DESIGN & DECOR You might be floating on cloud nine when you’re in Cabo, however, if you take a moment to look down on where you’re actually stepping you’ll realize that flooring in a home with that is close the beach and the ocean is important, especially if you have a pool. It not only plays a significant part in the feel and style of the house, but there are also certain floors that work well in a tropical/humid climate and some that don’t.
how to choose
FLOORING for your beach home
The floor around your pool and outdoor area will most likely be the same, so make sure you find something that not only looks good, but that will also function well with the elements. Choose a material that is resistant to mold, algae and chemicals. Bare feet will be in contact with this floor, so pick a heat-reflective material to keep the surface cool and another important factor to consider is to choose a material that does not become slippery when wet. Wood decks are pleasing to the eye and provide a natural, yet elegant look. Wood can be costly but there is a range of types and pricing depending on your budget. It requires steady maintenance year-round, especially in Cabo where the ocean is near. Synthetic decking is a good alternative to wood, without the need for much maintenance and can last a long time. Since it comes in planks or tiles it’s easy to install. Waterproof options are available, making it ideal for pool decking. S t y l e : Naturally elegant. T i p s : be prepared to deal with constant maintenance
4
unless you go with the synthetic route. In this case be sure to choose one that doesn’t look fake or low quality. Brick is durable but must be maintained because it is susceptible to mold which can cause it to be slippery. S t y l e : Classic charm. T i p s : Choose a type of brick that isn’t too irregular so it doesn’t hurt your feet when you walk on it. Concrete gives a modern and contemporary feel, it can be dyed with different colors and it’s easy to maintain. S t y l e : Modern. T i p s : Add pebbles or texture to make the surface slipresistant. Stone is another very commonly used material for flooring. There are many types of stone, such as travertine, sandstone, marble, limestone, granite, among many others. Stone can be expensive, but if you’re looking for a natural feel this is a good choice. Darker colors absorb more heat than lighter colors, so choose wisely if you think you’ll be using it outdoors. For indoors, stone floors are ideal for kitchens and bathrooms. S t y l e : Naturally sleek. T i p s : Wood and fabric help absorb sound in a room with stone flooring. Saltillo (terracota) tile is an ideal option for indoor and outdoor flooring if you have a beach home in Cabo. This tile will give your house a true Mexican feel and it is very easy to maintain. S t y l e : Mexican hacienda. T i p s : Glazed tiles are not recommended for outdoor pool areas as it can be very slippery. Now that you know the basics about ideal flooring for your beach home you can go ahead and take those “first steps” into choosing the right flooring. i

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
CABO DEL SOL By Justine Schock, REmexico Real Estate Agent, Justine@CaboRealEstate.com
CABO DEL SOL is a gated 1,800-acre master-planned resort community located approximately five miles from downtown Cabo San Lucas or a 15-minute drive to San Jose del Cabo. Established in 1992, Cabo Del Sol has become a highly sought-after mix of single-family homes, building lots, hotels and condominiums. Homeowners at Cabo Del Sol enjoy access to the 18-hole Tom Weiskopf designed Desert Course as well as the 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature designed Ocean Course, which was voted “The Best Los Cabos Golf Course for Experienced Players” by Golf Digest in January 2016. There are many well-established neighborhoods within Cabo Del Sol development including Las Brisas, Las Colinas, Las Posadas, La Rivera, El Peñon, Buena Vista, Vista Azul, Palmaritos, and Puerta Del Sol. Most homes tend to be in keeping with Mexican Hacienda style architecture, many of which feature entry courtyards, separate casitas, private pools and sweeping ocean and/ or fairway views. Within the community you will also find Sheraton Hacienda del Mar Hotel, Fiesta Americana
6
Grand Los Cabos, a pro shop, and a Club House with a fine dining restaurant. The Cabo Del Sol website explains, “The restaurant at Cabo del Sol is a vibrant gathering place for locals, golfers, and guests who want to enjoy a relaxed meal with friends and loved ones overlooking the spectacular Pacific coastline.” Don’t miss their famous Sunday brunch, which comes highly recommended by many locals! The Puerta Del Sol neighborhood has its own set of amenities serving the 69 luxury condominiums and 14 villas within, including three infinity pools, a state of the art fitness center, spa, meeting space, and underground parking. Condos currently on the market at Puerta Del Sol start in the high $400’s up to $1.6 million, whereas singlefamily homes in Cabo Del Sol currently range from the high $800’s up to $3 million. I caught up with my friend Jolette who purchased one of the first homes in the development with her husband Bob back in 1999 and has been enjoying fall and winter here
ever since. When asked what she likes most about living in Cabo Del Sol, she explained, “Right now, the security in Cabo del Sol is very important and we have always felt safe here. The view is beautiful and watching the whales from the house. I especially like going for walks in the morning. I never hesitate to go out alone…I love to listen to the birds and look for all the ones I have seen over the years.” Owners in Cabo Del Sol can walk or drive to the private beach access located next to the Sheraton Hacienda Del Mar, which is an easy 10-minute walk away from the furthest home in the development. The beach is much quieter than other public beaches along the Sea of Cortez, with only a few vendors allowed. “The best part is the quiet neighborhood. I like the sound of the waves at certain times of the year as it reaches all the way to my house. Our family all loves to come for a visit to swim in the pool and enjoy the beach,” explains Jolette. So, if you are in the market for a home in a peaceful gated community with stunning natural beauty and lots of Mexican charm, Cabo Del Sol may be just the place for you. Quivira Los Cabos by Justine Schock, REmexico Real Estate Agent, Justine@CaboRealEstate.com

magine waking up to the sound of crashing waves and looking out your window to sweeping ocean and golf course views. This dream can be a reality at Quivira Los Cabos! Quivira is an 1,850-acre master-planned community on the Pacific Ocean side of the Baja peninsula, about 10 minutes north of downtown Cabo San Lucas. Quivira is known for its Jack Nicklaus designed golf course and three-mile stretch of untouched beaches. One of the great things about Quivira is that they have four distinct neighborhoods at different price points, which makes living the Cabo dream achievable for everyone. They even offer attractive financing programs and pricing incentives, which can be hard to find in Mexico. Quivira is currently selling homes in Mavila, Copala, Coronado and Montecristo. Mavila is the newest addition to the Quivira family, and the most budget friendly with preconstruction homes starting at $190,000usd. The new “pueblito” style home concept will offer owners condos that look more like townhomes than traditional condominiums. “The central “village” is comprised of two- and three-story buildings which have single level one-, two-, or three-bedroom condos. The more privileged top floor condos have an included roof-top terrace. The buildings are distributed around three community pools and are connected via winding footpaths that lace through fountain-studded courtyards. Along the fairway are threebedroom two-story single-family homes, and the next phase will introduce a handful of towers with two- and three-bedroom condos,” explains Ryan Winegar, Sales Manager at Quivira. Next up is Copala; a mix of two- and three-bedroom condominiums and four- and fivebedroom single-family residences. Owners interested in the residence portion of Copala can choose between seven different floor plans, ranging from 1,800 to 2,400 square feet. “The entire community sits up high in the center of Quivira looking down over the Pacific Ocean” describes Winegar. Owners have access to the 38,000-square foot Copala Clubhouse, which includes a stunning pool, massage rooms, movie theater, deli, gym, meeting rooms and more. The views from Copala are absolutely breathtaking! Coronado is my probably my favorite of Quivira’s offerings, an exclusive community designed for 64 single level villas. Each three-, four- or five-bedroom villa features expansive terraces with unobstructed ocean views. Owners can choose from a wide variety of finishes to customize their home and truly make it their own. I love the old-world hacienda style of Coronado, and the contrast between wood beamed ceilings, high end appliances, granite, marble and stone. Each home comes with its own custom designed family crest at the entryway. Its special touches like these that make Coronado a one of a kind place to live! Last, but certainly not least, are The Private Residences at Montecristo, featuring 18 luxury Tuscan-style homes. Winegar explains, “Montecristo is a small private section of hillside homes with its own entrance and security but with access to hotel amenities. The threebedroom two-level homes are fully furnished, turn-key and enjoy both service from and access to the amenities of the Montecristo Clubhouse and the Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach Resort & Hotel.” Homes in Montecristo include an infinity pool, jacuzzi, large terraces, and spacious design. Both Coronado and Montecristo start in the upper million-dollar range. All owners at Quivira have access to the Quivira Golf Club and many other first-class amenities including restaurants, gyms, award winning spas, and optional golf club and private yacht club memberships. And the new toll road from the San Jose International Airport makes getting there easier than before. No matter what neighborhood you choose, you can’t go wrong with a home in Quivira Los Cabos!

DESTINATIONS
LORETO Dating back to 1697 when Jesuit explorer Juan Maria Salvatierra founded the Mision Neustria Señora de Loreto, the town of Loreto has remained one of Baja’s treasures. Surrounded by the towering Giganta Sierra Mountains to the west and the shimmering expanse of the Sea of Cortez to the east, they provide the perfect backdrop for outdoor activities. Loreto’s coastline offers five dramatic islands; Isla Carmen, Isla Coronado, Isla Danzante, Isla Montserrat and Isla Catalina, which are all part of the Loreto National Marine Park. This great 100-mile long stretch of sea that hugs Baja’s peninsula in the Sea of Cortez is refuge to a diversity of marine life and home to over 800 species of fish. Is snorkeling your thing? From June to November visibility can reach 100 plus feet and this is an excellent time to explore. It’s not uncommon to jump into the open bluewater to snorkel with passing whales while on your way out to a dive site. The Sea of Cortez is known for its schools of dolphins, whale pods, sea turtles and sea lion harems, and of course, there is always the chance of meeting with the giant manta rays,

hammerhead sharks and seasonal whale sharks. Brilliantlycolored sea fans, black coral and invertebrate life blankets the rocky structures of the reefs which open up into a rainbow of color. Loreto offers an International Airport which is served daily from California and excellent tourism services -- including hotels, restaurants, RV parks and campgrounds. The parade of fishermen from around the world in search of incredible inshore and offshore fishing begins in June and continues until September. The surrounding islands offer remarkable sportfishing with an abundance of fish, i.e., yellowtail, sailfish, dorado, marlin, tuna and roosterfish. Daily trips can be booked with a variety of companies on everything from open pangas to elaborate sophisticated cruisers at very reasonable prices. Many of the Captains and pangeros are second and third generation fishermen who have been fishing since they were children and possess a remarkable wealth of local knowledge and experience.
Even if you are not a fisherman, watching the boats zip into the Marina between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. in the afternoon to unload their catch is always exciting. Kayaking offers the opportunity to explore the desert islands and to view the Sierra Giganta Mountains rising out of the sea with their red-hued desert colors set against the azure blue water. Mountain bikes: There are plenty of back roads with beautiful views of the Sea of Cortez where the desert meets the sea. Bike tours may be arranged with several local operations. Of course there are the more traditional activities which include Golf, Tennis, Horseback Riding and the beaches. There are five major beaches located in the Loreto area, all easily accessible to the public … Nopolo, Tripui, Isla Coronado, Playa Loreto, and Isla del Carmen. Rated first and second by Trip Advisor, the stand-out Loreto resorts and hotels are Villa del Palmar Beach Resort & Spa at The Islands of Loreto and Hotel La Misión. Villa Del Palmar at the Islands of Loreto provided a unique setting last year for their first annual Islands of Loreto Fishing & Golf Tournament. This year, from July 27-July 29, the second annual fishing and golf tournament will take place; the two competitions in one will offer $10,000 U.S. dollars in prizes plus a 4-night, 5-day stay in a Deluxe Studio at the Villa del Palmar, a prize valued at over $1,500.00 U.S. Described in their brochure as a luxurious 181-room hotel
set on an astounding natural setting along the shore of Danzante Bay, it is part of a 4,447-acre resort that features unspoiled beauty. It offers three different restaurants, five swimming pools, a 39,000-square-foot luxury spa, tennis courts, and miles of hiking trails, glassbottomed kayaks, sport fishing, and a nearly finished Rees Jones-designed golf course— in short, every modern amenity a Baja Tourist could hope for. I was there last year, and am planning on attending again this July. I hope to see you there. Hotel La Misión managed by Maria Gámez, General Manager, is a stunning, recently-remodeled, elegant resort with a contemporary European-Mexican Hacienda style which reflects the Old Mission flavor of Loreto and is the perfect place for those who are searching for a unique glimpse of the birthplace of Baja. Overlooking the Malecón, it offers a stunning view of the sparkling Sea of Cortez.
Even if you are not a fisherman, watching the boats zip into the Marina between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. in the afternoon to unload their catch is always exciting.

Loreto was the first town I visited decades ago when the roads were too rough to travel with my nine-year old son. Having returned again for the umpteenth time last month, I was pleased to hear the enthusiasm from the community leaders about their many plans and efforts and I was able to see the results for myself. If beauty and serenity and a step back in time are on your agenda for a vacation, this is one treasure of Baja you should see for yourself. Loreto never disappoints its visitors. i
