A GREAT WELCOME TO DANISA DENMARK OPEN 2017 PRESENTED BY VICTOR Most Danish people know that the great Danish fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen was born in Odense. At this time every year Badminton Denmark runs this tournament in Odense and we feel that we are making a fairytale: A tournament where the best players/pairs in the world in all five categories are participating. No other sport can do that in Denmark. But we can only do this because we have: • A very fine support from our two main sponsors Danisa and VICTOR. For the 11th time, Odense hosts this Denmark Open tournament, and we are proud when our city and sporting facilities like Odense Idrætspark are chosen to form the framework of international sports event like this. I would like to thank both Badminton Denmark, the Badminton World Federation and all the volunteers who made this sporting event possible. Denmark Open recently entered a partnership with the sports brand VICTOR who is now the main sponsor for the Danish National Team and for Denmark Open the following four years. Even though you might think so, the name VICTOR is not a reference to our local badminton hero and now world champion Viktor Axelsen, who defeated China’s legendary Lin Dan in August. Viktor Axelsen, winner of the men’s singles title at the recent TOTAL BWF World Championships in Glasgow, grew up in Odense and owes a lot of his success to this picturesque and badminton-friendly city. His achievements are a reminder to all of us of how hosting elite events can positively impact a community. Denmark Open is one of the oldest badminton tournaments in the world and the greats of every era have competed at this event. Over the last decade, Odense has embraced the Denmark Open and welcomes visiting players and officials from all over the world. By showcasing local culture and literary icons like fairytale writer, Hans Christian Andersen, Odense has built a unique identity around the event.

JOIN US BEHIND THE SCENES OF AXELSEN’S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS VICTORY On August 27 this year, Viktor Axelsen gained a place in the Danish history books as he won the men’s singles at the World Championships. The first Dane to win the title in 20 years. Let us go two months back in time to have a chat with two of the persons who were closest to Axelsen in the 24 hours leading up to the victory – physiotherapist Michael Riis and the Danish national coach Kenneth Jonassen. He turns around with a look of almost disbelief on his face. It’s as if the reality is having a hard time sinking in. But the reality is that Viktor Axelsen has just become world champion. He has beaten the legendary Lin Dan in two sets and, in a short time after, he will step up onto the top step on the podium. But what was it that led to this victory? What steps were taken to ensure he was as physically strong as possible? And what tactics were used?

Viktor and I know each other really well, and if there is any kind of problem, then he comes to me. He had

some small issues with his foot and lower back in the run-up to the World Championships, so we looked at these after the semi-final. If there are small things that are bothering a player, then these can start to affect them mentally and lead to frustration, so we did a check-up of his whole body and made sure that he was completely rested. It’s important that he feels comfortable with the treatments I make, and we make all our decisions together. We do it as a team. I was in no doubt that he was physically ready for the final. Although, he was naturally quite tired. I think we succeeded in achieving a relaxed atmosphere and a good mood, and things did not get too intense even though it was the World Championships final the next day. On the day of the final we ate breakfast together and he had some treatment from me in the morning,

when I taped up his heel and toes, and then we loosened his back and his arch. Then we did a complete check of his entire body so I could see if there were any locked joints. Then we went out into the hall, where I continued to work on him. He felt that one of his thighs was a little tired, so I taped that up, and during the warm-up for the final he felt that the ache was completely gone. It was wonderful that we managed to get what could have become a small, niggling frustration to disappear. There was excellent communication between us throughout the process, and this helped to ensure that he was as focused as he could possibly be. I sat behind him on the tribunes during the match. I was in close contact with the coaches, and kept my eyes on how they communicated with each other. I was constantly ready to run down with my bag if I needed to. There was a situation where the tournament doctor put a patch on Viktor’s knee, and this made me frustrated, because he can’t play with a patch. At that point, I just felt like running down there and rubbing some vaseline on the wound. But Viktor was incredibly strong mentally that day, and it didn’t appear to bother him. I was very impressed by Viktor, and I think that his development over the past year has been superb. I am proud to be a part of his team. It’s a strong group with a fantastic team of coaches and a positive atmosphere. I really appreciate the fact that the players and the sports management value what I do. The whole thing was a fantastic experience, of which I’m happy to have been a part.

KENNETH JONASSEN

Danish national coach and coach for Viktor Axelsen:

After Viktor’s semi-final I first had to meet with Christinna Pedersen and Kamilla Rytter Juhl and then coach their semi-final, so I did not get back to the hotel until late. But we were in close contact all day, and I made sure that Christian Thelin (videoanalyst, red.) edited a video of Lin Dan. I got the video when I got back to the hotel, and I also arranged to meet with Viktor the following day. We met for breakfast on the day of the final and talked a little. It was similar to the other conversaition we’d had throughout the week, but we summed

up some of the things that had worked particularly well in the semi-final against Chen Long. We also talked about how significant it was to be in a World Championships final, and then we had a basic talk about tactics. We knew Lin Dan really well, and we knew what kind of game he would play. We went through his strengths and his weaknesses and talked about how he would play against Viktor, and how Viktor should play against him. Out in the hall we made sure that there was a relaxed atmosphere. The other finals moved back and forth, so there was a long warm-up. Before the game we did another run through the most important things, and we talked about how he would handle any challenges and problems and that he should communicate with me during the match. In the final it became clear that the shuttles were faster than they had been earlier in the championship, and this meant that we had to change our tactics a little, something which Viktor was really cool about. The communication between us was very good throughout the final. The final is different to other matches, because things don’t just get decided on a physical level; the players’ mental attitude also plays a big part. I need to be completely focused throughout the entire match. If Viktor asks for my help, or if we need to change anything tactically, then I need to be ready. On the day, I needed to be able to confirm to him that he was doing it right, so that he would be in no doubt about how he ought to play. I could tell that Viktor was getting a bit more tense on the court as he got closer winning, but I somehow managed not to get too nervous. I used my experience from previous big matches and I knew that I needed to be aware of the game at all times, that I couldn’t just sit down and take a break. I think you can see this if you look at the clips of me just after he won. I’ve not had a chance to think about how to celebrate the moment. Afterwards, I just felt completely drained and empty. There was a moment of happiness, which lasted about 3-5 minutes, followed by utter exhaustion. The whole thing went up to a higher level, and we are constantly working at reaching the very top form, and that ultimately led to our success. It’s wonderful to see that the things we do and the way we work with the players is working and that it pays off.

Han drejer rundt og tager sig nærmest vantro til hovedet. Det ligner, at virkeligheden har svært ved at trænge ind. For virkeligheden er, at Viktor Axelsen lige er blevet verdensmester. Han har slået legendariske Lin Dan i to sæt og skal kort efter træde op på det øverste trin på sejrspodiet. Men hvad ledte op til sejren? Hvad blev der gjort for at få ham til at stå så fysisk stærkt som muligt? Og hvordan blev taktikken lagt?

Han havde haft nogle små udfordringer med foden og lænderyggen op til VM, så dem kiggede vi på efter semifinalen. Hvis der er småting, der generer, kan det sætte sig mentalt og blive til frustration, så vi lavede en komplet gennemgang af hans krop og sørgede for, at han var fuldt restitueret. Det er vigtigt, at han føler sig tryg ved de ting, jeg gør, og vi foretager alle beslutninger sammen. Vi gør det som et team. Jeg var ikke i tvivl om, at hans krop var klar til finalen, selvom han selvfølgelig var træt. Jeg synes, vi lykkedes godt med at have en afslappet stemning og et godt humør, og det spidsede ikke til, fordi der var VM-finale næste dag. På finaledagen spiste vi morgenmad sammen og havde en behandling om formiddagen. Her tapede

jeg hæl og tæer op, og så skulle vi løsne lidt i svang og ryg. Efterfølgende lavede vi en gennemgang af hele kroppen, hvor jeg tjekkede, at der ikke var nogle låste led. Derefter tog vi ud i hallen, hvor han fik lidt behandling igen. Han følte, han var lidt træt i det ene lår, så det tapede jeg op, og under opvarmningen til finalen, følte han, at det var helt væk. Det var dejligt, at vi kunne få den lille frustration, det kunne blive, til at gå væk. Vi havde en rigtig god kommunikation i hele forløbet, og det var med til at sørge for, at han stod så skarpt som overhovedet muligt. Jeg sad bag tribunen under kampen, hvor jeg havde tæt kontakt med trænerne, og holdte øje med kommunikationen mellem dem. Jeg var hele tiden parat til at løbe ned med min taske, hvis det skulle blive nødvendigt. Der var en situation, hvor stævnelægen satte et plaster på Viktors knæ, og det blev jeg lidt frustreret over, for han kan ikke spille med et plaster. Der havde jeg lyst til bare at løbe ned og sætte lidt vaseline på såret. Men Viktor var utrolig mentalt stærk på dagen, og det virkede ikke til at genere ham. Jeg var meget imponeret af Viktor, og jeg synes hans udvikling det sidste år, har været fantastisk. Jeg er stolt af at være en del af holdet omkring ham. Det er et stærkt hold med en fantastisk trænerstab og en god stemning. Jeg sætter stor pris på, at spillerne og den sportslige ledelse værdsætter de ting, jeg gør. Det hele var en fantastisk oplevelse, som jeg er glad for at have være en del af.

cheflandstræner og hovedtræner for Viktor Axelsen: Efter Viktors semifinale skulle jeg mødes med Christinna Pedersen og Kamilla Rytter Juhl og efterfølgende coache deres semifinale, så jeg var først sent tilbage på hotellet. Men vi var i tæt kontakt hele dagen, og jeg sørgede for, at Christian Thelin (videoanalytikker, red.) klippede video på Lin Dan. Videoen fik jeg, da jeg kom tilbage til hotellet, hvor jeg også havde aftalt, hvornår jeg skulle mødes med Viktor næste dag. På finaledagen mødtes vi til morgenmaden, hvor vi snakkede sammen. Mange af de her snakke havde vi også i løbet af ugen, men vi opsummerede blandt andet nogle af de ting, der virkede rigtig godt i se-

mifinalen mod Chen Long. Vi snakkede også om, hvad det var for en størrelse at stå i en VM-finale, og så havde vi en grundlæggende snak om taktikken. Vi kender Lin Dan rigtig godt, og vi ved, hvordan han ville spille. Vi gennemgik hans styrker og svagheder og snakkede om, hvad han ville gøre ved Viktor, og hvad Viktor skulle gøre ved ham. Ude i hallen sørgerede vi for, at der var en afslappet stemning, og at vi hyggede os. Kampen inden bølgede frem og tilbage, så det blev en lang opvarmning. Inden kampen opsummerede vi igen nogle ting, og vi snakkede om, at han skulle håndtere udfordringerne og problemerne og være god til at kommunikere ud til mig. Finalen udspillede sig ved, at boldene var hurtigere, end de havde været tidligere i mesterskabet, og det gjorde, at vi måtte ændre lidt på taktikken, og det var Viktor helt cool med. Der var rigtig god kommunikation mellem os i hele finalen. Finaler er anderledes end andre kampe, for her bliver tingene ikke afgjort fysisk. Her spiller det mentale en stor rolle. I finalen skulle jeg være på og fuldt koncentreret hele tiden. Hvis Viktor bad om hjælp, eller vi skulle ændre noget taktisk, så var jeg klar. Jeg skulle bekræfte ham i, at nu gjorde han det rigtige, så han ikke blev tvivl om, hvordan han skulle spille. Jeg kunne godt se, at det var en lidt stivere Viktor inde på banen, da sejren nærmede sig, men jeg nåede faktisk ikke rigtig at blive super nervøs. Jeg brugte min erfaring fra tidligere store kampe, og jeg vidste, at jeg skulle være på hele tiden, og jeg måtte ikke sætte mig tilbage og tage et break. Det tror jeg også, man kan se på min jubelscene. Jeg havde slet ikke nået at overveje, hvordan jeg skulle juble. Bagefter var jeg fuldstændig drænet og tom. Det var en øjeblikkelig glæde, som varede 3-5 minutter, og bagefter var der bare træthed. Det hele gik op i en højere enhed, og vi arbejder hele tiden på at ramme formtoppe, og det lykkedes her. VIKTOR AXELSEN HAS STOLEN THE SHOW FROM KIDAMBI SRIKANTH Kidambi Srikanth from India has enjoyed a remarkable season. He has made his mark and placed himself among the top players, but Danish Viktor Axelsen has looked incredibly strong, winning the World Championships and Japan Open. BY S T I N E G R E V E

Over the past few seasons, we have become accustomed to seeing a small handful of players dominate the men’s singles rankings and taking home the throphies in the Superseries and Superseries Premier tournaments. Double Olympic gold medal winner Lin Dan, the defending Olympic champion Chen Long, and the three-time double Olympic silver medalist Lee Chong Wei have dominated over the past few years. But they have had to make room for others, as the titles have been won by many different players. “The big three” have failed to keep ahead of the young challengers this year, and have not managed to bring home as many titles as they might have hoped. One of the challengers who has really made an impression is Kidambi Srikanth from India, who especially drew attention to himself in the first half of 2017. Viktor Axelsen from Denmark has also taken his share of the limelight as he really took over in the second half of the year. Lee Chong Wei started out strongly by winning the prestigious Superseries Premier tournament All England back in March, but could not manage to follow up on this result at the following Superseries tournament, India Open. Here, it was Viktor Axelsen, who scooped up the main title after beating Chou Tien Chen from Taiwan in the final. On home ground at Malaysia Open, Lee Chong Wei was back on track right up until the final, when he was faced with his nemesis, Lin Dan from China. Lin Dan won his first title in 2017, when he sent the home favourite packing. After this, knock sounds began resonating in the badmintonworld. It was the sound of the Indian men’s singles players, Kidambi Srikath and Sai Praneet, knocking on the door to the funny side where the trophies are hidden. Rather than wait for the door to be opened for them they kicked it down themselves,

as they both played there way into the final of the Superseries tournament, Singapore Open. On this occasion Praneet appeared to be the strongest of the two as he claimed the title, but, to his credit, Srikanth managed to keep his good form by reaching the final in the two subsequent tournaments – two finals, which he won. In so doing, he beat Kazumasa Sakai from Japan in the final of the Superseries Premier tournament Indonesia Open, before securing his second title at Australian Open with a victory in the final against the Olympic champion Chen Long. After the summer and the world championships, Srikanth should attemt to keep the momentum that had been build up before the break from the Superseries tournaments. First off was the Korea Open, where neither Srikanth nor Axelsen competed. The two Indonesian players Anthony Ginting and Jonatan Christie took advantage of the favourites’ absence and made their way into the final where Ginting claimed the victory and the title. In the following week the players went at it at Japan Open and this time both Axelsen and Srikanth were in the draw. In fact, they crossed racquets in the quarterfinal where the recently crowned world champion Viktor Axelsen was superior. Axelsen made it all the way and clinched his second Superseries title this year after beating Lee Chong Wei in the final. This makes Viktor Axelsen and Kidambi Srikanth the most winning men’s singles players in 2017. Not only was the win in Japan Open Axelsen second title this year, it also ensured him the spot as the world number one in men’s singles - a spot he is trying to defend here at the DANISA DENMARK OPEN presented by VICTOR where he arrives with a fresh Superseries title and a World Championships title on his résumé.

Vi har efterhånden vænnet os til, at en lille håndfuld af spillere, har vist sig at være dominerende i herresinglerækken, når Superseries- og Superseries Premier-turneringerne skulle finde sine vindere. Den dobbelte OL-guldvinder Lin Dan, den forsvarende olympiske mester Chen Long og den tredobbelte OL-sølvinder Lee Chong Wei har de seneste år siddet på herresingletronen. Men sådan har det langt fra været i denne sæson, hvor titlerne er blevet vundet af mange forskellige spillere. ”De tre store” har ikke formået at holde de unge udfordrere bag sig i denne sæson, og det er ikke nær så mange titler, de har hevet hjem, som de plejer. Han kunne dog ikke følge op på det resultat ved den efterfølgende Superseriesturnering India Open. Her var det Viktor Axelsen, der løb med sejren, efter han slog Chou Tien Chen fra Taiwan i finalen. På hjemmebane ved Malaysia Open var Lee Chong Wei tilbage på sporet, lige indtil han i finalen stod over for sin onde ånd, kinesiske Lin Dan. Lin Dan vandt sin første titel i 2017, da han gjorde det onde ved hjemmebanefavoritten, men der skulle gå lang tid, før vi igen så nogen af dem i en finale i Superseries-regi. THE MAGNIFICENT TAI TZU YING! Three finals, three tournament victories and zero defeats from January until the middle of June – the statistics for Tai Tzu Ying in 2017 when it comes to the Superseries are impressive. The young Taiwanese player has dominated this year. BY S T I N E G R E V E

Already after the year’s first Superseries Premier tournament, All England, it was clear that there was a young Taiwanese star to watch out for in 2017. Tai Tzu Ying won the Premier tournament after a victory in the finals against Rachanok Intanon from Thailand. At the next Superseries Premier tournament, Tai Tzu Ying struck again. This time it was at Malaysia Open, when the Olympic champion, Carolina Marin from Spain, was put in her place in the final. Between the two Superseries Premier tournaments was the Superseries tournament India Open. Tai Tzu Ying did not compete at this tournament, and India’s Pusarla Sindhu saw her chance to grab a title on home ground. Again, Carolina Marin had to leave the court as the losing finalist. The unlucky Marin suffered her third consecutive final defeat at the Singapore Open, when, in the second tournament in a row, she had to see Tai Tzu Ying standing above her on the podium. At this point, the powerful women’s singles player from Taiwan had not yet lost a single Superseries match in 2017, and Marin had not yet won a tournament. This winning streak for Tai Tzu Ying was broken at the Superseries Premier tournament Indonesia Open, where she lost in the quarter final. Sayaka Sato from Japan took this opportunity to go all the way to the top and win her first title of 2017. Tai Tzu Ying endured her second defeat of the season, when she lost in the semi-final to Akane Yamaguchi from Japan at Australian Open. In an all-Japanese

final Yamaguchi had, however, to accede to the recently crowned world champion Nozomi Okuhara, who thus won her first Superseries title of 2017. The first tournament after the summer break and the World Championships was Korea Open followed by Japan Open. Tai Tzu Ying, who didn’t play the World Championships, struggled in Korea as she lost in the second round. The final at Korea Open got to be a repetition of the dramatic final from the World Championships between Pusarla Sindhu and Nozomi Okuhara. After one hour and 23 minutes of play Sindhu got her revenge and won her second title of the year. In the following week in Japan Carolina Marin finally got to stand at the top of the podium after having lost three consecutive finals in 2017. In the final she was quite superior against Chinese He Bingjiao and Marin won her first Superseries title in almost two years. Now we’re here in Odense for the DANISA DENMARK OPEN presented by VICTOR. Can Tai Tzu Ying make it all the way this year after losing a very closely played final in last year’s tournament, or will it be one of the other great competitors such as Marin, Sindhu or Okuhara who gets to take home the trophy? Only time will tell, but it seems like that we could be in for quite a drama in women’s singles.

Line Kjærsfeldt has this to say about the Superseries women’s singles in 2017: - For me, Tai Tzu Ying has really dominated this year’s Superseries tournaments. She has some good moves and a great technique, so she has a little bit of everything. This makes it hard for her opponents. And then I also think that Marin and Sindhu have done well this year.

Allerede efter årets første Superseries Premierturnering, All England, stod det klart, at der var en ny ung stjerne fra Taiwan, der ville være værd at holde øje med i 2017. Tai Tzu Ying vandt Superseries Premier-turneringen efter finalesejr over Rachanok Intanon fra Thailand. Da den næste Superseries Premier-turnering blev spillet, slog Tai Tzu Ying til igen. Denne gang var det ved Malaysia Open, hvor den olympiske mester, spanske Carolina Marin, blev sat på plads i finalen. Mellem de to Superseries Premier-turneringer var Superseries-turneringen India Open. Her var Tai Tzu Ying ikke med, og indiske Pusarla Sindhu så sit snit til at snuppe en titel på hjemmebane. MARCUS GIDEON AND KEVIN SUKAMULJO HAVE DOMINATED THE MEN’S DOUBLES IN 2017 The strong Indonesian pair were nothing short of superb in the first half of 2017. Since then, Li Junhui/Liu Yuchen from China and the Danish Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen breathing down their necks. BY S T I N E G R E V E

All England, India Open and Malaysia Open; the year’s first three tournaments in the Superseries calendar – two Superseries Premier tournaments and one Superseries tournament. The three tournaments have one thing in common: in 2017, all three were won by Marcus Gideon/Kevin Sukamuljo. It is therefore justifiable to say that the two Indonesians had a magnificent start to 2017.

However, at Australian Open, which was the last Superseries tournament before the summer break and the World Championships, none of these three pairs managed to reach the final. This satisfaction was given to Japanese pair Takeshi Kamura/Keigo Sonoda, who secured the title with a victory over Hendre Setiawan from Indonesia and Boon Heong Tan from Malaysia.

At All England the pair were victorious against Li Junhui/Liu Yuchen. In India, Ricky Karandasuwa/ Angga Pratama failed to secure a title, while at Malaysia Open it was Fu Haifeng/Zheng Siwei who faced disappointment. We have to go all the way to Singapore Open in the middle of April before we see anyone finally breaking Gideon and Sukamuljo’s winning streak.

After the World Championships, where neither Boe/Mogensen, Gideon/Sukamuljo nor Li/Liu managed to win any medals, the tournament calendar moved on to Korea and Japan, before we finally reach this point – Odense and the DANISA DENMARK OPEN presented by VICTOR.

And it certainly wasn’t just anyone who presented the Indonesians with their first 2017-defeat. It was Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen who sent them out of the tournament in the semi-final, before the Danes, after beating Li/Liu in the final, went all the way and won the tournament. The next major tournament of the season was the Superseries Premier tournament Indonesia Open. It was a big surprise when the home favourites, Gideon/Sukamuljo, lost in the first round to another Danish pair: Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup. Boe/ Mogensen played their way to the final, where they got the chance to become the first Europeans ever to win the legendary tournament in men’s doubles. Once again Li/Liu stood on the other side of the net, and after a close match it was clear that the Chinese were getting revenge for their defeat in Singapore one month earlier. In addition to the title, the two pairs were also competing for first place on the world rankings, which Li/Liu could pack in their suitcases together with their winners’ trophy.

At Korea Open both Gideoen/Sukamuljo and Boe/Mogensen were back on track as they played each other in the final. The Danes came out victorious securing their second title this year. One week later the two pairs met again at Japan Open, but this time in the semi-final. After playing extremely well Gideon/ Sukamuljo got their revenge against the Danes. In the final they won their fourth title this year as the defeated Japanese Takuto Inoue/Yuki Kaneko. It is now time to play DANISA DENMARK OPEN presented by VICTOR here in Odense and it looks like we’re in for a clash of true drama as the best men’s doubles-players in the world are fighting for the trophy. The crowd here in Odense will without a doubt create a great atmosphere as they’re cheering for their number one seeded national heroes Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen.

Mathias Boe has this to say about the men’s doubles in the Superseries tournaments in 2017: - There have been three pairs dominating the court in 2017. There have been Gideon and Sukamuljo, who started the year really well by winning the first three Superseries tournaments, then there has been us, we have won two tournaments and reached the final in another, and then there has been the Chinese pair, Li and Liu, who have won one tournament and been in the final in two others. When you put it like that, then it’s a close field, where more or less everyone in the top 15 could beat the others on a good day. So it’s pretty much anybody’s game in the men’s doubles.

De tre turneringer har en ting til fælles: i 2017 blev de alle tre vundet af Marcus Gideon og Kevin Sukamuljo. Det kan altså med rette siges, at de to indonesere fik en suveræn start på 2017. Ved All England gik det ud over Li Junhui/ Liu Yuchen. I Indien måtte Ricky Karandasuwa/Angga Pratama give fortabt, og ved Malaysia Open var det Fu Haifeng/Zheng Siwei, der måtte se sig slået. Til stor overraskelse røg hjemmebanefavoritterne Gideon/ Sukamuljo allerede ud i første runde, hvor de tabte til et andet dansk par i form af Kim Astrup/Anders Skaarup. Boe/ Mogensen spillede sig frem til finalen, hvor de fik chancen for at blive de første europæere nogensinde til at vinde den legendariske turnering i herredouble. Igen stod Li/Liu på den anden side af nettet, og efter en tæt kamp stod det klart, at kineserne fik revanche

for finalenederlaget i Singapore en måned tidligere. Ud over titlen spillede de to par faktisk også om førstepladsen på verdensranglisten, som Li/Liu dermed kunne pakke ned i bagagen sammen med trofæet. Ved Australian Open stod ingen af de tre ellers så sejrsvante par i finalen. Turen er nu kommet til DANISA DENMARK OPEN presented by VICTOR her i Odense, og der er virkelig lagt op til et brag af en kamp om trofæet i herredouble, hvor publikum uden tvivl vil bakke op topseedede danskere.

A WEALTH OF CONTENDERS FOR THE WOMEN’S DOUBLES Over the course of 2017 there has only been one women’s doubles pair who have won more than one Superseries or Superseries Premier title. This means that there are a lot of pairs competing for the major titles. BY S T I N E G R E V E

The only pair to win more than one title so far in 2017 is Japanese Misaki Matsutomo/Ayaka Takahashi. On equal terms with both Korean Chang Ye Na/Lee So Hee and Danish Kamilla Rytter Juhl/Christinna Pedersen they’ve been in three finals, but where the Japanese have managed to win two titles both the Koreans and the Danes have had to settle for only one title each. The Superseries circuit kicked off in 2017 with the Superseries Premier tournament All England in March. Danes Kamilla Rytter Juhl/Christinna Pedersen had played their way into the final, but were defeated by Chang Ye Na/Lee So Hee from Korea. The Koreans thus had the perfect start to 2017, but had to wait until June before they saw another final. Otherwise, it went well for the powerful Danish women’s doubles. About a month after the disappointing defeat in the All England final, Juhl/Pedersen would stand at the top of the winners’ podium after having triumphed in Singapore Open. Thereby, securing their first title of the season, having beaten the reigning Olympic champions Misaki Matsutomo/ Ayaka Takahashi in the final. At Indonesia Open, Chang/Lee were once again contenders, but this time they had to accept a defeat in the final to Chinese pair Chen Quingchen/Jia Yifan, who thus won their first women’s doubles title of 2017. The last tournament before the summer break and the World Championships in Glasgow was Australian Open at the end of June, and here we saw a rematch: for the second time in just a few months, Kamilla Rytter Juhl/Christinna Pedersen were competing against the formidable Japanese pair, Misaki Matsutomo/Ayaka Takahashi in a final.

The Japanese were hoping to avenge their previous loss and win their first title of 2017, and after a convincing performance in the final, they succeeded in both. Thereby, preventing the Danes from scooping their second title of the season. When the players returned after the World Championships, there were still two Superseries tournaments to go before we reached Odense and DANISA DENMARK OPEN presented by VICTOR. First Korea Open, before the tour moved onto Japan and Japan Open. In Korea home ground favourites Chang Ye Na/ Lee So Hee made it into their third final this year. But for the second time in a row they had to settle for second place, as Chinese Huang Yaqiong/Yu Xiaohan turned out to be too big a handful for the Koreans. In Japan Misaki Matsutomo/Ayaka Takahashi seemed determined to give their home crowd a title to celebrate and with that being the first pair in women’s doubles to win title number two in 2017. This became a reality as they defeated Korean Kim Ha Na/Hee Yong Kong in the final. Misaki Matsutomo/Ayaka Takahashi are thereby the most wining pair in women’s doubles so far in 2017, but they are only one title ahead of their closest rivals. It will be most exciting to see whether or not Kamilla Rytter Juhl/Christinna Pedersen can equal the scores on home court here in Odense – the crowd will most definitely cheer them on in order to do so.

What Kamilla Rytter Juhl and Christinna Pedersen have to say about the womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s doubles category from a Superseries perspective for 2017: Kamilla: - I would say, that here in 2017 it has been a seriously broad field. There are a lot of different pairs who have won Superseries tournaments, yet there is not one single pair who have won all four tournaments. Christinna: - I agree completely, and I am also very aware that Korea no longer has just one good pair, they have at least three doubles who will be tough for us to beat. One should never, ever forget about Takahashi and Matsutomo, and then there are also three relatively new couples waiting in the wings. The field is terrifyingly strong, and we will have to play very close to our best to be able to match the others. If we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t, then there are many other doubles who will get ahead of us.

MANGE OM BUDDET I DAMEDOUBLE I Superseries- og Superseries Premier-turneringerne i 2017 er der kun ét damedoublepar, som har stået øverst på podiet mere end én gang. Der er altså mange par, som byder hinanden op til dans, når der duelleres om de store titler. AF STINE GREVE

Det eneste par som indtil nu i 2017, har formået at vinde mere end én Superseries-titel, er japanske Misaki Matsutomo og Ayaka Takahashi. På lige fod med koreanske Chang Ye Na/Lee So Hee og danske Kamilla Rytter Juhl og Christinna Pedersen har de stået i tre finaler, men hvor japanerne har vundet to titler, har både koreanerne og danskerne måtte nøjes med en enkel hver. Superseries-turneringsåret 2017 blev skudt i gang med Superseries Premier-turneringen All England i marts. Danske Kamilla Rytter Juhl og Christinna Pedersen havde spillet sig frem til finalen, men måtte se sig slået af Chang Ye Na/Lee So Hee fra Korea. Dermed fik koreanere en perfekt start på 2017, men vi skulle helt hen til juni måned, før de to koreanere igen stod i en finale. Anderledes godt gik det for den stærke danske damedouble. Omtrent en måned efter det ærgerlige nederlag i All England-finalen stod Juhl/Pedersen øverst på sejrsskamlen efter at have triumferet i Superseries-turneringen Singapore Open og dermed sikret sig sæsonens første titel. I finalen gik det ud over de olympiske mestre Misaki Matsutomo/ Ayaka Takahashi. Ved Indonesia Open var Chang/Lee på spil igen, men denne gang måtte de se sig slået i finalen af kinesiske Chen Quingchen/Jia Yifan, som vandt deres første titel i damedouble i 2017. Den sidste turnering inden sommerpausen og VM i Glasgow var Australian Open i slutningen af juni, og her var der lagt op til revanche. For anden gang på få måneder stod Kamilla Rytter Juhl/ Christinna Pedersen over for de stærke japanere Misaki Matsutomo/Ayaka Takahashi.

Japanerne havde både revanche og deres første titel i 2017 til gode. Efter en overbevisende præstation i finalen fik de begge dele og forhindrede dermed danskerne i at vinde sæsonens anden titel. Da spillerne var tilbage efter VM, var der to Superseries-turneringer tilbage, før vi nåede her til Odense og DANISA DENMARK OPEN presented by VICTOR. Først gik det løs ved Korea Open, inden turen gik til Japan og Japan Open. I Korea stod koreanerne Chang Ye Na/Lee So Hee i årets tredje finale, men for anden finale i træk måtte de stille sig til takke med en andenplads, da kinesiske Huang Yaqiong/Yu Xiaohan viste sig for stærke. I Japan var Misaki Matsutomo/Ayaka Takahashi opsatte på at vinde på hjemmebane, og de kunne blive det første par til at vinde titel nummer to i 2017. Det blev en realitet, da de i finalen slog Kim Ha Na/Hee Yong Kong fra Korea. Misaki Matsutomo/Ayaka Takahashi er altså ind til nu de mest vindende i Superseriesregi i 2017. Men der er kun en enkelt turneringssejr mellem dem og de nærmeste forfølgere. Det bliver spændende at se, om Kamilla Rytter Juhl/ Christinna Pedersen kan udligne den statistik allerede her i Odense – hjemmebanepublikummet i Odense vil med garanti gøre, hvad de kan for at hjælpe Danmarks bedste damedouble mod sejr!

Det siger Kamilla Rytter Juhl/Christinna Pedersen om damedouble i Superseries-regi i 2017: Kamilla: - Jeg vil sige, at lige præcis her i 2017 har feltet været helt vildt bredt. Der er rigtig mange forskellige par, som har vundet Superseries-turneringerne. Der er ikke bare ét par der har vundet fire turneringer. Christinna: - Jeg er meget enig, og jeg er også meget opmærksom på, at Korea ikke kun har et godt par længere. De har i hvert fald tre par, som er svære for os at nappe. Japan har også vist, at de er med. Man skal aldrig nogensinde glemme Takahashi og Matsutomo, og så står der også tre forholdsvis nye par klar i kulissen. Feltet er uhyggelig stærkt, og vi skal spille meget tæt på vores bedste for at kunne matche de andre. Gør vi ikke det, så er der mange, der løber fra os.

CHINESE DOMINANCE IN THE MIXED DOUBLES In the mixed doubles rankings, two pairs reigned supreme in the 2017 Superseries. We refer, of course, to the Chinese duos Lu Kai/Huang Yaqiong and Zheng Siwei/Chen Quingchen. BY S T I N E G R E V E

Both Lu Kai/Huang Yaqiong and Zheng Siwei/Chen Quingchen have been in four finals up until now in 2017, and they have competed against each other in two of them. Lu Kai/Huang Yaqiong have won three of the four finals they have played, while Zheng Siwei/ Chen Quingchen have won two and lost two. All England was the first Superseries Premier tournament in 2017, and already at this point it became clear to badminton fans all over the world that Lu Kai/ Huang Yaqiong were gearing up for a strong season. They rose to victory after beating the Malaysian pair Chan Peng Soon/Liu Ying Goh in the final. The Chinese duo continued to shine at the next Superseries tournament India Open, beating fellow countrymen Zheng Siwei/Chen Quingchen in the final. Zheng Siwei/Chen Quingchen got their revenge shortly after as the two couples met once again. This time it was in the final at the Superseries Premiere tournament Malaysia Open. At the following Superseries tournament, Singapore Open, Lu Kai/Huang Yaqiong were back on track as they secured their third title. A “new” pair joined in the bidding for 2017 titles at the Superseries Premier tournament Indonesia Open. Olympic gold medal winners and home crowd favourites Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir returned in full force after having taken things a little easy since competing in Rio. In the final, they beat Zheng Siwei/Chen Quingchen, and made Indonesia Open the first tournament in 2017’s Superseries programme that had not been won by either of the two skilled Chinese pairs. Zheng Siwei/Chen Quingchen clinched their second title of the season when they won Australian Open, which was the last Superseries tournament before the summer break and the World Championships.

At the World Championships, Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir struck again and took home the gold, making them serious contenders for more titles when the second half of the Superseries calendar kicked off in the autumn, but so far that has not been the case. At the first two Superseries tournaments after the World Championships, Korea and Japan Open, Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir did not compete. The two superior Chinese couples did not play Korea Open either, but a third Chinese couple, Wang Yilyu/Huang Dongping, drew attention to themselves by making it all the way to final where they lost to Indonesian Praveen Jordan/Debby Susanto. In spite of Lu Kai/Huang Yaqiong entering Japan Open as the number one seed Wang Yilyu/ Huang Dongping once again were the centre of attention. The unseeded Chinese pair made it all the way and clinched their first title beating Japanese Takuro Hoki/Sayaka Hirota in the final. On their way to the final Wang Yilyu/Huang Dongping defeated both fellow countrymen Lu Kai/Huang Yaqiong in the quarters and got revenge against Praveen Jordan/Debby Susanto in the semi-final. This brings us to DANISA DENMARK OPEN presented by VICTOR here in Odense. It seems like we’re in for some thrilling and nerve-racking matches as the winners of the mixed double are to be found. Who do you think will be standing at the top of the podium by the end of the week?

Last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s winner of the DANISA DENMARK OPEN presented by VICTOR, Christinna Pedersen, has this to say about the Superseries mixed doubles category in 2017: - I think that it is totally wild that Ahmad and Natsir have managed to repeat their gold medal victory by winning the World Championships after their victory at the Olympics. It says something about the kind of class they have, and they couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have gone further. After the Rio Olympics they rested the pace just slightly to recover following the gold medal. I think it will be exciting to see whether they can continue to surf this wave in the autumn, or whether it will be the turn of the newer, slightly younger mixed doubles pairs that get to compete for the big titles. I think there are plenty of contenders, and I believe that there are different pairs who will be competing for the titles on offer.

Både Lu Kai/Huang Yaqiong og Zheng Siwei/Chen Quingchen har i 2017 stået i fire finaler frem til nu, og i to af dem har de stået over for hinanden. Lu Kai/ Huang Yaqiong har vundet tre af de fire finaler, de har spillet, mens Zheng Siwei/Chen Quingchen har vundet to og tabt to. All England var den første Superseries Premierturnering i 2017, og allerede her fik badmintonfans verden over en indikation af, at Lu Kai/Huang Yaqiong gik en god sæson i møde. De strøg nemlig helt til tops efter finalesejren over malaysiske Chan Peng Soon/ Liu Ying Goh. Kineserne fortsatte de fornemme takter ved den næste Superserie-turnering, India Open, hvor det i finalen gik ud over landsmændene Zheng Siwei/Chen Quingchen. Zheng Siwei/Chen Quingchen fik dog taget revanche kort efter, da de to par igen stod over for hinanden i en finale. Denne gang var det i Superseries Premierturneringen Malaysia Open, hvor Zheng Siwei/Chen Quingchen vandt sæsonens første titel. Ved den efterfølgende Superseries-turnering Singapore Open var Lu Kai/Huang Yaqiong tilbage på sporet, hvor de sikrede sig titel nummer tre. Til gengæld var der et tredje kinesisk par, Wang Yilyu/Huang Dongping, der gjorde opmærksomme på sig selv, ved at nå helt til finalen, hvor de blev stoppet af indonesiske Praveen Jordan/Debby Susanto. På trods af, at Lu Kai/Huang Yaqiong stillede op som topseedede ved Japan Open, så var det igen Wang Yilyu/Huang Dongping, der løb med opmærksomheden. Det useedede kinesiske par gik hele vejen og vandt deres første titel, da de i finalen slog japanske Takuro Hoki/Sayaka Hirota efter at have slået deres topseedede landsmænd i kvartfinalen og fået revanche mod Praveen Jordan/Debby Susanto i semifinalen. Dermed er vi nu nået frem til DANISA DENMARK OPEN presented by VICTOR her i Odense. Her er der virkelig lagt op til spænding og nervepirrende kampe, når turneringen skal finde sin vinder i mixeddouble.

Det siger sidste års vinder af DANISA DENMARK OPEN presented by VICTOR Christinna Pedersen om Superseries-mixeddouble i 2017: - Jeg synes, at det er fuldstændig vanvittigt, at Ahmad og Natsir gentager en guldmedalje ved at vinde VM, efter de vandt OL. Det viser noget om den klasse, de har, og længere er den ikke. Efter OL tog de det en lille smule roligt og skulle lige komme sig efter en guldmedalje i Rio. Jeg synes, det bliver spændende at se her i efteråret, om de ridder videre på bølgen, eller om det bliver alle de nyere lidt yngre mixeddoubler, som skal til at slås om de store titler. Jeg synes, der er mange om buddet, og jeg tror, at det er forskellige par, der kommer til at kæmpe om titlerne.

I JUST ENJOY PLAYING BADMINTON Tai Tzu Ying is one of the biggest stars in the women’s singles category. But even though she is a big star she tries not to put pressure on herself and instead just enjoy the game. BY K R I S T I N E L I V L U N D - P E D E R S E N

YOU ARE ONE OF THE BEST BADMINTON PLAYERS IN THE WORLD RIGHT NOW, HOW DID IT ALL BEGIN? WHY DID YOU START PLAYING BADMINTON? - My parents are badminton lovers. When I was young, I followed their footsteps onto the court. I would say my badminton life was created by them. Furthermore, I officially started to play badminton in 3rd grade.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT BADMINTON THAT YOU LIKE AND ENJOY? - Badminton is a comprehensive sport. In order to play well, people need good stamina, skill and wisdom. For me, the most attracting part is getting the winning point after an intensive play.

IN A TYPICAL WEEK FOR YOU, HOW MUCH DO YOU PRACTICE? - I have six hours of training every day. That includes physical training, weight training and then I rest Saturday and Sunday.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE HOW A TYPICAL PRACTICE SESSION GOES OFF FOR YOU? - 8:30-11:30 Practice / 12:00 Lunch / 13:00 Nap / 14:30-17:30 Practice, including work out. That’s the schedule for what I’ve done day by day.

IN WHICH WAY DO YOU FEEL YOU’VE HAD A GREAT YEAR ON COURT HERE IN 2017? - I don’t think I am outstanding. What I’ve done is to fully focus on every shot.

IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT HAS BEEN THE GREATEST RESULT IN YOUR CAREER SO FAR? - I just enjoy playing badminton. That’s why I think each of my winning game is an achievement.

DO YOU HAVE A PIECE OF ADVICE FOR ALL THE YOUNG GIRLS OUT THERE WHO ARE DREAMING ABOUT BECOMING THE NEXT TAI TZU YING? - I want to tell them: “Human beings are always full of possibilities. Never be limited. Keep moving forward without fear, and stand by your own choices.”

YOU HAVE WON SEVERAL TOURNAMENTS THIS YEAR AND YOU ARE RANKED AS THE WORLD NUMBER ONE IN WOMEN’S SINGLES. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR THE FUTURE AND WHAT DO YOU DREAM TO ACHIEVE? - I’ve never aimed for anything. What I believed is to go through it without stress. People can’t show their training result so well if they put too much stress on themselves.

EVERY TIME YOU STEP ON COURT AFTER SUCH A GREAT YEAR YOU STEP IN THERE AS THE FAVOURITE, HOW DOES THAT PRESSURE AFFECT YOU? - I don’t put any stress on myself. I just do my best in every game. My father usually told me “the beauty of the game comes from its unpredictability.” Besides, no one wins all the time. Once you do your best, no matter how the result is, it is a splendid performance.

DU ER EN AF VERDENS STØRSTE BADMINTONSTJERNER. HVORDAN BEGYNDTE DET HELE EGENTLIG? - Begge mine forældre elsker badminton, og som barn gik jeg i deres fodspor ind på badmintonbanen. Jeg vil nok sige, at mit badmintonliv blev skabt af dem. Derudover startede jeg officielt med at spille badminton, da jeg gik i tredje klasse.

HVAD ER DET VED BADMINTON, SOM DU ER VILD MED? - Badminton er en omfattende sport. Hvis du vil spille godt, skal du have god udholdenhed, god teknik og gode taktiske evner. Noget af det, som er mest tiltrækkende for mig, er at vinde matchbolden efter en meget intensiv duel.

I LØBET AF EN NORMAL UGE, HVOR MEGET TRÆNER DU SÅ? - Jeg træner seks timer hver dag og dette inkluderer også fysisk træning og vægt-træning. Lørdag og søndag slapper jeg af.

KAN DU BESKRIVE EN NORMAL TRÆNINGSDAG FOR DIG? - Fra 8.30-11.30 træner jeg, klokken 12 spiser jeg frokost, klokken 13 tager jeg en lur, fra 14.30-17.30 træner jeg igen og dette inkluderer også fysisk træning. Det er det skema, som jeg har kører efter hver dag.

HVORDAN KAN DU MÆRKE, AT DU HAR HAFT ET RIGTIG GODT ÅR PÅ BANEN I 2017? - Jeg synes ikke selv, jeg er fremragende. Det jeg har gjort er bare at fokusere på hvert eneste slag.

DU HAR VUNDET ADSKILLIGE TURNERINGER OG VÆRET NUMMER ET PÅ VERDENSRANGLISTEN, HVAD ER DINE DRØMME FOR FREMTIDEN?

- Jeg har aldrig sigtet efter noget bestemt. Jeg tror på, at man skal forsøge at komme igennem det hele uden stress. Man kan ikke vise alt det gode fra træningen, man har lavet, hvis man stresser sig selv for meget.

HVILKET PRES LÆGGER DU PÅ DIG SELV, NÅR DU TRÆDER PÅ BANEN EFTER SÅDAN ET GODT ÅR? - Jeg sørger for ikke at stresse mig selv, og jeg gør bare mit bedste i hver kamp. Min far plejede at sige til mig: “Det smukke ved spillet kommer fra dets uforudsigelighed.”. Derudover er der ingen, der vinder hele tiden. Bare du gør dit bedste, så er det en flot præstation uanset resultatet.

HVAD HAR VÆRET DET STØRSTE VED DIN KARRIERE HIDTIL? - Jeg nyder virkelig bare at spille badminton. Derfor synes jeg også, at alle mine sejre er gode præstationer.

HAR DU ET GODT RÅD TIL ALLE DE UNGE PIGER, DER DRØMMER OM AT BLIVE DEN NÆSTE TAI TZU YING? - Jeg vil sige til dem: “Mennesket er fyldt med muligheder, så du må ikke lade dig begrænse. Bliv ved med at bevæge dig fremad og stå ved dine valg.”
