FLOORING – THEN & NOW If you take a look through any of the design magazines today, you’ll see that patterned tile floors are everywhere… in lots of colors, shapes, patterns, and styles. And, along with these great looks, there are all kinds of technological innovations that have changed the way that we not only design, but experience our floors.
W
When it comes to styles in flooring we usually group them into several categories. There are the modern and contemporary designs, the rustic and industrial styles, and then there are the good ole’ timeless and traditional looks. BUT, when you get right down to it, what you think is modern and contemporary might actually be timeless and traditional. That’s right…historically speaking, some of our inspiration has been around since ancient times in some form or fashion.
Last year, my husband and I had the opportunity to go to Israel and see some of the most incredible places in history. It was the trip of a lifetime, and one that we will never forget! Of course, being part of the flooring and design indust y, one thing that fascinated me was the flooring and h w similar these ancient styles were to the ones we see today. All of the pictures you see from Israel are actual pictures I took while we were there… I hope you’ll find it just as intriguing as I did.

Floors from Second Temple Mount - Jerusalem
One of the first places e visited was King Herod’s palace in Masada. You’ll notice that these intricate hexagon shaped patterns on the palace floors a e very similar to tile designs we’re seeing today on walls, floors and backsplashes. Speaking of innovations…well, don’t think that it all came from modern technology. King Herod enjoyed a hot shower too! That’s right, masterful Roman architects designed tile floors that ere heated from below, creating one of the very first heated floor systems. They used large tiles propped up by concrete joists that created a hollow space underneath the surface of the floo . At one end of the space, they placed a large furnace and at the other, a large vent. This allowed the heat from the burning furnace to expand across the hollow space and heat the floor ab ve. Pretty innovative, I’d say. Along with floors inspi ed from the palace of King Herod the Great, were the floors that adorned the econd Temple Mount in Jerusalem. These beautiful mosaic floors ere uncovered during an archaeological excavation where they found over 600 tiles in the midst of tons of sediment removed from the Temple Mount. They are thought to have been part of the opulent flooring that graced the floor of the courtyard of the Second Temple. The floors ere made from red, blue and white marble mimicking the “opus sectile” style, a Roman mosaic design. And, if you’ll notice, these designs are very similar to the mosaic patterns we see trending today. So, when it comes to selecting modernday tiles and floors, emember that some of the most beautiful designs were inspired from the palaces of old…and, you don’t have to be a king to have a floor like one
