WELCOME TO YONEX DENMARK OPEN This week Badminton Denmark is re-lightening the Olympic fire in Odense and we are proud to present all the stars from London. The Olympics was a great victory for Danish Badminton - not only for the players who won a medal but for all of Badminton Denmark. I am – both personal and as President - very proud of the result. It gives us a strong faith for the future of Badminton Denmark. Peter Gade is sadly not a part of that future since this will be his last Yonex Denmark Open. But he is and has been a fantastic ambassador for Danish badminton and is a role model for many young players. Badminton Denmark will officially say goodbye and honor him at Yonex Copenhagen Masters. Odense Municipality and our prime sponsor Yonex play a vital role hosting one of the World’s biggest tournaments like a Premier Superseries. Sport Event Denmark is another major actor in ensuring the prize money needed to meet the demands of the BWF. Hosting this major event also gives the Danish fans an opportunity to meet all the stars and it also provides the Danish top players a yearly chance to play on home soil. As a special feature You can follow the Yonex Denmark Open 2012 on the BWF YouTube channel commentated by former National Coach Steen Pedersen and of course we keep you updated on our websites and social sites.

Peter Jensen

Vital is also the Danish club culture and all the volunteers from Odense Badminton Club. They use their spare time to support Badminton Denmark professional staff to carry out Yonex Denmark Open. On behalf of Badminton Denmark I thank them with all of my heart. And in the same breath I would like to advertise for being a Volunteer in the World Championships 2014 in Copenhagen. We will need a lot of hands to make the Championships the greatest ever. At last but not least I have a special appreciation to all our other solid partners: FUN, OK, Holsterbro RejseCenter, TV2 SPORT, EKJ Fonden, Rema 1000, Børnehjælpsdagen, Diabetesforeningen - and those specifically related to the Yonex Denmark Open: Citroen, Carl Hansen & Søn, Udvikling Fyn, Fyens Stiftstidende, BWF and Osim. Let the Premier Superseries show begin!

WELCOME TO YONEX DENMARK OPEN On behalf of the city of Odense it is a great pleasure to welcome you all to the Danish part of the international Superseries in badminton, Yonex Denmark Open 2012. The area of sports is very much prioritized by the city of Odense. I therefore would like to thank especially Badminton Denmark, Development Funen and all the volunteers from our local club Odense Badminton Club, who make this event possible. To host big sports events in Odense does not only stimulate the public interest for sports and exercise in all; it also makes it possible on close hand to experience sport in the absolute elite – some times even world class. With the “Premier” title this Yonex Denmark Open event is no exception; it is with no doubt the best badminton players of the world, who visit Odense to compete for the prestigious glory and title of this tournament.

Anker Boye

With this year, Yonex Denmark Open has been held in Odense six times, and since the beginning in 2007, it has become an event that Odense – and Funen – is proud of and an event that really places Odense on the international sports scene. By hosting this event, we are automatically compared with big cities like Paris, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore and Hong Kong – cities which normally get much more international attention than our city. We have to cherish this attention by trying to be an innovative and farsighted city, which sees big sports events as an important attraction and an asset for the citizens, so we can stand out as a unique city. Therefore, it is of great importance for the city of Odense that the city council has chosen to set funds aside to a new 4 yearlong contract with Badminton Denmark for the Denmark Open 2014-2017. Will Odense be host yet another period from 2014, the city has 5 additional years to exploit the potentials of the event regarding publicity, tourism and commercial initiatives. Therefore, the scene for a fantastic and exiting event is definitely set for both participants and spectators – I know Badminton Denmark, the City of Odense and the volunteers will certainly do anything we can, to make this event a success in every way. Once again welcome to Odense, have a pleasant time and good luck to all the participants.

Anker Boye Mayor, Odense City

WELCOME TO YONEX DENMARK OPEN Firstly, I would like to extend my warmest welcome to each and everyone of you to the YONEX Denmark Open Superseries Premier 2012 at Odense Sports Park, Odense. Having taken over as the title sponsors of this event last year, it gives me great pleasure that this relationship has continued again for 2012. WELCOME TO ODENSE! The penultimate leg of the OSIM BWF World Superseries Premier has been billed as a tournament to “Meet the Stars” and I firmly believe this is an apt description of the Premier events. Thanks to the support of the players and Member Associations, we have seen most of the top players in action at each Premier tournament and this has largely contributed to the success of the OSIM BWF World Superseries season this year. The recent Olympic Games in London were a great success. It was played to a global audience that gave our sport the opportunity to be seen by many new viewers and attract new fans. As such it is imperative that we, from the administrators of the sport to the players and officials, always uphold the spirit of sportsmanship and fair play in showcasing our sport to the world for what it truly is – a dynamic and fascinating sport. As stakeholders in the sport, this is our duty and responsibility. The 12 Superseries events and two BWF Major events in 2011 were broadcast to 164 countries compared to 33 in 2009 while the number of broadcast hours increased from 1500 hours to 6769 hours and this is a positive development for our sport.

Dr. Kang Young Joong

I would also like to thank Badminton Denmark who have embraced the challenge to increase the prize money by offering USD 400,000. I also want to thank OSIM, our Superseries global sponsor, who have been a strong partner of the BWF in bringing you the Superseries. A big thank you also goes out to the title sponsor YONEX for providing the financial support to host an event of such magnitude. YONEX has been a great partner of the Yonex Denmark Open and badminton in general and their contribution is much appreciated. To all the other supporting partners and sponsors, our grateful thanks to you as well. Last but not least, my sincere appreciation goes out to the technical officials, media, volunteers and fans who have given their wholehearted support to badminton and particularly to the OSIM BWF World Superseries. Thank you to all of you.

EVENTYRET

ADVENTURE

AWAITS ON FUNEN

You can’t say Funen without also saying Hans Christian Andersen. And when you visit Funen, you can plainly see how the famous author was inspired to write many of his famous fairy tales. The island is a cornucopia of adventure - whether you are island hopping in the South Funen archipelago, visiting Egeskov Castle or exploring Odense, the ‘capital’ of Funen. ADVENTURE BEGINS IN ODENSE Odense is the central island hub, and it unites the cosy Funen charm and atmosphere with a big city ambience and experience. You can always find an interesting exhibition, a big-name concert or a fun attraction for the whole family. The lively market streets in the city centre invites you to go treasure hunting in the small, unique designer shops or sit down at one of the cafés and take in the city’s history. Hans Christian Andersen’s home, the Tinderbox, a cultural centre for children, and the Danish Railway Museum are all within walking distance from the pedestrian street as well as the train station. Nearby you can go for a boat ride down Odense River towards Denmark’s friendliest ZOO.

FACTS ABOUT FUNEN • • • • • • • •

Denmark’s second largest island About 450,000 residents 2,984 km2 1130 km coastline 1175 km of marked cycling trails 200 km long hiking trail 123 castles and manors 13 golf courses

FUNEN – A PARADISE FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY Just outside Odense, the green isle beckons with its child friendly beaches in every direction, it’s many camp sites with water parks and playgrounds, as well as plenty of activities for children and families. Try feeding a giraffe, find your way through the world’s largest hedge-maze or feel the rush of swinging through the tree tops. We are not joking when we say that Funen is the fairy tale island – there are lots of places for exploring, challenging yourself, playing, learning, and most of all, having great fun together. GO ISLAND HOPPING The South Funen Archipelago is perfect for casual island hopping – whether you choose to sail around between the isles, go on a bicycle vacation or hike along the 200 km long Archipelago Trail through the South Funen landscape. Sailing between the South Funen isles is a beautiful, relaxing and peaceful way to spend your vacation. CULINARY AND HISTORICAL EXPERIENCES Funen’s excellent produce has become a hallmark of the island: Everywhere, various foods are being produced: Vegetable gardens, fruit orchards, cattle ranchers, microbreweries, cheeseries, ice cream dairies and chocolatiers. The tradition of cultivating high quality ingredients is deeply rooted in the rich Funen soil. And the Funen soil also takes some of the credit for the many castles and manors. Nowhere else in the country are manors situated so closely together: a total of 123 castles and manors lie sprinkled across Funen and the isles. Some of them are open to the public – Egeskov and Valdemars Castle being the most famous - offering both historical and action-packed experiences for all ages. “Vi støtter Børnehjælpsdagen”

”What appeals me about The Children’s Aid Foundation is that is it very tangible and concrete. Through different activities the organization provides the children in care with tools that enables them to see their own competences and strengths – abilities which the children may not have known or believed they possessed. If I can contribute in giving these children rays of comfort, it is my pleasure to do so.” Peter Gade

“My hope is, that I can give the children in care some different experiences than what they know from their everyday life. I am super excited about meeting the children, and hopefully they will be up for playing badminton with me and just have a lot of fun.” Christinna Pedersen

Støt kampen mod

diabetes!

Odense has in recent years hosted the tournament of world stars at Yonex Denmark Open. And Denmark wants to remain in the classy company. - Odense has been and is a great place to be. There have been great willingness by the municipality to help, and we are very pleased that Odense will continue to be one of our major and best partners, chief of event in Badminton Denmark, Brian Moesgaard, says, adding: - The same we can say about the Sport Event Denmark. They do a great job in securing big events to Denmark, and we are pleased with the cooperation we have and have had when it comes to this great setup, says Brian Moesgaard. There should be played five Premier Series tournaments per year from 2014-2017, and Badminton Denmark is struggling with Australia, China, England, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore to be the host. | YON EX DEN M A R K OPEN 2012 | PAGE 21 |

EFTERÅRSFERIE

I VERDENSKLASSE

A F E L I N E A N D E R S E N , E V E N T & C O M M U N I C AT I O N M A N AG E R , S P O R T E V E N T D E N M A R K

| PAG E 2 2 | YONEX D ENMARK OPEN 2012 |

SPORTS EVENTS

MADE IN DENMARK

BWF World Premier Superseries have been staged in Denmark since 2011, and badminton is one of the most popular sports in Denmark with a long and strong tradition both in relation to the day-to-day activities in the Danish clubs and in relation to major international badminton events. In 2014 the BWF World Badminton Championships will be your excuse to revisit Denmark and experience world class badminton in world class settings. Denmark has thus a long and solid tradition of staging major international sports events. With Sport Event Denmark leading the way, the relationships between national federations, international federations, host cities and Sport Event Denmark itself have developed over the years into strong and trusted partnerships. Throughout the event hosting process Sport Event Denmark works in close co-operation with event rights-holder, local or-

ganising committees and host cities to ensure the successful delivery of an event. Taking an active involvement right from the beginning – from the vital bidding process to the careful event planning and marketing until the event is flawlessly executed – Sport Event Denmark is a hands-on partner. For Sport Event Denmark, a key aspect of creating long-term relationships between host cities and international federations involves playing an active role in sports and sport events. Having developed a strong reputation as a trusted partner, international federations and their sport events know that when they come to Denmark they are guaranteed that everything down to the last detail of organisation will be planned and reviewed in order to produce a professionally-organised event that benefits athletes, coaches, officials and international representatives from the world of sport. Ultimately the Danes and Sport Event Denmark want to grasp the passion of the sport and display the event in a unique way which will be talked about and shared throughout the world. So let’s talk badminton!

Morten Frost is the most winning player ever at the tournament.

BY R A S M U S B E C H

DENMARK OPEN

– HIGHLIGHTS

1936 the first tournament was played in Copenhagen. The first name of the tournament was: “International Championships of Denmark”. The tournament has changed name with time. Up to the 1990’ties the tournament was The Danish Open. The Denmark Open has been part of the title ever since.

FROST PROUDER THAN BEFORE Morten Frost is the most winning player ever at the tournament. He has taken a total of 8 titles – 7 in a row!

The Second World War put a stop to this new invention in Danish badminton. For five years Denmark Open waited in the dark and finally, in 1946 the tournament was back. In 1967 and for many years to come the finals were played in K.B. Hallen in Copenhagen.

- It’s always great to win a title for the first time, but for me it’s like, when you win the title again, it’s bigger, because you can do it again. When I’m thinking of it today, I’m very proud. Maybe even prouder than I was, when I won the titles, Morten Frost says.

- I remember I took the train to K. B. Hallen to watch the tournament. Already at that time the tournament had a great tradition, and it was great to watch, the former champion Morten Frost says.

Danish profiles like Erland Kops, Finn Kobberø, Flemming Delfs, Lene Køppen, Poul-Erik Høyer, Thomas Lund, Camilla Martin and Peter Gade have all won the tournament.

The tournament has been played in many Danish mayor cities. Besides Aalborg, Vejle, Farum, Aarhus and now Odense have hosted the tournament each for several years.

- The tournament was one of the first great victories I got. And I won the trophy to keep, Morten Frost says and continues:

Yonex Denmark Open made the price money at $400.000. $30.000 for Men’s and Women’s singles and $31.600 for the doubles category.

DENMARK OPEN IS SPECIAL TO ME

BY R A S M U S B E C H

Peter Gade’s career is on its way to the end, and now begins the last badminton-related adventures at Yonex Denmark Open for the Danish men’s singles. - Denmark Open is one of the tournaments where you always want to perform well. It is our tournament, and it has always been high on my list, says Peter Gade. THE FIRST WAS SOMETHING SPECIAL 35-year-old Peter Gade debuted in Denmark Open back in 1994 when the tournament was played in Esbjerg. - It was great. I beat Rashid Sidek. It is here, you as a young Dane have the possibility to meet the big foreign players on home soil, Peter Gade says, who also highlights two other Denmark Open moments. TWO GREAT MOMENTS - Denmark Open last year in 2011 was a really good tournament. The matches against Viktor Axelsen and Lee Chong Wei were two matches with great intensity. And it was great to play them at home. In the match against Viktor, I had everything to lose, and in the semi-final against Lee Chong Wei, I played at a high level, and I actually could well have defeated him. I enjoyed playing the games at home, says Peter Gade and thinks back to another DO-moment: - My final in 1997 against Dong Jiong is also a match, I remember, even though I lost. It was a struggle at the highest level. He was the best in the world at the time, and I was one of the best. It was a really good game, Gade says. WILL PUT HIS OWN SENTENCE There is less than two months before it is over for the perhaps greatest Danish badminton star ever. The grand finale is against Lin Dan in Copenhagen Masters in Falconer Hall between Christmas and New Year. | PAG E 2 6 | YONEX D ENMARK OPEN 2012 |

But right now it’s Yonex Denmark Open and Gade wants to finish in a good way. - I want to play exactly the way I like it. I obviously play to win, as much as I can, but how far I reach, is not the most important. - The most important thing for me is that I can go and enjoy playing it or the last matches, I get at Yonex Denmark Open. It is important to me that I can give the maximum and be there mentally. Therefore, I hope that I avoid injuries, which can make it hard for me to hit that level, Peter Gade says prior to her last Yonex Denmark Open. BADMINTON DENMARK

- READY FOR THE FUTURE Danish badminton is heading to a bright future, predicts Director of Badminton Denmark, Charlotte Malmroes. Badminton Denmark has gone through some major changes during the past year. A name change has been done, and the communities under Badminton Denmark have also changed their name, so now there is a red line from Badminton Denmark and to the districts. And if you ask Charlotte Malmroes, Danish badminton goes into an exciting future. And that statement is not only for the game inside the court.

BY R A S M U S B E C H

From Badminton Denmark hand, there is much focus on the grassroots in Danish badminton, and it is according to director important not only to look at the elite. - Badminton is a sport for all, and of course it is the best players much people see. But remember that the best also comes from somewhere. They come from a place where there is room for everyone, and everyone can have fun with playing badminton, says Malmroes. - Therefore it is important that the Danish badminton clubs get the right help for their daily work, the clubs are one of the most important parts of Badminton Denmark.

- It is a clear ambition that we should do well at the Olympics in 2016, but we also have ambitions to unite the Danish badminton country even more than we have been in the past, says Charlotte Malmroes.

BADMINTON DANMARK

– KLAR TIL FREMTIDEN Dansk badminton går en god fremtid i møde, spår direktør for Badminton Danmark, Charlotte Malmroes.

| YON EX DEN M A R K OPEN 2012 | PAGE 27 |

OF BY R A S M U S B E C H

PORTRAITS Joachim Fischer Nielsen and Christinna Pedersen are, after a longer break from tournaments on top of The Olympics, now back in familiar surroundings at Yonex Denmark Open, which they have won three times in their career as a pair.

This summer, Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen had their debut at the Olympics, and they could hardly have wished for a more perfect one, as the couple ended up winning silver at the tournament, thus adding yet another fantastic achievement to their career.

An early August day, the Danish pair consisting of Joachim Fischer Nielsen and Christinna Pedersen had the whole world’s badminton fans sitting on the outer edge of their chairs when they played in the semi final at The Olympics against two of their Chinese archrivals. Unfortunately for the Danes, they ended up losing the match, but it was after having played three long, intense and close games.

At the age of 32 and 29 years Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen for the first time in their respective careers featured at The Olympics after having missed selection in 2008. It was not, however, visible that it was the first time the couple attended the Olympics, as there was no sight of beginners’ nerves. The couple managed to go all the way to the final, where they lost to the probably best pair in the world as of now, Chinese Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng.

Many will describe that tournament as the couple’s best ever, and perhaps they even will themselves. Yet, it is hard to pinpoint one tournament or one performance as their greatest, as there have been several great performances to talk about. Especially within the past year, including two Superseries triumphs in a row, first at Yonex Denmark Open and the week after at French Open. In spite of Joachim Fischer Nielsen relatively advanced age, he has actually not been playing in the mixed doubles category for very long. After playing with Britta Andersen, he was in 2008 paired with Christinna Pedersen, who until then had played with Rasmus Bonde. And although the partnerships yearly duration can be counted on one hand, they have, as written, many great performances to look back on, and more to achieve in the future, guaranteed. Besides now having won the Yonex Denmark Open three times (2011, 2009 and 2008), it is also worth mentioning the couple’s tournament victory in the Superseries season finals in 2009, their bronze medal from the World Championships the same year, and their prize as Danish Badminton Players of the Year in 2011. Although Joachim Fischer Nielsen has turned 34, he has stated that he bets on still playing badminton in 2014, when the World Cup is to take place on Danish soil again. | PAG E 2 8 | YONEX D ENMA RK OPEN 2012 |

We must, however, not look very far back in time, before there was actually speculated about the Danes might having that predicate. Over a period of eight months, from November 2010 to June 2011, the Danish pair actually were ranked No. 1 in the world, and in that period they won both the Superseries season finals in December and the All England in March. There is thus hardly any major titles back, that Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen have not yet won, besides to the biggest, the World Cup and The Olympics. Whether they get the opportunity to go to the Olympics again in four years is still to be unknown, but already now speculations are rising on whether the World Cup in 2014 on home soil will be an ideal opportunity for the two gentlemen, who by that time will be 36 and 33 years, to perfectly round off a glorious career as a couple. The couple’s first significant achievement dates back to 2006, when they won silver at the European Championships. Since then it has only gone one way for the couple, who, apart from a longer injury period to Carsten Mogensen a couple of years ago, have not experienced major crises as a couple, despite their personal differences. They have always managed to get things working on the court, and they more and more, as time passes, almost look like a symbiotic unit when they are side by side on a badminton court.

OLYMPICS ARE OVER - THE FUTURE IS NOW

It was a successful Olympics for Danish badminton, but the Olympics does not only mean success - it also means that there will be made new double constellations. BY R A S M U S B E C H

After the Olympics Danish badminton said goodbye to the mixed doubles star, Thomas Laybourn, and it meant that Kamilla Rytter Juhl should have new partner. And here was chosen one of the largest double talents on the Danish national training.

THE DANISH DOUBLES AFTER THE OLYMPIC 2012:

IT IS AS EXPECTED In the future, Kamilla Rytter Juhl will play along with Mads Pieler Kolding, which until now has played with Julie Houmann. The new couple played in Holland last week, and Yonex Denmark Open 2012 will be the first major tournament of the new duo.

MEN’S DOUBLES: Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen Rasmus Bonde/Mads Conrad-Petersen Mads Kolding/Christian Skovgaard Kim Astrup/Anders S. Rasmussen (Anders Kristiansen erstatter Astrup indtil 1/12 2012) Frederik Colberg/Mikkel Elbjørn Joachim Fischer/Jonas Rasmussen

- It goes as we expected and hoped. We have a good top level, and now the goal is to raise our bottom level, Kamilla Rytter Juhl says.

WOMEN’S DOUBLES: Kamilla Rytter Juhl/Christinna Pedersen Line Kruse/Lena Grebak

- It is difficult to have a goal for Yonex Denmark Open. We want to show some good things, and we want to tease the best and see if we at this early stage can compeed at their level, says the female part of the new duo.

MIXED DOUBLES: Joachim Fischer/Christinna Pedersen Mads Kolding/Kamilla Rytter Juhl Anders Kristiansen/Julie Houmann Anders S. Rasmussen/Lena Grebak Frederik Colberg/Sara Thygesen

- I DO MY OUTMOST Mads Kolding has been part of the international badminton tour for some years, but it does not change the fact that he is incredibly proud that Kamilla Rytter Juhl and he now shall try to reach the top together. - It’s great for me. It is a huge chance. There is much pressure on now. Every time I’ve done something good with Julie (Houmann ed.), it has been a surprise, so I have to do my utmost and do well from the start, Mads Kolding says. NEW YOUNG MEN’S DOUBLE Another new couple is the men’s double with Mads ConradPetersen and Rasmus Bonde. Conrad-Petersen has played with the former world champion, Jonas Rasmussen, and although Conrad-Petersen is looking forward to the new challenges, he admits, that the team work with Jonas Rasmussen has made him a better player. - I have been very happy to play with Jonas. He has taught me a lot - especially mentally, he has really moved me. I had never won a match in Asia, before we started playing together, so there has been a lot. The fact that we have beaten three of the four couples who were in the Olympic semifinals, and both pairs of finals, makes me proud , I think, Mads Conrad-Petersen says. Han he can only praise his former partner. - There is no bad feelings in Jonas, and he is a pleasant person to be with. Therefore, I am delighted that he has a chance to finish his career with Joachim Fischer. I wish him all the best for the future.

CHEN LONG IS DEFENDING CHAMPION At Yonex Denmark Open 2011 Chen Long won the strong men’s singles category after defeating Lee Chong Wei in the final. They are both featured again this year in a field that counts eight of the top ten men’s singles players. BY A L E X A N D E R W E N G P E T E R S E N

LEE CHONG WEI (MALAYSIA) – NO. 1 IN THE WORLD (AS OF THE 27TH OF SEPTEMBER 2012)
The Malaysian, double Olympic silver medalist is back as world no. 1, and is known as one of the world’s best men’s singles players in history. He is also known for always having been over-shadowed by Chinese Lin Dan, who also beat Wei in the final at The Olympics in August. Lin Dan is not participating at Yonex Denmark Open this year, making toad to success seem paved for the multiple Superseries winner, who among other titles, have one from All England 2011 on his resumé. The program, however, features last year’s winner, Chen Long, so it will be interesting to see what Malaysia’s gold bird can achieve in Odense this year.

CHEN LONG (CHINA) – NO. 3 IN THE WORLD (AS OF THE 27TH OF SEPTEMBER 2012)
To many Danes, Chen Long is the man who unofficially put an end to Peter Gade’s professional era, when he at the Olympics in London beat the Dane in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals however, he had to capitulate against Lee Chong Wei, which he actually beat in the final at Yonex Denmark Open last year. Chen Long has been touted to be the most likely successor to Lin Dan, when he chooses to put the racket on the shelf. And it is not without reason that the expectations are high for the young Chinese. As late as autumn 2011 the then 22-year-old Chinese won three Superseries tournaments in a row - China Masters, Japan Open and the tournament here in Odense. The question now is whether Long can repeat last year’s success.

CHEN JIN (CHINA) – NO. 4 IN THE WORLD (AS OF THE 27TH OF SEPTEMBER 2012)
Despite his early flowering on the international world stage, Chen Jin never managed to cement himself as Lin Dan heir, especially not after the arrival of Chen Long. Despite that, Chen Jin always is a constant threat to the world’s top men’s singles

players, which a constant ranking in the world’s top five for many years also shows. Merely 20 years old, he won the 2006 China Masters, and the following year came a handful of great performances, including an All England title and a World Championship. Only two players at the Yonex Denmark Open is ranked higher than himself, so the chances of reaching podium at Yonex Denmark Open is certainly not unrealistic for Jin.

PETER GADE (DENMARK) NO. 8 IN THE WORLD (AS OF THE 27TH OF SEPTEMBER 2012) He is Denmarks, Europes and even the world’s most beloved badminton player in recent times. The man who for many years was Denmark’s biggest medal hope, is back in Odense for the last time in his career to play one of the favorite tournaments, Yonex Denmark Open, on home soil. Last year he demonstrated great strength during the tournament, when he in the quarterfinal sent Viktor Axelsen out and pushed Lee Chong Wei to the limit in the semifinals. For the coming months, the badminton world’s attention is focused on Peter Gade, who at the Yonex Denmark Open shall see if he can round off his last tournament on his turf, in a successful way. STRONG OUTSIDERS: Simon Santoso (Indonesia) Sho Sasaki (Japan) Kenichi Tago (Japan) STRONG DANES: Jan Ø.

CHEN LONG (KINA) – 23 ÅR – NR. 3 PÅ VERDENSRANGLISTEN (PR. 27.

THE BEST OF THE BEST With the exception of Wang Xin of China, all of the world’s best women’s singles players are present in Odense to fight for the gold at the Yonex Denmark Open. Thus there is a fully open battle of the title, which was won by no other than Wang Xin last year. BY A L E X A N D E R W E N G P E T E R S E N

WANG YIHAN (CHINA) – NO. 1 IN THE WORLD (AS OF THE 27TH OF SEPTEMBER 2012)
It was a close call last year for the world’s best women’s singles player, when she last year lost the final at Yonex Denmark Open to her countryman, Wang Xin. This year, the latter does not feature in the program, which, all things being equal, makes the way to the title easier for the Olympic silver medalist. All her opponents should fear her on court. She can boast of having won no less than 22 titles, including China Masters late as in September. Of the greatest triumphs, her world championship in 2011 and her Superseries season finale gold from the same year are some examples.

LI XUERUI (CHINA) – NO. 2 IN THE WORLD (AS OF THE 27TH OF SEPTEMBER 2012)
The story of Li Xuerui is one of those who belong in the sunshine section. Earlier this year, when the Chinese badminton federation should select the players who could compete for gold at the Olympic Games, there was much debate about who the players should be. Li Xuerui ended up being preferred over Wang Shixian, despite her then lower world ranking, and actually ended up winning the gold in the women’s singles category, after defeating Wang Yihan in the final. In addition to the Olympic gold, Li may also boasts of being this year’s holder of the All England title. It is therefore a Chinaman with wind in her sails, who these days unfolds herself in Odense, and she is definitely a favorite for to claim the title at Yonex Denmark Open.

SAINA NEHWAL (INDIA) – NO. 4 IN THE WORLD (AS OF THE 27TH OF SEPTEMBER 2012)
The young Indian is in many ways a record setter in her homeland. Besides being the first Indian badminton player to win a Superseries tournament, she was also the first to win a medal at the Olympic Games when she won bronze at the tournament this August. And not only did she set the records - she also did at a very young age. Already in 2009, at the age of just 19, she

won Indonesia Open, which then was her first gold medal at the Superseries level. The pursuit of success is not likely to end here however, as the young talent have yet to rank as the world’s top women’s singles player and win a medal at the world championships - and Yonex Denmark Open for that matter.

WANG SHIXIAN (KINA) – NO. 5 IN THE WORLD (AS OF THE 27TH OF SEPTEMBER 2012) Wang Shixian completes the young Chinese trio, who are expected to do well at Yonex Denmark Open. Despite her current position as No. 5 in the world, she has previously topped the world ranking, when she in January 2011 was ranked as the world’s No. 1 women’s singles player at the age, only 20 years old. And although she was not in London this year during The Olympics, she still has a title from this year’s Korea Open and Macau Open to boast of. In 2011 she won the All England title, while she in both 2011 and 2009 swept to the top at China Masters.

A F A L E X A N D E R W E N G P E T E R S E N

WANG YIHAN (KINA) – 24 ÅR – NR. 1 PÅ VERDENSRANGLISTEN (PR. 27. SEPTEMBER 2012)

Allerede i

GREATEST STARS AND NEW DUOS It is difficult to predict how it will turn out in the men’s doubles at this year’s Yonex Denmark Open. The world’s best pair is present, and some of the best players are also attending but in new constellations. BY R A S M U S B E C H

MATHIAS BOE/CARSTEN MOGENSEN (DENMARK) - 2 WORLD RANKING (AS OF 27TH OF SEPTEMBER 2012) The Danish duo picked up an impressive Olympic silver medal in London earlier this year, and it is also the best non-Asian bid for a winner of the Yonex Denmark Open 2012. The two Danish profiles have had a break after the Olympics, and there is no doubt that Boe/Mogensen want to show that it is not only abroad, they can get the great victories. The duo has once won the traditional tournament. It was when they beat Markis Kido/Hendra Setiawan in two sets in 2010. In 2011, they reached the semifinals in Odense. Other big wins include All England (2011), Superseries Finals (2010 + 2011) and Korea Open 2009.

FU HAIFENG/CAI YUN (CHINA) - 3 WORLD RANKING (AS OF 27TH OF SEPTEMBER 2012) It is the world’s best men’s doubles right now. Maybe it’s the best men’s doubles ever. The two Chinese have shown that they have everything that it takes to be superstars in badminton sport and the Olympic final against Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen testified that the two Chinese just have a gear more than any other. An Olympic gold and silver medal, four World Championship gold, four Sudirman-gold, five Thomas Cup gold and victories in all Super seriers and Premier Series showes it too. The big question is: Is it the last time the two Chinese are on Danish soil?

bronze final at the Olympics in London, however, they lost to Lee Yong Dae/Chung Jae Sung. Koo/Tan won Yonex Denmark Open in 2009 and 2007

LEE YONG DAE / KO SUNG HYUN (KOREA) - 145 WORLD RANKING (AS OF 27TH OF SEPTEMBER 2012) The qualification for this year’s Yonex Denmark Open can be very strong. Dae and Ko has been put together when Chung Jae Sung stopped his career. The two Koreans must be considered favorites to reach a semi-final of Yonex Denmark Open 2012, but strong pair as Zhang Nan/Chai Biao, who won the China Masters, Markis Kido/Alvent Yulianto Chandra (Indonesia) and Danish Jonas Rasmussen/Joachim Fischer can all end up in the qualification, if the Chinese and Indonesians enters from the reserve list. KIEN KEAT KOO / BOON HEONG TAN (MALAYSIA) - 6 WORLD RANKING (AS OF 27TH OF SEPTEMBER 2012) The Malaysian duo can be like night and day. Their bottom level has on several occasions proved to be lower than the other favorites to YDO title, but when they hit the day, their playing style can be a threat to most pairs. These are two players who want to play fast, and the style of play also sent them in the

OUTSIDERE: Kenichi Hayakawa/Hiroyuki Endo(Japan) Ye Shen/Wei Hong(Kina) Kim Sa Rang/Kim Ki Jung(Korea) Zhang Nan/Biao Chai(Kina)(Hvis de kommer ind i kvalifikationen) SPÆNDENDE DANSKERE: Mads Conrad-Petersen/Rasmus Bonde Christian Skovgaard/Mads Kolding Jonas Rasmussen/Joachim Fischer

WORLD’S BEST IN ODENSE In the women’s doubles category at the Yonex Denmark Open China is strongly represented in the discipline with respectively no. 1, 2 and 3 in the world. Kamilla Rytter Juhl and Chris Pedersen is the fourth highest ranked pair in the category at the tournament.

 BY A L E X A N D E R W E N G P E T E R S E N

TIAN QING/ZHAO YUNLEI (CHINA) – NO. 1 IN THE WORLD (AS OF THE 27TH OF SEPTEMBER 2012) Until very recently Tian Qing and Zhao Yunlei was no. 2 in the world. But due to their recent streak of good results, combined with Yu Yang and Wang Xiaoli’s controversial absence on the international badminton scene, they have now climbed to the place that gives them the right to call themselves the world’s best women’s doubles pair. Add to this an Olympic championship in the year 2012 and get a Chinese duo who certainly are peaking at the moment. The pair has previously been known to have a tough time against their countrymen, Yu Yang and Wang Xiaoli, but the question is whether Tian and Zhao can use the momentum they currently have at Yonex Denmark Open, and cement their eligibility for the top place on the throne.

YU YANG/WANG XIAOLI (CHINA) – NO. 2 IN THE WORLD (AS OF THE 27TH OF SEPTEMBER 2012)
Up to the Olympics in London, Yu Yang and Wang Xiaoli were big favorites to take gold in the women’s doubles category. However, a very unfortunate affair ended up with the two Chinese being excluded from the tournament based on the assumption that they had deliberately tried to not play up to their best. Despite statements about a possible career ending in the wake of the Olympics, the pair now again features in the program at one of the world’s largest badminton tournaments, Yonex Denmark Open. And they must, together with Tian Qing and Zhao Yunlei, be described as the biggest favorites for the title. In addition to their world ranking position, a world championship from 2011, and a multitude of Superseries titles, including Yonex Denmark Open 2011, also speaks highly of the couple’s quality.

ZHONG QIANXIN/BAO YIXIN (CHINA) – NO. 4 IN THE WORLD (AS OF THE 27TH OF SEPTEMBER 2012) Despite the status as the world’s third best pair, Qianxin

Zhong and Bao Yixin have for a long time been accustomed to stand in the shadow of the above two pairs, partly due to their common nationality. This, for example, resulted in the pair not making it to the Olympics in London. But Zhong and Bao is in no way a pair to be underestimated because they nationally stand in the shadow of Tian and Zhao and Yu and Wang, for they have definitely reached their world ranking position by coincidence. Both China Masters and Singapore Open this year ended with gold medals to the couple, and they actually managed to finish second at the Asian Championships earlier this year as well.

KAMILLA RYTTER JUHL/CHRISTINNA PEDERSEN (DENMARK) – NO. 6 IN THE WORLD (AS OF THE 27TH OF SEPTEMBER 2012)
The Dane pair consisting Kamilla Rytter Juhl and Christinna Pedersen is perhaps Europe’s best bet for a medal at Yonex Denmark Open. The couple have previously captured a gold medal in Asia, namely Malaysia Open earlier this year, and was at the Olympics in August close to taking home a medal from London as well. Although Kamilla Rytter Juhl and Christinna Pedersen are not known to bring down one China pair after the other, they have still proven that they are able to tease the world’s best couples. The Danes managed for example to make it to the Superseries season finals in 2011, where they also reached the semifinals. And as everyone knows, the home advantage often make a difference. It shall therefore be interesting to see what the two ladies, who both play for Greve in the Danish Badminton League, can achieve at Yonex Denmark Open this year.

DANES HAVE TO FIGHT FOR TITLE DEFENSE

Last year Joachim Fischer Nielsen and Christinna Pedersen won the mixed doubles at Yonex Denmark Open, but shall they defend the title this year, they first have to beat both of the Chinese Olympic finals’ pairs and a myriad of other world class pairs. BY A L E X A N D E R W E N G P E T E R S E N

XU CHEN/MA JIN (CHINA) – WORLD NO. 1 (AS OF THE 27TH OF SEPTEMBER 2012) At the very top of the mixed doubles’ pairs’ world ranking list, one finds Chinese Xu Chen and Ma Jin. For a year, the pair have been sitting firmly on a place in the Top2, while they in August managed to climb to the first place and hence succeeding their countrymen, Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei, in world ranking. The pair has several great results to write on their resumé, including a silver medal at this year’s Olympic Games. Recently they won China Masters, and earlier this year they swept to the top at Korea Open. In addition, they pair has claimed several runners up placements, including the Malaysia Open in the beginning of the year and Yonex Denmark Open last year.

ZHANG NAN/ZHAO YUNLEI (CHINA) – WORLD NO. 2 (AS OF THE 27TH OF SEPTEMBER 2012) Besides of being Asian Champions anno 2012, they are also now defending Olympic Champions in the mixed doubles category. In august Zhang Nan and Zhao Yunlei won The Olympic Games by beating Xu Chen and Ma Jin in the final, and only just recently lost the first place in the world ranking to the same pair. The duo has not been in action since The Olympics, so it will be exciting to see what the long break from tournaments has done for the immediate world no. 2 pair at Yonex Denmark Open. The pair has a habit of delivering results of varying quality from time to time. While they won Malaysia Open in the beginning of the year, they for example did not even end among the best 16 pairs at the All England in the early spring.

JOACHIM FISCHER NIELSEN/ CHRISTINNA PEDERSEN (DENMARK) – WORLD NR. 3 (AS OF THE 27TH OF SEPTEMBER 2012) The Danish mixed double pair, Joachim Fischer Nielsen and Christinna Pedersen, possibly secured the greatest achievement of their career when they won the bronze medal at The Olympic Games back in August. However, it is difficult to distinguish between all the major achievements the Danes have

gained during their time as a couple, lately within the last year. After finishing second in last year’s Japan Open, they took the final step and swept to the top on home soil at Yonex Denmark Open, which proved to be the start of an impressive streak of Superseries tournaments the couple performed well in. Now they are back in Odense to defend the title, and it will be interesting to see if they can repeat last year’s victory.

TONTOWI AHMAD/LILIYANA NATSIR (INDONESIA) – WORLD NO. 4 (AS OF THE 27TH OF SEPTEMBER 2012)
Many will probably remember the Indonesian pair, Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir, as the pair who hardly could do anything against Joachim Fischer Nielsen and Christinna Pedersen in the bronze match at The Olympics, which the Danes won confidently. But the Indonesians are certainly no lightweights in the mixed doubles discipline. The couple has several tournament victories to boast of, among others one from March, where they won the All England tournament. Also this year’s Swiss Open and India Open ended with first places to Ahmad and Natsir, which is why their current fourth place in the world ranking is fully justified.
