herald Ruminations Most institutions hold grand celebrations on the silver, golden, diamond or centennial anniversaries and hold perfunctory observances on other years. Baguio Country Club in not only in a class of its own, it has also achieved enough to warrant a Super Centennial. Over the last 110 years, the “decidedly primitive” clubhouse has grown into a 5-story edifice with 166 rooms. The social center of Baguio of old has become the leader in the tourism and hospitality industry of the City. Over the last decade, the Club has been at the moving spirit of the two biggest tourism activities in Northern Luzon: the Panagbenga Festival and the Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Weekend. Not surprisingly well-deserved recognition has marked the last decade. Last year, the Club's abiding efforts to 'go green' met the standards set for it to be recognized by ASEAN as a Green Hotel for 2014-2016. Now, Baguio Country Club will be the only 5-Star hotel in the northern Philippines.

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON The Club's 2015 Panagbenga float was inspired by the successful movie, How to Train Your Dragon. The mythical dragon embodies the Club's 100 year existence as a leader innovating change and setting trends in the service industry. The other characters represent the residents of Baguio who hail from different parts of the country. They not only co-exist in the city, oftentimes, they also team up to make Baguio a better place to live in.

Your Club began the yearlong celebration of its Super Centenary (110th) last February 18, 2015 with simple but significant activities. We had a Thanksgiving Mass at the Powerhouse, released 110 doves and, planted trees along the fairways of the golf course. The tree planting will continue throughout the year. The target is a hundred ten (110) trees per fairway for a total of 1,980 trees. On your next trip to the Club, please plant a tree yourself or have one planted in your name. This is a legacy you will leave for the future generations of the Club, as well as, the country. For only PhP 110.00 per tree, the Club will protect and nurture the tree to its maturity. In an earlier issue, we published photos of the trees we planted at Burnham Park only 10 years ago to show how they have grown higher than 20 feet! We hope to accomplish the same level of growth of the trees planted within Club Property. Another Super Centenary Project was the mural intended for the Front Desk. Two contemporary artists, Alladin Antiqueno and Azor Pazcuguin, were commissioned to depict some of the historical highlights of the Club in an art piece. Due to the planned renovation of the Front Desk and the Lobby areas, the installation of the mural was deferred indefinitely. Another significant Super Centenary event will be the free distribution of wheel chairs and prosthetics to the different barangays and families of BCC employees to be held on May 10 at the Club. Allow me to thank Councilor Richard Cari単o and the City of Baguio, my cousin Manuel V. Agcaoili of the Party List Group "Akapin" and the Church of the Latter-Day Saints (also known as the Mormons), headed by Dr. Josephine Robredo-Bundoc, for their generosity and kindness. Finally, may I thank Earl Tesoro and Richard Cari単o of the Apaches of Baguio who extended Honorary Membership to me on the occasion of the 75th year of the organization. Maraming salamat po!

To our valued members, Our year-long Super Centennial celebrations began on February 18th with a renewed commitment to preserve the environment. A total of 1,453 trees were planted along the fairways of the golf course. By our 112th anniversary, we hope 1,980 new saplings will have their established roots. As part of our development plan, we are also embarking on three major renovation projects for implementation beginning June 2015, as follows: 1) Renovation of the P. Ilusorio Wing (East) Veranda This is Phase II of our Veranda Renovation Project. Like the Roman Ozaeta Wing (West) Veranda that we renovated last year, this will be the first major improvement that we will undertake for this popular dining outlet since its construction in 1993. Works will include expansion of the bay areas, raising and replacement of roof shingles which had been a cause of constant leaks, improvement of faรงade and interior walls, replacement of floors, and improvement of lighting. 2) Renovation of the Cotterman Room This was likewise constructed in 1993, and its constant use prompted us to undertake renovation to address lighting, ventilation and areas that deteriorated due to wear and tear. 3) Renovation of the Multi-Purpose Hall (MPH) Originally built for Tennis Courts, a new MPH will accommodate family and corporate events and other big occasions. Works will include improvement of ventilation, sound proofing and lighting, replacement of roof and walls; construction of satellite kitchen, storage facility, restrooms, stage, dressing room, pre-function room, driveway, underground parking lot, and service tunnel access from the Ballroom satellite kitchen to the MPH kitchen. We will close the whole East Wing beginning June 1, 2015 until the end of September 2015. During the closure, food and beverage service will be temporarily focused at the Roman Ozaeta Wing Veranda. In October, we will reprise our role in spearheading the Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Weekend where professionals and students in the hospitality industry will contend in a series of competitions. Finally, news that Baguio Country Club has been rated a 5-star hotel by the Department of Tourism could not have come at a more meaningful time. It is a testament to the abiding commitment of the Club's Board of Directors, management and employees to provide members and guests the best service and amenities. Surely, this recognition embodies the legacy of excellent service and timeless traditions that is Baguio Country Club. Allow me therefore to thank the Board of Directors and members for the privilege of serving you for over twenty-five years.

BCC Celebrates its 110th Anniversary in a Unique Way By Andrew Pinero On a cool February Wednesday afternoon, members and their families, employees and caddies gathered at the front tee of Holes Number 1 and 10 of the sprawling par 61 golf course of Baguio Country Club. It was the 110th anniversary of the Club. BCC President Atty. Federico R. Agcaoili came up with the idea of celebrating the Club's Super Centenary in a very unique way. “Renewing our relationship with mother earth by planting 110 trees in every fairway of our golf course may not have a big impact, but it is a start, and will truly benefit

our children and their future children,” Agcaoili said. He assured the people present during the simple ceremony that trees will be planted throughout the year. Moreover, henceforth, it will be a part of the yearly anniversary celebration of the Club. Members who adopted fairways had their names tagged on the tree guards of every sapling they planted. A total of 1,980 Benguet Pine and Norfolk saplings are to be planted. Before the tree planting, members and their families, BCC employees and caddies released

110 doves to seal their commitment in preserving Mother Nature. The employees also showed their skills as they marched in synchronicity to form the acronym ‘BCC’ and the number ‘110’. A wine and cheese party followed at the Par 7 where the members were delighted by the food prepared by the Chefs. With the Club adjudged as a recipient of the prestigious ASEAN Green Hotel Award, the celebration of the Club’s Super Centenary was truly a defining moment in the Club’s history.

BCC holds Fire Evacuation and Emergency Drill By Juliet Cristina Llobrera-Pasion, RN In observance of March as the Fire Prevention Month, the Club conducted a Fire and Evacuation Drill last March 18, 2015. The purpose of the drill was to provide guidance on the orderly evacuation in an event of an emergency. When the alarm sounded at 3:12 P. M. due to a possible Code Red at the 3rd floor of the main building, the evacuation and triage area was immediately set up. The Search and Rescue Teams, the Medical Team and Fire Brigade were deployed in order to respond to the emergency. Outside agencies such as the Camp John Hay Fire Department, Baguio City Fire Station and the Baguio City Police Office lent assistance by making their manpower and apparatus available. The scenario was made more creditable with the presence of 13 ‘victims’ in various emergency conditions requiring extrication and transport to the triage for first aid and medical management prior to transport to the nearest hospital, if need be. It was noted that due to constant drills, the Club's system and command procedures have improved immensely. Our response time is only 33 minutes and 41 seconds.

o continuously provide better and improved facilities to our members and guests, the Club has scheduled the following construction and renovation projects for this year: 1. Conversion of Tennis Court Structure to MPH (MultiPurpose Hall)-Convention Center Due to the Club's demand for bigger venue for different events, the tennis court, which was built in 1999, will be converted into a Multi-Purpose Hall-Convention Center. As envisioned by 3 ARKITEKTURA, the existing structure and shape will be maintained but enlarged. The ground floor will have the main hall, kitchen, a pre-

function area, a secretariat, performers' dressing room and restroom. The basement will hold parking slots, male and female as well as drivers' restrooms and storage area. In addition, there will be a mezzanine and an audio/visual room. A driveway will also be provided for easier access. The project will be implemented from June to December 2015. 2. Renovation of Core Area, East Verandah, Cotterman and Par 7 The existing roof and ceiling of the Core Area to Par 7 will be raised with the shape of the East Verandah simplified with no more bay areas. The Cotterman Room will be renovated to address lighting,

ventilation and other concerns and improved using imported pine and cedar logs with a modern look. Buffet stations will be upgraded. The project will be completed by October 2015. 3. Transfer of Hamada Exhaust Ducting and Blower The Hamada exhaust ducting and blower will be transferred from the Ballroom lobby roof-deck to the area near far end fire exit and rooftop. This will solve the noise and kitchen odor problems affecting some guestrooms in the east wing (Potenciano Ilusorio Wing). The project will implemented from June to July, 2015.

Panagbenga: Two Decades and Counting By Cheryl Anne P. Estepa Baguio came alive with style, color and magnificence as it celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Flower Festival last February. Born out of the idea to help alleviate the City from the devastating earthquake of 1990, Panagbenga's founding father, the late Atty. Damaso Bangaoet, Jr. envisioned the festival as a way of rejuvenating Baguio's tourism industry. The support of the entire community breathed life into the idea as the festival took form in 1995. That first festival was such a beaming success the City decided to hold it the year after that. Since then, “Panagbenga” has been a tradition in the City and

has been synonymous to “Baguio” itself. Drawn from the Kankana-ey term for “a season for b l o s s o m i n g ”, P a n a g b e n g a represents not only the rise of the City from the devastation of the 1990 earthquake, it also embodies a continuing effort to sustain the initial breathe of life the festival gave the local economy twenty years ago. Residents and tourists have not lost their fascination for the festival and the excitement it generates has not weakened. As always, they lined the parade route, taking in the sight of animated costumes depicting floral motifs before being drawn into the sheer pleasure of having

The Panagbenga 2015 logo was conceptualized by Baguio Flower Festival's Creative Director (yours truly) to illustrate that the Festival is a testament of the culture and beliefs of Baguio and the Cordilleras for the past two decades. The flower signifies the Festival itself and each petal exemplifies BLISTT (Baguio, La Trinidad, Itogon, Sablan, Tuba and Tublay) which shows that every petal collectively contributes towards the success of the 20th Panagbenga celebration when in harmony. It bears its theme, “Panagbenga: Across 20 Years, Blossoming Together.”

these 'flowers' dance to the music played by drum and lyre ensembles. The next day, the people gathered once more for the Grand Float Parade. This time sixteen huge and colorful floats flaunted creativity and beauty as they moved through Baguio's main thoroughfares. Numerous flowering plants of all sorts, colors, and sizes were delicately and collectively arranged to form gigantic and sophisticated float designs. To actually see a million fresh flowers clustered up to form intricate works of art up-close was mesmerizing. Ever thought you've seen flowers? Not really. Not until you see them on a Panagbenga float. Little wonder that after

watching the floats amble by, the people congregated at Athletic Bowl where they took selfies to capture their incredible experience. While this visual treat happens only once a year in Baguio. The Festival could not have achieved this kind of success without Baguio's neighboring communities–BLISTT (Baguio, La Trinidad, Itogon, Sablan, Tuba and Tublay). The rich culture and traditions of Baguio and the Cordilleras are incorporated through the costumes, motions and sounds that we yearly experience in Panagbenga. Furthermore, most of the materials used during the festival also come from Benguet's flower industry.

Indeed, the Panagbenga Festival has not only lived on, it has also thrived because of the spirit of community involvement. That is why the Baguio Flower Festival Foundation, Inc. (BFFFI) came up with the theme, “Panagbenga: Across 20 Years, Blossoming Together”–to rightfully recognize the contributions of the BLISTT area. Panagbenga's thriving community spirit is the best proof that the festival has found a home, not only in the City of Baguio, but more meaningfully, a cherished spot in the hearts and travel plans of those who make themselves a part of the Festival every year.
