RENEWBIZ Grant Program Spurs Economic Development in East Kern GRC started the New Year with a presentation
from Second District Supervisor Zack Scrivner on RENEWBIZ (Renewable Energy Neighborhood Enhancement Wind Business Investment Zone), a new grant program introduced by the County of Kern to help with economic development in East Kern which includes Mojave, Rosamond and Boron. The goal of the program is to assist qualified organizations with projects designed to redevelop or improve commercial or industrial districts within East Kern County.
The projects seeking funding must demonstrate an ability to benefit the local community by increasing the economic benefit. The grants support projects that demonstrate long term positive impact to the community and encourage business development and sustainability. Privately owned businesses and non-profit organizations are eligible to apply. Projects must take place within unincorporated area of East Kern. In addition, the applicants must provide a cash or in-kind match of at least 10% of the project. Last year, 39 grants were awarded in the communities of Boron, Mojave, Rosamond and Boron currently has a project in progress for 2014.

On January 6, we launched Strictly Business, a one-hour live stream video broadcast that airs Mondays, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., on bakersfield.com and features news, information, tips, tools and resources to help you grow your business and your career. Our numbers have been impressive—with more than 2,700 total viewers tuning in during the first four shows and more than 500 going back to catch either the entire show or portions of it from our YouTube Channel. While the vast majority of our viewers are tuning in from around the Central Valley, Strictly Business has a strong showing in San Francisco, Sacramento and Los Angeles as well. And our metrics show that 80% of our viewers are tuning in from a Windows platform, which tells us they’re listening at work. If you haven’t already, we invite you to check out the show and send us your feedback or story ideas to production@bakersfieldchamber.org. The state of healthcare in Kern County,
hydraulic fracturing, immigration reform… these are issues that impact my organization and virtually every business in Bakersfield. In April of last year, I received an invitation to attend the Chamber’s new program called Good Morning Bakersfield, a breakfast series designed to provide insight for business leaders into important issues in our community. I attended all of the sessions in 2013 and found that the particular design of this series, which typically features a panel discussion, allows for diverse expert voices to explore a subject from all sides. At Goodwill, the board of directors, the staff and I work to carry out our mission to provide jobs and skills development to people with barriers to employment. To do
that effectively, we need to understand the local economic landscape. We need to know where there will be new jobs emerging, as in the energy and healthcare fields. We need to understand the workforce gaps that may exist locally and understand how those gaps may be addressed going forward. To be good stewards in running our social enterprise, I appreciate that the Chamber has provided me a way to increase my knowledge and understanding of the issues facing our community and the opportunities they may present in the growth of Goodwill. The Good Morning Bakersfield program is an excellent new service to the business community. I look forward to future in-depth discussions on topics important to our future and I encourage all of you to put these events on your calendar and attend as well.

Of course, I also have plenty of good memories of riding bikes: the wind on my face, the impossible speed and the way those two wheels expanded the perimeter of my world. But my clearest recollections — the ones that are of photographic quality — are those of that moment right before the crash. My first accident happened when I was 6. My oldest sister’s friend hopped on the back of my banana seat. We went downhill at an unexpected speed that shook my handlebars. The bike moved of its own accord to the gravely shoulder, and I knew we were going down.

But my clearest recollections — the ones that are of photographic quality — are those of that moment right before the crash. My first accident happened when I was 6. My oldest sister’s friend hopped on the back of my banana seat. We went downhill at an unexpected speed that shook my handlebars. The bike moved of its own accord to the gravely shoulder, and I knew we were going down. After that incident, which required stitches, there was yet another hill and more gravel (that time, my back bore the brunt of the injury). Each following accident had its own special flavor — sometimes a flip over the handlebars and other times a sideways skid with the bike landing on top of me like a brutish metallic butterfly. But they were all the same in one quality, the moment of clarity before the moment of pain: Well, here I go again, right into the road. Upon graduating high school, I didn’t have enough money for a car, so my dad found a
10-speed at a garage sale, gave it a tune-up, and wrapped the handlebars with tape that looked like it should have been cordoning off a crime scene. Presto, instant transportation! On that particular bike, I crashed into a trash can in front of a truck full of boys (humiliating!), got a traffic ticket (didn’t even know that was possible), and ended up with
yet another set of stitches on my face (third time’s the charm). Then, glory be, I got a car. I was now one of the four-wheeled dictators of the road. Did it matter that my vehicle was primer bronze? That the sound system was a boom box in the front seat? That the windshield wipers one day broke in the on position, and I drove through

Governmental Review Council
Leslie Golich, Kaiser Permanente - Chair At GRC’s regular meeting the committee members and the group reviewed a draft version of the 2014 Legislative Guide and Public Policy Platform. The Platform will reflect and include 2013 GRC recommendations approved by the board of directors. The Platform was approved after some suggested amendments. The 2014 Legislative Guide will be printed in time for the legislative trip to Sacramento scheduled for May 19 - 21, 2014. Staff contact: Leticia Flores

Kathy Miller, Aera Energy LLC - Chair In January, the class explored Kern County energy industry, gaining a better understanding of Kern County’s role in energy production and about the different types of energy produced in Kern County. The day included tours of the Kern County Museum’s “Black Gold: The Oil Experience” exhibit and a
behind the scenes look at Chevron’s Kern River field. This class day was made possible by the generous sponsorships of Aera Energy LLC, Chevron and Occidental of Elk Hills. Chamber Names Heather Pennella as New Project Manager The Greater Bakersfield Chamber of
Commerce has named Heather Pennella as the new project manager. She replaces Pauline Bartlett, long-time project manager. In her new role, Pennella will be the staff lead for the Energy, Ambassador and Business Development committees, and Chamber Palooza, the annual fundraiser. She will be working to rebuild each committee by growing participation, revamping its role and developing goals and objectives, to ensure continued relevance to Chamber members. Pennella has been a volunteer at the Chamber for a number of years, serving on the Ambassador Committee, which she chaired last year. In her role with that Committee, she regularly attended ribbon cuttings and coordinated and worked several events on behalf of the Chamber, including last year’s Chamber Palooza. “I have enjoyed my involvement as a Chamber volunteer and I am excited to join the Chamber staff in a more official capacity,” said
Pennella. “As project manager, I will have an opportunity to continue to serve the needs of local business. I look forward to working with Chamber staff, members and the community to revitalize an already strong and relevant Chamber of Commerce.” Active in the community, Pennella has served as a committee member and organizer for several large and popular events including CASA’s Wine, Women and Shoes, CBCC’s Golf and Gala, and Red Cross Real Heroes. She joins the Chamber from member business Buck Owens Productions, where she was an account executive—developing and maintaining relationships and advertising sales for KUZZ, KCWR and KRJK radio stations. Pennella’s diverse background includes education and training and management of a large southern California orthopedic sports medicine practice. She holds a bachelor’s degree in history from California State University, Northridge.
