“London is a leading global city, with strengths in the arts, commerce, education, entertainment, fashion, finance, healthcare, media, professional services, research and development, tourism and transport all contributing to its prominence.

BANKSIDE “On the south side of the river Thames, opposite the City of London and neighbouring South Bank and London Bridge; Bankside's central location makes Bankside extremely accessible, served by major rail and underground connections at London Bridge, Waterloo, Southwark and Blackfriars.
source: http://www.visitbankside.com
NEIGHBORHOOD “The Millennium Bridge springs from a dynamic collaboration between engineering, art and architecture to provide the first new Thames crossing since Tower Bridge.” “Shakespeare's Globe Theatre is a faithful reconstruction of the open air playhouse designed in 1599, where Shakespeare worked and wrote most of his greatest plays.”
source: http://www.visitbankside.com
BUILDING SITE The site currently houses the Tate Modern. The main constraints about the site are way-finding, access and visibility. Access to the river, the Millennium Bridge, and the attractive historical context are some of the opportunities.

HOW?
SITE DESIGN CONCEPT ... the building metaphorically extends out and reaches beyond its site to form pathways that lead back to its heart, where the community comes together.

CIRCULATION The diagram illustrates the main circulation paths around the site.
ACCESS The diagram identifies the main access points to the site.
VEGETATION The diagram maps the existing vegetation on the site.
OVERLAP The information gathered through site analysis is overlapped providing one diagram that reflects all data.
HEART Based on information gathered through site analysis, the main programattic portion of the building is positioned on the site in a way that allows for optimum wayfinding and site circulation, passive and sustainable design strategies, and visibility.
PATHWAY A The west pathway reaches for the adjacent residential areas and takes you trough the art workshops and into the heart.
PATHWAY B The north pathway is aimed at historic context around the site and the tourists visiting the area and takes the visitor through the exhibits and leads into the heart.
Pathway C Pathway C is aimed at the adjacent offices and business. It goes in between the other two portions of the program and takes you straight to the heart.
EXTENDING All three main pathways extend out to reach for the broader context of London, the lower income east side, the emerging south side, the upper income west side and the north.

ENERGY A south-facing photovoltaic system helps harvest the energy of the sun and offset the amount of energy used by the building's active systems. The system is equipped with solar tracking technology to maximize the amount of solar energy collected as the angle of the sun changes based on the season.
