NIGHTINGALE: Generation XYZ
Multi-Generational Housing in the Australian Context Introduction: Nightingale Housing
The Nightingale Housing Model - developed by Breathe Architecture - challenges the status quo of the multi-residential housing scenario in Melbourne through committing to delivering affordable, sustainable and community-focused housing at cost.
Concept: Independent Units with Shared Spaces
Project Brief
1 out of every 5 Australian adults live in multi-generational households yet there remains significant social stigma attached to this fairly beneficial housing model. Nightingale: Generation XYZ explores the potential of the multi - generational housing model in the Australian context with the intention to adopt its positives while diminishing its negatives.
Design Approach
The units for the generations X,Y and Z are designed to function independently, yet are tied together by the common double height loft space 2 that accommodates shared living, dining and kitchen to encourage greater personal interactions between occupants.

UP
Hikikomori 引き籠り are recluses who withdraw from social life, often seeking extreme degrees of isolation and confinement. The hikikomori have been described as ‘modern-day hermits’. Misunderstood and shrouded in stigma, hikikomoris participate little in society, often burdening their families.

UNDERGRADUATE EUROPEAN EXCHANGE YEAR | Center for Investigation at the Fort of Trafaria | 2012
Center for Investigation at the Fort of Trafaria Exchange Semester at Universidade de Evora Portugal Introduction
The Fort of Trafaria is situated at the mouth of River Tagus where it enters into the mainland of Portugal from the Atlantic Ocean. Due to such a strategic location, the Fort of Trafaria has been under naval military threat numerous times in the past. The Fort of Trafaria is one of the several series of forts built by the Portuguese during the 18th and 19th Centuries to protect mainland Portugal. However, in time the Fort witnessed several historic events, such as it being used as a prison for well-known prisoners during the Carnation Revolution in 1974. Today this Fort is completely abandoned in a much declining neighborhood.

Retained Pathways
Proposed Addition The Fluvarium
Project Brief
The location of the Fort of Trafaria at the mouth of Tagus makes it suitable to accommodate an Investigation Center for marine birds and fish. The project included taking into consideration the historical and cultural importance of the site and also proposing a new dock for the area.
Design Approach
Based on the history of the site, the approach to designing was to preserve the buildings that incorporate the most significant history, renovating them only on the interior to accommodate present day functions, but keeping the exterior just as it is. Only one new building had been added. The intention was to try and “freeze time, interfering least and leave history at its natural settings.

Mosharraf Residence Private Residence in Dhaka, Bangladesh ABOUT | This residential project had an existing structural layout when we were approached by the client, which posed an unique issue for arranging the spaces. However, conceptualizing the spaces with an inside-out approach brought out spatial flow with the shared living space acting as the heart of the apartment.
