Best entertainment: Orpheum Located right by the Capitol, the Orpheum is the ideal place to see a show after grabbing a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants on State Street or Capitol Square. The venue has a unique and storied history and often boasts some the most star-studded schedules of any venue in Madison, such as Bill Maher, Joe Biden and the B-52’s. In addition to hosting some of the biggest names in entertainment, the Orpheum strives to create a welcoming and safe atmosphere for all guests. If you’re feeling amped up, there’s plenty of space to dance or mosh, but if you’re in the mood to sit back and relax the venue offers two floors of seating. Next time you’re looking for something to do on the weekend, check out the Orpheum event page and grab some tickets for you and your friends — we promise you won’t regret it.
Best Hair salon: Aveda institue
Through the ever-increasing stress of study, exams, extracurriculars and parties, it’s seems like a real shocker that college is supposed to be a time to let your hair down and have fun, especially when it’s so easy to throw your hair up in a quick, messy bun and run to class. But when you want to literally let your hair down and decide not to look like you rolled out of a dumpster after a week of consecutive all-nighters, students flock to the Aveda Institute for a new look that doesn’t break the bank, but looks like it does. Whether you’re there for a quick trim, a new cut or want to dye your hair each and every color of the rainbow, the students at Aveda Institute provide multiple services with a fun and comfortable atmosphere that keeps UW students coming back time and time again.
Best student sdervices: UHS
Best way to get around campus: Madison Metro Bus
UHS is the only student service on campus that you can trust to save your life. When you’re a college student, and your immune system is constantly inundated with the germs of your peers, your onestop-shop for healthy living is just a SAC elevator ride away. Thankfully, UHS has been getting its fair share of well-deserved recognition — just this year it was ranked the number one college health service in the nation, for the second time, by The Princeton Review. Students can expect service as prompt as it is high-quality, and in the face of criticism related to mental health services, there is no denying UHS has gone out of it’s way to address concerns and implement reforms. Keeping a campus this vast healthy is no easy task, but UHS’s integrated care model serves thousands of students every year, and for that it takes its rightful place as the best student service.
The Metro system is the only reason I have ever gone to any of my lectures at Agricultural Hall. The 80 is convenient, requires no bus pass and gives you an opportunity to relax and take in the views of campus on your way to class. Also, a Madison Metro Bus pass is available from the Student Activities Center on East Campus Mall paid for by Student Segregated Fees. This gives students easy access to parts of Madison that would otherwise only be available by car. This includes popular destinations like the East and West side malls, various grocery stores and Target which can be an enormous asset for students looking for cheaper food and appliance options than stores downtown. On top of that, access to many of these bus routes is readily available for students with multiple stops right on University. April 26, 2018 • badgerherald.com •3

Best Trivia night: Chasers
Many know Chasers to be a destination with a lot of energy and good spirits on game days, but come Tuesday night, it is the place to be for trivia. The bar and grill, located off Gorham Street, welcomes all to participate in their weekly trivia competitions. In addition to this event, the bar advocates for their “select appetizer special” starting at $5 each, as well as featured pitchers at $7. Another common draw for Chasers is the outdoor patio. Walking by the venue on any afternoon with the temperature above 60 degrees, there will most likely be a horde gathered outside and enjoying the weather, as well as the drinks and food from the bar. With deals and an atmosphere like this, it is no wonder Chasers won the Student Choice Award for “Best Trivia Night” — this is a go-to for Tuesday night partiers.

Best date restaurant: Tutto Pasta
best mexican restaurant: Los gamelos
Met a special someone on Tinder — I mean in your bio lecture — and need a place to take them out for dinner? Look no further than Tutto’s Pasta. Tutto’s has demanded its place as Madison’s favorite date restaurant for years, and you’d be hard pressed to find a table without a long wait time any Friday or Saturday night. But it’s well worth the wait. Both levels provide seating for everything from the intimate anniversary meal, to a congrats dinner for a friend, to a night out on Parents Weekend. And the free bread and delicious wine doesn’t hurt. Don’t worry, gluten-sensitive folks, they serve gluten free pasta and plenty of other options including salads, soups, Italiano entrees and paninis. But if you do order pasta, anything from a simple penne ala vodka to a more exciting Spaghetti Al Frutti Di Mare will leave you licking your plate clean and your date will definitely have a great experience, even if she’s just not that into you.
CAREERS
Taco Bell may have briefly taken over the Mexican food scene on State Street (if you can even call what they serve real Mexican food, or even food at all) but if you want cheap Mexican eats and an establishment with a liquor license all in one stop, Los Gemelos is the better choice by far. Many say Los Gemelos is the best joint for authentic Mexican food on campus, and you can tell just by walking through the door. Upon entering, you’re bombarded by the delicious smell of freshly made corn tortillas — a smell that may linger for a while, so you might not want to go there in your favorite clothes. Or do — if your girl doesn’t love authentic Mexican food, she shouldn’t be your girl to begin with. If you change her mind, treat her to Los Gemelos’ $2.25 tacos and the variety of homemade salsas served on the side. Wisconsin may not be known for its Mexican food, but Los Gemelos sure hits the spot.

Best Burger: Dotty’s Dumpling Dowry For years, the great debate over Madison’s best burger has raged as violently as the waves of Lake Mendota — but no more. Dotty’s Dumpling Dowry, nestled in the thick of the southeast neighborhood of campus is the perfect burger binge, offering a variety of different takes on the American classic. Whether you’re in the mood for something deliciously cheesy, spicy, greasy or unique, Dotty’s has it all. And for you vegetarians and vegans out there, don’t worry. Dotty’s even has vegetarian and vegan burgers that won’t make you miss the meat. Overall, Dotty’s is the cure for a hangover after a rough night out, a fairly-priced lunch with friends and a Madison staple, with options even the pickiest of Badgers can enjoy.
Best Hangover food: Shortstack Shortstack undoubtedly takes the pancake for the best hangover cure. The blueberry pancakes and cheesy breakfast potatoes are almost sure to soak up last night’s mistakes, while the blind special caters to the frugal risk-taker. The colder-than-you’ve-ever-been-in-yourentire-life-hour-long-outside-wait serves as the perfect setting for the debrief of the night’s events. The campus took a hit this year when Shortstack cut back their Thursday and Friday night hours, but their all-nighter on Saturday night also makes it a good bet for some late night, post-bar food. And in the morning, if the coffee doesn’t serve as a good enough pick-me-up, Shortstack’s hair of the dog can assuage your headache, so you can stop focusing on how terrible you feel physically, and start focusing on how many times you texted your ex last night. They even have a cool collection of décor, in case you have time to observe it in between shoveling piles of grease down your gullet.

Best sandwich: Potbelly Ain’t no party like a Potbelly party ‘cause a Potbelly party has really good hot peppers! Whether you go for the chicken, turkey or that pizza thing they advertise, there is really only one thing you must keep in mind when visiting this fine establishment: the hot peppers make their sandwiches a cut above. With fair pricing for a State Street location, Potbelly’s is the best sandwich option on campus. Service is prompt and staff are always friendly. On top of that, their quality far surpasses that of competing sandwich stores in the area like Subway despite falling behind the chain in number of locations. And if you need something sweet to wash down your meal with, Potbelly’s also has one of the best milkshakes in Madison. The next time you’re looking for a delicious meal after a tough day of work or classes, you can’t miss with Potbelly’s!
Best Place to cure your sweet tooth: Greenbush
I’ve had my cases of cavities over the years (it’s hereditary), but still my sweet tooth persists. The best way to satiate this craving is to sink your teeth into a warm, luscious, delectable cake donut. And aside from their sugary delicious glory, these donuts are only a dollar. Yes, I repeat: These Donuts Are a Single Dollar. Oh, and they’re completely Kosher. If there are qualities donuts must have to officially join the category of “Donut Excellence,” Greenbush would check off all boxes.

Best Coffeehouse: Colectivo Situated just at the corner of State Street and North Frances Street, Colectivo not only offers a great place to relax at a prime location, but it also provides delicious coffee
drinks as well as breakfast foods, sandwiches, soups and a nice display of baked goods. They even sell kombucha now. I know, please try to contain your inner hipster as their pretty latte and scone might inspire you to listen to alternative rock while you
write out poems in your journal, even though you should be doing your organic chemistry practice exams. Their State Street location also offers a relaxing space with ample natural light, garage style windows and a spacious patio for those wishing to soak up the sun while studying.

Best sports bar: State Street Brats There’s a reason that when Mark Zuckerberg came to town, he went to State Street Brats. Any outing involving sports, sports watching, brats or brats-eating in Madison is incomplete without visiting State Street Brats. Featuring drink specials that defy economic conventions, a plethora of television screens indoors and out and oodles of munchies, State Street Brats has the range for whichever athletic competition is your fancy. And then there’s the brats. There’s red ones and white ones, ones wrapped in cheddar and and even ones topped with a burger. Perhaps, the best part of Brats is that they offer a plan for celebration if your team wins and a contingency plan if they lose. Revel with a life-size glass boot of beer if your team wins or drown yourself in one if they lose.

Best Late night food + Favorite Pizza JoinT: Ian’s When it comes to late night pizza in Madison, Ian’s pizza takes the cake. Known for their delicious mac-n-cheese pizza Ian’s also offers a diverse menu of pizza toppings that required a bit more recipe creativity to create a perfect blend of flavors on your tastebuds. On top of stellar pizza, you can expect quality customer service and an inviting atmosphere, especially at the State Street location which has various activities such as open mic night throughout the week. They also offer alternatives such as salads that are pretty great if you cannot eat bread, or breadsticks with dipping sauce for those that do not want to commit to a full slice of pizza. Long story short, Ian’s has something for everyone, regardless of dietary needs. Even at 2:00 a.m. when the lines can be out the door, the staff is usually exceptionally efficient and accommodating, even if you’re six Long Island Iced Teas deep.

Best Fitness: Anytime Fitness After reconstruction on the SERF began fall 2017, University of Wisconsin students had to find alternatives to working out at the campus gym. Located just down the block, right above Walgreens on East Campus Mall, Anytime Fitness quickly became a favorite. Living up to its name, the facility is open 24/7 for members, allowing students to sneak in a run or a lift at any point of the day during the week. Trying to get a late workout in after studying all day or waking up extra early to get a workout in before a day of classes isn’t a problem. Going home for the weekend? Not an issue either. Google Maps the closest Anytime Fitness in your area and enjoy the benefits of being able to access any of the facilities around the country. The facility at East Campus Mall offers a wide range of machines and work areas, with full cardio, weight-lifting and aerobics sections. Members can also enjoy a free personal training session as well discounted prices on group and team training sessions. Ready to work out those New Year resolutions? Stop by Anytime Fitness, anytime.
Best Last Minute Booze Run: Riley’s
The clock is ticking. It’s 8:40 p.m. on Friday night and you and your roommates decide last minute that you will be hosting tonight’s pregame. After opening the fridge and freezer, you are all met with horror as you realize you have no booze to provide for your guests. You quickly dart out of your apartment, run down State Street and turn the corner of Gorham Street to the two-storied Riley’s Wines of the World to make a last minute selection. Walking in, you are greeted by aisle after aisle of wine from all over world — white, red, pink and slightly purplish. The friendly staff are eager to help you make a selection and answer any questions you may have. The sides of the stores are lined with an impressive collection of hard liquors that are sure to satisfy all your friend’s preferences. Best of all, Riley’s offers the ability to budget for Burnett’s or splurge on Grey Goose.

Best Landlord/Property Madison Propertty Management
Best Clothing Store: Ragstock
Madison Property Management boasts rentals all across the isthmus, with units on and off UW campus providing housing to students every year. Some of their more notable, vast properties include Equinox and Vantage Point, but with 3,500 residential rentals in the city, there is plenty of variety for prospective tenants who may not prefer large apartment complexes. Considering how expensive housing can get in Madison, MPM offers very fair pricing and even helps advertise sublets on their website.
Ragstock should be considered the unsung hero of college students everywhere, but especially at the University of Wisconsin. Located conveniently on State Street, it’s one of the only clothing stores in walking distance of campus that offers stylish, eclectic clothing for a reasonable price. Where else would we find outfits for every possible theme party under the sun, from a Hawaiian Luau and ‘80s night? Most importantly, what would we do on Halloween?
With a simple electronic rent payment system and friendly, accessible customer service staff, MPM proves housing doesn’t have to be the gargantuan stressor looming over students and Madison residents that most of us anticipate encountering. Units are found in great condition and in the event of emergencies or broken stoves, heating units or locks, the maintenance crew is sure to be timely and kind. On top of that, MPM provides its tenants with a variety of extra benefits, like free bagels on Rent Day at Equinox, showing that it really is the little things that matter most.
Ragstock comes through no matter how much you put off searching for that perfect ugly Christmas sweater, and will undoubtedly surprise you with an unparalleled selection of trendy jean jackets at a reasonable price point. All Whether you need metallic hot pants for a night out, or recycled flannels that will keep you stylish during fall and all three seasons of winter, Ragstock offers the versatility, convenience and affordability that keeps UW students coming back for more as soon as they collect their paycheck.

Best newcomer: Taco Belll Though we are all briefly mourned the loss of Wendy’s on State Street, Taco Bell Cantina has done well filling the void. No longer are Baja Blasts and Doritos Locos tacos a bus ride away as the popular fast food chain is situated in one of the most convenient locations on campus near the corner of State and Gilman Street. While the new Taco Bell is a great addition to fast food options on campus, one of the only negatives in this establishment is that their closing hours of 11 p.m. leave us wanting more but that decision is likely up to corporate. Also, the city of Madison has yet to grant Taco Bell Cantina their liquor license which means that refreshment options at the establishment are currently limited. But a recent lawsuit by Taco Bell against the city of Madison could let us get some tequila in our Baja Blasts sooner rather than later.

If you’re looking for a bar with good food and drinks near the Capitol, look no further than Lucille. Their selection of cocktails and beer is top-notch — just be careful to limit yourself so you don’t break the bank. If you’re feeling simple, choose a classic Moscow Mule, but if you’re feeling daring, feel free to venture out and try some of their more creative drinks — such as the Painkiller or The Devil’s Hand — you won’t be disappointed. As for the pizza, Lucille offers what you won’t find anywhere on State, trading playful, late-night toppings like mac & cheese for high quality ingredients paired in creative ways that that you can get your parents or S.O. to pay for.
