Commerce Political Action Committee (BCCPAC) is now in full swing with its candidate endorsement process for the 2014 elections. BCCPAC has endorsed the candidacy for re-election for Jean Fuller Shannon Grove the following state and elected 16th Senate 34th Assembly officials. State Senator Jean Fuller, 16th SD (new number due to realignment); State Assembly Shannon Grove, 34th Assembly District; Kern County Board of Supervisors Zack Scrivner, 2nd District and Mike Maggard, 3rd District; District Attorney Lisa Green and Kern County Mike Maggard District Attorney Lisa Green Superintendent of Schools Christine 3rd District Lizardi Frazier. great strength in any community is the group of leaders who can be counted on to bring people together to make changes. If you ask around, many people can tell you who those leaders are. But what happens when the time comes to pass the torch on to the next generation of community leaders? How do you identify them and how have they been prepared to take on that role? The Chamber of Commerce is helping both to identify and prepare the next generation of leaders through a couple of its signature programs—Leadership Bakersfield and Youth Leadership Bakersfield—and its newest program—Bakersfield Young Professionals (BYP), which held its kickoff event last week. BYP brings together like-minded young men and women between the ages of 21-35 for social networking, professional development, mentoring opportunities and community involvement. Some will be new to the community, brought here by jobs. Others will have battled the brain drain, having grown up here, gone away to college and then come back to begin their careers and make a positive impact on the place they call home. They are smart, energetic, interested in bettering themselves and concerned about making the community a better place while they’re at it. And make no mistake—they will make a difference. I’m guessing that if you look around your organization, you will find there are a number of YPs making significant contributions to the success of your company. Take a moment and invest in their future, and your own. Encourage them to get involved with BYP. It’s an investment that will provide a return to your company, the community and you for years to come!

“My Take” on Leadership Bakersfield Shaping our community and changing lives By Kathy Miller, communications coordinator, AERA Energy LLC An accountant, a health care executive and a lawyer board a GET bus. No, this isn’t the opening of a bad joke. This happens regularly. Joining them on the bus is a police officer, a doctor, a marketing professional, an oil company employee and a small business owner. Together they travel throughout town exploring local programs, delving into community needs and honing their leadership skills. Just who is this diverse group? They are members of the Leadership Bakersfield class of 2014. For more than 25 years similar groups have gathered as part of Leadership Bakersfield, a Chamber program that identifies and motivates existing and emerging community leaders. The carefully selected class members spend one Friday each month learning about issues facing the different sectors of our community. They explore agriculture; arts and culture; communications and media; criminal justice; education; health and human services; leadership; energy; and government. Each topic is presented by prominent individuals from the public and private sectors and involves in-depth conversations about current issues, site visits
and hands-on experiences. Whether a class member is a Bakersfield native or new to the community, each day cultivates many “wow, I had no idea” learnings. This knowledge translates into action when class members divide into teams to evaluate and implement a community-benefit project. These projects have left an indelible mark on our community. There have been landmark projects, such as the attainment of the All-America City designation; creation of the Cancer Survivors Plaza at Beach Park; affiliation with Keep America Beautiful to Keep Bakersfield Beautiful; and the creation of a program to identify future leaders earlier – Youth Leadership Bakersfield. Other projects have created web sites, developed marketing plans, conducted community studies and surveys, renovated buildings and landscaping, and offered educational programs about graffiti, recycling, health and even annexation. Leadership Bakersfield projects are as varied as the community members involved. When you meet one of the nearly 800 Leadership Bakersfield graduates, they won’t hesitate to share their experiences of the
10-month program. In fact, you may have a hard time getting them to stop talking! There is no doubt in my mind that the legacy of Leadership Bakersfield runs deep and touches every corner of our community. This is a program that not only changes and shapes the community, but also the lives of those involved. Casey Knaak, United Way of Kern County - Chair The committee has received and reviewed all of the nominations that were submitted for this year’s Beautiful Bakersfield Awards and has notified and congratulated the nominees. Judging takes place on May 5 and 6. Award recipients will be announced at the Beautiful Bakersfield Awards Ceremony on Saturday, May 31 at the DoubleTree by Hilton. Governmental Review Council
Leslie Golich, Kaiser Permanente - Chair Scott Tobias, Real Estate Anti-Fraud Advisory Council (REAAC) spoke to GRC. REAAC is a collaboration between the Kern County District Attorney’s Real Estate Fraud Unit and local lenders, escrow companies and real estate professionals. Tobias shared that outreaching to agents, lenders, escrow companies, and title companies is essential as these professionals directly participate in most real estate transactions and are the front line of defense in detecting fraud. Fraudulent real estate schemes include foreclosure rescue scams, loan modification scams, short sale flipping scams, rental scams, loan fraud, predatory lending and scatters. REAAC’s goal is to educate the public and provide resources to detect warning signs of real estate fraud so people don’t become victims. Staff contact: Leticia Flores

focused its attention on Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement in Kern County. The class experienced the rare opportunity to hear from an esteemed panel which included superior court judge, John W. Lua; Kern County District Attorney Lisa Green; Assistant Chief of Police Lyle Martin; and criminal defense attorney, David Torres. The day also included a behind-the-scenes look at programs in place at the Police Activities League; Kern County Probation Department and hands-on interactive training at the Bakersfield Police Department’s training facility. Special thanks are extended to Advisory Chair Lieutenant Jason Townsend and Day Chair Sergeant Jeffrey Burdick with the Bakersfield Police Department for their time and expertise in planning the session. Youth Leadership Bakersfield Advisory Council
Michele Newell, Aera Energy LLC - Chair The April session of Youth Leadership Bakersfield focused its attention on energy. Students had the opportunity to participate in an Electric and Gas Safety Demonstration and Construction and Climbing Demonstration at Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s Service Center; gained a better understanding of Kern County’s role in California energy production and the role utilities play; heard from a panel of experts about careers in the energy industry and the opportunities a college degree in the industry can provide; learned about Oil 101 and the impact that oil has to Kern County and toured Kern County Museum’s Black Gold: The Oil Experience Tour. Special thanks to Advisory Council Chairs Rob Duchow, Southern California Gas Company; Denise Newton, Pacific Gas and Electric Company and Gloria Williams, Occidental of Elk Hills. insight into the process and shared tips for being appointed to a state or local board or commission. She also told the group how to access the application, where to find vacancies, how to navigate the process and who can help. The training was a step-by-step for those interested is doing more for their local

not feel comfortable in – you might really like it! Know who your colleagues on the board or commission will be – you will see these people often! Ask yourself if you are comfortable in the public eye. Being appointed is about transparency. Make sure you have the time to commit to being on the board or commission. Know the power of being a “public member.” Boards and commissions need women who have a good head on their shoulders – you don’t have to be an expert! Be professional with the appointments staff. Remember there are politics involved with appointments. If your appointment gets caught up in a political “web” realize it has nothing to do with you.

SB 1017 Severance Tax The Greater Bakersfield Chamber is hard at
work for its members. The Chamber has signed on to oppose Senate Bill 1017 (Evans) which would raise taxes on oil and natural gas by $2 billion or more annually. The state is finally beginning to rebound from the recession and another oil tax may lead to a set-back to hard working families. It may result in loss of billions of dollars in economic activity and destroy thousand of California jobs.
California already collects high taxes from oil, including taxing oil reserves in the ground which pay for local government series like schools, policy and fire protection. Oil producers also pay some of the steepest sales tax, personal income tax and corporate tax rates in the nation. In accordance to the Chamber’s Policy Platform we oppose increase in fines, penalties and fees for business and development. In addition, costly mandates which target one product type and use over another.

The Greater Bakersfield Chamber of Commerce Ribbon Cutting Ceremony A ribbon cutting is the ceremonial opening of a new or newly-renovated, relocated or expanded business. It can inaugurate a business’ first day of operation or it can take place weeks after a soft opening. Because the ribbon cutting marks a very significant moment in the business’ history, this is also a great photo opportunity. Meet Tonya Sterling Helping the Chamber take the next steps forward Since, 2002 Tonya Sterling has energetically
been behind-the-scenes at Chamber programs and events. Sterling currently serves as the operations director of the Chamber and supports staff with all events, programs and is the primary representative for the board of directors. As staff lead for Leadership Bakersfield, she has led and developed hundreds of local leaders. She also serves as the lead for Annual Dinner and Board Installation, State of the City Forum and corporate trainings. “The best thing about working at the Chamber is the joy of working with a great team,” Sterling said. “Not only is the Chamber staff the best team in town, but we have great member businesses that I have the opportunity to work with on a daily basis.” Although Sterling claims otherwise, she is not shy to represent the Chamber and be at the forefront of events. staff in the right direction and helping them succeed in planning and developing Chamber events and programs. “Without Tonya’s guidance, expertise and positive outlook, events and programs wouldn’t be the same,” said Jean Scheiber, operations assistant. During her 11 years at the Chamber, Sterling has been supported by her husband Travis and her two sons Bryce and Blake. If there is one thing you should know about Sterling, it is that she has strong pride in Bakersfield, but refers to her southern roots to keep her grounded and remind her of true family values.
Chamber Palooza, the Chamber’s only fundraiser of the year is seeking auction items. The auction is a great way for businesses to get publicity for their products and services and show community support. Palooza is seeking volunteers in all areas: check-in, bartenders, runners and much more! Palooza is set for Friday, June 13, 6:00 to 10:00 p.m., at the Kern County Museum.
