There’s No Replacing
Professional Experience In Home Buying We decided that we’d just do it ourselves. When it came time for my wife and I to purchase our first home, we thought there were enough online databases and tools available to manage the process without any help. Like many first- ime home buyers, we didn’t know any better. Identifying properties was as simple as expected. There were plenty of potential homes in our market, all with numerous glamor photos, appealing specs and other available data. But that’s where the convenience ended. With two full-time jobs, coordinating times to tour the properties in person was nearly impossible. Verifying that the staged photos we saw and specs we read online would be there in real life became a major obstacle. What we came to find won t surprise anyone who has worked with an experienced real estate agent: We needed professional help. The search for our REALTOR® began; after much research we hired an agent whose dedication to home buyers and sellers spoke for itself, much like the agents advertising in this magazine. She asked about our dream house and helped us separate our needs from our wants, something we hadn’t really considered. She helped us whittle down the mountain of listings we had discovered online to a “must see” list.

She arranged tours, helped us refine our wa kthroughs and opened our eyes to properties we wouldn’t have considered otherwise. Then, before long, there it was. We were standing in the middle of a home with our agent and for the first ime, we felt like this was where we wanted to take the next step in our lives together. Our agent researched comps, helped us put together an offer and, after a few weeks, we found out that… we didn’t get it. We were devastated, but our agent was just getting started. She helped us craft a letter to the seller, knowing from years of experience something that we didn’t — a sale isn’t final un il the deal is done. After a few weeks of touring homes that just didn’t quite stack up, we heard from the sellers that the original offer had fallen through and that, with some negotiation, they’d love to sell us their home, our dream home. Suffice it to sa , we learned a lot during our first- ime home buying odyssey. But, above all, we learned that there are some things that simply cannot be replaced with the internet and a DIY attitude.
