FEATURED BODYBUILDER RICARDO BASCOMBE Ricardo Bascombe first started training at the age of 13 at a gym situated in the yard of the Weston Fire Service station. Motivated by the TV series ‘The Incredible Hulk’, Ricardo’s first competition was at the Mr. Junior Barbados Championship in August 1990, where he placed 4th. His next competition was in 1994 at the Mr. St Michael competition where he also placed 4th. However, later in 1997 at the Mr. Barbados Light Heavy Weight Champ, Ricardo soared to 1st place defeating other promising contenders. Ricardo continued to compete in many other competitions after. In 1998 Ricardo placed 2 nd at the Mr. St Michael’s competition and later in 2000 he also landed 2nd place in the Light Heavy category. However, his greatest achievement came when he won Mr. Bridgetown in March 2001 and later in April 2001 when he won best legs, chest, back, arms and most muscular in the Mr. St Michael competition. Ricardo also came first at the Mr. Barbados Championships in August the same year where he competed in the Super Middle Weight class. I’ve gained more respect from friends, family and the wider community from participating in body building. I’ve also realised that patience, dedication and discipline is the backbone of becoming a true bodybuilder. I do enjoy the health benefits that come with being a bodybuilder.” 9

By Dr. Andrew Forde

PHYTOPHOTODERMATITIS Phytophotodermatitis is a blistering skin condition caused by the reaction between plant chemicals and sunlight. The bizarre blistering and hyperpigmentation can be baffling for patients and doctors.

Dr. Forde’s Office is located in the Pine Medical Centre, Suite 3, 3rd Ave, Belleville, St Michael, Barbados . Telephone (246) 429 5863 Email: skindeeo@caribsurf.com

The most common plant family that causes this condition is the Umbelliferae family. The main photosensitising substances found in these plants are furocoumarins, which consist of psoralens and 5-methoxypsoralens. These chemicals are used with ultraviolet light to treat Psoriasis. When the skin comes into contact with these plants or their cuttings, linear vesicular lesions and brown streaks occur after exposure to sunlight. This reaction occurs within minutes or within 24 hours and reaches a peak at 48-72 hours. The areas heal leaving dark patches. Treatment of this dermatitis requires wet compresses and topical corticosteroids. Antihistamines are sometimes used to reduce itching.

SOUTH COAST DAIQUIRI & GRILL Timothy Jordan is the Owner and Manager of South Coast Daiquiri & Grill located in St. Lawrence Gap, next to Dover Market. Open in May 2013, this is Timothy’s first experience as owner of a bar/restaurant. However, with several years experience as a personal chef in the United States; Timothy’s was prepared to take on the challenges that ownership and managing will soon bring.

Born to a Barbadian father, Timothy’s dad would bring my brother and I here every year. I am Bajan and wanted to return to Barbados to open my business. I love the people here and wanted to bring the best of me back home. I chose the name South Coast Daiquiri & Grill because it describes our location and what we do best. I imported" top of the line" daiquiri machines from the Daiquiri Capital- New Orleans, Louisiana rather than use a simple blender. My daiquiri mix is made with fruit puree and quality liquors. My dream was to introduce authentic daiquiris to the island along with great food! I have passion for cooking and my menu is fueled with that passion. I have one of the best burgers on the island! Its called "Burger in Paradise". We also serve killer buffalo wings, chips, salads, local fresh fish and beers/bar drinks. Must Try- Burger in Paradise and a 190 Octane Daiquiri.

We host a great Karaoke Night Friday Nights-9 pm-til close and a Poetry Slam on Saturday nights. We also host/ cater Art Shows, Birthday Parties, etc. We are a wonderful late lunch destination. We cater to both tourists and locals, alike! Every customer is a good customer! We pride ourselves on our friendly service and feel at home atmosphere! We want every customer to feel as if they've just made a new friend. I am a "hands on" manager and encourage my staff to follow suit. We've gotten some excellent reviews on Tripadvisor and are currently number 9 out of 29 restaurants in the Gap.

DARINGLY SEXY SWIMWEAR BY LATOYA DANIEL Since childhood Latoya Daniel found ordinary to be boring. She would hide with a pair of scissors knowing it was forbidden; but, needing to break the rules to cut her dolls’ clothes to make them more unique, Latoya daringly and privately created. She never dreamed of being a fashion designer but the world of fashion was always a part of her future plans; Latoya wanted to be a model. Though so shy and unaware of how she would get into that “fashionista” world with her socially awkward behavior, Latoya during her teenage years grew in confidence and started modeling at local shows. She designed her outfits for photo shoots and for events which she attended. Latoya’s personal style was described by some as “too extra”, “too daring” and “too risqué”. At first this bothered her but not enough to weaken her resolve; instead she was motivated to embrace it. In 2013 Latoya was going through a rough time and while flying to another country to escape the chaos the brand Daresqué was born. She gazed at the clouds thinking of a name for the brand that would best describe her - the girl who never fits in, but stands out and is unapologetic for her style and attitude. Latoya wrote on a napkin, DARE and RISQUE, two words to describe herself and combined it into one 16 DARESQUE! The inspiration behind the swimwear

conceptualizes confidence in you as a woman and a personality that dares to stand to out. The mission is to create the customer satisfaction that clients feel proud to represent the brand of Daresqué, they Dare to be Risqué! The response to Daresqué’s launch was “dare I say” surprisingly positive. She was a bit scared to check social media the next day LOL. However, responses and support has been great! Orders have been coming consistently and even some boutiques outside of Barbados have shown interest. Latoya expects the brand to grow internationally which will take time, dedication, hard work and consistency; characteristics and virtues Latoya is willing and ready to give. Some unforeseen hiccups were encountered along the way but with a resilient nature Latoya is able to use stones thrown at her as stepping stones to progression, rather than let them delay her progress. The Daresqué website will be launching before summer and Latoya is very excited daily as she watches it all unfold. Latoya now understands the meaning of ‘blood, sweat and tears’ especially when the business is yours. There are sleepless nights, headaches, and anxiety. But, there is also ambition, determination, excitement, faith, courage and an inner belief that Daresqué will become a well-known brand locally and internationally. RUM SHOP Talk So many shops from so many parishes, and they all have a new and interesting story to tell. In Barbados it is the rum shops that provide a personal atmosphere. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet many wonderful people in all of these places. The Rum Shop, an institution of village life, much in evidence in present society today should be re-created as part of the Heritage celebrations. Why? As society develops institutions are created to service the needs of the community, the rum shop is one such pivotal institution for our society. The Rum Shop served as a meeting point for society’s more colourful members. The Rum Shop is often seen as common ground, where people from all walks of life could meet and feel the pulse of society, exchange ideas and refresh themselves. Some rum shops double as little grocery stores, but most are small, individual establishments. They are everywhere, dotting the streets and roadsides of the island’s towns and villages. The rum shop is a local institution.

Ordering Rum To get the attention of the proprietor, you have to slam your money on the counter and demand what you want. Quart Those with means order a quart to be taken home. Flask For the less well off, a flask is a small, flat bottle containing 35-40% proof that four can share in one round with a chaser. Pitie, Nip or Mix The smaller ‘Nip’ or a ‘Mix’ is for three. The ‘Half nip’ is shared between two friends. The ‘Mix’ is a deceptively sweet combination of Falernum (a sweet rum liquor from Barbados) and rum. ‘Anba Contwè’, or ‘Under-the-Counter’ is a secret brew of herbs steeped in alcohol with supposed aphrodisiac qualities. Shot A ‘Shot’ is an individual amount of strong rum, served in a small glass that is tossed down the throat.

WHAT IS STRESS

Bajan Sun Magazine

JUN 2014

By Norma T. Hollis

Stress is the "wear and tear" our bodies experience as we adjust to our continually changing environment; it has physical and emotional effects on us and can create positive or negative feelings.

Norma T. Hollis

America’s Leading Authentic Voice DoctorŽ Mentor, Transformational Artist ~ Visionary Advocate of the Human Spirit

As a positive influence, stress can help push us into action; it can result in a new awareness and an exciting new perspective. As a negative influence, it can result in feelings of distrust, rejection, anger, and depression, which in turn can lead to health problems such as headaches, upset stomach, rashes, insomnia, ulcers, high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. With the death of a loved one, the birth of a child, a job promotion, or a new relationship, we experience stress as we readjust our lives. In adjusting to different circumstances, stress will help or hinder us depending on how we react to it. There have been many different definitions of what stress is, depending on whose addressing it. What complicates this is that we all feel that we know what stress is, as it is something we have all experienced. A definition should therefore be obvious...except that it is not. Different people experience different aspects of stress and because of that they may define stress differently.

During a stressful situation, the brain signals the release of stress hormones. These chemical substances trigger a series of responses that gives the body extra energy: blood-sugar levels rise, the heartbeat and blood pressure increases. The muscles tense for action. The blood supply is diverted away from the stomach to the hand and foot to help the body deal with the situation at hand. Stress is with us all the time. It comes from mental or emotional activity, as well as physical activity. It is unique and personal to each of us. So personal, that what may be relaxing to one person may be stressful to another. For example, if you are an executive who likes to keep busy all the time, or someone who is constantly on the go, "taking it easy" at the beach on a beautiful day may feel extremely frustrating, nonproductive and upsetting. You may be emotionally distressed from "doing nothing."

People feel little stress when they have the time, experience and resources to manage a situation. They feel great stress when they think they can't handle the demands put upon them. Stress is therefore a negative experience. And it is not an unavoidable consequence of an event: It depends a lot on people's perceptions of a situation and their real ability to cope with it. Without stress, life would be dull and unexciting. Stress adds flavor, challenge and opportunity to life. Too much stress, however, can seriously affect your physical, spiritual and mental well-being. A major challenge in today's stress-filled world is to make the stress in your life work for you instead of against you.

TOP SIX SAFE COMPUTING TIPS: 1) Patch, Patch, PATCH! Set up your computer for automatic software and operating system updates. An unpatched machine is more likely to have software vulnerabilities that can be exploited. 2) Install protective software. Sophos is available as a free download for Windows, Macintosh, and Linux from IS&T's software page. When installed, the software should be set to scan your files and update your virus definitions on a regular basis. 3) Choose strong passwords. Choose strong passwords with letters, numbers, and special characters to create a mental image or an acronym that is easy for you to remember. Create a different password for each important account, and change passwords regularly. 4)

AUDIO LABBS STUDIOS Mr. Teddy Calderon a Barbadian producer who opened his recording studio Audiolabb Studios , in Barbados 2005 on the south of the island in the quaint neighborhood of Britton Hill, he later relocated to Mangrove St Peter, where he boost about the beauty of the studio and the magnificent view it has. Mr. Calderon prides himself with some of the latest video/ audio gear and soft ware, such as Protools HD, Api mic preamps’, condenser mics, my Tech converters , canon cameras, prime lenses etc that he uses to produce videos, music and mixed songs for Local and international recording artist. My dreams are to have some of the best music out there with a great team of people working with me, making sure that everything runs smooth keeping the fans and clients happy so we can expand our influences. The talented people I work with in the studio are awesome, it’s not always fun and games but, we keep it professional after all it is a journey in which we all need each other to succeed, people Like Tricia Clarke “song write”, Clive Blacket “marketing and promotion Dappa Dan “recording artist”, Realshomari “recording artist” The Mole “ recording artist” and I can go on but these guys are awesome and give off a great vibe with their own original Ideas, that’s also another thing I can say we pride ourselves on, originality and not being afraid to try different things. Having a great sounding recording is an A+ and it works in your favor, after all the average joe can tell when a recording sounds like crap but he can’t explain why so we need to pay attention to that warm and rich sound that makes the singer sound like a million bucks and It also puts your recording in the spot light. The music industry has a lot of different avenues to market your music and get out there but you have to understand how it works, everyone thinks it’s a cut and dry business but there are some things you need to understand about it. Knowing your business gives you and your team a great advantage and that goes a long way. So any time you are in Barbados or you live in Barbados and want to check us out give us a call or email us we will be glad to have you over for a tour. audiolabbstudio@gmail.com (246)251-7406 www.bajansunonline.com/MAGAZINE/ | info@bajansunonline.com | @BajanSunOnline

THINK LOCAL FIRST WHY BUY LOCALLY OWNED There are many well-documented benefits to our communities and to each of us to choosing local, independently owned businesses. We realize it is not always possible to buy what you need locally and so merely ask you to Think Local FIRST! Top Ten reasons to Think Local – Buy Local – Be Local Buy Local — Support yourself: Several studies have shown that when you buy from an independent, locally owned business, rather than a nationally owned businesses, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and farms — continuing to strengthen the economic base of the community. Support community groups: Non-profit organizations receive an average 250% more support from smaller business owners than they do from large businesses. Keep our community unique: Where we shop, where we eat and have fun — all of it makes our community home. Our one-of-a-kind businesses are an integral part of the distinctive character of this place. Our tourism businesses also benefit. “When people go on vacation they generally seek out destinations that offer them the sense of being someplace, not just anyplace.” ~ Richard Moe, President, National Historic Preservation Trust Reduce environmental impact: Locally owned businesses can make more local purchases requiring less transportation and generally set up shop in town or city centers as opposed to developing on the fringe. This generally means contributing less to sprawl, congestion, habitat loss 32 and pollution.

Create more good jobs: Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally and in our community, provide the most jobs to residents. Get better service: Local businesses often hire people with a better understanding of the products they are selling and take more time to get to know customers.

Invest in community: Local businesses are owned by people who live in this community, are less likely to leave, and are more invested in the community’s future. Put your taxes to good use: Local businesses in town centers require comparatively little infrastructure investment and make more efficient use of public services as compared to nationally owned stores entering the community. Buy what you want, not what someone wants you to buy: A marketplace of tens of thousands of small businesses is the best way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term. A multitude of small businesses, each selecting products based not on a national sales plan but on their own interests and the needs of their local customers, guarantees a much broader range of product choices. Encourage local prosperity: A growing body of economic research shows that in an increasingly homogenized world, entrepreneurs and skilled workers are more likely to invest and settle in communities that preserve their oneof-a-kind businesses and distinctive character. Think local first + Buy local when you can = Being a local!

POETS & AUTHORS Robert Gibson - Passion Poet

Iris Flow

Robert Gibson (PassionPoet, or Passion, for short) is a member of the League of Extraordinary Poets (LXP) in Bar bados and enjoys painting sensual images with his words, leading his audience into a sensory experience. Although sexuality and sensuality are his main forte, in his own words he says, "Passion is not always about sex." Passion is anger, sorrow, enthusiasm - his poems are written to evoke intensity. He has been writing from age 14 and has published EROTIC, his first anthology of poems, which is available on Amazon or from the author himself at http://www.facebook.com/ eroticaanthology.

Iris Flow is a writer and spoken word artist. Her aim is to inspire her fans by awakening the borders of real life issues which pertain to her poetry.

In 2011, Robert entered the National Independence Festival of Creative Arts (NIFCA), the national arts festival of his native Barbados with three poems – Luscious, Rain, and Goblet. All three of the poems achieved awards – Luscious received a silver award, and Goblet and Rain received bronze awards. He also received the Most Promising Poet award for the year.

Iris started writing when she was 16 years old. She explains that she always used to like to write her thoughts down, and one day wrote her first sonnet. She’s never stopped since, writing on a myriad of life situations like heartbreak and even death with an eye for metaphor and imagery. She has recently stepped into the spoken word arena and has her first spoken word video out on Youtube. (“Reasons For Existing https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePxlT41pawI)

In 2012, Robert entered NIFCA again and his poem Tribute received a bronze award. His poetry has been published in local, regional and online anthologies, such as the local National Cultural Foundation’s (NCF) Winning Words anthology, the Caribbean Writer and the online St. Somewhere Journal E-zine. He has recently ventured into hosting open mics as well – he is the cohost of two Barbadian spoken word spots – Sensations Poetry and Music Night and Passionate Flow He is a prolific writer, writing something almost every day, and posting to his blog at http://poetwhispers.wordpress.com. BENEFITS OF

PRIVATE TUTORING English and Math Tutoring Course If your aim is to improve your aptitude and knowledge base in a particular field, all education pertaining to this subject will useful. If this statement is assumed true, then the benefits afforded by private tuition are enormous. You will have the advantage of a whole teacher to yourself, with their lesson plans and strategies of teaching designed just for you! It seems impossible to doubt the enormous benefits this will offer. In a classroom, one teacher may be faced with around thirty pupils, each with different abilities, different rates of learning, and individual strengths and weaknesses; yet despite this, for the majority of the lesson the teacher will be forced to treat his class as if it contained just one student. He or she will orate from one end of the classroom, unable to gauge how effectively each pupil is assimilating the lesson. The lesson plans will be designed to fit the needs of the average pupil; and the teacher will proceed at a rate suitable for the average pupil. In this environment it is all to easy for a bright child or adolescent to fail to grasp one particular point, as the swathe of teacher talk washes over them like the unrelenting tides. It is unlikely even the best of teachers would spot the particular point of misunderstanding cast on the countenance on one pupil, hidden amongst so many other faces. To draw attention to their lack of understanding can be intimidating for the pupil: everyone else is silent, so they must have understood. Do I want to draw attention to myself? All too often the misunderstanding goes unexpressed and unaided. The obvious benefit of one to one tuition is that the tutor can tailor their teaching style to the abilities of their student. They will be able to gauge the level of the pupils understanding, and, more importantly, track down the sources of misunderstanding, and deal with them effectively. Away from the bustle of the classroom, the student will feel more able to voice their difficulties; and having just one pupil to deal with, the teacher will be more capable of resolving them.
