Historically informed view of the Préludes

Frédéric Chopin: Vingt-quatre Préludes pour le piano op. 28 Prélude pour le piano op. 45 BÄRENREITER URTEXT Hardly any cycle of piano pieces can match the magnetic attraction of Chopin’s 24 Préludes, published in 1839. Schumann called them “sketches, beginnings of études, [...] ruins, stray eagle's pinions, all disorder and wild confusion”. Christoph Flamm has critically reevaluated the sources, bringing to light new readings of this well-known musical text. Hardy Rittner, a hammerklavier specialist and two-time winner of the ECHO Classic prize, who has recorded Brahms’ piano music and all of Chopin’s Études on period pianofortes, has supplemented Chopin’s fingering from a historically informed perspective. He also provides valuable notes on performance practice, especially with regard to pedalling, rubato, latent polyphony, legato and Chopin’s perception of sound.

The Czech composer František Xaver Dušek (1731-1799) was a leading figure in Prague’s music life in the latter half of the 18 th century. This is the first scholarly-critical edition of Rachmaninoff’s works for piano and violoncello. It contains Lied (1890), Prélude et Danse orientale op. 2 (1892) and the Sonate op. 19 (1901). The last two works were dedicated to the cello virtuoso Anatoly Brandoukoff, the teacher of Piatygorski. Lied is a short lyrical piece that places light demands on technique. Prélude et Danse orientale op. 2 dates from Rachmaninoff’s early years and the Sonate was written after he had successfully recovered from a depression accompanied by a “creative paralysis”. One of the major cello works of the 20th century, the Sonate is written in the same expressive vein as the Second Piano Concerto op. 18. The acclaimed Rachmaninoff scholar David Cannata has taken all sources into account, documenting the works’ genesis and incorporating Brandoukoff’s performance instructions into the score.

The Belgian Charles Auguste de Bériot (1802-1870) was not only a violinist but also a teacher and composer. Scène de Ballet, perhaps his best-known composition, is a favourite with violin students. One such student was the young Itzhak Perlman, who included it in his collection Concertos from my Childhood. The piece captivates with its beautiful melodies and refined rhythms. Bériot also composed a number of concertos. His Concerto no. 9 in A minor, published in 1859, is likewise a favourite with more advanced students. Julia Fischer played it with verve at the early age of eight. The piece stands out with seemingly virtuosic short passages, varied rhythms and a slight Hungarian touch.

The Editor Kurt Sassmannshaus is a world-famous violin teacher with a professorship in Cincinnati (Ohio, USA). He is also the founder of the Great Wall Music Academy, an international summer camp for young string players in China. Josef Suk played second violin in the Bohemian String Quartet. Since 1914 the ensemble was obliged to perform the Austrian national anthem at the opening of every concert. Suk decided to supplement this obligatory piece with a work inspired by the ancient sacred Bohemian St. Wenceslas hymn. The hymn’s message – a plea for the well-being of the Czech people, directed at their patron saint – was immediately understood by the audience. The Bohemian String Quartet performed this single-movement Meditation for the first time on 27 September 1914; the premiere of the version for string orchestra followed on 22 November 1914, played by the Czech Philharmonic. That same year the piece was published by Fr. A. Urbánek together with arrangements for piano and organ.

Beethoven’s sacred works include two settings of the Mass. The Mass in C major, completed and premiered in 1808, has been unjustly described as a preliminary step towards the great Missa solemnis. Yet it is a self-contained and, for its time, decidedly modern piece of church music. Drawing on the rich body of sources, Beethoven specialist Barry Cooper suggests practical solutions to the work’s musical and interpretative problems. His deep study of the sources convinced him to include a fully realized organ part in the score, just as Beethoven envisioned it for the first printed edition. As stated in the sources, the parts for the soloists and choir are notated on joint staves to demonstrate that the soloists are also to sing the choral passages. A moving passion oratorio by Telemann

Telemann’s passion oratorio Der Tod Jesu was composed in 1754-55, roughly at the same time as the same-named highly regarded work by Carl Heinrich Graun. Both pieces are settings of the same libretto by Karl Wilhelm Ramler. In this late work, Telemann consciously contrasts the carefully crafted recitatives with musically reduced solemn choruses to obtain an emotional reading of the Passion text. This vocal score complements the Urtext score of this moving passion oratorio which is published as part of the Georg Philipp Telemann Musical Works. Mendelssohn’s setting of Psalm 98 was written in a few weeks to satisfy a commission in his new position as general music director of Prussia and was premiered by the Berlin Cathedral Choir on 1 January 1844. As he neither released the work for publication nor produced a vocal score, his psalm setting did not appear in print until after his death. For this edition the authoritative Mendelssohn specialist John Michael Cooper drew primarily on the autograph score with its many subsequent corrections and amendments. In this way it differs from many other editions, which tend to treat the autograph as a subordinate source. Rounding off the edition are an informative Foreword and a detailed Critical Commentary. The piano reduction is based on the first printed edition, published by F. Kistner and Evers & Co. in 1851.

Its themes are based on the Marian hymn of praise (Magnificat) from the Gospel according to Luke. Bach gave the free combination of poetic paraphrase and Biblical text a varied musical setting ranging from the mighty opening chorus via two large arias to an intimate duet and richly pictorial recitatives. Despite the small instrumental forces of ad libitum trumpet, two oboes, strings and basso continuo, Bach creates a majestic musical language appropriate to the Magnificat. This Urtext performing edition is based on the New Bach Edition.

For the Reger centenary 2016 marks the first centenary of the death of Max Reger. In addition to his best-known field of creativity – organ music – his choral compositions form another major part of his oeuvre. The Missa Divi Xaverii ZWV 12, an expansive and unusually richly scored work, marks a highlight in the œuvre of Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679-1745). It was composed in 1729 while he was working at the Dresden court. The principal source of this first edition is the damaged autograph score which had long been kept under lock and key. Passages missing because of its damaged condition have been supplemented using secondary sources or reconstructed by Václav Luks, clearly marked as such in the musical text. The first performance to use the present new edition took place in the summer of 2014, when it was performed at the Utrecht Early Music Festival. Franz Schubert: Rosamunde, Fürstin von Cypern D 797 Incidental music to the four-act play by Helmina von Chézy BÄRENREITER URTEXT On 20 December 1823 Helmina von Chézy’s Rosamunde received its premiere performance at Vienna’s Theater an der Wien. Unfortunately the Viennese version of this drama with ghosts, pirates, attempted poisonings and other horrifying ingredients has not survived – unlike Schubert’s popular incidental music which also includes choruses and dances. This music was already highly praised by contemporary critics, with special acknowledgment given to “the genius of this much-loved master”. As evidence of its popularity, the overture and the Hunters’ Chorus had to be encored at the premiere. Now Bärenreiter is issuing one of Schubert’s best-known compositions in a complete vocal score with piano reduction.

Dvořák’s Serenade in E major for string orchestra is one of his most popular and frequently played works. It was written in the spring of 1875, when he had just experienced his first successes at the conductor’s podium and had received a state arts scholarship. The score and parts were published by Bote & Bock, Berlin, in 1879. This Urtext edition is based on the composer’s autograph score. It corrects mistakes found in the first edition and so, for the first time, the editor incorporates omitted passages from the autograph, marking them with Vi-de. This reconstruction makes it possible to clarify the piece’s structure. Like its companions Nos. 90 and 91, Haydn’s Symphony No. 92 in G major was written in 1789. All three symphonies were commissioned in 1788 by Prince Kraft Ernst von Oettingen-Wallerstein, who was to be granted exclusive ownership. However, Haydn first sold the works to the Parisian Masonic lodge SociĂŠtĂŠ Olympique and was thus unable to fulfil his obligation to send the autograph scores to the prince. The symphony received its nickname “Oxfordâ€? in the 19th century, probably in connection with a performance that took place when Haydn received an honorary doctorate from Oxford University in 1791.

Dvořák’s Seventh Symphony was commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Society in August 1883 and premiered in London under the composer’s baton on 22 April 1885. Two months later he shortened the second movement by about 40 bars. The work was published by Simrock in this form in 1885. In 2013 Bärenreiter published the score and orchestral parts in a first scholarly-critical edition of Dvořák’s Seventh Symphony (BA 10417). Now it is being issued in a study score edition. The editor, Jonathan Del Mar, has already won international acclaim for his editions of the Dvořák Cello Concerto (BA 9045) as well as of works by Beethoven and Elgar. He has taken every source into account, including the extant correspondence.

Johann Sebastian Bach: Complete Organ Works ... Any complete scholarly critical edition of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach must incorporate new research findings in the interest of scholars and performers alike. Now all of Bärenreiter’s new performing editions of Bach’s organ works are being revised to reflect the current state of scholarship and to convey maximum fidelity to the sources by being linked to Bach digital. The present volume is an updated edition of Series IV, Volume 6 of

the New Bach Edition (NBA), prepared by Dietrich Kilian in 1964. The discovery of new sources and a reassessment of existing handwritten copies have brought about changes to the contents of the volume, which now includes the Fantasia in C minor (BWV 1121), the Fantasia in G major (BWV 571), the Fugue in G major (BWV 577) and the C major version of the Toccata and Fugue in E major (BWV 566). On the other hand, the Prelude in G major (BWV 568) as well as the alternative versions of the Fugue in C minor (BWV 574 a) and the Prelude in A major (BWV 536a) have been discarded as presumably spurious. Besides the new compilation and corrections of the musical text, the volume also contains a detailed Foreword by Peter Wollny with observations on each work and the extant sources. Page turns have been re-examined and improved. In collaboration with the Bach Archive Leipzig and its Bach digital database, links are provided to all the major sources. The website http://links.baerenreiter.com enables readers to access the relevant page in the source simply and conveniently via short URLs. The links stored there are examined for their validity on a regular basis. Each volume in this complete bilingual edition of the works of Johann Jacob Froberger (1616-1667) contains a Critical Commentary and a detailed Foreword with sections on the edition’s structure and scope, editorial method and performance practice, as well as discussions of contemporary instruments, ornamentation and Froberger’s life. Volume VII now brings the complete edition to a close. It contains two previously unpublished motets, Alleluia absorta est mors (FbWV 701) and Apparuerunt Apostolis (FbWV 702), both for soprano, tenor, bass, two violins and continuo, as well as the Capriccio in C (FbWV 706) for four voices or four instruments. Juan Cabanilles was the organist at Valencia Cathedral and the towering figure of Spanish organ music in the latter half of the 17 th century. His works, primarily Tientos, organ hymns and organ versets, have come down to us entirely in manuscript copies.
