Welcome to

Denmark Open 2010 On behalf of the city of Odense it is a great pleasure for me to welcome you all to the Danish part of the international Super Series in badminton, Denmark Open 2010. The area of sports is very much prioritized by the city of Odense. Amongst many things we do in this area, we especially work on attracting big sports events to the city; a job we do in close collaboration with Sport Event Fyn, but of course also with the different Danish federations and the local clubs. I therefore would like to thank especially the Badminton Association of Denmark and all the volunteers from our local club Odense Badminton Club, who make this event possible. To hold big sports events in Odense does not only stimulate the public interest for sports and exercise in all; it also makes it possible on close hand to experience sport in the absolute elite – some times even world class. This Denmark Open event is no exception; it is with no doubt the best badminton players of the world, who visit Odense for the fourth time in a row - to compete for the prestigious glory and title of this tournament.

Odense is of course very proud of the Denmark Open event. By hosting this event, we are automatically compared with big cities like Paris, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Hong Kong – cities which normally get much more international publicity than our city. But we are now, thanks to Denmark Open, much more noticed around the world and that is why Odense continues to prioritize this event. Because only be trying to be an innovative and fourth seeing city, which sees big sport events as an important attraction and an asset for the citizens, we will stand out as a unique city. Therefore, the scene for a fantastic and exiting event is definitely set for both participants and spectators – I know the Badminton Association of Denmark, the City of Odense and the volunteers will certainly do anything we can, to make this event a success in every way. Once again welcome to Odense, have a pleasant time and good luck to all the participants. Anker Boye Mayor, Odense City

BWF PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE for the

DENMARK OPEN 2010 SUPER SERIES 26-31 OCTOBER 2010

Welcome to Odense! First and foremost, allow me to record my sincere appreciation and thanks to the Badminton Association of Denmark for its success in hosting another edition of the Denmark Open 2010 Super Series. There is no shortage of tournaments for our players, and this augurs well for the future of our sport as competitions is the key ingredient to ensure the players have a career path in badminton. We in BWF are also excited with what the future holds for badminton – new presenting sponsors, new competition structure and badminton’s first ever US$1 million prize money event. For the 2010 Super Series circuit, I would like to welcome Enopi as the presenting sponsor for the remaining of the season. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all the sponsors of the Denmark Open Super Series and local agencies for their unwavering support through the years and hope for their continued support in the future.

also see a two-tier elite competition comprising the Super Series and Premier Series with minimum total prize money of US$200,000 and US$350,000 respectively. There is a significant increase in prize money with the Korea Open and Indonesia Opens, which have been elevated to Premier Series status, offering US$1.2 million and US$600,000 in total prize money. And on this note, I would also like to congratulate the organisers and Badminton Association of Denmark on its success in elevating the status of the Denmark Open from a Super Series event to a Premier Series event next year. This is a huge boost for badminton and I sincerely hope the players will take full advantage of the diverse and increased number of tournaments to ensure a sustainable income for them. The BWF have also introduced player commitment regulations and this will ensure our world class players are regularly featured to the world television audience if they are to become stars.

Once this is achieved, the audience will begin to identify them, to follow their ‘story’ and want to know ‘what happens next’, ‘will they win the next event’ etc. And only by helping our players to become stars can we grow the sport. This is good for the players. The World’s best players in the World’s best events make the sport stronger and more credible. There has been great success in raising prize money across the Super Series, which includes next year the first Million dollar tournament, so there is more opportunity for players to be well rewarded for their hard work. Finally, to the players, I wish them the very best of luck and hope that the experience will be just as valuable as the win.

Smashing ambitions By Lars Lundov, Chief Executive, Sport Event Denmark

Denmark has great ambitions to host major international championships on Danish soil. Danish badminton players have a long-standing tradition of medals and good ranks wherever and whenever they compete, but to win a medal on home ground is and will always be something special. Denmark has already staged many major badminton events on Danish soil, and if it is up to Sport Event Denmark to decide, then Denmark will still be in the frontline in the future, too. From next year on, the Denmark Open tournament is nominated as one of five exclusive Premier Super Series. This nomination gives us the opportunity to welcome the world’s best badminton players to Denmark each year in the future, too. But Denmark’s ambitions go even further, as we are bidding for the World Badminton Championships 2013. Next goal: the World Badminton Championships 2013 Sport Event Denmark wants to ensure that the Danish players get the chance of playing on home ground. We would be pleased and proud to invite

the world badminton elite to Denmark and deliver a top-class event that they will never forget. Therefore, Sport Event Denmark and The Badminton Association of Denmark are sending in a bid for the World Badminton Championships 2013 to the BWF, as soon as the event guidelines are available.

Danish display window Until the run-up for the potential World Badminton Championships 2013 in Denmark, the Premier Super Series tournament is on the programme. A Premier Super Series is extremely attractive to host as the world’s 10 best players

in all categories are obliged to participate, and moreover the prize money is very high. It is not only crucial for Sport Event Denmark that we are able to present the absolutely best top players on Danish soil. It is also vital for the audience, the tvviewers and for the Danish players, and speaking about the Danish players they get the home ground advantage and the chance of demonstrating to the audience that they can match the world elite. From an organiser point of view it is decisive that we can show to the world that we are constantly developing and improving the staging of our top-class tournaments, especially in terms of the event set-up.

Social platforms as digital venues Also, the Danish badminton community is at the top in terms of communicating the badminton sport and involving fans and supporters. Over the past few years, the Danish badminton community has been a role model for the other Danish sports federations in terms of adopting social media. Very successfully, the Badminton Association of Denmark has utilised the many options of self-selection of stories, media and messages, when they ambitiously and regularly handle live streaming, blogging, facebook, twitter, flickr and youtube.

Sport Event Denmark thinks that the Badminton Association of Denmark sets a good example of communication that involves the target groups at alle times, which in our opinion is vital.

Crucial international influence

This year, the Danish former badminton Olympic champion, Poul-Erik Høyer, was appointed as the President of Badminton Europe. Poul-Erik Høyer replaced another presidential Dane, Tom Bacher, cementing Denmark’s position as one of the leading nations in Badminton Europe.

Sport Event Denmark acknowledges the importance of political contributory influence and is confident that the Danish badminton community has a lot to offer.

FACTS ON SPORT EVENT DENMARK Sport Event Denmark is the national catalyst for hosting international sports events and sports congresses in Denmark. The organisation offers advisory services as well as financial support to organisers of World and European Championships (and other events at that level), but also to organisers of leading sports political congresses on Danish soil. Sport Event Denmark’s advisory services are based on a long-term cooperation with sports federations, host cities, host regions and tourism organisations and all partners are working hard to establish the best possible hosting environment in for the Danish sports community. Because Sport Event Denmark has been in the business for so long, we know some of the short cuts, useful when bidding for and staging major international sports events. Sport Event Denmark was established in 1994 by the Danish government, the NOC and Sports Confederation of Denmark and Team Danmark.

FACTS ON PREMIER SUPER SERIES Out of 12 Super Series events, so far five nations have been chosen to host a Premier Super Series event; Korea, Indonesia, England, China and Denmark. The new tournament concept starts in 2011 and continues till at least 2013. Thanks to the new concept, the total tournament prize money has been raised from US Doll. 3.3 million at US Doll. 4.7 million.

Fyns Flotteste Fødevaremarked En drøm er gået i opfyldelse

Fiskeafdelingen

Mange hilsner

History

Denmark Open Super Series - the flagship of all Danish tournaments.

of The Denmark Open

The history of the tournament goes back 75 years to the season of 1935-1936 where it was played in Copenhagen for the first time under the name “International Championships of Denmark”. The inspiration to this kind of tournament came from abroad. Danish players participated in international championships in different countries in Europe and the Badminton Association of Denmark (BAD) thought that we should have a tournament like that in Denmark – Denmark Open was born! The Danes weren’t very hospitable the first year – they won all 5 events – but it changed in the years to come and more and more foreign players came to Denmark to participate in the tournament.

The Second World War put a stop to this new invention in Danish badminton. For five years Denmark Open waited in the dark and finally, in 1946 the tournament was back – the foreign players weren’t. Many countries were so marked by the long war that it took years before they sent players to Denmark again. In 1967 and for many years to come the finals were played in K.B.Hallen in Copenhagen. Still, the preliminary rounds were in the beginning played at other sites but later on the whole tournament was played at one place. In 1986 BAD took a decision to move the tournament to different Danish cities. Aalborg was the first city to profit from this and Denmark Open has been played in many Danish mayor cities ever since. Besides Aalborg, Vejle, Farum, Aarhus and now Odense have hosted the tournament each for several years.

The name of the tournament has changed with time. Up to the 1990'ties the tournament was The Danish Open. Then the tournament took a new name with a sponsor at the time (Realkredit Denmark) and has kept the name The Denmark Open as part of the title ever since. The Denmark Open is the tournament in Denmark with most prestige and highest price money. Danes have taken the title several times. Morten Frost has taken a total of 8 titles – 7 in a row! – and profiles like Tonny Ahm, Kirsten Thorndahl, J. Hammergaard Hansen, Erland Kops, Finn Kobberø, Svend Pri, Flemming Delfs, Lene Køppen, Poul-Erik Høyer, Thomas Lund, Camilla Martin and Peter Gade have all won the tournament. The Danish players are always very motivated to do as good as possible on home soil with a big home crowd cheering for them.

PROFILES MIXED DOUBLE

Pedersen/Fischer back to compete for third win in a row

Joachim Fischer has proven to be back after an injury and will be chasing his third win in a row at the Denmark Open with partner Christinna Pedersen. This year they will be joined by another Danish world-class couple, Kamilla Rytter Juhl and Thomas Laybourn. By Isabella Hindkjær

Christinna Pedersen/Joachim Fischer, Denmark World ranking: 23 Christinna Pedersen and Joachim Fischer constitute one of the strongest couples in this year’s mixed doubles category. Last year they made it into the top ten couples in the world beating some of the very best international profiles. But for the past few months Joachim Fischer has struggled with an injury, which sent the pair out of the top ten in the World Rankings. However, these past few tournaments the Danes have proven to be well on their way was back as they reached the semifinals in Japan Open just a month ago. Last year they took home their second Denmark Open title when they beat England’s Donna Kellogg/Anthony Clark in an intense three set match. This year they are back in Odense with the chance to make an extraordinary hat trick by winning Denmark Open for the third time in a row.

Kamilla Rytter Juhl/Thomas Laybourn, Denmark World ranking: 4 The Danish top mixed double Kamilla Rytter Juhl and Thomas Laybourn are no strangers to the Denmark Open tournament. Back in 2005, when Kamilla Rytter Juhl was just 21 they won their first Denmark Open title. Since then they have come second three times so they are sure to be hungry for their second title. However, in the mean time they have taken home many other international titles. Their international break came when they surprised everyone reaching the All England final back in 2005. Just last summer the Danish couple achieved their greatest accomplishment so far when they became the 2009 World Champions beating the current number 1 pair in the world Indonesian Nova Widianto/Lilyana Natsir in the final. This year they have had some great results as well, taking home the title in Singapore Open and coming second in Indonesia Open. Kamilla Rytter Juhl and Thomas Laybourn are known for being one of the most entertaining mixed doubles to watch because of their creative and slightly unorthodox playing style and their positive attitude on court. With their great fighter spirit and dynamic play they are sure to give the audience an excellent badminton experience in this year’s Denmark Open.

The absolute top to fight in Odense By Nikolaj Albrectsen

Two out of three pairs from the Top 3 on the world ranking are participating in Odense. But the Danes also have to watch out for Thailand. Hendra Gunawan/Vita Marissa, Indonesia world ranking 2: Number two in the world are the favorites to win Sunday’s final in mixed doubles – but some people might say Nova and Natsir, when they have to talk about a Indonesian mixed double. But never less Gunawan and Vita Marissa is a pair, who might step out of Nova/Natsir’s shadow and shine in Odense. During the last year Marissa and Gunawan have proved their position in the top of the world. Earlier in 2010 they won the Chinese Taipei Grand Prix, and the history book shows to more finals for the Indonesians. The came in second in Paris, French Super Series and in Macau Open. But Marissa and Gunawan still need to prove the Danish crowd, because of their last visit in Denmark. The pair only made it to second round in last year’s Denmark Open.

Robert Mateusiak/Nadiezda Zieba, Poland, world ranking 3: One of the other favorites is more well-known in Denmark. In Badmintonligaen they represent Greve, and Mateusiak/Zieba are hard to beat in Denmark in general. They were close to make it to the final in Denmark Open 2009 – they got match point against Joachim Fischer and Christinna Pedersen, but still ended up losing. But the Polish pair knows the feeling of winning: They celebrated gold medal in Hong Kong Super Series 2009 and repeated that in Indonesia this summer. Another Danish pair has spoiled a Polish party. Thomas Laybourn and Kamilla Juhl were the guys beating Zieba and Mateusiak in Manchester, and that loss gave Mateusiak and Zieba silver medal in the European Championships. Despite their great results, they still must be really disappointed after the first round loss at the World Championships. They were predicted to bring home a medal for Poland, but came home empty handed just after one match.

Sudket Prapakamol/Saralee Thoungthongkam, Thailand world ranking 8: A very characteristic pair is entering Odense. Sudket, with his lazy attitude, can change in a second and be jumping untiring. And with the little Saralee at the net it is a very interesting pair to watch play. When all the mixed double pairs are participating, the Thai pair mostly enters the quarter finals and then loose – that has happened in China Masters, Indonesia and Korea. But one time they made it through to the final. Therefore the best result for Sudket and Saralee must be their second place in Malaysia Open Grand Prix. Last time they were in Denmark, Sudket and Saralee made an excellent effort by beating the top seeded Nova and Natsir and went all the way to the semifinal

Tine Baun plays for her second Denmark Open title

Last year’s champion Tine Baun is ready to fight for her second win in Denmark Open. Another Danish star in the making, the young talent Karina Jørgensen, will be playing to enter the main tournament.

By Isabella Hindkjær

Tine Baun, Denmark World ranking: 4

Through the years many great players have represented Denmark in the womens single category. And this era belongs to Tine Baun. A few years ago she was ready to take over when Camilla Martin left and since then she has been unstoppable. The 31-year old player is currently number 4 in the world, and has won a large amount of national and international titles over the past years. In Denmark Open she plays as the reigning champion having beaten Wang Yihan from China in last year’s finale, an exciting three set match that lasted more than an hour. So far, Tine has had a great year winning both All England for the second time and the European Championship. Even though she has been struggling with some injuries lately she has shown that she is ready to play at her best level. Just a couple a weeks ago she came second in the China Open Super Series and proved that she is definitely ready for the Denmark Open Super Series. Also, earlier this year Tine Baun got married which is the reason why she has changed her last name from Rasmussen to Baun. However, her excellent game and fighting spirit is still the same and it will be exciting to see if she will be able to go all the way and regain her title in this year’s Denmark Open.

Karina Jørgensen, Denmark World ranking: 75 At only 22 Karina Jørgensen from Denmark is one of the youngest contestants in this year’s Denmark Open. But despite her young age, she has already achieved great results and shown a lot of promise as one of the newcomers in the womens’ singles category. Back in 2007 she won the European Championship in the youth category for players under 19. And as a senior player she was on the danish womens’ team, when they won the European Team Championship earlier this year. Also, this year she has won Yonex Dutch International and just a few weeks back she took home the title of Czech Open. In Last year’s Denmark Open Karina Jørgensen made it through the qualification and managed to enter the main tournament. Now the young dane will be participating in Denmark Open for the second time and as of the upcoming talents in danish badminton she is definitely one to look out for.

China’s

number one lady is back for Denmark Open By Isabella Hindkjær

Five of the top ten ladies singles in the world will be on court in this year’s Denmark Open. Last years runner up, Chinese Wang Yihan, is currently the best in the world and definitely one to look out for.

Wang Yihan, China World ranking: 1 At only 22 years of age Wang Yihan from China is already the number one womens’ singles player in the world. In 2006 she kickstarted her career by winning the World Junior Championships and since then she has risen straight to the top of the chinese pyramide of great ladies’ singles players. Last year she took home her first All England Title at the age of just 21. Wang Yihan has played a lot of close matches against Danish favourite Tine Baun, and last year’s Denmark Open finale was no exception. In an exciting three set match she lost to the dane. This year she is back,as the top seeded favourite and without a doubt ready to try to win her first ever title in the Danish Super Series tournament.

Eriko Hirose, Japan World ranking: 8 Eriko Hirose is Japans biggest hope in the ladies single category. In no time she has made a name for herself by beating several top players and just last year she was a semifinalist in Denmark Open. This year she has already made it far in several Super Series tournaments. She came third in both Indonesia Open and Malaysia Open and this year she has climbed from being number 28 to entering the top ten in the World Rankings.

Pi Hongyang, France World ranking: 7 One of the best and most consistent badminton profiles in Europe is French player Pi Hongyan. As her name indicates, Pi Honqyang is originally from China. But because of the tough competition between badminton players in her native country she chose to persue her badminton career elsewhere and moved to France. Since then she has achieved great results in prestigious international tournaments. She was a quarterfinalist at the last Olympics as well as a runner up in All England in 2007. This year she reached the semifinals in The European Champioships and Malaysia Open. She is known for her elegant and effortless style on court and is always an exciting player to watch.

MENS SINGLE

Ranking may have changed after deadline

Gade is tipped to win By Nikolaj Albrectsen

Peter Gade is the top seeded in this year’s men’s singles. He was also the favorite a year ago, but another Dane stole the picture: Jan Ø. Jørgensen is also here to grab the title.

Peter Gade, Denmark world ranking 2: The national champion of Denmark, Peter Høeg Gade, is the top favorite to come out on top after Sunday’s final in men’s singles. He is current placed second on the world ranking, which gives him the top seed in Denmark Open. Peter Gade has recently showed, he still got a very skilled play. At the World Championships in Paris in August, he brought home a bronze medal to Denmark. He was close making it to the final, Peter Gade fought bravely against Chen Jin, who is now crowned as World Champion. On home ground, Peter Gade has won Denmark Open three times. First time was in Vejle in 1998, and in fact he has made it all the way in Odense two years ago. A year ago Peter Gade had a top seed in the draw, but the Dane only made it to the quarter finals. In a rubber match, Gade was defeated by the youngster, Jan Ø. Jørgensen. With that in mind, Peter Gade must be eager to have his revenge.

Jan Ø. Jørgensen, Denmark world ranking 12: The upcoming Dane has established himself in the top of the world. A lot has already happened for the very gifted player, Jan Ø. Jørgensen: in 2009 he was close to win a medal at the World Championships in India, and at Christmas time, he won the Copenhagen Masters, the first time he ever participated. This year, Jan Ø. Jørgensen came in second in the National Championships and picked up a silver medal in the Euro’s. Currently he is the second best placed Dane on the world ranking, but he has already proved, he is able to take over, when Peter Gade retires. Last year’s Denmark Open is a clear proof: He beat Peter Gade before losing in the semi finals against Simon Santoso.

Joachim Persson, Denmark world ranking 25: Denmark Open might be the tournament where Joachim Persson will return to the top of men’s singles players. The 27-year-old Persson has dropped to a current position as 25 in the world, but just a year ago, the picture was different. At the same moment the left-handed player was a part of Top 10 in the world, and he was seeded no. 3 in the Denmark Open. But the tournament ended in the second round with a surprising upset, made by the Indian Gurusaidutt. Still, Joachim Persson has shown his potential. In French Open 2009 he played a great tournament and placed himself in the quarters against Lin Dan, who stopped the Dane’s further chances. Therefore, it must be time for Joachim Persson to regain his top level.

Taufik and co. to challenge Gade

Last year’s Indonesian winner, Simon Santoso, is not coming to defend his title. Luckily there are still very gifted players from Indonesia and the audience can look forward to see the silver medalist from World’s 2010, Taufik Hidayat. By Nikolaj Albrectsen

Taufik Hidayat, Indonesia world ranking 5: He was the biggest surprise in the men’s singles tournament at the World Championships back in August. Nobody seemed to expect Taufik Hidayat to be a real threat for the title, but he proved them wrong. The Indonesian is former world- and Olympic Champion, and he spent the summer playing tournaments – very unlike his opponents who stayed home preparing for the World’s. Still, Taufik Hidayat pulled out his A Game and found his way to the final. On the road, he beat the top favorite, Lee Chong Wei, and the strong South Korean, Park Sung Hwan. Meanwhile, he ran out of gas and was not able to put up a real fight in the final against Chen Jin. Last time Taufik visited Denmark Open was in 2007, when he was beaten in the second round by Bao Chunlai.

Boonsak Ponsana, Thailand world ranking 10: Another top 10 player is coming to Odense. The Thai has had a great season, and must be filled with confidence before his entrance in Denmark Open. During 2010 Boonsak Ponsana has been to two Super Series finals. First in Malaysia, where he beat Peter Gade in the semi final, before a quite massive loss against Lee Chong Wei. The second time was in Singapore – and just like in Malaysia, he was able to defeat Peter Gade. In the final he lost again – this time the butcher was Sony Dwi Kuncoro. Latest, Boonsak Ponsana, came in third in Japan Super Series in September, which is proving that he is one of the favorites for the title in Odense.

Kenichi Tago, Japan world ranking 13: The little Japanese fighter has improved a lot the recent year. At the same time last year, he was placed outside of Top 30 in the world, but the picture has truly changed. Kenichi Tago is storming towards Top 10 with his current rank as number 13. The results that have made this increase possible are impressive. In the Hong Kong Super Series 2009 he played his way to the semi’s where Peter Gade sent him out with two times 21-13. But in the beginning of 2010 Tago’s true highlight came. In the 100th All England Tago played amazingly and made his way to the final. It was not just the fact that he came in second, more the way he did it. First Nguyen, then the Dane Joachim Persson, before he knocked out two times China; Chen Jin and Bao Chunlai. And in the final, Tago was a danger to Lee Chong Wei who still must be happy about the close win, 21-19 and 21-19.

Pedersen/Juhl make their debut on home ground The strong new Danish couple Kamilla Rytter Juhl/Christinna Pedersen will be challenging the Asian dominance in the ladies’ doubles category. The upcoming constellation Lena Frier Kristiansen/Marie Røpke are another interesting pair to keep an eye on. By Isabella Hindkjær

Christinna Pedersen/Kamilla Rytter Juhl, Denmark World ranking: The only reason why this strong, new couple are not featured in the World Rankings is that they are yet to play a tournament together! Kamilla Rytter Juhl and Christinna Pedersen are the newest ladies’ doubles constellation. Before teaming up with Christinna Pedersen, Kamilla Rytter Juhl played with Lena Frier Kristiansen with whom she took part in the danish victory in this year’s European Team Championships. Even though Christina Pedersen and Kamilla Rytter Juhl have not played any international tournaments together before, they know each other very well. The two girls usually play tough matches against each other, as they are both part of the two best Danish mixed doubles with their respective partners Thomas Laybourn and Joachim Fischer. But as of this year’s Denmark Open they will also stand side by side competing in the big international tournaments and climbing the World Rankings together.

Lena Frier Kristiansen/Marie Røpke, Denmark World ranking: 59 Lena Frier Kristiansen and Marie Røpke have only played together for half a year but already they are showing great promise. This season they have participated in many of the Super Series tournaments and both girls contributed to the Danish team win at the European Championships earlier this year. The youngest of the two is Marie Røpke who, at only 22, has already achieved a lot. As a youth player she dominated both the national singles and doubles categories. As a senior player she chose to play doubles and has been very succesful even before she teamed up with her current partner. Along with her old partner Helle Nielsen she has reached several Super Series quarter finals and the two won the Danish Championships in ladies’ doubles back in february. This year Lena Frier Kristiansen and Marie Røpke were supposed to compete at the World Championships in August but unfortunately Lena Frier Kristiansen injured her foot. But lately she has shown that she is back and ready to show the audience world-class ladies’ doubles in Denmark Open.

Japanese couples top seeded in ladies’ doubles

With two strong Japanese couples, the ladies’ doubles category is an interesting mix of strong Asian pairs and interesting European constellations.

By Isabella Hindkjær

Maeda Miyuki/Satoko Suetsuna, Japan World ranking: 5

After years of pure Chinese dominance in ladies’ doubles Japan has proven that they are also a force to be reckoned with in this category. With two pairs in the world’s top ten they are strong favorites to take home the Denmark Open title. Maeda Miyuki/Satoko Suetsuna are currently the strongest of two top Japanese couples. Their achievements this year include several Super Series semifinals, among these the last Super Series tournament in their home country of Japan. Earlier this year Miyuki and Suetsuna obtained their best international result yet when they came second in the Swiss Open Super Series. In last year’s Denmark Open Miyuki and Suetsuna reached the quarterfinals but this year the crowd will be expecting more from them as they are the top seeded couple. As number 5 on the World Rankings they are just two spots above their fellow citizens Mizuki Fujii/Reida Kakiiwa who they could possibly meet in an all-Japanese final, if they live up to their seeding.

Petcha Nedelcheva/Anastasia Russkikh, Bulgaria/Russia World ranking: 8 Constellations across borders are quite uncommon in international badminton. Nevertheless, Bulgarian Petcha Nedelcheva and Russian Anastasia Russkikh have teamed up to form an international ladies’ doubles. And so far they have been very successful, taking home a silver medal in this year’s European Championships. Ranked 8 in the world they have reached the quarterfinals in Malaysia Open, Swiss Super Series as well as last years Denmark Open. Both players are familiar with the Danish surroundings since they both play in the Danish badminton league. Petcha Nedelcheva, who plays for Odense in the Danish team league, is a successful singles player as well and will also be participating in the ladies’ singles category in this year’s Denmark Open.

Valeria Sorokina/Nina Vislova, Russia World ranking: 9 As the reigning European Champions Valeria Sorokina and Nina Vislova are definitely among the stars in the ladies’ doubles category. This Russian couple have had a great couple of years winning Dutch Open and Welsh International in 2009. This year they continued their winning streak by winning the Russian Grand Prix on home court as well as making it to the semifinals in this year’s German Open.

First test for the new doubles

Denmark got a lot of interesting perspectives in the men’s doubles category. The favorites in Carsten Mogensen and Mathias Boe but also the showoff of the new constellations. By Nikolaj Albrectsen

Carsten Mogensen/Mathias Boe, Denmarkworld ranking 3: There is still one double left after the national coaches have split the men’s doubles. Carsten Mogensen and Mathias Boe stayed together, and therefore they are at the moment the only top pair from Denmark. Carsten and Mathias have been a part of the top 4 for a long time, and their current position as number three is based on great results from the last year. They have managed to progress to the semifinals in three Super Series tournaments during the last 12 months: In France, China and Switzerland. But in fact it was in England, they were close to bring home a Super Series title. Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen came in second after a thrilling game against Rasmussen/Paaske where both pairs had match points. But Carsten and Mathias have won two titles this year. Besides their National Championship, they won the Bitburger Open just after the World Championships in Paris. Last time the Danish champions played Denmark Open they were one match from winning the title, but lost the final in three sets.

Jonas Rasmussen/Mads Conrad-Petersen, Denmark: There has been a lot of talking about this new double. But finally Jonas Rasmussen and Mads Conrad got the chance to show their potential on home ground. After Lars Paaske’s retirement, the former world champion, Jonas Rasmussen, needed a new partner. The coaches wanted to find a young player, who Jonas Rasmussen should be a kind of mentor for. The very talented Mads Conrad was the choice, and it is not only Jonas Rasmussen who has a great history. Mads Conrad won four titles the last year in men’s doubles with his old partner, Mads Kolding. But Conrad and Rasmussen already had their debut in three friendly matches against Germany, where Jonas and Mads won two out of three matches.

Rasmus Bonde/Anders Kristiansen, Denmark: Another new Danish double is Rasmus Bonde and Anders Kristiansen. Anders has been playing with Kasper Henriksen the last year and the double did well. In last year’s Denmark Open they were close to make it to the semifinals and in the European Championship the brought home a bronze medal. Rasmus Bonde was injured during the national championships back in February – he was about to become Danish Champion in mixed doubles, but lost the final and some of the spring was destroyed due to the injury. Now he is back with Anders Kristiansen and they create one more great Danish double.

The Indonesians is coming!

Indonesia sends the best: two of the best foreigner doubles are from Indonesia and both pairs are ready for a long week in Odense.

By Nikolaj Albrectsen

Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan, Indonesia world ranking 2: They are former Olympic Champions as well as former World Champions – they won the World’s back in 2007 in Malaysia, but since that victory, they have not succeeded in winning the major titles. Still Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan are two top players and the favorites to the title in Denmark Open. But it is almost a year since their last Super Series win – French Super Series 2009. Markis Kido has been injured, but they have been able to pick up good results. Two semifinals in Super Series events and back in august they could return to Indonesia with a bronze medal after the World Championships. The Indonesian pair has had success in Denmark earlier in their career: Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan won the Denmark Open in 2008 and they must be keen to repeat that act.

Hendra Gunawan/Alvent Chandra, Indonesia world ranking 9: One of the other top ranked pairs is also Indonesian, Hendra Gunawan and Alvent Chandra. Earlier this year the Indonesians climbed the ranking and placed themselves on 5th place – a clear sign of their quality. The past year has given them two second places in tournaments, Malaysia Grand Prix and Macau Open. But on the big Super Series circuit, Gunawan and Chandra have not been able to proceed to the finals. Their best result came in Malaysia Super Series, where they were defeated in the semifinals by Gu Zhengdong and Xu Chen. Last year’s Denmark Open was a huge failure for the pair. Despite their fifth seed, they lost in the opening round against Simon Mollyhus and Rasmus Bonde.

Hirokatsu Hashimoto/Noriyasu Hirata, Japan world ranking 10: The current rank gives them a ticket to the Wolrd’s Top 10, and that is the highest placing ever for Hashimoto and Hirata. They climbed 18 places in one year and the reason is quite obvious: a breakthrough and consistent play by the Japanese. They also visited Odense in last year’s Denmark Open, where they lost against Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen in the second round. But the best result this year was in the Indonesia Super Series. Even though they lost the semifinal the badminton world got their eyes opened afterwards. Especially because of their quarter final win against number 1 in the world, Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong.
