CHAIRMAN'S WELCOME

A warm welcome to the British Academy Television Craft Awards. This past year has been a terrific one for television viewers, often reflecting a monumental year in British history. Throughout our ups and downs, television has remained the medium that brings us as a nation together, allowing us to share moments that will be talked about for years to come. Tonight, we celebrate the diversity of British creativity and the talent behind the programmes we’ve enjoyed. I’m thrilled to witness how the level of innovation and professionalism in this country has reached higher standards than ever before – let’s celebrate the achievements of tonight’s nominees and of top quality television in all its forms. One of the most talked about events in recent memory was, of course, London 2012, the coverage of which was watched by an estimated 90 per cent of the population. I’m therefore delighted that Hamish Hamilton, the man who executive produced and broadcast directed the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Olympic Games and one of the

world’s outstanding multi-camera directors, is to receive tonight’s Special Award. Huge thanks to our host, Stephen Mangan, to all our partners and supporters, and to category sponsors Brightcove, The Farm LA, G-Technology, HotCam, The London Studios, M·A·C and Sara Putt Associates. Thank you to BAFTA’s Television Committee, its chairman Andrew Newman and the many expert BAFTA jurors. Thanks also to Kelly Smith, Siobhan Pridgeon, Clare Brown and everyone at BAFTA who have worked tirelessly to bring us tonight’s ceremony. We’ll be live-tweeting the winners via @BAFTA and publishing video highlights, features and winners’ interviews throughout the night on www.bafta.org. Congratulations and best of luck to the nominees, who offer such great inspiration. I wish you all an enjoyable evening. JOHN WILLIS Chairman of the Academy

Hamilton’s first multi-camera experience on BBC Two’s The Sunday Show followed. “I had absolutely no idea what I was doing and it was live to air,” he recalls, but Richard Godfrey at MTV liked what he saw and offered him directing duties on the Hamburg concert. Like many TV crafts, multi-camera directing is one that Britain does well. “Look at the people directing the outside broadcast and studio shows in America and they’re all Brits. The BBC should take a lot of credit for training people and MTV for giving them opportunities,” says Hamilton. “I am delighted to be celebrated as a multicamera director,” Hamilton concludes. “It’s a unique art form in its own right. The BAFTA isn’t just for me – it’s one that all multi-camera directors in Britain can share. We’re a small community of people and I’ve been inspired by so much of their work.” Matthew Bell is a freelance television journalist. 19
