The Editor Speaks We are proud to say that Mauritius which is a tourist destination has a prominent place in the world as it has in its lap lots to offer in terms of beaches, wildlife sanctuaries, heritage, cultures and much more. Hence, to bridge the gap between the countries of the world, one has to go through the portals of the airlines. For this reason, the Mauritius Tourism News has chosen this jam-packed Airlines Special issue to give an overall knowledge about the airlines access in Mauritius and other related topics. Capacity, debt and fuel prices are the three biggest issues facing airlines, according to world-renowned aviation analyst and consultant Darryl Jenkins. How airlines manage these challenges will shape the future of air travel and impact how we fly over the next 5 to 10 years. When some are for the expansion of their fleets, others are consistently working on strategies to go for partnership with other airlines. Dubai which is the maharaja for it hosts the largest airport in the world is working towards the expansion of its fleet, and Latin America, the U.S. and Asia Pacific are investing for the boost in traffic by innovative business models, good growth and trade links. Such is the fact even though in the U.S., the airline industry is down 41% from last year as shares of 15 major airlines dropped by almost 10%. Hence, the slowing of the economy is obvious even for the lucrative Japanese market. As for the Rainbow Island, its colours are fading away due to the tug of war between the Airline industry and the tourism sector more precisely the Hotels & Resorts industry – our previous issue. Debates are on for the liberalisation of air access to Mauritius. The whole lot of the air travel is in a transition phase be it from its airfares, schedules, consolidation, fleet composition and others. Globally, airlines are struggling to cope with the rising fuel prices which in fact are the starting point for impelling the airline manufacturers to create more fuel-efficient aircrafts in the interest of the environment as well. Going Green will thus remain an important initiative, and this is why we have chosen to present our readers with a broad overview about the ‘Maurice Ile Durable’ project in this issue.

INTERVIEW
Mr. Donald Payen the Executive Vice President, Customer Services and Corporate Communications of Air Mauritius
Air Mauritius is the national carrier and the best airline in the Indian Ocean. However, due to the financial crisis and the inflating price of petrol, not only Air Mauritius, but the whole industry is facing a dire situation. This does not implies in any way that Air Mauritius will not go forward in its approach towards a restructuration programme to face the challenges.

The recovery steps are: (1) Network concentration which relates to suspension of some once-weekly frequencies and consolidation on remaining destinations. They come from the Aldabra Island of Seychelles Archipelago and were brought to Mauritius in 1875 after the request of the Royal Society of Arts and Sciences backed by Charles Darwin as it was feared that the tortoises would become extinct in Aldabra. As for the Stag Park, the Cervus Timorensis was introduced in Mauritius in the year 1639 from the Dutch ship which was commanded by Adrien Van de Stel. Wholly-owned by the government of Dubai, Emirates is often asked about the secret of its success. A passion to be the very best, innovation, a strong management team and astute cost consciousness are amongst the factors that have played an important role. This approach has led to an array of product offerings such as the extremely popular onboard ice system, loaded with hundreds of entertainment channels on demand, and a host of industry firsts. In March 2008, Emirates announced it was the first airline in the world to enable passengers to make authorised onboard mobile phone calls a mile in the sky.

Kenya Airways and Mauritius The existing soft block arrangement with Kenya Airways on the Nairobi route will be evolved into a free flow code share early during the financial year 2012/13 to optimize sales opportunities. Moreover, Kenya Airways and Air Mauritius plan to code share on each other’s network at their respective bases for greater network synergies. The plan is to initially include Mombassa in Kenya and Cairo in Egypt and subsequently more destinations will be added upon availability of traffic rights
Security Security is one of the crucial requirements for Kenya Airways, like: • Essential liquids to be carried on board have to be in a re-sealable clear plastic bag with a capacity of not more than one litre. The same is applied for duty free purchases where the store and customers connecting to further destinations are advised to keep these sealed throughout their journey. • For the Check-in to take place as required, passengers have to arrive at the check points at least three hours before the flight departure. • All checked baggages must have the passenger’s name, address and telephone number or email on the outside of the bag. It is strongly encouraged to put one’s name and address on the inside of the bag

as well should the outside tag be separated from the bag. Kenya Airways may refuse baggage at check-in unless it is labeled. • Passengers may declare a value for your checked baggage in excess of the applicable liability limit. If such a declaration is made, additional charges must be paid in accordance with the regulations. • Lost baggage can be tracked online if a passenger have a file reference number.
Future Plans of KQ KQ intends to increase its destinations; thus adding new flights and for this purpose a plan named Project Mawingu (the Swahili for Clouds) has been launched since April 2012.

I ATA Headquartered in Montreal, Canada, IATA (International Air Transport Association) is an association which regroups all stakeholders in air transport worldwide. IATA’s mission is to help airlines and air transport companies improve their processes and thus, the quality of service they deliver to customers. In line with its commitment to promote Mauritius as an up-market tourist destination, Flymates offers IATA-approved courses to trainees who wish to achieve high standards of customer service.

Safety is also a top priority for IATA which constantly improves the standards and training programs specially designed for the member companies including airlines, travel agencies and cargo companies. IATA’s network is extensive with 70,000 IATA travel agencies worldwide as well as nearly 280 airlines. IATA qualifications are recognized internationally. Flymates, the first IATA-authorized Training Centre in Mauritius, offers a variety of training courses ranging from basic to advanced level and
The fact that Mauritius is a multicultural country and its people are bilingual is a plus as they can adapt more easily when in contact with people across the world. It is an advantage for the Mauritian people to take the opportunity to benefit from such courses as they become more competitive on the work market . Flymates is looking forward to welcome students from Madagascar, Africa and India.
focusing on the aviation, travel and tourism sectors. The IATA International Travel & Tourism Training Program starts with the IATA Foundation Course Diploma which covers the essential skills and knowledge required to sell travel and tourism products and services. Throughout the course, students will learn to handle different tasks such as organizing a trip, conduct a successful sale and ensure proper follow-up once the trip has taken place. The focus is on customer service at all times. Successful students may get the opportunity to join the network of IATA travel agencies. As part of the IATA International Aviation Training Program, Flymates also offers introductory courses aimed at those who want to become flight attendants or work at the airport. For those who might need a bit more flexibility, a range of e-learning courses is also available to students.
“Great holidays start with a pleasant airplane travel experience” …the truth behind the glamorous world of aviation According to Mrs. Marielle Requin, Director of Flymates Ltd., it is worth noting that in Mauritius high standards in terms of safety, security and training are maintained. “Great holidays start with a pleasant airplane travel experience” says Mrs. Requin. Indeed, the travel experience itself can help shape the success of a destination and the way it is perceived worldwide. The director further explained that airline-related jobs are often considered as glamorous and filled with excitement. However, working in the airline industry proves much tougher than it seems and “much too often, people do not realize just how much work is involved.” From the travel agent who plans a trip down to the smallest details to the security guard who makes sure no stone is left unturned to guarantee optimum safety; every job within the industry requires dedication, discipline and energy. One must be prepared to always be ready to adapt to changes and new rules especially after the impact of the 11th September 2001. The co director emphasizes: “You have to be knowledgeable, flexible and bear in mind that you are responsible for the safety and security of the passengers in addition to the commercial service and comfort. That’s why it is crucial that people need a lot of specific skills including problem solving skills as the least carelessness will impact very negatively.” The personnel of Flymates is happy with the results obtained since the beginning of its operation in 2009, and satisfied in terms of recruitment of its students in prestigious airlines and other organizations.

Closing of
Shopping Fiesta in Mahebourg After its round as from 29th of June through Bagatelle, Trianon, Rose-Belle, Rose Hill, Port Louis, Flacq and Goodlands, the Shopping Fiesta came to its end on the 5th of August in the historic village of Mahebourg.
P
resent on this occasion were the Honorable Robert Desvaux; the President of the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority, Mr. Karl Mootoosamy; the Chairman of the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority, Honorable Michael Sik Yuen; Minister of Tourism and Leisure, Honorable JIM Sitaram; Minister of Business Enterprise and Cooperatives and Honorable Thierry Henry; Parliamentary Private Secretary amongst other dignitaries.
A cocktail was served after which each of the guests of honour delivered their speech on a satisfactory note. Apart from the drawing of lots, there was also a price giving ceremony for the winners of the Regatta, the fishermen competition, and other games entitled ‘Professionals’ and ‘Ecole de Voile’ for teens. The day ended with the multicolored performances of local music artists like Clarel Armel et Kadans Tropikal, Denis Claude Gaspard, Zenfan Dodo, l’OSB Crew, Group Saturday and Groupe Zulu. The regatta and the carnival which have been a success are in fact the starting point to find new ideas and new avenues so as to constantly rebound on the tourism side. From the messages of the Ministers and the response from the Mauritians and international public, it is clear, that the closing of the Shopping Fiesta is just another beginning to explore Mauritius on a new horizon other than its natural beauty of land and sea or hospitality.

We are an island of competitiveness - the fact that we are all in one, it means that Mauritius is an island where you have the sea product, the hotel product, the in land product, and many more but the shopping icon is a new one where we need to adapt the laws and control the quality and after 2 years for sure Mauritius will be one of the best selling point.
