PREFACE

WELCOME TO THE GREAT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS REMATCH PARTY 2014 We have barely dismantled the badminton courts and taken down the spotlights in Ballerup Super Arena before Badminton Denmark again offers world class badminton. We are now ready for the big World Championships rematch in Odense Sport Park in the days 14th - 19th Oktober 2014. The World Championships gold medal winners have to go out and prove that they are the best in their category, and all others will try to defeat them. Especially our Danish bronze medalists will try to come up to their World Championships - performance and may be even improve it. In men’s singles it is of course really exciting that Lin Dan has announced his arrival. He will no doubt try to show the other male singles, that his absence at the World Championships was to their advantage. Yonex Denmark Open is not the same size as the World Championships, but the quality of the players are - on average - higher because the players / pairs are qualified by the world ranking and in each category there are no restrictions to the number of participants from each country. Badminton Denmark is primarily able to arrange this Superseries Premier Tournament year after year because • We have an extraordinary support from our sponsor Yonex, Odense Municipality and Sport Event Denmark • We have several players at high international level, which makes it interesting for the Danish audience to follow the tournament • BD has a professional team of skilled event per- sons who together with the indispensable volunteers - primarily from Odense Badminton Club and other badminton clubs on the island

of Fyn - with a background well based on experience and know how run and manage such a large event as a Superseries Premier Tournament is.

I also want to thank our other regular partners: OK, TV3Sport, Holstebro RejseCenter, EKJ Fonden, Udvikling Fyn, Visit Fyn, Fyens Stifttidende. Welcome to all players, coaches, managers, officials, volunteers and last but not least, the always enthusiastic, badminton knowledgeable and enthusiastic audience to an exciting and eventful week with badminton sport at the highest level in Odense Idrætshal.

René Toft President Badminton Denmark

PREFACE

WELCOME TO THE YONEX DENMARK OPEN 2014 On behalf of the Municipality of Odense, it is a great pleasure to welcome you all to the Danish section of the international Badminton Superseries: the Yonex Denmark Open 2014. The Municipality of Odense accords top priority to the area of sports and events. Staging major sporting events in Odense does more than “just” stimulate interest in sport and physical exercise in general; it also gives us the opportunity to experience elite sports – world-class sport, in this case – at first hand. Greater emphasis has been placed on the health aspect of badminton this year. As a result, the local authority has chosen to work with the Denmark Open event as an active partner in the new school reform – by using badminton as a part of the “supportive teaching” programme at the city’s schools during the three weeks leading up to the autumn holidays, for example. In addition, a “regional championship” was held for year 4–6 pupils at the 33 local lower secondary schools. The opportunity to watch the “real” stars in action is therefore generating a lot of anticipation, given that the majority of the local school children have actually tried badminton for themselves. It is the eighth year in succession that the Yonex Denmark Open is being held in Odense, thanks to our excellent working relationship with the Badminton Denmark organisation, and interest in the event has grown steadily every year – as evidenced by the fact that the Sports Arena has been sold out time and time again. The Yonex Denmark Open thus joins a small and exclusive list of major, recurring sports events that are helping to brand Odense as a particularly exciting and attractive setting for such events, both throughout Denmark and abroad. We are also striving to follow this great example from the world of sports in the sphere of culture, where the city is proud to host a number of unique and recur-

ring events including the Hans Christian Andersen Festivals, the Karrusel party days, the Phono Festival and, in particular, Tinderbox, which will be held for the first time in 2015. Odense is thus making a real splash on the events map as a whole at the moment – filling the local population with a sense of pride and pleasure. The fact that the best badminton players in the world are currently visiting Odense to display their prowess with racquet and shuttlecock serves to underpin this feeling. I trust that you will enjoy your visit to Odense and the beautiful island of Fyn, and I would encourage you to experience as much as possible of what Odense has to offer. The Hans Christian Andersen Museum is a “must-see”, of course, and the city is also home to a rich cultural environment, a thriving business community and an active student body. Moreover, it comprises a number of beautiful green areas and a unique historical section. So once again: a warm welcome to you all. I am sure that Badminton Denmark, the city of Odense and all the volunteers will do their utmost to give players and spectators alike the experience of a lifetime.

Anker Boye Mayor of Odense

PREFACE

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE YONEX DENMARK OPEN 14-19 OCTOBER 2014 Dear Colleagues and Friends I cannot picture the Yonex Denmark Open without immediately thinking of Odense. It is one of the prettiest locations for a major badminton tournament and is steeped in so much history that it rubs off on the event as well. Odense is known worldwide as the birthplace of the father of fairytales, Hans Christian Andersen. The town with its river, old marketplace and ancient buildings, still evokes the spirit of his great stories. As audiences at the Yonex Denmark Open are well aware, actors dressed as Andersen and his famous characters participate in the prize presentations on finals day. It is such unique details that make the Yonex Denmark Open special and I hope it remains that way. Speaking specifically of the tournament, I have been fortunate to compete in it and win the event a few times. The Danish crowd is unfailingly sporting and knowledgeable, and it is a pleasure to play at an event where the organisation is meticulous. I’ve heard this Superseries Premier tournament complimented every year by visiting players, officials, fans and media, and I trust the 2014 edition too will maintain this high standard. One reason the Yonex Denmark Open has built a reputation is that it invests in business and media relationships. Sponsors, officials and town council members are invited for an official brunch on finals day to acknowledge their contribution. Representatives of international media have enjoyed the hospitality of Badminton Denmark during the event, and obviously this has resulted in increased coverage. If badminton

is to become a sport with a greater global following, these are the kind of steps other tournaments may need to consider. A badminton tournament is an opportunity to partner with local businesses and the tourism industry to showcase the host city, and it can contribute to the local economy. Though we are well into this season’s MetLife BWF World Superseries, it’s the first time our new title sponsor is visiting my hometown and I would like to welcome them to Denmark. May I extend such greetings to IMG Media; also in their first stint at this event. My heartiest congratulations to Badminton Denmark and all others involved in the hosting of this year’s Yonex Denmark Open. I’m sure it will be another wonderful success. THE GREATEST BADMINTON PLAYER OF ALL TIME AT YONEX DENMARK OPEN BY K R I S T I N E L I V L U N D - P E D E R S E N

It’s a great pleasure for Badminton Denmark that the best player of all time in many people’s opinion, Lin Dan, has chosen to enter Yonex Denmark Open. Peter Gade, who knows him really well, talks about what makes him such a great player.

Two Olympic gold medals and five World Championships speak for themselves. Lin Dan is an incredible badminton player. The former Danish men’s singles Peter Gade has played against him twenty times throughout his career, and he is sure that it’s the best badminton player ever who visits Odense this week. “To me he is the biggest star our sport has ever had, and he is also the biggest sportsman in China. Therefore, it’s a scoop that he is here at Yonex Denmark Open,” Peter Gade says.

time after time, he has shown that he is one of the absolute best in spite of his age. Peter Gade thinks one of the reasons for this is because he is good at taking care of himself. “He is really good at taking care of his body, and therefore he doesn’t play every tournament, like, for example, Lee Chong Wei. Of course it’s important for the physique, but it is also very important for the motivation,” says the former men’s singles.

A FRIGHTENING PLAYER Throughout the start of this century, the two players played a lot of intense and exciting matches against each other, and Peter Gade knows what makes Lin Dan such a good player. “He is the closest you will ever get to a complete badminton player, in my opinion. He has a fantastic physique and technique, and then he has admirable mental strength. He always has energy at the end of a match, and he never gives up. He is good at coming from behind, and he never looks tired,” Peter Gade says.

HOW TO STAY FIT Lin Dan is getting older and has turned thirty. But

There is no doubt that the rest of the men’s singles players who have entered Yonex Denmark Open have been hoping not to meet Lin Dan early in the tournament. Maybe especially the world’s number one, Lee Chong Wei, who has lost two Olympic finals to Lin Dan. “He is for sure a player you don’t want to draw. I think he doesn’t care whether he is seeded or not. If he prepares well for the tournament, he is the best player of the day. But I really do admire the way Lee Chong Wei enters every tournament and almost never loses a match and always plays to win,” Peter Gade says.

DENMARK – EXPECT NEW WAYS When it comes to international sporting events hosted in Denmark you can always expect something new. Over the years Denmark has hosted a large number of prestigious World and European Championships, World Cups, congresses etc. And every time the specific event has had a twist or even been added new elements. BY S P O R T E V E N T D E N M A R K

MORE ATTRACTIVE THAN EVER BEFORE The Danish ambition for hosting international sporting events is high. The objective is that each event that comes to Denmark leaves better and more attractive than before. As a host the national event partners always strive to exceed the expectations and the experience of the stakeholders, participants and spectators. Always looking for new ways of doing things and with long experience in successfully hosting a wide range of sporting events, Denmark has a long tradition for finding new ways. Using social media platforms and technology, arranging a lot of different side events up to and during the events, presenting spectacular event set up and initiating promotion activities nationally and internationally are just some of the elements used.

GAME CHANGER This August Denmark hosted the Li-Ning BWF World Badminton Championships. Denmark had waited 15 years to bring the World Badminton Championships back to Copenhagen. An impressive and innovative event set-up was lined up for players, spectators, officials and the International Badminton Federation (BWF) at the 2014 edition of the event. Not only was the event staged in a top of the art Velodrome but the presentation of the sport and players was also out of the extraordinary. The setting of spotlights underlined the main characters of the event: The players. As an example the players were presented individually – and gigantic screens above the courts also announced players and results. The World Badminton Championships has been staged in Denmark four times ´- 1983, 1991, 1999 and 2014 – and as the curtain closed on a thrilling 2014

event, the Danish organizers confirmed that, if it were entirely their choice, Denmark won’t have to wait long to stage future World Badminton Championships.

CHINESE STEALS THE ATTENTION FROM THE WORLD’S TOP The field in men’s singles may be the strongest ever in the Yonex Denmark Open. Everyone from the top nine in the world ranking has signed up to participate. However, we need to look further down the ranking to find the man that is stealing the attention. The multiple-time Olympic and World Champion, Chinese Lin Dan, completes an extraordinary field in men’s singles. BY K R I S TO F F E R M Ø L D R U P

tied the score at 2–2. Chen Long started 2014 by winning the Korea Open, but afterward he had to wait until August and the Li-Ning BWF World Badminton Championships before he once again could step onto the highest step on the podium. Chen Long is the defending champion in the Yonex Denmark Open, after defeating Lee Chong Wei in last year’s final.

Jan Joergensen

Lee Chong Wei Malaysia – No. 1 in the world ranking (as of September 22 2014) For several years Lin Dan has outshined him, and therefore Lee Chong Wei has never won the Olympics or the World Championship. He recently lost the Li-Ning BWF World Badminton Championships final against Chen Long in Denmark, and once again he missed the chance of winning the finest gold in badminton. On the other hand, Lee Chong Wei has an impressive number of Super Series wins. In 2014 the elegant Malaysian won the Malaysia Open, the All England, the India Open, and the Japan Open. The collection might grow to five as he aims for a third win at the Yonex Denmark Open. The last time Lee Chong Wei won the Yonex Denmark Open was in 2012.

Chen Long China – No. 2 in the world ranking (as of September 22 2014) The 25-year-old Chinese man reached a new career high, winning the Li-Ning BWF World Badminton Championships on August 31. Chen Long played excellently from the first round to the final, where he defeated the favorite, Lee Chong Wei, in two exciting sets. It was the fourth final between Lee Chong Wei and Chen Long in 2014, and by winning the Li-Ning BWF World Badminton Championships, Chen Long

Denmark – No. 3 in the world ranking (as of September 22 2014) The best men’s singles player in Denmark established himself in the world’s top after winning the Yonex Denmark Open in 2010. This season has been great for Jan Joergensen. In the Japan Open, for the second time in his career, he defeated Lin Dan, and one week later he defeated Chen Long in the semifinal in the Indonesia Open, where he went on to have the greatest victory ever, defeating Japanese Kenichi Tago in the final. However, the Li-Ning BWF World Badminton Championships on home ground ended in a big disappointment when he had to withdraw with an injury in the third round.

Lin Dan China – No. 15 in the world ranking (as of September 22 2014) It does not often happen that we have to go all the way to the number 15 in the world ranking to find the major favorite. Even though Lin Dan has been away from the badminton court for long periods since the Olympics in 2012, he still is the favorite every time he participates in a tournament. Last year he played almost only the World Championship, which he won anyway. He is being called the best men’s singles player of all time, and that is only confirmed by the Chinese collection of five World Championship gold medals and two Olympic gold medals. He has only lost one match in 2014, against Danish Jan Joergensen in the Japan Open. Lin Dan has won the Yonex Denmark Open three times in his career.

A F K R I S TO F F E R M Ø L D R U P

Lee Chong Wei

Chen Long

It was an amazing experience to walk into the arena. Especially entering the quarter- and semifinals gave me goosebumps.

It didn’t take long before I had to make up my mind about the game. It was cool to feel the great attention about the championships

I had to concentrate when pulling of the tape after a match. I think about what I can do to the blister.

The temperature in the arena was high and it didn’t take long before I had a nasty blister. Luckily I had the time to see a podiatrist. Wrapped up with a lot of tape it worked just fine.

I went directly to mixed zone where the journalists were ready with their questions.

After each game I received treatment by our physiotherapist Michael Riis who worked hard and did really well during the championships. It was nice with a good treatment and some time to relax and talk about all kinds of things.

SPANISH WORLD CHAMPION AGAINST CHINESE TRIO The world champion, Spain’s Carolina Marin, will once again have to play her very best if she is going to celebrate another great victory in Denmark. She will be competing against everyone in the top 15 in the world ranking, where Carolina Marin is the only European. The Chinese in particular must be keen for World Championship revenge. There will be a lot of drama in the women’s singles, where China is bringing the three highest-ranked players in the world to the Yonex Denmark Open. BY K R I S TO F F E R M Ø L D R U P

semifinal to the later winner of the tournament, Indian Saina Nehwal. Wang Shixian’s only weak spot seems to be India. At the Li-Ning BWF World Badminton Championships, she lost in the quarterfinal to Indian Sindhu V. P., and both Sindhu and Nehwal are leading the head-to-head matches against world ranking number two, Wang Shixian.

Wang Yihan (China)

Li Xuerui (China) No. 1 in the world ranking (as of September 22 2014) It is no coincidence that Olympic Champion Li Xuerui is comfortably leading the world ranking. The 23-year-old Chinese woman has been completely outstanding throughout the whole year. She has reached the final in every tournament she has participated in. Her impressive streak of finals began at the Super Series Finals last year, where Lu Xuerui did not give her opponents more than 15 points in any set in her five matches. In 2014 she has won the Malaysia Open, the Japan Open, and the Indonesia Open, and she was the runner-up at the All England, the India Open, the Singapore Open, and most recently at the Li-Ning BWF World Badminton Championships, where she lost an exciting three-set final against the Spanish Carolina Marin. Li Xuerui won 20 games in a row before her defeat in the World Championship final.

Wang Shixian (China) No. 2 in the world ranking (as of September 22 2014) The Chinese women’s singles player has been top class during the entire 2014 season. Particularly the first half of the year, they were untouchable. Wang Shixian is a major part of that. In March she won the All England, defeating Li Xuerui, and a month later she repeated the victory at the India Open. At the Australian Open, she could have secured the ninth Chinese Super Series win in a row, but she lost in the

No. 3 in the world ranking (as of September 22 2014) Wang Yihan is the defending champion of the Yonex Denmark Open, and she also completes the great Chinese trio in women’s singles. However, the 26-year-old Chinese woman is struggling with her form. In her last three tournaments, she has been out before the quarterfinals. Nevertheless, Wang Yihan has to be considered one of the top favorites, since in 2014 she has had two Super Series wins in Korea and Singapore while she also won the Swiss Open. Her victory in last year’s Yonex Denmark Open was secured after a 22–20 win in the third set against Korean Ji Hyun Sung.

Carolina Marin (Spain) No. 8 in the world ranking (as of September 22 2014) There is no doubt that Carolina Marin surprised everyone at the Li-Ning BWF World Badminton Championships in Denmark. Not only did she become the crowd’s favorite, she also ended up as the first ever Spanish World Champion in badminton. She defeated Li Xuerui in the final, armed with a fantastic left hand. Twenty-one-year-old Carolina Marin won a number of smaller tournaments before she won the European Championship in April. Her first appearance in a Super Series final came in the Australian Open, where she lost against Saina Nehwal. However, two months later, she was on top of the podium in Ballerup Super-Arena with the World Championship gold medal around her neck. That is why Carolina Marin has to be considered one of the absolute hottest names in international women’s singles.

A F K R I S TO F F E R M Ø L D R U P

Den suveræne finalestime begyndte allerede ved Super Seriesfinalerne sidste år, hvor Li Xuerui vandt overlegent uden at afgive mere end 15 point i et sæt over sine fem kampe. Hun har i 2014 vundet Malaysia Open, Japan Open og Indonesia Open, mens hun er blevet nummer to ved All England, India Open, Singapore Open og seneste ved VM, da hun tabte en spændende kamp i tre sæt til spanske Carolina Marin. Inden nederlaget i VM-finalen havde Li Xuerui vundet 20 kampe i træk.

Tilbage i marts

THE POPULAR DANISH COACHES BY K R I S T I N E L I V L U N D - P E D E R S E N

A number of Danish badminton coaches are working abroad, and the candidates from the small country in the North are very attractive in the rest of the world. The journey to Germany, England, or Spain is exciting, but the cultural differences also create some challenges for Danish coaches abroad. He looks calm with his hands folded in his lap, looking at what is going on at court. A few seconds later, he jumps around in joy and hugs the Spanish national coach Fernando Rivas, when Chinese Li Xuerui hits the shuttle into the net. Anders Thomsen has been a part of the making of a world champion. “In 2008 Fernando Rivas and I said that we believed Carolina Marin could win the World Championship or the Olympic Games once. That was our goal with her,

but not many people believed us. We had faith, and so did Carolina. Maybe we had expected it to happen later, but now was the time,” says Anders Thomsen, who is assistant national coach in Spain, where he has been working since 2008. Anders Thomsen was back in Denmark when 21-year-old Carolina Marin won the Li-Ning BWF World Badminton Championships in women’s singles in the most spectacular way and surprised everybody. The

RUBBER-STAMPED DANES Anders Thomsen and Jakob Høi are both sure that it is easier to get a job as badminton coach abroad just because they are from Denmark. Denmark is a badminton nation with great traditions and a club culture that other countries admire. “We have a lot of active players and a good club structure in Denmark. There is a natural respect for me as a coach because I am from Denmark, but of course it’s not enough. I still need to do my job well. Because I bring the Danish badminton culture with me, I am able to be critical all the time. I want to be involved in youth work, education for coaches, and national competitions,” Jakob Høi says. “I’m sure that we have kind of a rubber stamp because we come from Denmark. It has been easier for me to get a job here in Spain because I’m from Denmark. We have kind of a ‘fame’ in Europe because a lot of people know that Danish coaches are good quality,” Anders Thomsen says.

known that I wanted to work abroad at one point, but I didn’t think that it would be for so long,” Anders Thomsen says.

MANY EMIGRANTS Anders Thomsen is not the only one who has been chosen to leave the safe, well-known, and privileged badminton environment in Denmark to work abroad. A lot of countries have employed Danish coaches, among them Germany, New Zealand and Holland. Jakob Høi is national head coach in England. He worked as U-19 national coach in Denmark and national head coach in Germany before he traveled to England. “I have always been attracted by other cultures and like the challenge in the meeting with people from different cultures. I have always wanted to work abroad, but it had to be in countries where there were some decent badminton to work with. It suited my ambitions well to work in countries where the players could compete with the Danish players,” Jakob Høi says.

Of course Danish coaches have a lot of experiences from Denmark and maybe also a picture of how things should be when they work abroad, but for Anders Thomsen it has also been very important to be humble in the way he works and to respect the Spanish culture. “Of course you have to get used to the fact that some things are different, and of course there are some things that annoy me. But it is important to understand that I’m the foreigner here, and I’m really happy to be here. Otherwise I wouldn’t have stayed for such a long time,” he says. Jakob Høi has also experienced that the approach to the sport is different in other European countries, an experience that he has gained a lot of learning from. “You cannot just ‘copy-paste’ things you, for example, have been doing in Denmark. The differences in each country are too great. I’ve grown as a person and as a coach in England, and I have learned to question some of the things we do in Denmark. I’ve learned to work in a very analytic way, because the development has to be proved if you want to get support in England. Therefore, the buttons we push have to be the right ones,” he says.

THE KOREAN CAVALRY For several years Korea has had a tradition of producing top-class men’s doubles. That was highly evident at the Li-Ning BWF World Badminton Championships, where two Korean couples were in the final. Two of the Korean couples will be at the Yonex Denmark Open as, respectively, defending champions and world champions. Naturally, that gives them the status of favorites. However, there are a lot of strong couples in the men’s doubles – including home favorites Carsten Mogensen and Mathias Boe. BY K R I S TO F F E R M Ø L D R U P

All England. At the Thomas Cup, they defeated the world number one, Lee and Yoo, and they got all the way to the final in the Japan Open and the Indonesia Open. Both times they were runners-up. They also became runners-up in last year’s Yonex Denmark Open. However, with a fully recovered Mohammad Ahsan, the Indonesians will as usual be among the big favorites.

Mathias Boe / Carsten Mogensen

Lee Yong Dae/Yoo Yeon Seong Korea – No. 1 in the world ranking (as of September 22 2014) Measured by the latest couple of seasons, there is no doubt that Lee Yong Dae and Yoo Yeon Seong are the best men’s doubles in the world. However, even the very best are not unbeatable. Even though the two Koreans have a huge lead in the world ranking, and even though they won the Japan Open, the Indonesia Open, and the Australian Open, coming into the LiNing BWF World Badminton Championships, they lost the final when their countrymen Ko Song Hyun and Shin Baek Choel put their winning streak to an end. Lee and Yoo are the defending champions of the Yonex Denmark Open, and they will get the chance for World Championship revenge when they play in Odense.

Mohammad Ahsan/Hendra Setiawan Indonesia – No. 2 in the world ranking (as of September 22 2014) The 2013 world champions never got the chance to defend their title because a back injury forced Ahsan to withdraw. When they are free of injuries and back in shape, the Indonesian couple can defeat everyone. They ended last season by winning the Super Series Finals, and this season they won the

Denmark – No. 4 in the world ranking (as of September 22 2014) Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen have been the best men’s doubles in Europe for many years, and according to them, the Asian players do not like to play against their Danish style. Boe and Mogensen have found their way to several major finals with a strong attacking game and great tactical knowledge. In 2011 they won both the All England and the Super Series Finals. The following year they won silver at the Olympics in London, and last year they lost the final in the World Championship against the Indonesians Ahsan and Setiawan. This year they collected another medal at the Li-Ning BWF World Badminton Championships, reaching the semifinal on home ground. Although they have been defeated in the greatest finals, the Danes frequently win Super Series tournaments. In 2014 they have won both the Korea Open and the India Open, and as former Yonex Denmark Open champions, the expectations are high for Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen.

Ko Sung Hyun/Shin Baek Choel Korea – No. 9 in the world ranking (as of September 22 2014) These are the defending world champions, who won a memorable final at the Li-Ning BWF World Badminton Championships against countrymen Lee and Yoo. Three unbelievably close and entertaining sets made a reasonable season turn into a career high. One half of couple, 27-year-old Ko Sung Hyun, was also in a World Championship final in 2011, but back then he ended as runner-up. Ko and Shin have played together for a year. On their way to the World Championships, they managed to reach the semifinal only twice, in the All England and the Singapore Open. However, winning the Li-Ning BWF World Badminton Championships has brought them into the absolute top of the men’s doubles.

women’s doubles in the world. In 2013 they ended a great year by winning the Super Series Finals, and they were voted badminton players of the year in Denmark. This year they have reached the semifinals several times, and they were runners-up at the Singapore Open, losing to Bao and Tang from China. They have physical strength like no other couple in Europe, and they are the defending European champions. They have both won the Yonex Denmark Open in mixed doubles, but after losing in last year’s women’s doubles final, they must be even more determined to win at home this year.

Ayaka Takahashi/Misaki Matsutomo (Japan)

Tang Jinhua/Bao Yixin (China) No. 1 in the world ranking (as of September 22 2014) At the top of the world ranking, we find these young Chinese players. Nevertheless, they had only one game at the Li-Ning BWF World Badminton Championships. They were first seed in the tournament but lost in the second round after a bye in the first round. Tang and Bao are both very young, and they have been the dominating couple since they were teamed up in the fall of 2013. Back then they had a winning streak of seven competitions in a row, including the Yonex Denmark Open. Their streak was not broken until the All England tournament, where they lost in the second round. Quickly they returned to a winning course and won the Swiss Open and the Singapore Open. However, they have lacked form during the summer, where they lost in the quarterfinal in the Japan Open and, most recently, the disappointing defeat at the Li-Ning BWF World Badminton Championships. None of that changes the fact that they are the defending champions at the Yonex Denmark Open and once again among the favorites.

Christinna Pedersen/Kamilla Rytter Juhl (Denmark) No. 2 in the world ranking (as of September 22 2014) Stability has brought the Danes to the second position in the world ranking. Through several years, both of them have made a strong impression in mixed doubles, and when they won the Malaysian Open two years ago, they also stepped up among the best

No. 3 in the world ranking (as of September 22 2014) Japan has brought itself into a strong international position in badminton, with several strong couples in women’s doubles. Among the couples are Takahashi and Matsutomo, ranked number three in the world. Although they lost in the third round at the Li-Ning BWF World Badminton Championships, they have had a tremendous 2014. They were the runnersup at the Malaysian Open, they won the German Open, and they had a very popular win at home in the Japan Open. Prior to the Li-Ning BWF World Badminton Championships, 24-year-old Takahashi and 22-year-old Matsutomo were also runners-up at the Australian Open. Thus, the resistant Japanese have to be counted among the favorites in Yonex Denmark Open, reaching the semifinals last year.

Tian Qing/Zhao Yunlei (China) No. 4 in the world ranking Zhao Yunlei is without doubt one of the best female double players of all time. The 28-year-old Chinese woman won two Olympic gold medals in London in 2012 in mixed doubles and women’s doubles with Tian Qing. She did the same thing at the Li-Ning BWF World Badminton Championships, where she once again won two gold medals – also this time with Tian Qing in women’s doubles. Though Tian and Zhao started 2014 a little unstable, reaching only two quarterfinals and a semifinal, they found a superb form after the Uber Cup in May. First they won the Indonesia Open and then the Australian Open, and finally they won the Li-Ning BWF World Badminton Championships. In the Yonex Denmark Open they will get the chance to add yet another great victory to the list since neither of them has ever won the Yonex Denmark Open in women’s doubles.

PROFILER | DAMEDOUBLE

A F K R I S TO F F E R M Ø L D R U P

DAMEDOUBLE | PROFILER

PROFILES | MIXED DOUBLES

EVERYONE AGAINST ZHANG AND ZHAO The Chinese mixed double of Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei is going to be the couple that everyone else will have to defeat if they want to win the Denmark Open. The two Chinese players are almost regularly represented in the semifinal at major tournaments. However, the world champions are going to compete against a number of the best mixed doubles in the world, like countrymen Xu Chen and Ma Jin and the home favorites Joachim Fischer and Christinna Pedersen. higher level and won the Super Series finals. It became the start of a successful partnership that has brought them great Super Series wins, an Olympic bronze medal, and three wins at the Super Series Finals. However, the mixed double plays particularly great when they play at home in Denmark. Fischer and Pedersen have won the Yonex Denmark Open three times, and they have won the invitation tournament Copenhagen Masters four years in a row. Thus, the expectations are high when the Danish mixed double participates in the Yonex Denmark Open.

Xu Chen/Ma Jin

Zhang Nan/Zhao Yunlei China – No. 1 in the world ranking (as of September 22 2014) The best mixed double in the world and in China is Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei. They have managed to create great successes together. They are boyfriend and girlfriend outside the court, and on the court they have won everything worth mentioning. In 2010 they won the All England, going all the way through the qualification round. The following year they won the World Championship for the first time, and in 2012 they won the gold medal at the Olympics in London, defeating countrymen Xu Chen and Ma Jin. At this year’s Li-Ning BWF World Badminton Championships, Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei once again ended up with gold medals around their necks after another win against Xu Chen and Ma Jin. Apart from the LiNing BWF World Badminton Championships, Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei have won the Korea Open and the Japan Open in 2014, and they are the defending champions in the Yonex Denmark Open.

Joachim Fischer Nielsen/ Christinna Pedersen Denmark – No. 2 in the world ranking (as of September 22 2014) Joachim Fischer and Christinna Pedersen were put together in 2008 to strengthen the Danish mixed doubles. Right from the beginning, they became a great success. Fischer and Pedersen won both the Yonex Denmark Open and the Dutch Open in their first season together. The following year they reached an even

China – No. 3 in the world ranking (as of September 22 2014) It seems like Xu Chen and Ma Jin have become the eternal runners-up. Just in 2014 the Chinese couple has been in four major finals, but won only one of them. The victory came in the Malaysian Open, where they defeated Joachim Fischer and Christinna Pedersen in the final. The Danes fought back and won the Indonesia Open, where they once again met in the final. Xu Chen and Ma Jin also lost the final in the Korea Open and more recently at the Li-Ning BWF World Badminton Championships. Both times their countrymen Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei defeated them. Despite the runner-up tendency, the Chinese are always among the favorites. Two years ago they won the Yonex Denmark Open, and it is very likely that they once again will be a part of the final matches over the weekend.

Tontowi Ahmad/Liliyana Natsir Indonesia – No. 4 in the world ranking (as of September 22 2014) The best mixed doubles in the world are gathered at Denmark Open, and it only makes sense to include the last couple from the top four in the world ranking. Tontowi Ahmad has struggled with an injured ankle all summer, and that is the reason that the Indonesian has played only five tournaments in 2014. It also forced the double to withdraw from the Li-Ning BWF World Badminton Championships and took away their chance of defending their 2013 title. At the five tournaments that they have played, they have reached at least the semifinal every time. In the spring they won the All England for the third time in a row, and they also won the Singapore Open. With Tontowi Ahmad back on track, the competition in mixed doubles is just getting even harder.

PROFILER | MIXDOUBLE

A F K R I S TO F F E R M Ø L D R U P

MIXDOUBLE | PROFILER

BADMINTONSPORTENS DAG – OGSÅ FOR DE ALLERMINDSTE Lørdag den 6. september afholdt mere end 70 badmintonklubber over hele landet Badmintonsportens Dag. BY K R I S TO F F E R M Ø L D R U P

Sporadiske brag bryder ud i hallen.

Fjerboldene flyver videre rundt i hallen.
