hat can the Chamber do for you? First, we want to say THANK YOU! Through the support of our members, we are able to foster a sustainable business community, stimulate growth and create positive change. Although 2020 has been a hectic year and we have had to revamp some of our programs and events, it is our goal to continue to make Bakersfield and Kern County a region for economic prosperity by collaborating with businesses, organizations and government. As a result, we are busy at the Greater Bakersfield Chamber. • We have launched the BYP (Bakersfield Young Professionals) Virtual Summit Series covering topics such as: Enneagram Types, Leading During a Crisis and Achieving Financial Success, among others. • Labor Law webinars educate and inform our members. These quarterly virtual events are hosted by experts and cover-up-to date information on topics that are pertinent and useful to the current business climate. • Valuable finance tips from the Moneywise Wealth Management are available weekly for you to view and can be accessed through our Trending weekly email. • Members can participate in our Industry Specific Round Tables. These meetings are by invite and discuss topics germane to each industry. • Advocacy is one of the biggest ways we are constantly working for you. We endeavor to create a business-friendly environment in Bakersfield and Kern County through advocating at the local, state and federal levels on policy that affects your bottom line. • Coffee with the Chamber will resume virtually this month and is for members only. This month we will be discussing how businesses have adapted to Covid-19; their successes and failures. • State of the City will air Sept. 5 at 8 p.m. on KGET-TV 17. Tune in to hear from our featured speakers, Bakersfield Mayor Karen Goh and City Manager Christian Clegg. They will share highlights from the past year as well as outline
priorities for the coming year. • Our 30th Virtual Annual Beautiful Bakersfield Awards has been scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 24 and will be televised on KGET-TV 17. • Ambassador Meetings are a great way to connect with other businesses and to highlight your company. These meetings are virtual and are generally held the fourth Tuesday of each month. • Our virtual GRC (Government Review Council) Meetings are perfect for our politically active and interested members, who want the opportunity to hear about policy and politics that affect your business. • Throwback Thursdays are an opportunity to celebrate your company anniversary or Chamber anniversary on the Chamber Instagram platform. • Ribbon Cuttings are a great way for new businesses to be showcased virtually. We love to celebrate this achievement with our members. • Our political action committee (BAKPAC) works to elect business-friendly candidates to office and support issues important to the local business community. We endorse candidates, provide direct contributions to candidates and causes and engage in independent efforts to contact voters. • Marketing: We also offer options to showcase your business through our social media platforms, Member to Member e-blasts, Metro publication ads, sponsorship opportunities, as well as FREE space in our Member News. eing a local Bakersfield girl and the owner of a ladies boutique during a pandemic, has definitely had its challenges! When Gov. Newsom announced the shut down in mid-March, my store was at full capacity with beautiful clothes and gorgeous Brighton accessories. We had just mailed out our invitations Victoria Diffee to celebrate our big 25-year anniversary since I opened Victoria’s in The Marketplace. Never in a million years could any of us have imagined such a threat to our livelihood and well-being. The effect of having to close our doors at the beginning of our busiest spring season with Easter and Mother’s Day has been financially devastating! On a positive note, when times get tough, it can sometimes force one to look within and get creative! I chose to try to be positive and not give in. We’ve always talked about having our own website and now seemed to be the perfect time. Lucky for me, I have a sharp, young employee, who was eager to jump right in! We also ventured into social
media and did Facebook lives, which allowed us to be able to show some of our customers what merchandise was available. This has been a fun way to communicate with our customers. For the two months we were shut down, this helped us have some cash flow. We also offered curbside pick-up and now we’re selling on our new website: www.shopatvictorias.com. I’m so grateful to be open now and am grateful to my loyal customers for their support! We are taking special precautions to ensure everyone's safety. We have sanitizing stations and our staff, along with our customers, wear masks. We also offer a great selection of masks for sale. At Victoria’s, we’re not at all like the big box stores! Our atmosphere is quiet and feels safe – we sanitize the dressing rooms and the clothes! Every day my employees and I take each other’s temperature. Health and safety is our No. 1 priority. We are now getting in our pretty new fall clothing! We also just started our Semi-Annual Sale with lots of clothes to choose from up to 70 perfect off and some Brighton is also on sale! o you miss brewery tastings and tours as much as we do? Lucky for you, BYP is collaborating with the team at Temblor Brewing Co. to bring you a virtual tasting with four tasty brews at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17. Join Owner Don Bynum, Head Brewer Justin Hill and Operations Manager Francesca Colombo as they share Temblor's history and take us through each tasting. We will start with Temblorfest, Temblor's German style Marzen (malty lager). This is the beer German breweries brew for Oktoberfest! Second will be the brewery'sflagship West Coast IPA, Streets of Bakersfield. Blackberry Creamsickle will be the third beer. This newer brand and beer style is loaded with blackberry puree and vanilla. Lastly, we will taste Mango Hazy IPA, which is a North East Style IPA with lower bitterness and some mango extract. The Temblor team will physically taste, give notes along with ingredient descriptions and take questions. To wrap-up the tasting, they will give a quick tour through the facility.

SHINE is a FREE innovative, curriculum-based afterschool program that utilizes dance to teach math for middle school girls.
