WHY DANCE?
DANCE AND YOGA CENTER •
Dance(folk dances) is a very important part of the Turkish Cypriots culture as it provides unity and identity.
•
EMU has a very culturally diverse community. Dance will give a chance to the students and community to share; teach and learn each other's culture through dance.
•
This activity is also inspired by the cultural and dance activities by the students and dance communities. Hence, a dance center will provide a good environment for practices.
•
Hip-hop dance is a trend in this generation. It has the interest of kids and young adults alike.
RESEARCH ON THEME
WHY YOGA? •
Yoga is a good activity to calm both body and mind. For university students and instructors that are work loaded and stressed. It would be a perfect fit as they would be able to relax and regenerate.
•
It is an activity that people of various age groups can participate in thus encouraging interaction among the different age groups.
Yoga is a systematic practice of physical exercise, breath control, relaxation, diet control, and positive thinking and meditation aimed at developing harmony in the body, mind, and environment. Both yoga and dance activities involve movement and require space free of furniture. These space are called studio spaces.
Dance performance during African cultural night

Features Floor length mirrors covering at least one wall Well lit with natural and/or artificial lighting Have little or no extra furniture Spacious The floors are slip resistant to support most dance styles for example Marley dance flooring Soundproof space
The users of this center will be • University students • Instructors • Other campus residents • Members of the community, among others. Majority of the users are expected to be young adults, adults, teenagers and older children. The users of these activity spaces will require other spaces to support their activity, like changing rooms and toilets. Since the activity is in a center, other spaces will be needed for organization like a reception, waiting area and office. Social spaces like a café and performance area will have to be considered along with their supporting spaces.
Sprung dance floor board
The enclosure of the space depends on the number of openings in the space and the nature of the openings depends on the designer.
YOGA STUDIO The spaces do not have to be entirely enclosed. They can be semi open or have many openings with a good view. EMU FACULTY OF ARCHITECTUE Spring Academic Semester 2020-21 FARC102-02 Introductory Design Studio Thematic Activity Center at EMU Campus
Equipment needed • Yoga mats • Meditation cushions • Blankets • Sound system etc.
This space should have some natural lighting Can have storage spaces within the room • •
These are open spaces usually made warm and welcoming to set the right mood for the activity. They have smooth floors and do not need much furniture
Can have plants added within the space to give more feel of nature

TOPOGRAPHY. The topography of the plot, with a slight dip to the south, favors the construction of a basement which houses the building facilities and storage area that serves the dance halls through an elevator.
The dance studios are big free spaces to allow a lot of free movement. The only furniture are the few movable benches and chairs.

Glass box
The building is one only one floor. It is made up of two volumes of different volumetric dimensions connected by three glass boxes. Two of these boxes connect the changing rooms directly to the dance studios. The third one which is of bigger dimension connects to a distributor/transition space that leads to all the three studios
The oxidized steel latticework protect the rooms from the exterior and control the amount of light entering them. They also create a beautiful effect on the inside.

POST AND BEAM STRUCTURE STEEL FRAME STRUCTURE
STRUCTURE RESEARCH • The structure is made up of a concrete skeleton. The vertical members are called columns and the horizontal ones are beams. Concrete slabs resting on top of the beams supported by the columns make the platforms which people stand on.
• For normal structures 5m distance between reinforced construction columns is appropriate. The maximum distance should be 7.5mand minimum 2.5m. TEXT REFERENCE; https://theconstructor.org/building/factors-controlling-distance-rcccolumns/219446/
EMU FACULTY OF ARCHITECTUE Spring Academic Semester 2020-21 FARC102-02 Introductory Design Studio Thematic Activity Center at EMU Campus
IN DESIGN PROPOSAL This structure will be used for the functions that are on the ground and are especially suitable for the volumes that have a story above them. WHY? • This structure is strong enough to support more than one story. • It is suitable for the simple rectangular prism volumes in the design proposal.
A frame work of steel makes-up this structure. It is a light weight structure. The frame can be adapted to suit the shape and size of the building design. IN DESIGN PROPOSAL This structure will be used for the volumes above the ground in the design proposal. WHY? • It is more light in weight • It is flexible can easily be adapted to suit the geometry in my design. https://livingasean.com/house/concrete-steel-combination-modern-house/ https://www.quora.com/Whats-the-difference-between-secondary-beamand-main-beam-reinforcement-details

SYNTHESIS ORIENTATION • The public spaces [Café and Exhibition]are facing the Salamis road .This allows them to be a point of attraction to visitors. • The courtyard created provides spaces or a sculpture garden and outdoor seating and picnic areas. ACCESS • The creation of new walkways for pedestrians allows for access by students from EMU as well as visitors from the main Salamis road.
SYNTHESIS AND SWOT ANALYSIS
SUN PATH • The longer side of the building is oriented North to South therefore more openings are allowed. • The shorter side of the building is orientated East to West with minimum windows shaded by the trees to shield against the direct sunlight. WIND PATH • The spaces facing the east and west will benefit from the sea breeze and prevailing winds. TOPOGRAPHY • The change in levels of the site allows for proposed accommodation and workshops on the highest level to experience the sea view.
EMU FACULTY OF ARCHITECTUE Spring Academic Semester 2020-21 FARC102-05 Introductory Design Studio Thematic Activity Center at EMU Campus
VEGETATION The trees on site provide shade from direct sunlight for the spaces orientated towards the East and West. They also offer good views
SWOT ANALYSIS STRENGTHS • Topography provides proper drainage of water. • The site benefits from the Sea breeze especially during summertime • The presence of trees provide shade . • There's easy access to site from Salamis road and EMU Campus • There’s a view of the sea from site. • The walkways accommodate pedestrian movements. WEAKNESS • There's noise pollution from the Seckin Market and the main road. • The rocky areas on site makes construction expensive.
OPPORTUNITY • The site allows for more spaces to be used as picnic, sculpture garden and relaxing areas. • The site can pose as an attraction to people from the Chapel and Market. • Improving walkway finishes on site THREATS • Insufficient parking space for the visitors . • Cutting of trees during construction. • Littering by the visitors.

The concept was inspired by the views of the sea and vegetation. I therefore organized the spaces so that the public spaces with high human traffic [café, exhibition, workshop] have a view and interaction with the greenery with the creation of courtyards. To take advantage of the sea view and topography, the accommodation and workshops are on the first-floor level .

PAINTING OF ACTIVITY CENTER THEMES ENABLE STUDENTS TO UNDERSTAND THAT CERTAIN TOPICS ARE NOT WHOLLY OBSCURE AND CAN BE AS RELEVANT TODAY AS THEY WERE TWO HUNDRED YEARS AGO. THE REASONS I CHOSE THIS THEME: • THE CONSTRUCTION SITE IS CLOSE TO THE UNIVERSITY • YOUNG GENERATION IN THE COUNTRY • PEOPLE WHO ARE ATTACHED TO THEIR ANCIENT CULTURE • THE FACT THAT EMOTION CHANGES ARE QUIETLY CONVEYED • PSYCHOLOGICAL HELP IN ITSELF RESEARCH ON THEME
• HARMONY OF ACTIVITY AND ENVIRONMENT • SOCIETY WHOSE TALENTS ARE HIDDEN
EMU FACULTY OF ARCHITECTUE Spring Academic Semester 2020-21 FARC102-05 Introductory Design Studio Thematic Activity Center at EMU Campus
2
PAINTING OF ACTIVITY CENTER REQUIRED FIELDS SHOULD BE MADE CONSIDERING THE NEEDS OF THE USERS. FOR EXAMPLE, CAFES AND SHOPS FOR SOCIAL AREAS ; THE RECEPTION, A WAITING ROOM AND AN OFFICE FOR THE ORGANIZATION OF THE CENTER ; AND A STORAGE FOR THE NEEDS OF THOSE USING THE WORKSHOPS.
SCENARIO
MY GOALS FOR THE CENTRE • EMU FACULTY OF ARCHITECTUE Spring Academic Semester 2020-21 FARC102-05 Introductory Design Studio Thematic Activity Center at EMU Campus
WHILE THE SERENITY OF THE GREEN VIEW OF THE ENVIRONMENT AND • THE BLUE OF THE SKY WILL INSPIRE PEOPLE TO PAINT, IT WILL BECOME A CENTER THAT WILL ENABLE PEOPLE OF ALL AGES TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES AS THEY WISH. BESIDES BEING A POPULAR DESTINATION AND A PLACE WHERE PEOPLE CAN RACE THEIR TALENTS, IT WILL BE ALWAYS ACTIVE AND ENJOY.
SOME OF THE BEST PAINTINGS OF EACH SEASON WILL BE DRAWN AND COLORED ON THE WALLS OF THE ACTIVITY CENTER OR HOME AND WORKPLACE (INDOORS OR OUTDOORS). IN THIS WAY, PEOPLE'S TALENTS WILL BE REFLECTED IN THE CENTER, OUTSIDE, STREETS, HOUSES OR OFFICES. WITH THIS METHOD, AN IDEA WILL DEVELOP THAT WILL ENABLE THEM TO BE JOYFUL, COLORFUL AND THOUGHTPROVOKING SPACES WHEREVER AND WHENEVER ANYONE CAN MEET.

SCENARIO
SCENARIO
In my Collider Activity Center I am providing people with both physical and mental activities. Whether by talking about meditation rooms and Whittlings areas for stress relief and connection with nature or also rope parks and nutritionist offices to stay connected with your physical health. I think this is very important because both mental and physical health are very important to define ones overall quality of life
This is a place that is designed to make students go throw a new way of thinking and getting introduced to the fact that we do not stand apart from nature and that we need to get rid of the influence of social media on our lives. This is to be seen in how buildings blend into the surrounding environment. Users: - Undefined Gender - Teenagers and adults (could work for children) - Students of emu - Citizens and tourists

I began with the simple concept of a formed assembly in order to position the purpose according to usability.
1 2
I attempted to control the building's orientation in relation to the topography and surroundings, as well as to capture a clear view of the city.
PROCESS DESIGN
3
It was all set to go. I inserted the building's windows and doors, as well as the paths that led to it.

5
I was experimenting with different types of structures and changing the location/layout of the accommodation.
This is the project's conclusion. I picked a tares framework to support the structure, and it is now complete with completed facades. 15
