BWF President’s Message: TotalEnergies BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals 2020

It was with reluctance that we had to postpone a number of tournaments last year – including the TotalEnergies BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals, first scheduled to be held in May and then October of 2020 in Aarhus, Denmark. The circumstances back then warranted those decisions, but we are now delighted to be in a position that these time-honoured championships will finally take their place on this adjusted calendar.

We have taken great heart from the successful organisation of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, and despite the many challenges in the lead-up – plus the sheer number of participants – the Olympics saw high-level sports conducted immaculately under the necessary safety protocols.

We have also learnt from the number of badminton tournaments held under COVID-19 conditions, and have subsequently gained great experience and confidence to be able to provide the perfect setting for the upcoming TotalEnergies BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals.

This will be another huge step forward for BWF, Badminton Danmark, and all our affiliates as we work towards getting the circuit back on track.

As always with this tournament steeped in history and tradition, I expect an enthralling contest because these are the trophies every team wants to win. It has been a while since the last team competition, and players will be keen to win glory in a format where the team matters more than the individual.

I would also like to express my appreciation and gratitude to title sponsors TotalEnergies as well as HSBC, Yonex, GoDaddy, Moutai, and 188BET, for being with us in our drive to keep the flame of badminton burning bright. A special thanks to the City of Aarhus, Badminton Danmark, and to the untiring efforts of officials, support staff and volunteers.
