It’s possible with intelligent and connected e-pumps and systems

Industry applications consume too much energy. Take pumps, for example: They account for 25% of all electricity consumed by industrial electrical motors.** That’s a hard fact, but it doesn’t have to be that way – there’s an intelligent answer. If we use intelligent, connected and energy-efficient pump solutions and systems, it’s possible to reduce energy consumption by as much as 37%. At Grundfos, we offer a complete range of solutions that can help reduce energy use and emissions across a range of industrial processes. From cooling and water treatment to water reuse and ultra-clean water, you can start saving energy today.

Hard energy facts. Intelligent answers.

Let us all continue the badminton party on Danish soil

Dear all members of the badminton family around the world.

On behalf of Badminton Denmark, I am honoured and proud to welcome you to VICTOR DENMARK OPEN 2023.

It hasn’t been a long time since we had a great badminton party in Royal Arena in Copenhagen hosting the TotalEnergies BWF World Championships 2023. Now we are back hosting VICTOR DENMARK OPEN 2023.

This tournament is the world’s second oldest international badminton tournament. The first edition was played in 1936 in Copenhagen. Now we are for the second time in Jyske Bank Arena in Odense after being in Odense Sports Park for 13 years in a row. It was a big success being in Jyske Bank Arena last year, and I hope we can continue the success in the arena, where the tournament will be held until 2026. We have once again tried to make the experience for all even better than last year, and I am confident that this will succeed.

Without doubt this couldn’t happen without our great co-operation with our event partners Odense Municipality, Destination Fyn, Visit Odense and our main sponsor VICTOR. I look forward to the co-operation in the coming years.

During the tournament week, Badminton Denmark is also hosting a huge youth tournament for players of all ages in the City of Odense. Thank you to the many youth players and their parents for making the tournament special, and a big welcome to the many youth players coming from abroad. You are all contributing to making this badminton week extra special.

A big and humble thank you for making this tournament possible to the fantastic spectators and the many volunteers – you are all truly appreciated.

Welcome to the players, coaches, officials, and staff – let’s have another fantastic badminton party here in Denmark.

Welcome to VICTOR DENMARK OPEN 2023

The annual VICTOR DENMARK OPEN will once again take place in Denmark’s third largest city, Odense. It’s 87 years since this great tournament was created which makes it one of the oldest international badminton tournaments in the world. As it has been for the last fifteen years, Odense will host this huge celebration of sportsmanship and talent. To host an event on this scale is a great honor for the whole city, but also for me as a mayor. I am very delighted to welcome you here in Odense for six great days with badminton.

Last year marked a huge change. After thirteen years at Odense Sports Park, VICTOR DENMARK OPEN took place at Jyske Bank Arena for the first time. For this year, Jyske Bank Arena will once again provide the framework for interesting duels and well performed techniques across the court. The arena is the biggest stage in Odense, and this fact validates the increased interest there have been in badminton. It is great for the sport, and it is great for Odense.

Although Denmark has a long tradition within the world of badminton, it is particularly strong in Odense. For the past years, Viktor Axelsen has been a part of the absolute top among badminton players in the whole world. He is one of our own which of course is something that we are very proud of. To see how Viktor has developed is a true fairytale. He learned to play badminton in Odense, and now we once again get to host him and many other memorable players from around the world.

VICTOR DENMARK OPEN is capable of many things. First, it makes it possible for enthusiasts to see the best players duel against each other. To see your biggest badminton idol, play with both precision and finesse - that is something every fan loves to see. Secondly, it makes people from all over the world gather in Odense with one common purpose: to watch badminton! That is one of my favorite things about sport.

But VICTOR DENMARK OPEN is also inviting you into a developing city both known for its cultural and historical attractions. In the beginning of the year New York Times pointed towards Odense on their list of ’52 places to go in 2023’. As the hometown of fairy tale writer Hans Christian Andersen, the world’s leading robotics hub and with a wide range of historic elements there is much to do on your visit in vibrant Odense. We offer gastronomic experiences, cultural attractions, and events in an urban environment with elements of historic charm and modern architecture side by side. It is important to us that there is plenty to see and do in Odense, so I hope you will have a great time in Odense in between the nerve-racking duels.

Welcome to VICTOR DENMARK OPEN 2023 and welcome to Odense.

GREENER FEATHER

Together, we make VICTOR DENMARK OPEN greener. We recycle, sort waste, and choose green solutions to make the most positive impact possible. You can help us by driving and eating greener and sorting your waste.

More waste sorting and recycling

We make an effort to sort waste and recycle at VICTOR DENMARK OPEN. We have a special focus on avoiding plastic waste and collecting plastic bottles for recycling. To recycle as much waste as possible, we have set up waste stations in the arena. Thank you for sorting your waste!

More reuse - less consumption

We aim to reuse as much as possible and discard as little as possible at VICTOR DENMARK OPEN. Both banners, flooring, and clothing are reused after the tournament. Furthermore, the shuttlecock’s journey does not come to an end when the players want a new one. They are collected and continue their journey in the local clubs that have volunteered during the tournament.

More climate-friendly food

The food we serve at VICTOR DENMARK OPEN is more climate-friendly than usual. We offer fewer meat-dishes and more meat-free options for players, volunteers, and spectators. The ingredients are as local as possible and arrive at the arena in electric vehicles.

More sustainable transportation

We are pleased to gather so many people for VICTOR DENMARK OPEN, but the carbon dioxide emissions increase when many people drive. Your choice of transportation helps reduce the carbon footprint. Thanks to you who cycle, take the tram, train, or bus.

Greener accommodation

Even when we sleep, we do what we can to contribute to the green transition. VICTOR DENMARK OPEN exclusively collaborates with hotels that are environmentally certified, such as The Nordic Swan Ecolabel or Green Key. We have already achieved that all players, officials, and delegates stay at environmentally certified hotels. Thank you for thinking green when booking accommodation.

Local club plays an important role in the organization of VICTOR DENMARK OPEN

On the Danish island of Funen, badminton traditions are kept alive with Odense Badminton Club as a beacon in the sports community.

Badminton in the town of H.C. Andersen is characterized first and foremost by talent factory Odense Badminton Club, commonly known as OBK.

Many of the country’s greatest badminton players, past and present, made their first stabs at the sport of shuttlecock in the OBK hall at Godthåbsgade in central Odense.

Players such as Frederik Søgaard, Maiken Fruergaard, William Kryger Boe, Mathias Boe, and double world champion and Olympic gold medallist Viktor Axelsen all started their badminton careers in the long-established, traditional badminton club.

OBK takes great pride in getting its talents into the senior teams and league team, which are OBK’s flagships, an initiative and talent development strategy dubbed Made in Odense.

OBK upholds a proud tradition of talent development and a serious approach to training and development of both players and coaches. Odense Badminton Klub is the largest badminton club on Funen, and it still sees a high demand for the sport. The hall at Godthåbsgade isn’t the country’s largest, and although OBK is for both small and tall members, the capacity of the club has its limits.

22 BADMINTON DANMARK | VICTOR DENMARK OPEN 2023

OBK has taken on the role of helping with knowledge and experience sharing of good talent development environments across Funen and acts as a support structure for badminton across the island.

OBK’s chairman of the board, Henrik Kryger, said, “OBK has 600 members, and we are at capacity. One of the tasks we’ve taken on as the ‘big brother’ on the island is to inform and articulate that there are other clubs than OBK that produce excellent badminton players and with whom we have really good partnerships and training collaborations, especially on the coaching side. These collaborations have been supported and facilitated by Odense Municipality, Badminton Fyn, and Badminton Denmark.

Examples include joint training sessions in Elitetalentcenter Fyn based in Odense Idrætshal, but also continuing education of coaches from 8-10 clubs on Funen. So instead of competing with, or stealing, each other’s players, there’s a kind of ‘gentlemen’s agreement’ that allows for positive cooperation between clubs across Funen.”

Henrik Kryger is confident that badminton in both OBK and the rest of Odense is currently in a good place. There’s room for those who enjoy the shuttlecock sport on a recreational basis and the few who can drive badminton to something bigger and maybe even a career.

He said, “Since we’ve organized the setup with Badminton Denmark for the very best in Elitetalentcenter Fyn, there’s room for the second best in the club.”

Henrik continued to elaborate: “In addition to being elite and creating the opportunity for youth players to go all the way, we also want to create a good youth environment in the club and create a place where people can come and get to know other nice people.”

The joy of badminton is what matters most to Henrik Kryger and OBK, and part of the joy of being a member of the club and the badminton community in Odense is the annual Super 750 tournament VICTOR DENMARK OPEN.

OBK is one of the driving forces behind the big badminton event in Jyske Bank Arena, which has been held year after year in Odense since 2007.

The chairman said, “Denmark Open provides cohesion in a club like OBK, as we need between 200 and 250 volunteers. OBK is responsible for all practical matters, and volunteering generates a great sense of cohesion in the club. Parents, youth players, veterans, seniors, people from all walks of life come to assist us in organizing the event. Sometimes, we also need help from our partner clubs from all over Funen, and the clubs are kind enough to help out and take shifts. We’re very grateful for that. There’s great pride in being part of such a big event.”

In addition to Henrik Kryger and the rest of OBK, as well as Badminton Denmark and the other clubs on Funen, demonstrating that they organize and run a big event smoothly, it’s the experiences for the volunteers, especially young volunteers, that make Denmark Open presented by Victor such a special experience for everyone associated with OBK.

“Our young players can come out and get first-hand experience,” said Henrik Kryger. “In our own hall, we’ve organized a series of side activities in connection with Denmark Open, including youth tournaments. We’ve hosted a tournament for the best U19 players in Europe. When they’re not helping out, they’re playing badminton in the halls.”

The event promises to be a week-long celebration of badminton, where both audience and volunteers can watch badminton at the highest level and get close to elite players at this year’s VICTOR DENMARK OPEN 2023.

23 VICTOR DENMARK OPEN 2023 | BADMINTON DANMARK

“I’d like to have Viktor Axelsen’s and Lee Zii Jia’s decisive weapon”

Magnus Johannesen has set his sights on the world’s top rankings and makes his debut this week at VICTOR DENMARK OPEN 2023.

In less than a year, Magnus Johannesen has climbed 60 places in the world rankings and is now positioned to enter all tournaments against the world’s best men’s singles players. Among them are Viktor Axelsen and Lee Zii Jia, and they possess a weapon Johannesen would like to add to his set of skills.

“It would be nice to be able to smash as hard as them. I’d like to have a decisive weapon like that,” says the 21-year-old Dane.

He hopes to be able to develop a more definite smash but recognizes that it won’t ever be quite as good as Viktor

Axelsen and Lee Zii Jia’s due to physiological reasons.

Magnus Johannesen explained, ”It’s simply not possible to attain their level of attack. In part, because they’re taller than me and can stroke from a steeper angle. But I’m training several attack variations

24 VICTOR DENMARK OPEN 2023 | Mens’s Singles

that make the strokes appear similar and make it harder for the opponents to read where the shuttle is headed.”

While his height may be against him compared to the two top players, he is training to optimize his smash as much as possible to generate more force through his arm.

Johannesen said, “You can train the technical part and the whole timing of when to relax the body and when to engage the right muscles to gain as much power in the body as possible. You can definitely achieve some percentages that way.”

After all, when he’s made it this far up the rankings, it’s because he has excellent qualities that make him difficult to beat for his opponents.

“I see myself as a confident player who’s good at reading the game,” he explained. “Since I’m not the largest player and don’t take up much space on the court, it’s important to be able to read the game well and be confident in my play. I also see myself as a player who can play at a high tempo for a long time and wear out my opponent. And I don’t give away too many chances. I’d say those are my biggest strengths.”

In the fall of 2022, the men’s singles player won the Irish Open challenge tournament, and in the spring of 2023, Magnus Johannesen reached the final of the Super 300 tournament Orleans Masters. He also reached the quarterfinals at the Super 500 tournament Canada Open this summer, and in September he participated for the first time in a Super

1000 tournament at the China Open. This week, he will make his debut at VICTOR DENMARK OPEN 2023.

“The variation and masking of

her strokes make her hard to

read”

Line Christophersen’s strengths are speed and power,

26 VICTOR DENMARK OPEN 2023 | Women’s Singles

She said, “I would love to have Tai Tzu Ying’s technique. It’s incredibly smooth. She is both good at smashing the shuttle but also exceptionally good at making softer, masked strokes.”

The 23-year-old Dane has faced the sixyears-older opponent twice – and lost twice in two sets. However, there is certainly no shame in that when you consider the Chinese Taipei player’s track record: three-time All England winner, gold at three Asian Championships, gold at the Asian Games, World Cup silver and Olympic silver.

Titles are one thing, but in terms of technique, she may be among the world’s best women’s singles players ever.

“She’s good at keeping up and using variety in her strokes, which makes her incredibly hard to read,” Christophersen explained. “It’s difficult to imitate becau-

se it requires you to be very relaxed while having exceptional command of the shuttle.”

Since November 2022, additional technique training sessions have been introduced at the Danish national team. According to the women’s singles player, this is needed in order to create the time and space to experiment with technique.

Christophersen pointed out, “To achieve a better technique, you need lots of practice with lots of strokes and attempts to try out something different. It’s okay to try something new and to play around in a technique session, where everything doesn’t necessarily have to be so neat.”

While the technical aspects are something Line Christophersen wants to improve, there are also other areas she is working on mastering.

“My speed and power are definitely some of my greatest strengths,’ she explained. ‘From here, it’s a matter of mastering them and using them in the right way so I’m not just playing at a high pace all the time. I need to work on making some tempo changes that can hurt the opponent a little more.”

High baseline and consistent control are the keys to success

The men’s doubles category at the VICTOR DENMARK OPEN 2023 is bursting with talented pairs who are fit to go all the way. Pointing out a single duo from the crowd has never been more challenging.

30 VICTOR DENMARK OPEN 2023 | Men’s Doubles

About the strong field of skilled men’s doubles, he stated, “In general, for the couples who are part of the conversation of being the world’s best, it’s the ability to play the right shuttle. It’s not enough to do it once, twice or three times. You have to be able to sustain it

When asked to highlight a single duo with the necessary qualities to beat any of the skilled doubles pairs, Rasmus Kjær pointed to the newly-announced, Korean world champions from Royal Arena: Kang Min Hyuk and Seo Seung Jae.

Of them, Rasmus said, “Their talent is high-quality play many times in a row. It isn’t necessarily exceptional strokes that you notice, but the ability to get a great number of shuttles over the net through high-quality play. Their consistency is incredibly high.”

Rasmus Kjær and Frederik Søgaard can see themselves in the Korean pair and are practicing playing with more energy, dominance, and shuttle control, even when the matches are long and close. The Danish men’s doubles duo is a pairing in which neither of the two have a predominant strength that limits their

game. Instead, their pairing allows for rotation, and their play can switch seamlessly throughout the match.

“I see us as a very dynamic men’s doubles pair,” said Rasmus Kjær. “We’re not a duo that’s limited by, for instance, having me positioned behind and Frederik in front or vice versa. We can both play all positions on the court, which is very useful in combination with the fact that we’re both very agile, so when we play well, we cover each other well and have a lot of useful rotation, which puts pressure on the opponent.”

There are several reasons why the Chinese women’s duo, 26-year-old Chen Qing Chen and 26-year-old Jia Yi Fan, are four-time world champions and world number one. According to Maiken Fruergaard, there is one aspect in particular where they outplay the rest of the duos at the top of the world rankings.

The 28-year-old Fruergaard pointed out, ”They’re incredibly poisonous in serve situations, and there’s definitely an X-factor to it. Especially when they make the serve, they get a lot of points. Jia, for instance, has an incredible flick serve that’s hard to read, and therefore hurts to receive. The other Asian couples’ serves

are more standard, which make them less dangerous.”

She is speaking from experience. She’s played against the Chinese duo with her partner, Sara Thygesen, eight times without a victory. In each match, the serve has been particularly troublesome for the Danes.

“They’re good at setting up traps that are easy to fall into”
According to Danish women’s doubles player Maiken Fruergaard, the serve has been particularly challenging for her and Sara Thygesen when they have played against the world champions.

“I don’t know if it has to do with the fact that one is left-handed and the other right-handed. In any case, they’re good at covering each other and being very aggressive. If you make a return of serve that’s a little too passive, you’re going to get it right back in your face.”

“The court feels very small when you play against them, because there’s almost nothing you can do but return the shuttle upwards, and especially Jia’s stroke is so powerful that she can more or less hit the shuttle to wherever she wants and punish you for a poor return,” Fruergaard said in recognition of her opponent. “And they’re good at setting up traps that are easy to fall into. That’s something I wish we could bring to our own game.”

The serve is otherwise an element that she and Thygesen also master well, especially when they have the serve.

The Danish women’s doubles player said, “We’re fairly good at setting up similar situations when we have the serve, but Chen and Jia are simply far more poisonous, also when the return the serve, than us. There’s a big difference here between our serves and our return of serves, whereas they master both.”

Besides the World Championships in Copenhagen, Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan also won the Super 1000 tournaments Malaysia Open and China Open this year, the Super 750 tournament Singapore Open, the Super 500 tournament Korea Open, and played in two more finals.

While they have a certain X-factor when it comes to serves, Fruergaard emphasized that it isn’t the full of extent of why the Chinese duo dominates the World Tour.

“Their aggressive and explosive handling of the shuttle means they’re able to stroke hard, but also that they’re quite fast. This is a skill that’s developed through weight training as well as on the court. But they excel at more things than just their serves. There’s a reason they’re the world’s best women’s doubles duo.”

“Her confidence and ability to make points is very unique”

38 VICTOR DENMARK OPEN 2023 | Mixed Doubles

Magelund said, “Her confidence and ability to make points is very unique, both at the net and when she serves. There aren’t too many others who master it to that degree, and she also has a good eye for the game, which benefits her partner a lot, no matter who she plays with.”

The Danish mixed doubles player is referring to the fact that Huang Ya Qiong, in early 2022 after a disappointing Olympic and World Championship with Zheng Si Wei, was paired with Ou Xuan Yi. The pair managed to play their way to the finals of the Super 300 tournaments German Open and Korea Masters, after which she was partnered with Zheng Si Wei again.

“She’s at such a high level that she can pull up other players that aren’t as skilled at mixed doubles and make the duo competitive,” Magelund explained.

The Chinese player has become a personal reference point for Magelund when developing her own game on court. According to Magelund, the two players aren’t that different in terms of style.

The 23-year-old Dane said, “We’re somewhat similar. We’re both very aggressive and track and seek the shuttle at the net. In that way, we’re very similar, and I can mirror myself in her and take some pointers.”

Amalie Magelund and partner Mathias

Thyrri have yet to reach the good spots at the top of the rankings, but in the past year, they’ve moved further up after winning the Canadian International Challenge and reaching the finals of the Super 500 tournament Canada Open and the Super 300 tournament US Open.

Against the world champions, they’ve come up short all four times they’ve faced each other this year. The Danes have been successful, however, in scoring many of their own points against them, which is one of the duo’s strengths, according to Magelund.

She said, “When playing against them, nothing is handed to you. You have to score the points yourself, and I think we’re good at that. Once we go on the offensive, it can be difficult for other duos to get out of it. That’s where we can really make our own points, and I also think we make a strong serve, which lets us take some quick points.”

‘Thank you for everything you’ve given to Danish badminton.’ This was spoken in the speech made to Hans-Kristian Solberg Vittinghus when he officially retired from the national team on 30 August. Over 50 players, coaches, and colleagues were there to celebrate him, and it’s easy to understand why.

Vittinghus has both entertained and been a role model for badminton enthusiasts, and he has been celebrated nationally and internationally for his talent and character.

About the last official training session, Hans-Kristian Vittinghus said, “It was obviously very moving. I was looking forward to it, but I was also looking forward to it being over, because I’m a relatively sensitive person. I was very aware that the emotions would hit me. And they did.”

However, his journey started in a slightly different place.

Creeping sense of awe

Hans-Kristian Solberg Vittinghus, popularly known as HK, officially started training with the national team in 2005, but he was introduced to the national team in 2004 when he and other talents were allowed to train with the team. Back then, he already had big goals for his badminton career. He wanted to become one

of the world’s best and to compete in the Thomas Cup, the Olympics, and AllEngland.

Training with the national team, however, led to a period of adjustment for the then 19-year-old talent.

He recalled, “I distinctly remember that when Kenneth Jonassen, Peter Gade, Jens Eriksen, and Martin Lundgaard trained after us, they often sat and laughed. At the time, I thought they were probably laughing at us. I wasn’t anywhere near their level, so that sensation never left me back then.”

The contrast between club training and national team training was noticeable. There was a different kind of seriousness to the way things were done.

Vittinghus eagerly continued his training despite the new training environment among established names. The results he expected didn’t materialize until a trip to Norway in 2006.

Drunkenness in Iceland and redemption in Norway

Ever since Hans-Kristian Vittinghus started training with the team, the first and second rounds were often his last at international tournaments. Then, at the Norwegian International in 2006, something changed. The explanation

for this can be found at a tournament in Iceland.

“I had played a tournament in Iceland the week before where I just had to get past the second round,” Vittinghus recalled.

It didn’t go according to plan, however, and he ended up losing the second round. This defeat triggered dark thoughts in the young Dane.

“I remember thinking, it doesn’t even really matter anymore. I went out that night to get drunk with the others,” Vittinghus says.

As fate would have it, Vittinghus travelled to Norway the following week, where he managed to advance from the second round for the first time. And then some. After the final match was over, he was standing at the top of the podium after facing considerable opposition along the way.

“I played insanely well,” Vittinghus explained. “I was ranked 137 in the world and won against Muhammad Roslin Hashim, who was once ranked no. 1. It was a huge release to finally be able to demonstrate the potential I knew I had. I curbed some of my expectations and went into the tournament with a different mindset.”

Danish Hans-Kristian Solberg Vittinghus’ life in badminton has been full of career-defining and entertaining moments. He is not quite done with the joys of the sport yet.
>> 43 VICTOR DENMARK OPEN 2023 | BADMINTON DANMARK
“I find it very hard to imagine not being part of the badminton world for the rest of my life”

With this victory, Vittinghus’ international career was born. As the years went by, he rose in the world rankings and made his breakthrough in 2011 with a victory at the Bitburger Open. Yet according to him, his greatest achievements on a badminton court are all to be found in 2016.

A complicated relationship with the Thomas Cup

Most badminton enthusiasts will remember the day the Danish men’s national team took the gold medal at the Thomas Cup in 2016. Hans-Kristian Vittinghus was responsible for the final victory over Indonesia, which resulted in a 3-2 win for Denmark.

The Thomas Cup had always been high on Hans-Kristian Vittinghus’ list of championships he wanted to compete in, but in the previous years he was unable to perform at his best.

He said, “Prior to 2016, I had a pretty bad relationship with the championship. The first time I was selected, I got blood poisoning in my leg. The second time, I got a back injury that prevented me from being in good shape. And in 2014, I went almost without having trained. That’s why a huge stone fell from my heart when we triumphed.”

The story of 2016 ended happily for the Danes. Vittinghus played a crucial role in more than just the finals. In the quarterfinals against Japan and the semifinals against Malaysia, he had to win. Otherwise, Denmark was out. The significance of this championship for the Dane made the victory the biggest of his career.

Greatest individual victory

Vittinghus’ greatest individual victory also took place in 2016 when he won the Australian Open. International elite players, such as Anthony Ginting and Chen Long, were competing in the tournament, but in Australia, they didn’t have what it took to reach the final against HansKristian Vittinghus. The then 30-year-old Dane won the final against Korean Jeon Hyeok Jin and beat other top players along the way.

He holds this tournament victory in high regard.

“I just played incredibly well. I beat some really good opponents and honed in on the opportunity that arose in the draws when Chen Long was eliminated. You could also say, in terms of hierarchy, that this is the biggest tournament I’ve won by far,” he said.

The size of the tournament and the greatest year in badminton Hans-Kristian Vittinghus regards AllEngland as one of the biggest tournaments, even bigger than the World Championships, so it was a big deal when he reached the semifinals of the tournament in 2016. It completed the greatest year in badminton in his career.

However, just as in Norway, the run-up to the tournament wasn’t ideal for the Dane. Once again, the question of expectations reared its head before the first game.

“I had just returned from a heel injury that had kept me out for much of 2015. I didn’t go into All England with high expectations,” the Dane explained.

Despite the low expectations at the time, it’s a performance and tournament HansKristian Vittinghus is proud of.

He beat players such as Wang Zhengming, Sai Praneeth, and Marc Zwiebler. In the semifinals, Tian Houwei overpowered the Danish player in three sets.

“Viewed in terms of levels, it’s probably the best tournament I’ve played, because I beat top-10 players in a tournament

44 BADMINTON DANMARK | VICTOR DENMARK OPEN 2023

where everyone came in their best shape,” Vittinghus said.

More badminton projects on the horizon

Badminton has been a big part of the now 37-year-old Hans-Kristian Vittinghus’ life. His career has included travelling, daily training, tournaments, championships, team matches, and everything in between.

But what does everyday life look like now? Well, there’s a recurring theme.

Since his last official training session, Vittinghus has been working on several badminton-related projects. He is currently working on two podcast projects, he is involved in FZ Forza’s social media profiles, he serves as a senior coach at badminton club Hvidovre, which may lead to a coaching career – and he is working on club visits around the country. As if that wasn’t enough for the badminton-loving Dane, he still plays team matches in Denmark and France, and will continue to do so for as long as his body can handle the gruelling men’s singles category.

“I find it very hard to imagine not being part of the badminton world for the rest of my life. I’m a huge badminton nerd,” he stated.

There’s no question that the sport of badminton has a special place in Vittinghus’ heart.

“It’s almost like a family”

In Denmark, volunteers play a crucial role at badminton tournaments. For some, it’s about setting up the courts in the arena, for others it’s about serving the players, and for a third group it’s about having sharp eyes and clear communication throughout the week. The latter cate gory belongs to the line judges, such as 38-year-old Helle Svedborg. She made her debut last year at VICTOR DENMARK OPEN.

“It was a crazy experience with so many people and a huge setup. The first day

From morning to evening, the line judges are at work at VICTOR DENMARK OPEN. We spoke to two of them about the great sense of community among the line judges and referees.
48 BADMINTON DANMARK | VICTOR DENMARK OPEN 2023

is a bit hectic until you get to know everything. Other than that, it was an awesome experience,” recalled Helle Svedborg, who also participated as a line judge at the World Championships at Royal Arena and now at this year’s VICTOR DENMARK OPEN 2023.

“One of my reasons for participating is that it’s a really good time. It’s almost like a summer camp for line judges, because you spend such an intense week together.”

While serving as a line judge, Helle Svedborg got to know 36-year-old Lærke Olsen. She is a trained referee and has participated at VICTOR DENMARK OPEN since 2012. Her work as a referee stopped when COVID-19 hit, and she has since thrown her passion into line judging.

Lærke Olsen said, “It’s almost like a family. You look forward to seeing people every single time. It’s not just a community for the Danish referees or line judges, but just as much for all the people we meet from other countries. It’s a unique

social bond where everyone is on an equal footing and has a lot of fun.”

For Helle Svedborg, becoming a line judge was an opportunity to have a badminton community after surgeries put an end to her days on the badminton court.

“I was at an event where I heard that there was a shortage of line judges,’ she said, ‘so I wrote to the people in charge, and at Final 4 last year, I got the opportunity to try it out. It was so much fun, and I felt welcomed as a newcomer.”

One of the people who welcomed her was Lærke Olsen, and she gave her some good advice to help her along the way.

Helle Svedborg explained, “They’re really good, experienced people who can offer help and tell you how to go about it. I also received guidance from Lærke, who told me to shout louder, even if it felt like I was already shouting loudly from the line. All the little things you don’t

notice when you’re trying it for the first time.”

For anyone who is thinking about becoming a line judge at badminton tournaments, there is only one piece of advice, according to Lærke Olsen.

“Just go for it and give it a try, even if you’re nervous,” she said. “The rest of us are also a bit jittery before the first match until we’ve made a call on the line. It’s hard work because you’re sitting there most of the day, but it’s a lot of fun. Give it a try, and you’ll know when you’re sitting on the line if it’s for you.”

FAIRPLAY I BADMINTON
