A “special” edition in every sense It’s not just the price that’s special, but also the well-selected cross-section of our piano catalogue. No less eye-catching is the multi-coloured cover based on the colours of our Urtext editions. The pieces and movements in this edition range from the 18 th century through to the first decades of the 20th century. During these approximately 200 years keyboard playing developed considerably and together with the unstoppable rise of the pianoforte since the end of the 18 th century, it became hugely popular. The fifteen composers who are represented in this edition have each, in their inimitable way, shaped the possibilities of sound and playing techniques of this instrument in their works. In our piano collection you will find compositions from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Early Modern eras. The pieces also vary in national style and range from low through to high technical difficulty. An appetiser for our Urtext editions – give it a try!

Virtuosic, lyrical … Composed at about the same time as the Grande Sonate pathétique op. 13, the two op. 14 sonatas are among the easiest Beethoven ever wrote and an indispensable part of piano lessons. Their lyrical, almost chamber-like textures and moderate difficulty make them an ideal introduction to the rich legacy of Beethoven’s sonatas. In contrast, the Sonata in C major op. 53 (1803-04) marks Beethoven’s turn towards large-scale symphonic influenced piano works. Since its first publication this highly virtuosic piece, dedicated to Beethoven’s friend and patron Ferdinand, Count Waldstein, has lost none of its magnetism. To this day it remains a pianistic challenge and a musical touchstone for every performer.

A masterpiece for Wittgenstein In 1929 Paul Wittgenstein, a pianist and war veteran who lost his right arm in the Great War, commissioned Maurice Ravel to write a concerto for him to perform. The result was one of Ravel’s most thrilling compositions and, for Wittgenstein, the most important of the many works he commissioned over the course of his career. This scholarly-critical edition of Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand is based on previously inaccessible and unknown sources. The editor, Douglas Woodfull-Harris, was able to consult manuscripts in the private library of the Paul Wittgenstein Estate which allowed him to retrace the work’s evolution from Ravel’s autograph working copy to the first printed edition.

Maurice Ravel: Concerto for the Left Hand for Piano and Orchestra BÄRENREITER URTEXT Edited by Douglas Woodfull-Harris With a Foreword by Christine Baur Score BA 7881 · approx. € 39.95 Piano reduction by Maurice Ravel BA 7881-90 · approx. € 34.95 Wind set BA 7881-65 · approx. € 79.00

A source of key importance to our new edition is a handwritten French copy of Ravel’s own piano reduction (the autograph is inaccessible) that he gave to Wittgenstein to facilitate rehearsing the work. This copy is the sole source reflecting Wittgenstein’s own interpretation and containing his corrections to the final cadenza. It also helps us to understand omissions in the first edition of the score as well as the piano reduction, and enabled the editor, amongst other things, to correct a great many notes which could be found in previous editions, including the solo piano part. The piano reduction in our edition contains both Ravel’s and Wittgenstein’s fingering. Also included is a solo part without fingering, thereby giving pianists the opportunity to enter their own fingering after having studied those of Ravel and Wittgenstein. • Score and orchestral parts in large format (25.5 x 32.5 cm) • Includes source descriptions and a Critical Commentary with

Though Bohuslav Martinů produced a lot of didactic material for the piano, not all of it has been published and many delightful works have remained unknown. In this Easy Piano Pieces and Dances album, Martinů’s four-part piano cycle Quarter and Eighth Notes, composed in Paris in 1937, appears for the first time. It is devoted to changes of metre and tempo. The work, previously known only from his correspondence, was long considered lost until a copyist’s manuscript of it resurfaced in Brno in 2011. The jazz piece One Step, composed in 1921, is also made accessible here for the first time. It hitherto only existed in the composer’s autograph. Along with these two “discoveries”, this album contains the dance pieces that Martinů composed in Polička in the 1920s as well as the three-part cycle Christmas, composed in Paris in 1927. These were previously available in Compositions for Polička. • Includes original Martinů works, some published for the first time • Foreword (Cz/Eng/Ger) and fingering by Lucie Harasim Berná • Easy to moderately difficult pieces

The Bohemian touch

Jan Křtitel Vaňhal: Concerto in C major for Viola and Orchestra Piano reduction by Vilém Blažek Viola part revised by Jan Plachta

The Bohemian composer Jan Křtitel Vaňhal/Johann Baptist Vanhal (1739–1813) settled in Vienna around 1763. There he wrote several concertos for various instruments, of which two for viola have survived. Both are evidently not original compositions, but arrangements by Vaňhal of some of his own works, a common practice of that time. The Viola Concerto in C major is based on Vaňhal's cello concerto in the same key.

Key violin concertos of the 20th century Bohuslav Martinů wrote his First Violin Concerto in Paris in 1932–33, this work having been commissioned by the violin virtuoso Samuel Dushkin. However, it was never performed during his lifetime and was even considered lost after his death. Only in the late 1960s was the autograph rediscovered by the Belgian musicologist Harry Halbreich. The première was given by Georg Solti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1973 with Czech violinist Josef Suk as soloist.

250th anniversary of Telemann’s death

A festive piece for church and concert hall

Georg Philipp Telemann: Die Auferstehung und Himmelfahrt Jesu TWV 6:6 Oratorio for Mixed Choir and Orchestra Composed around 1760, Die Auferstehung und Himmelfahrt Jesu is one of Telemann’s last large-scale vocal works. The libretto, by Karl Wilhelm Ramler, recounts the Biblical events from the Resurrection to the Ascension in seven sections. Alternating between recitative, da capo arias and festive choruses, Telemann succeeds in producing a vivid and effective musical interpretation of the libretto. Our edition of this oratorio is based on the Urtext from Georg Philipp Telemann Musical Works. The score contains a realisation of the continuo part. The work is ideal for performances in church and concert hall alike. • Complete scholarly-critical edition based on Georg Philipp

Chorale settings form a central part of Telemann’s œuvre. His 1754 setting of the church hymn Christus, der ist mein Leben, based on Melchoir Vulpius’ melody from the Hamburg Hymnal, is especially well-suited to display his mastery in depicting the words of the chorale. The so-called “Ausfüllungsbass” (a vocal bass added to the principal bass in tutti passages) was probably necessitated by the acoustical properties of Hamburg’s churches. This is the first Urtext edition of this highly successful chorale setting which is based on Georg Philipp Telemann Musical Works. The score contains a realisation of the continuo part.

Festive music for Whit Sunday

Georg Philipp Telemann: Gott der Hoffnung erfülle euch TVWV 1:634 Cantata for Whit Sunday for Soloists, Choir and Orchestra BÄRENREITER URTEXT In 1717 Telemann composed his cantata Gott der Hoffnung erfülle euch for Whit Sunday based on a text by Erdmann Neumeister. It forms part of the Concerten-Jahrgang, also known as Das Harmonische Zion or Italienischer Jahrgang where all the cantatas are conceived as concertos for vocal and instrumental parts and have been colourfully scored. This particular work includes two oboes, two Corni da Caccia and strings. Vocal soloists, choir and instruments alternate and have equal musical standing in this festive Whit Sunday cantata which provides a valuable addition to the church service or concert repertoire. • Urtext edition based on Georg Philipp Telemann Musical Works

Mozart’s Requiem: revised piano reduction ... Mozart’s final work, the Requiem K. 626, was left incomplete. The completion of the fragmentary score by his assistant Franz Xaver Süssmayr, who helped him with The Magic Flute, has the character of a historical source with utmost closeness to Mozart’s thoughts. The completed Requiem score, published in the New Mozart Edition, serves as the basis for this vocal score edition which now appears in a revised form and newly engraved. Minor corrections have been made to the musical text, the vocal parts have been made easier to read and the piano accompaniment easier to play.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Requiem, K. 626 BÄRENREITER URTEXT Edited by Leopold Nowak

Christoph Wolff, an authoritative Requiem connoisseur has supplied a Foreword with a clear and concise account of the work’s genesis and its musical features. SACRED CHORAL WORKS Video samples on

Mårten Jansson: Choral Works a cappella Missa brevis in E-flat minor (SATB) (Lat) BA 8521 · approx. € 4.95 To appear in October 2016

Ingenting utanför / Nothing Beyond (SSMezAA) (Swed/Eng) BA 8522 · approx. € 3.95

The Missa brevis in E-flat minor for mixed choir a cappella has been composed in the tradition of the short Mass (without Credo) and can be easily managed by most choirs. Thanks to its conciseness, it is suitable for use in church services, while its delightful harmonic layout and consciously simple melodies (with clear allusions to folk music) also make it perfect for concert performance. Ingenting utanför / Nothing Beyond is another collaboration between Mårten Jansson and the Swedish poet Einar Askestad. This a cappella choral work deals with sorrow and loss. After a forceful, harmonically ambiguous section and a clear break in the music, the piece ends with a comforting decrescendo of reconciliation. It was commissioned by the Uppsala female choir “La Cappella” and is dedicated to its choral director Tony Margeta.

In 1878 Dvořák was in Vienna and was so impressed by a performance of Mozart’s Wind Serenade in B-flat major K. 361 that he wrote his own wind serenade within the space of two weeks after his return. Taking Mozart’s piece as his model, he supplemented the wind band with a bass part for violoncello and double bass. The op. 44 Serenade, which also delighted Johannes Brahms, was issued by Dvořák’s publisher Simrock shortly after its première. Our new Urtext edition draws on this first print while using the autograph to correct a number of mistakes and above all inconsistencies in articulation. • First Urtext edition of Dvořák’s popular Serenade for winds

Orchestra

Continuing the publication of Haydn symphonies Haydn's Symphony Hob. I:89 belongs to a group of symphonies composed between the ‘Paris’ symphonies (Hob. I:82-87) and their ‘London’ counterparts (Hob. I: 93-104) – the last ones he wrote before his trips to England in 1791-92 and 1794-95. The Symphony in F major is dated 1787 in the autograph score. In this work Haydn borrowed two movements from an earlier piece, possibly owing to deadline pressure. The second and fourth movements are arrangements of movements 2 and 3 from his Concerto in F major Hob. VIIh:5 for two “lire organizzate” and orchestra. The fact that he also arranged movements from his other lire concertos suggests that he regarded them as a sort of musical quarry. This at least allowed him to recycle parts of these works after his patron had probably prohibited him from offering them commercially. This edition continues the collaboration with the Henle publishing company regarding Haydn's large-scale choral works, operas and symphonies. It is based on the Henle Complete Edition of the Works of Joseph Haydn. The complete performance material for several Sturm und Drang symphonies and all of the London and Paris symphonies is now available from Bärenreiter. • Based on the Henle Complete Edition of the Works of Joseph Haydn • Orchestral parts in a large format (25.5 x 32.5 cm)

Study Score

One of the major Del Mar editions in a study score This study score is based on the score and complete performance material of Dvořák’s famous B minor Cello Concerto (BA 9045) edited by Jonathan Del Mar and published in 2011. In addition the study score contains a Foreword by Dvořák scholar Jan Smaczny. Like every other major 19th-century cello concerto, Dvořák’s concerto resulted from a collaboration between the composer and a virtuoso musician. Several passages in Dvořák’s autograph were written by the cellist Hanus Wihan but Bärenreiter’s edition now reveals that some details in the orchestral parts are also in his writing, showing just how closely the two musicians were working together.

Antonín Dvořák: Concerto for Violoncello in B minor op. 104 BÄRENREITER URTEXT Edited by Jonathan Del Mar With a Foreword by Jan Smaczny TP 620 · approx. € 18.50 To appear in September 2016

The editor Jonathan Del Mar has conscientiously examined every available source, including two that have hitherto been either ignored or crucially undervalued. His research has led to a benchmark edition that reconstructs, for the first time since its initial publication in 1896, Dvořák’s definitive version of the solo part. It differs from previous editions in practically every measure and hundreds of corrections have also been made to the orchestral parts. • Includes Dvořák’s final and definitive version of the solo cello part • Incorporates new discoveries regarding the collaboration between Dvořák and Wihan • With Feuermann’s and Casals’s alternative versions of a passage in the first movement • Detailed Foreword (Eng/Cz/Ger)

Organ

The close of the Vierne Complete Edition Louis Vierne (1870–1937) brought symphonic French organ music to its stylistic climax. Besides being a productive composer, he also gained a reputation as a brilliant improviser at his place of employment, the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, and throughout the world. In 1928 Vierne, one of the best-known organists of his day, made one of the earliest organ recordings, playing Bach works and his own improvisations in Notre Dame.

Louis Vierne: Complete Organ Works Volume X: Improvisations and Transcriptions BÄRENREITER URTEXT Edited by Helga Schauerte-Maubouet BA 9238 · approx. € 24.95 To appear in November 2016 No distribution rights for France and Spain.

Three improvisations released in 1929-30 were transferred to musical notation in 1954 by his pupil Maurice Duruflé. Another previously unpublished improvisation which was recently rediscovered among Vierne's posthumous papers was reconstructed and published in musical notation in 2005 by Duruflé’s pupil Jean-Michel Louchart (b. 1946). These four improvisations join Vierne's transcriptions of works by Johann Sebastian Bach, César Franck and Sergei Rachmaninov in this volume, bringing our complete edition of his organ works to a close. Contents 1) Improvisations: - Three Improvisations (reconstructed by Maurice Duruflé in 1954) - Improvisation (reconstructed by Jean-Michel Louchart in 2005) 2) Transcriptions: - Johann Sebastian Bach, Sicilienne BWV 1031 (1894) (mvt. 2 of the Sonata in E-flat major for flute and harpsichord) - César Franck, 5 Pièces d′harmonium (1901) - Sergei Rachmaninov, Prélude in C-sharp minor op. 3 no. 2 (1932) (from: Morceaux de fantaisie) • New source material incorporated • Extensive trilingual Foreword (Fr/Eng/Ger) with detailed
