A beautiful golden sun is setting. The sky is on fire. The CAMERA starts to move downwards. A large neon sign rises into shot. It rests on top of a skyscraper and fills the frame. The building is neither past nor future in design but a bit of both. Slowly we pan downwards revealing the city that spreads below ... A glittering conglomeration of elevated transport tubes, smaller square buildings which are merely huge, with, here and there, the comparatively minuscule relics of previous ages of architecture, pavement level awnings suggesting restaurants and shops ... Transparent tubes carry whizzing transport cages past us ... an elevated highway carrying traffic composed primarily of large transport lorries passes thru frame. As we descend, the sunlight is blocked out and street lights & neon signs take over as illumination. Eventually we reach the upper levels of a plush shopping precinct.

INTERVIEWER Do you think that the government is winning the battle against terrorists? HELPMANN On yes. Our morale is much higher than theirs, we're fielding all their strokes, running a lot of them out, and pretty consistently knocking them for six. I'd say they're nearly out of the game. The TECHNICIAN is tottering on one leg on the chair on the desk as he strains to swat the BEETLE. Swish, swash, oops, WHAP! Gottcha!! INTERVIEWER But the bombing campaign is now in its thirteenth year ... HELPMANN Beginner's luck. The BEETLE's career comes to a halt ... squashed flat on the brilliantly clean ceiling ... or has it? As the TECHNICIAN clambers down from the rickety heights, the BEETLE's carcass comes unstuck from the ceiling and drops silently into the typewriting machine which hiccoughs, hesitates and then types BUTTLE has been carried out of herthen bedroom and dumped into the letter "B" and hesitates and continues so that the the of is her screaming mother. Interviewer Deputy minister, what do you believe is be hind this recent increase in terrorist bombings?

Version 1 Good aspects are: 1 Good leadings and font size 2 Symmetrical layout – running heads and chapter titles aligned centered and the margins are the same, providing a traditional feeling. Things need improvement are: 3 Lack of variations – all of the contents set in Palatino Linotype 4 Waste of space – each chapter title occupies 2 lines with space before and after. The dialogue columns is a bit too short, not economical.

Gilliam developed the story and wrote the first draft of the screenplay with Charles Alverson, who was paid for his work but was ultimately uncredited in the final film. For nearly 20 years, Gilliam denied that Alverson had made any material contribution to the script. But then when the first draft was published and original in-progress documents emerged from Alverson’s files, Gilliam begrudgingly changed his story. This was a bit late for either credit on the film or a listing on the failed Oscar nomination for Alverson. He has said that he would not have minded the Oscar nomination, even though he didn’t think much of the script or the finished film. Gilliam, McKeown, and Stoppard collaborated on further drafts. Brazil was developed under the titles The Ministry and 1984½, the latter a nod not only to Orwell’s original 1984 but also to 8½ by Federico Fellini, a director whom Gilliam often cites as one of the defining influences on his visual style when directing. During the film’s production, other working titles floated about, including The Ministry of Torture, How I Learned to Live with the System – So Far, and So That’s Why the Bourgeoisie Sucks, before settling with Brazil relating to the name of its escapist signature tune. Gilliam sometimes refers to this film as the second in his ‘Trilogy of Imagination’ films, starting with Time Bandits (1981) and ending with The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1989). All are about the ‘craziness of our awkwardly ordered society and the desire to escape it through whatever means possible.’ All three movies focus on these struggles and attempts to escape them through

Version 4 Two improvements are: 1 Adjust the font from Lucida Sans to Scala Sans. Lucida is a font family with a great number of variations. It can convey formal and documental feelings. Though it has been used for screen and publications, it may not be that modern as Scala Sans. Personally, I think Scala Sans matches Palatino better, because they shares proportional figures and hand-written features (humannist styles). I also tried Avenir and Frutiger. It is said that Frutiger considers Avenir his finest work. I think these two fonts are geometric. They are not very suitable for literature works, though it can be modern to combine San Serif font with Serif one. 2 Align all the contents to baseline grid. This is to make the passage tidy based on english writting styles.
