BCCPAC Helping Put Business-Friendly Candidates in Office

Well, the election year is in full swing! For months now, we’ve
been hearing about who’s in and who’s out, who’s raising money and who has a war chest for the office they’re seeking. The Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce (BCCPAC) had its first meeting of the election cycle and took a look at all the positions locally and statewide where we must have a voice on behalf of business. We’ll be weighing in on a number of races--endorsing and supporting business friendly candidates who are committed to making sure that the legislative and regulatory environment doesn’t create additional burdens for business. This costs money and this is where we need your help. We hope you will make a contribution to the BCCPAC--$100, $500, $1,000 or more! As you may recall, the BCCPAC played a key role in the 16 Senate District special election last year—endorsing Andy Vidak—and even running a phone bank on behalf of local business. Our efforts helped get him elected. Our state legislature will be grappling with a number of big issues important to the Valley and to Kern County specifically, including an oil severance tax and hydraulic fracturing and we need to make sure that the right people are in office when those decisions are made. And of course there will be a spate of other bills they deal with regularly that impact business. This year’s election will require lots of hard work, at all levels, to make sure we have the right people in office. Let me tell you a little bit more about our PAC. BCCPAC endorses and funds candidates for office, and all PAC funds are separate from funds of the Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce. BCCPAC has a separate governing board, which does include some representation from the Chamber’s Board of Directors. BCCPAC may also support issues with funding. The Bakersfield Chamber’s Political Action Committee is a state and local PAC. GRC Gains Insight into Controversial Bay Delta Conservation Plan Story continued from page 1... Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta at the Chamber. The presentation was part of GRC’s ongoing look at issues important to business. BDCP, only one part of California’s overall water portfolio, is being developed as a 50-year habitat conservation plan that focuses on water supply reliability to 25 million people and more than 3 million acres of farmland. According to Heiland, the $24.7 billion BDCP would create or save roughly 1.1 million full-time equivalent jobs in the state; infuse $84 billion into the State’s economy and from the environmental
perspective contribute to the conservation of 56 species of fish, plants and wildlife in the Delta through protection and enhancements and stressor reduction measures. The Draft Bay Delta Conservation Plan (BDCP) and associated Draft Environmental Impact Report/Environmental Impact Statement (EIR/ EIS) are now available for public review. The Public Comment period extends to June 13, 2014 and comments must be received electronically or postmarked on or before that date. Creating a Network to Develop the Community’s Future Leaders By Allison Stokes, director of public relations and marketing, Law Office of Young Wooldridge, LLP We’ve all heard about the Bakersfield “brain drain” – the idea that most of our promising, local youth leave town for higher education and larger job markets, never returning to contribute their talents to the community where their formative years were spent. For those of us who do return post-graduation, or those who received their degrees here at home, it can be challenging to connect with each other while navigating the early stages of a career. Cue the Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce’s newest program – Bakersfield Young Professionals (BYP). The mission of Bakersfield Young Professionals is to create a network for local, young professionals, ages 21 through 35, and to enhance the development of the community’s future leaders. BYP kicked-off in December with its first meeting at Aera Energy, LLC. During this initial brainstorming session, we identified goals we were hoping to attain from the Chamber’s newest offering. As ideas bounced around the table, four primary components were repeatedly echoed. Before we knew it, the pillars of our new group were established. BYP will focus on professional development, community service, mentoring, and networking. The young professionals present at our first meeting represented a number of industries such as finance, law, energy, non-profit, agriculture and marketing. Though our career paths varied, we all agreed that there are universal business practices which are crucial for success in any industry. To hone certain skill sets necessary for career success, BYP plans to offer a series of educational seminars that will bring our members together for the common purpose of professional development. In this series, you can expect to see topics such as leadership training, business etiquette, and financial management. In addition to providing professional development and education, Bakersfield Young
Professionals believes that it is essential to establish a sense of community service as a core component of our group’s mission. In the next few weeks, we will be identifying opportunities for our members to give back to the community in which they live and work. Our conversation took an interesting turn when it came to the topic of mentoring. While it was immediately obvious that we were seeking guidance from established leaders in our area, we quickly realized that there was potential for our members to serve as mentors to high-school students and undergraduates. Perhaps by educating the next, next generation of leaders about the opportunities available locally, we can open their minds to considering Bakersfield as their permanent residence – a place where personal and professional fulfillment is attainable. Finally, we felt it was important to provide networking and social opportunities for young professionals to connect with each other offthe-clock. BYP events will feature special guests and be held at unique venues that may not be immediately considered for traditional networking events. We are excited to announce our first Bakersfield Young Professionals event – to be held Friday evening, April 25. Former NFL coach and winemaker Dick Vermeil will be on hand to discuss key lessons from his decorated coaching career and showcasing his award-winning wines. Mark your calendars and keep an eye out for more information from the Chamber. Overall, Bakersfield Young Professionals is off to a running start! Bob Meadows, Mission Bank – Chair The Alzheimer’s Disease Association of Kern County (ADAKC) presented at the February Ambassador meeting, and discussed their services and need for a larger facility. ADAKC shared the marketing strategy that has helped in their fundraising efforts. The committee also hosted the Chamber’s first mixer of the year at Randall House. Returning after a one year hiatus, the mixer was a huge success with lots of networking, business connections and sales leads, and of course great food and drink. America will either import our labor or our food That was the message agriculture leaders
from across the country delivered last month in Washington. And their warning was backed up by a new report from the Partnership for a New American Economy and the Agriculture Coalition for Immigration Reform. The report found in recent years, the share of fresh fruits and vegetables consumed by American families that was imported has grown by 79.3 percent. And because of labor shortages, the U.S. missed as much as $3.3 billion in GDP growth in 2012 alone – with farmers losing as METRO 8
much as $1.4 billion in farm income that year. According to the Partnership, farmers can’t afford another year of inaction on immigration – and quite frankly, neither can American consumers. Delays in reform will drive up food costs across the country at a time when many Americans are already struggling to get by. The Partnership for a New American Economy brings together more than 500 Republican, Democratic, and Independent mayors and business leaders who support immigration reform as a way of creating jobs for Americans today.

Cochran has been owner of Health Care Planning and Education for the Elderly and Their Families since 1990, and joined the Chamber in 1991. Her goal is to help families keep their elders living independently as long as possible. Historic Union Cemetery announces its first-ever Forever in Focus photograph contest April 1 to May 31, 2014. There is no entry fee and you can win up to $500. The three categories are historic graves, memorial beauty and creative eye.
