Lake Mendota

Welcome to the Neighborhood by Audrey Piehl ArsEtc. Writer

When deciding where to live in Madison, the options can be overwhelming for University of Wisconsin students. Fortunately every neighborhood — or even street — carries its own distinct air. This map provides a breakdown of the aesthetic of every neighborhood, plus nearby bus routes and places to get food and drinks. Union South

Camp Randall Breese/Randall Vibes: There is nothing quite like the area surrounding Camp Randall, particularly in the fall as hordes of red-and-white swarm around kegs in anticipation for a Badger football game. Living in arguably the heart of one of college’s best gameday towns may be a tough sell for humanities majors — a far walk from the east side — but its proximity to Trader Joe’s is another story. Food/Drink: QQ’s, Mickie’s Dairy Bar Nearby bus routes: 3, 6, 58, 80, 82

South/Regent Vibes: Home of the affectionately termed “sophomore slums,” this Badger-friendly realm may lack immediate character, but excels as the center of everything. Students may not see anyone but Millennials for an entire academic year in this Badger hovel, but the shenanigans can make good stories for the grandkids. Food/Drink: Greenbush Bakery, Indie Coffee Nearby bus routes: 4, 6, 13, 27, 44, 48, 80

NEIGHBORHOODS

Mansion Hill/Gilman Langdon

Vibes: Tucked away in a historical neighborhood where the houses often hail from the 1800s, this under-appreciated corner has it all just minutes away: the ever-partying Langdon Street — and quick fairway to campus — on the street over; Lake Mendota and its glorious sunsets; State Street easily accessible, but just distanced enough that its constant bustle won’t disturb any light sleepers; and lastly, beautiful older architecture.

Vibes: Eclectic estates housing UW’s Greek life and offering some of Madison’s best architecture, particularly as the fall sleeves cover sidewalks. Other than clogged sidewalks on weekends and rush week, it’s a pleasant winding strip close to campus and Lake Mendota. Food/Drink: Mainly anything on State Street, but make sure to get yourself a late night sandwich at MacTaggarts Market

Food/Drink: Los Gemelos, The Plaza Tavern, Tres Amigos

Nearby bus routes: 81, 82

Nearby bus routes: 4, 6, 10, 28, 81

State Capitol State Street Vibes: Though some worry the historic street is becoming a “food court,” it still exhibits plenty of charm and offerings for students craving a truly bustling downtown atmosphere. From luxury apartments like the Hub to less pricey options, living in Madison’s downtown metropolis can be accessible for any budget.

Kohl Center

Food/Drink: INFINITE, but local favorites are State Street Brats, Collectivo, Ian’s Pizza, Five Guys, Chipotle, Kabul, Short Stack Nearby bus routes: 2, 3, 4, 6, 12, 14, 15, 29, 58, 70, 71, 72

Mifflin Bassett Vibes: Perpendicular to main drag Washington Avenue and tucked between campus and Lake Monona, Bassett offers a welcome divergence from the collegiate atmosphere. While a bit farther away from campus, the brisk walk can be a welcome jaunt after a long day of power lectures. Food/Drink: Bassett Street Brunch Club, Maharani Indian Restaurant

Vibes: As the annual Mifflin Block Party officially makes its comeback, the animal houses of this infamous street are also bumpin’ with their fair share of trap queens and solo cups. But, other than its rowdy reputation, it can serve as a great home for extroverted or introverted Badgers. Food/Drink: Cento, Cap Centre, your neighbor’s party Nearby bus routes: 82

Nearby bus routes: 1, 5, 10, 19, 27, 38, 47, 75, 82

New parking ordinance to restrict moped accessibility As students remain hesitant to comply with parking fines, city officials expect decline in moped use by Avery Aurand City Editor

Madison City Council passed an ordinance in early August tightening moped regulations to create more public walking space on campus and downtown. Currently, mopeds carry the same set of rules as bicycles. Riders can park the vehicles at bike racks and on sidewalks as long as they do not obstruct walkways, said Sabrina Tolley, the city’s assistant parking utility manager. Starting Jan. 1, 2018, mopeds will be categorized as motorcycles and can no longer be parked on public sidewalks or terraces, Ald. Zach Wood, District 8 said. Those who violate the ordinance will be issued a $60 fine. But, Wood said there will be “a number of benefits” all over Madison.

10 • badgerherald.com • September 29, 2016

“The sidewalks will be more open, which will be safer, and there will be less pollution,” Wood said. “Plus, it will be easier to park a bicycle.” After the ordinance goes into effect, mopeds will be allowed to park in any legal on-street parking space, Tolley said. At these metered spaces, up to three mopeds can park in a single standard auto stall. A standard auto stall charges $2.00 per hour, but spaces specifically designed for mopeds have an hourly rate of $1.00, Tolley said. Currently, there are ten moped/motorcycleonly spots, Tolley said. To compensate for the ordinance, the City of Madison plans to add fourteen new spaces — all of which should be completed by the end of the summer. In addition to street parking spots, there will be designated moped spaces in all of the city-owned parking garages, Tolley said. The University of

Wisconsin will also has the capacity to increase the number of moped parking spaces on campus if there is an increased demand. “I wouldn’t be surprised if moped usage would decrease, however we can be responsive to demands,” Wood said. Property owners in certain zoning districts can apply to establish moped parking areas on the terrace, the space between the sidewalk and the curb or on their property, Tolley said. These areas would be specifically marked, and the property owner’s responsibility. Residents would also be eligible to purchase a residential parking permit for their moped, Tolley said. UW sophomore Sara Zimmerman has owned a moped for a year on campus, but is now reconsidering her usage of the vehicle upon hearing the new legislation.

Five Downtown Restaurants to Live Above Living above any one of these eateries is sure to spice up everyday life

Ian’s Pizza Everyone remembers they’re first slice of Ian’s mac and cheese pizza, whether it was with their parents or guardians, or blacked out after a drinking too much at a freshman party. Ok, scratch that, not everyone remembers their first slice of Ian’s pizza. But what people might not remember about Ian’s is they are so much more than just mac and cheese slices. They also offer gourmet slices that rotate on a monthly basis, such as an Eggplant Parm slice that tastes just like someone’s, not my, grandma used to make. Plus, from the exterior the pad on top of Ian’s on Frances St. looks like a really sweet suite.

Espresso Royale

Morgan Grunow The Badger Herald 12 • badgerherald.com • September 28, 2017

Espresso Royale, located in two separate locations on State Street, is the perfect alternative to the routine Starbucks run. You may be looking to crank out a paper, meet a friend to study or catch up on some pleasure reading. Either way, this café is the place to be. Not only does it open early for those desperate to fulfill their caffeine needs, but it stays open until midnight for those willing to slam an espresso shot to pull the necessary all-nighter. While the café is a chain, its environment will transport you to your local coffee shop at home. It may not have two stories like Colectivo or Starbucks, but the intimacy within makes you feel welcome. With a friendly and efficient staff, you feel inclined to return after the first trip.

Colectivo & Glaze

Jonah Leurquin The Badger Herald

Aside from having seemingly every amenity possible (an infinity pool, c’mon) those who live at The Hub also enjoy living above many kinds of restaurants. Colectivo offers great coffee in the cutest little cups, and also offers the perfectly aestheticized space for studying. Glaze Teriyaki, on the other hand, offers a gourmet fast-casual version of asian-inspired cuisines. This isn’t even to mention the new Salad’s Up restaurant opening soon as well.

Dough Baby Opening up just last year on the 500 block of State Street, Dough Baby offers a variety of delicious items sure to satisfy any sweet tooth. The bakery — run by girl (power) trio Kristine Miller, Kathryn Gullickson and Hannah Ancona —uses only organic and local ingredient, baking fresh items every day. From donuts and cookie sandwiches to pies, mini cakes, bars, brownies and more, this shop offers yummy pastries at an afforable price.
