Host? Who needs a host?

Evidently, those staging this year’s Oscars feel they’ll be perfectly OK without one ... again. After last year’s controversy that ultimately took wouldhave-been-host Kevin Hart out of the picture, the show went on anyway, with many critics and viewers declaring that it was just fine. For the second consecutive time, then, no one person will be steering the event as ABC airs the 92nd edition of the movie industry’s biggest night Sunday, Feb. 9, from Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre.

ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke foresees this year’s Oscars delivering what she believes last year’s offered, “huge entertainment value, big musical numbers, big comedy and star power. Our goal is to present the most entertaining show possible, and the producers have already put together a plan for what is proving to be a really entertaining telecast.” Those producers are filmmakers Lynette Howell Taylor (the most recent version of “A Star is Born”) and Stephanie Allain (“Hustle & Flow”).

This year’s Oscar show comes at least a couple of weeks earlier than usual, substantially reducing the time available for nominees’ campaigns. It also caused a reconfiguration of the entire film-award season, since the last stop traditionally is the Academy Awards. Thus, the Golden Globe Awards, the Critics’ Choice Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards, England’s BAFTA Film Awards and the Film Independent Spirit Awards (among other such events) have been virtually on top of one another in recent weeks.

With the controversial “Joker” leading the pack with 11 nominations – and

then “The Irishman,” “1917” and “Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood” with 10 each – following are the nominees in several categories in the 92nd Oscars.

Survivor’ brings back 20 winners for 20th-anniversary competition With the show starting its 20thanniversary year, it stands to reason “Survivor” would want to mark the occasion in a special way.

To that end, 20 past winners of the award-winning CBS competition – which did much to make the reality-show genre a programming staple – are brought back to compete in the 40th season, aptly subtitled “Winners at War” and starting Wednesday, Feb. 12. Underscored by a “Survivor” retrospective special shown a week earlier, host Jeff Probst (also an executive producer of the series) is so familiar with the encoring participants who vie to “outwit, outplay and outlast” each other to claim the $2 million grand prize, he probably had most of his homework done for the new round simply by outlasting the earlier seasons himself.

It must be noted some of the returnees date back to almost the beginning of “Survivor,” and even though their earlier stints ended in victory, each one’s own game may have changed considerably over the better part of two decades. Also, those who have returned for special “All-Stars” or “Fans vs. Favorites” editions already have found that “Survivor” itself has progressed from its early days, adopting such aspects as rule changes and ever more complex challenges in strategy and physicality.

Television has played an increased role in Lowe’s career, since he followed “The West Wing” with the series “The Lyon’s Den,” “Dr. Vegas,” “Brothers & Sisters,” “Wild Bill,” “The Grinder” and “Mental Samurai.” He also appeared with his sons on the reality show “The Lowe Files,” and he directed, executive-produced and starred in a home-screen remake of the thriller “The Bad Seed.” “Drew Peterson: Uncontrollable” and “Prosecuting Casey Anthony” have been among his other TV movies of recent years.

Lowe occasionally performs a one-man stage show based on his autobiography “Stories I Only Tell My Friends,” and he co-founded the Homeowner’s Defense Fund, involving land-use planning in California’s Santa Barbara County.

Currently, Lowe is starring in “9-1-1: Lone Star,” the new Fox spinoff in which he plays a fire chief who has relocated from New York to Austin, Texas, with his fellow-firefighter son. Also an executive producer of the series, Lowe and his wife have two children.

Robert Hepler Lowe was born on March 17, 1964, in Charlottesville, Va., to a teacher and a lawyer (who later welcomed his brother, actor-director Chad Lowe).

Raised in Dayton, Ohio, the siblings moved to Malibu, Calif., with their mother after her divorce.

After high school, where his classmates included Charlie Sheen, Lowe began to accrue acting roles in the TV movie “Thursday’s Child” and such mid-1980s feature films as “The Outsiders,” “Class,” “The Hotel New Hampshire,” “Oxford Blues,” “St. Elmo’s Fire,” “Youngblood,” “About Last Night ... ” and “Masquerade” (the latter written by later “Law & Order” franchise mentor Dick Wolf). Lowe earned a Golden Globe Award nomination for the movie “Square Dance,” and he also took to the stage in a Williamstown Theatre Festival production of “The Three Sisters.”

Though he appeared in such films as “Wayne’s World,” “Tommy Boy” and the “Austin Powers” comedies through the 1990s, the politically active Lowe got a major career boost from his television work on “The West Wing,” on which he spent four seasons as Deputy White House Communications Director Sam Seaborn.

funneled into our storytelling. I don’t feel like an authority on politics at large in general.

I mean, it was it was relevant insofar as it informed my work on this show.

(Laughs) Yes, exactly. I think that kind of storytelling is exciting and it excites me as just an audience member. You know, the idea of a second chance is compelling to me and the idea of the mystery of where they went is very compelling to me.

That’s one of the things I will miss the most, getting to have that direct interchange with actual policymakers and intelligence officers and people who are really building the world around us, rather than merely reflecting on it.

Having done several Comic Cons with “Manifest” and “Once,” do you have a technique for deflecting fans’ requests for spoilers?

Does going through the thought processes of your character Ben on “Manifest” wear on you as an actor?

So you came from one high-concept series in “Once Upon a Time” to another, albeit with a completely different tone.

I try to give away what I can give away. I try to give enough teasers as I possibly can. I mean, there are some things that I absolutely just don’t know but I think you just try to give them something to chew on. And that’s the great thing fans at Comic Cons and that type of genre fan, is that they’re so engaged, they’re so passionate and they’re so smart about story that it’s the best kind of fans to have because it just makes it all really worth it because they’re so involved.

Yes, it’s taxing. It’s kind of pummeling, but I’m so intimate with this person (the fictional Carrie Mathison). And I’ve been carrying her with me for almost a decade, and I’ve been in this incredible company that is just so exquisitely talented. And I just know how rare that combination is, to be working with people who I trust and respect and admire so much, and to be working with material that is always going to challenge me and make me question something urgent and worthwhile.

So, I feel very conflicted.

And a lot of them are scientists and engineers with advanced degrees.

Yes, and (they) really watch the shows and become so invested in them. I haven’t investigated so much with “Manifest,” but seven years in “Once Upon a Time” there was a lot of fan fiction that would start and some really brilliant things would come out of it and brilliant ideas. So they’re the best fans to have, if you can have any fan at all (laughs).

As the eighth and final season of “Homeland” begins, have you found yourself much more informed about world events during the show’s run than you might have been otherwise?

I think so. I think all that knowledge that we had that incredible access to really was

I also think that the nature of this show actually is such that we could go on. This could continue. I think of it like origami; it just gets reconfigured every season. And I think it is providing a service that isn’t being provided very readily. I do think it stimulates conversation, and I think it is unique, so I think there will be an absence. I will miss it, personally.

For me as an actor with the training, I can (drop the character) at the end of the day. But every episode, and as it should be, is high stakes, high excitement and high story, so we’re always operating on a level (laughs) when we’re doing an episode of “Manifest.”

So hiatus is very welcome right at this moment in time but give me about two more weeks of it and then I’m going to want to get back to it (laughs).

Bakers flex their creative muscles on ‘Girl Scout Cookie Championship’ As a child, Alyson Hannigan did not have a happy experience selling Girl Scout Cookies. But that never dimmed her love of the iconic confections nor discourage her from hosting Food Network’s recently premiered competition series “Girl Scout Cooking Championship.”

“I did not represent them very well ...,” the “How I Met Your Mother” actress admits of her salesmanship, which was hampered when she lost the list of customers who bought cookies from her.

“So when the Girl Scout cookies arrived, we couldn’t find the list and then I had to go to every neighbor and say, ‘I’m so sorry. I lost the list. Could you tell me what cookies you ordered?’ ... (My mother) found the list, many years later, but that was pretty traumatic for me, and so that was the end of my Girl Scout Cookies.”

Airing Mondays, the series challenges five accomplished bakers to transform the cookies into edible works of art, to be evaluated by Hannigan, judges Nacho Aguirre, Katie Lee and a rotating third panelist, as well as other tasters. The winner gets an outdoor adventure and a year’s supply of Girl Scout Cookies.

Each episode also takes viewers behind the scenes for an up-close look at how the popular treats are made.

The creations prepared on the show exemplify outside-the-box thinking, ranging from a giant double-barrel marshmallow cake made with Girl Scout S’mores and a 10-layer Do-si-do/peanut butter red velvet globe cake to a Thin Mints-incorporated blueberry mint glacier cake.

For his part, Aguirre was impressed.

“If you see the flavors they incorporated, the flavors in the creations and they made amazing stuff with it,” the San Antonio-based pastry chef and chocolatier says. “I mean, you should never imagine that mixing coconut, caramel into a cake and then adding the actual Girl Scout Cookie turned out to be as delicious as it was. We were very amazed with the creativity of those bakers.”

“It was so creative and so inspiring,” Hannigan adds, “and I also think that the Girl Scout Cookie is just the perfect cookie anyway. So, I’m like, how can you make it better? And then, I mean the things that they came up with. And then the decorator in me was just thrilled because they are so creative and just – my mouth was just open and drooling most of the time.”

Serving Bakersfield since 1967, it’s safe to say they know what they’re doing. Hungry Hunter’s prime rib is coated in its own blend of seasonings then roasted to the peak of tenderness in specially made ovens, resulting in a steak that melts in your mouth. It’s also served with ruby port au jus, horseradish sauce and sides of your choice.

Not only can you dine in at Sorella Ristorante Italiano (7900 McNair Lane) for pasta, but you can find steak there, too. Sorella’s 18-ounce rib-eye steak can be served with sides like veggies and a baked potato.

The rib-eye was coated with pepper and its own juices. They also provide a dinner special, which customers can choose between shrimp scampi or scallops alongside your choice of steak. For a place that specializes in Italian food, Sorella serves one of the best steaks in town.

Luigi’s (725 E. 19th St.) is an iconic, must-visit restaurant for both residents and out-of-town guests, with a menu boasting classic Italian dishes served in a family atmosphere. Each day features several specials, with Tuesdays featuring mouthwatering prime rib. Perfectly seasoned and slow roasted, it’s unbelievably juicy and tender. Available as an entree or sandwich, it’s also paired with Luigi’s signature white and/or red pasta. Make sure to come hungry because it’s a lot of food!
