, so we can start our drinking as early as possible (for better or for worse). Talk about dedication! Speaking of commitment, the employees at this liquor store are always nice and welcoming. They appear to be in a good mood, which makes the spirit of the place something you can look forward to, even if you’re there for only a few minutes. Not only are the employees generally in a good mood, they are also willing to help, which was experienced first hand by yours truly. On a busy Halloween night, a Riley’s employee delivered a keg to my humble abode, and

helped carry it up three flights of nasty stairs. It didn’t end there — once we got it safe and sound in the kitchen corner, they helped put it together. How nice! Overall, Riley’s is sure to never let you down. Whether shopping for craft beers, single malt scotch or Hamm’s on sale, this place is bound to have it. If they don’t, though, their website says they take requests for special orders and will make the utmost effort to get them to you within the week. What more could we ask for?
