Design Studio: Fifth year, winter and spring 2012 Advising Professor: Nancy Cheng Site: Portland, Oregon Digital Media: Revit Architecture, 3ds Max, AutoCAD, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Ecotect, Vasari, GIS Project Description: Portland Cultural Forest is a built environment that adapts and transforms to support cross-cultural interaction and improve building energy performance. This design project investigates how cultural diversity mirrors biodiversity. By identifying shared values and patterns among adaptive natural environments that support biodiversity, the study further guides an architectural design process that reflects a similar pattern to support cultural diversity.
Public Transportation The existence of the Oregon Convention Center, the Rose Garden, the Memorial Coliseum and the Lloyd Center Shopping Mall have resulted in a strong public transportation system infrastructure that serves the neighborhood.
Boundaries The selected area of study suffers from an isolation issue resulted from the current location of railroads and major streets and freeways.
Existing Vegetation The existing vegetation and trees, while being overshadowed by the dominant built environment, play an important role in the neighborhood both aesthetically and functionally.

City of Salem Police Headquarters A Gateway to the Civic Center Campus
Design Studio: Fourth year, first term, fall 2010 (Sustainable Cities Initiative) Advising Professors and Firms: Christine Theodoropoulos, Josh Hilton, ZGF Architects, CB|Two Architects Site: Salem, Oregon Hand Media: Ink, Copic marker Digital Media: Revit Architecture, AutoCAD, SketchUp, Photoshop, Illustrator, Ecotect Project Description: Redevelopment of Salem’s Civic Center Campus and a 70.000-square-foot police facility for the City of Salem. The design solution acts as a medium strengthening the connection between the downtown area and the Civic Center Campus while responding to the police facility’s functional and security needs.
Morphology and Sustainability 1. Stretched from east to west, the narrow form of the building allows for optimum integration of passive ventilation and daylight control strategies. Most of the exterior glazing is north or south facing, and a combination of interior corridors and operable windows help circulate fresh air through the buildings. 2. To create a central gateway to the Civic Center Campus and the public library, the pedestrian movement flow is centralized and cuts through the building. 3. The building mirrors the form of the adjacent cascading landscape. The new layout creates outdoor balconies that are used as break areas by the police staff. 4. The form is modified to create well-shaped interior spaces and prevent the balconies from shading one another. 5. The pedestrian traffic flow on the back of the building is guided toward the main central axis by modifying the rectilinear back facade of the building.
Physical Process Model Process and presentation models helped communicate design ideas to reviewers and City of Salem staff.

Portland Municipal Courthouse A New Approach to Courthouse Design
Design Studio: Third year, first term, fall 2009, AIAS Kawneer Design Competition Advising Professor: Jill Salter Site: Portland, Oregon Hand Media: Ink, pencil Digital Media: Revit Architecture, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Sketchup Project Description: The design of a municipal courthouse for the City of Portland using Kawneer curtain wall products. The design solution takes on a new approach to courthouse design and focuses on creating a more positive face for the judicial system. Integration of a small library, a community room, and lecture rooms provide opportunities for the public to interact with the courthouse and learn about the judicial system.
Early Massing and Daylight Impact Study Models The building form, while shading the glazed areas to reduce heat gain, creates interior spaces that have access to an ample amount of daylight
Morphology Diagrams The stepping shape of the building creates a form that acts as a mediator between the taller surrounding buildings and the Portland Pioneer Courthouse Square adjacent to the site. To achieve optimal daylight, the left face of the building is tilted to align with the north-south axis. Exterior gardens create voids through the stepping form to allow daylight to penetrate into interior spaces.

Process and Wood Frame Construction Models Study models helped refine the preliminary organizational layout of the building and the placement of structural elements as well as their impact on outdoor spaces and neighboring houses.
