It’s been almost two years since we shared the making of the Haley Cabin, and since then, interior walls went up, stones were laid and the finishing touches were set in place. Almost 200 years in the making and this old cabin has a whole new family and life of its own. Inside these logs of centuries old, we designed a space that was not only modern and unique, but one that preserved the history and integrity of the original cabin. To give you a little history of the cabin, we’re going to take you back to a small town in West Virginia. Originally built by the Jackson family in 1842, this Single Pen story and half style log cabin was later turned into a beautiful white two-story home for the Shaver family who enjoyed it for many years. In 2018, Mark Bowe of

DIY’s BARNWOOD BUILDERS had the opportunity to save this cabin and find it a n w home right here in Alabama for the Haley family. Preserving the history of the cabin and creating a “modern meets rustic” design was all the inspiration needed for the Haley’s and designer, Karen Tillery to transform this cabin into beautifully crafted space with a character all its own. So, if there’s not a log on the wall, you’ll find unique patterns that not only mimic days of old, but reflect toda ’s modern designs.

In the kitchen we used a weathered-brick porcelain tile for the backsplash, quartz countertops with some slight gray veining and dove gray shaker style cabinets around the perimeter. One of our favorite features was this kitchen island Karen designed with a live edge waterfall top and built-in table with seating for the small space we had to work with. The main flooring e chose to use throughout the cabin was one of our beautifully engineered hardwoods, a blend of hickory, maple and oak giving you incredible dimension and style. We also used glass tiles,

concrete-look tiles, modern floor designs and patterns in each of the bathrooms. And everywhere there was not a log on the wall; we used unique and old-look porcelain tiles to bring a sense of cohesiveness to the entire cabin. Once the cabin was completed, it was time to add the finishing touches and b y did we have fun putting it all together! We mixed modern finishes and ustic styles for the lighting fixtu es, contemporary fabrics and furniture and a few “unexpected” elements to pull it all together. Everywhere you look in this cabin, you’ll find designs that will not only inspire you, but challenge your creativity… every piece of charm and character that was original to this cabin, will forever be engraved in the walls of these logs and the hearts of each of the families that once, and now, called it HOME.
