Professional Experience In Home Buying We decided that we’d just do it ourselves. When it came time for my wife and I to purchase our first home, we decided there were enough online databases and tools available to manage the process without any help. Like many first-time home buyers, we didn’t know any better. But identifying properties was not as simple as we expected. Due to low listing inventories, dream homes were hard to come by. And when we did find a listing that we could imagine ourselves raising a family in, it turned out plenty of others had the same idea too. Multiple offers would rush in and the best listings would sell quickly — even on their first day. And that’s not the only obstacle we ran into. With two full-time jobs, coordinating times to closely evaluate the properties that were available proved nearly impossible. Verifying that the staged photos we saw and specs we read online would be accurate in real life became a major hurdle as well. What we came to find won’t surprise anyone who has worked with an experienced real estate agent: We needed professional help. Our search for our REALTOR® began; after much research we hired an agent whose dedication to home buyers and sellers spoke for itself, as do the agents advertising in this magazine. She asked about our dream house and helped us separate our needs from our wants, something we hadn’t really considered. She helped us quickly stay on top of the listings as they emerged and, as an industry insider,

was able let us know about listings before they even hit the market. She arranged carefully scheduled tours, helped us refine our walkthroughs and opened our eyes to properties we wouldn’t have considered otherwise. Then, before long, there it was. We were standing in the middle of a home with our agent and for the first time, we felt like this was where we wanted to take the next step in our lives together. Our agent researched comps, helped us put together an offer but, sadly, we found out that… we didn’t get it. We were devastated, but our agent was just getting started. She helped us craft a letter to the seller, knowing from years of experience something that we didn’t — a sale isn’t final until the deal is done. After a few weeks of touring homes that just didn’t quite stack up, we heard from the sellers that the original offer had fallen through and that, with some negotiation, they’d love to sell us our dream home. Suffice it to say, we learned a lot during our first-time home buying odyssey. But, above all, we learned that there are some things that simply cannot be replaced with the internet and a DIY attitude. Well, we’ve said good-bye to 2020, but not all of its design trends. Yes, some of the styles that were gaining popularity last year will continue to trend into 2021 and for good reason. They make us feel good! So, Let’s talk about what 2021 looks like… it looks like bright, bold colors, comfy and traditional styles, timeless and vintage classics, natural or more organic textures, some new design words like “Grandmillennial Style” and oh yes, the 80’s are back!

very year, Pantone announces its color of the year along with Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams, just to name a few. Well, this year they either fall into the bright and bold spectrum or into the organic and nature-loving palette. So, Pantone did something a little different this year and actually announced TWO colors of the year – a cheerful Illuminating Yellow and classic Ultimate Gray. Benjamin Moore got on the brighter spectrum as well introducing a calming, peaceful Agean Teal blue and Sherwin Williams went in a completely different direction evoking a sense of nature with this beautiful Urban Bronze.

Playing off SW’s deep bronze color of the year, you’re also going to see more organic, natural fibers in carpets, area rugs and even furniture and home accents. Wicker and Rattan furniture might have been a trend of the past, but it’s come

So, let’s go back to color for a minute. We’ve said bold colors are making their way into our spaces and you may be asking where? So, take the floral wallpaper, antique paintings (or any other vintage touch), then blend it with a comfy, traditional or modern style… and there you have it, the Grandmillennial Style! Of course, with every new year, there will be new designs and trends. Some you’ll like and others you won’t.
