The Choirmaster’s Burial SSATBB, Latin SSA/English TBB BA 7413
“Fear Thou Not” was commissioned by the Swedish women's vocal ensemble “Les Jolies” (gold medalists in the 2002 Choir Olympics). The piece depicts how man can change from doubting to believing, led by God’s voice which both comforts and admonishes.
This composition uses word painting to re-tell Thomas Hardy’s classic poem about an old tenor and the death of his choirmaster. The men and women are divided into two choirs; the men represent the old tenor telling the story and the women represent an angelic chorus singing the antiphon “In Paradisum” from the Requiem Mass.

NEW 2015
“Cantate Domino” was originally written for male choir. By adding women's voices this version for mixed choir presents a further dimension of colour. This version also makes it possible to divide the choir into two groups, one for women and another for men, and to have them sing either together or as separate units.

In the Light of God NEW 2015 SMezATB, Swedish/English BA 7417 “I asked my friend, the poet Einar Askestad, if he could write a poem for me about love between father and son, brothers and God. I felt that these forms of love are seldom sung about. The poem moved me greatly and I have tried to put music to these words which is simple yet full of beauty. In the four movements of this suitelike piece, various aspects of these relationships are conveyed.” (Mårten Jansson)

God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen Arrangement NEW 2015 SATB, English BA 7419 This wonderful carol melody is sung by the altos and is accompanied by an ostinato “motor” in the male voices. The soprano part moves independently and comments, so to speak, on the melodic happenings.

Es ist ein Ros entsprungen NEW 2015 Arrangement SSAATTBB, German/English/Swedish BA 7418 “I have embedded this internationally well-known melody in a harmonic room of bells which is rendered by the male voices. To enhance the feeling of two independent entities, the melody and the bell ostinato are performed in different metres. Tension increases in the second verse when the melody is performed in a canon but dissipates at the end of the piece.” (Mårten Jansson)

“My music is my own and I have never tried to be original. That has always been my motto and I have only tried to use music to express all the feelings which life has to offer. This has led people to describe my music as ‘so sad that it sounds like birds who have lost their wings’ but also as ‘the happiest classical music that we have ever heard’. My compositions are almost all sacred. They express not only my own faith but also my appreciation and respect for the timeless texts that have been used for centuries and centuries.”
