It’s November 1940 and aviation hero Charles Lindbergh has just defeated Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the presidential election. What lay ahead for the people of the United States are deep divisions and rampant anti-semitism as the xenophobic populist turns the country toward fascism.

That’s the alternate history premise of “The Plot Against America,” a six-part miniseries premiering Monday, March 16, on HBO. Written and executive produced by David Simon (“The Wire”) and Ed Burns (“The Brothers McMullen”), the series views the storyline through the eyes of a working-class Jewish family in Newark, N.J. Herman Levin (Morgan Spector, “Homeland”) is a family man and insurance agent with ambition and many opinions and he isn’t enthralled with the new chief executive. Neither is his homemaker wife Bess (Zoe Kazan, “Ruby Sparks”), especially when they both notice anti-Jewish sentiment roiling in their community during a house-hunting excursion with their sons Philip and Sandy (Azhy Robertson, Caleb Malis).

Bess’s sister Evelyn (Winona Ryder, “Stranger Things”) also isn’t particularly crazy about the new president but she is very fond of one of his key supporters, Rabbi Lionel Bengelsdorf (John Turturro, “The Night Of ”), so in the interest of perhaps snagging a husband, the middle-aged woman starts attending pro-Lindbergh rallies, unbeknownst to her family.

The story is based on the 2004 Philip Roth novel of the same name, which Simon feels has particular resonance today.

“I think it’s fairly apparent that the political paradigm that’s now – not only in America, but internationally you’re seeing it, in terms of populism and nationalism and the rise of xenophobia and fear of the other, that’s the reason this got made,” Simon explains. “...

Somebody came to me with the book about five years ago ... and said, ‘I think this would make a great miniseries.’ And I said to him, ‘I enjoyed the novel. It’s a nice little artifact. It was fascinating in its moment, but ... that doesn’t seem to be our political moment.’

“So, you know, how wrong was I?” he continues. “The reason to do this is that ... because of the forces that are now in play politically, the piece is incredibly relevant.”

Comparisons have been made to the Amazon series “The Man in the High Castle,” which imagines life in an America had Axis powers won World War II, but Kazan insists this is a completely different beast.

“It isn’t about the Nazis conquering America,” she argues. “It’s about American ideology being turned into a nationalistic, edging on fascistic ideology. It’s about how our thinking can be turned so easily and it’s really about in some ways the history of our country, those ideologies coming to the fore and that it could happen again.”

“It will,” Simon agrees. “There will always be a moment at which there is some political advantage to saying, ‘Somebody is less American.’ And you should be worried about that.”

And some were even reported by public officials, such as one case of a U.S. president’s encounter with a mythical beast in the early 1900s.

“We have a Bigfoot segment, for instance,” Englund says. “But it’s something that was reported and talked about not only in newspapers but by the president of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, on his great safari-like hunting expeditions up in Montana – and this is before any of the other Bigfoot or Abominable Snowman reportings.

“So it’s interesting that this one is a newspaper article and the guides that were with him and actually the president of the United States, Teddy Roosevelt himself, talking about it. There’s this sense of credibility.”

Robert Englund may be best-known for playing a serial killer, but in his latest role, he sees himself more in the mold of a Vincent Price.

Premiering Wednesday, March 18, on Travel Channel, “True Terror With Robert Englund” puts the portrayer of razorfinger-tipped Freddy Krueger from the “Nightmare on Elm Street” slasher-movie franchise in the role of host and guide for a journey through real-life tales of horror from yesteryear, as told by newspaper accounts and commentary from experts and historians.

Using ominous tones and a creepy persona, Englund walks viewers through re-enactments of such tales as a boy buried alive during a smallpox outbreak in late1800s New Orleans, a 20th century Atlanta police station besieged by a vengeful spirit, and a 19th-century North Carolina storekeeper whose premonitions of his own death become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The common thread here, outside of the element of creepiness, is that they all were reported in mainstream media of the day – aka newspapers – which Englund argues “gives it a strange, different kind of historical American cred, at least from my point of view, than just like a rumor or a myth or a legend or a campfire story.”

Jason Matthew Biggs was born on May 12, 1978, in Pompton Plains, N.J. He began his acting career at a very young age – five years old, specifically – appearing in the comedy series “Drexell’s Class” and later having a regular role on the serial “As the World Turns,” for which he earned a Daytime Emmy nomination.

He also worked on Broadway in his youth in “Conversations With My Father.”

A tennis player in high school, Biggs went to New York University, then attended Montclair State University. He dropped out to take up acting again, and soon had one of his biggest successes to date with the raunchy movie comedy “American Pie,” later appearing in three of the sequels to it.

Biggs alternated between film and stage work during the 2000s. He worked in such movies as “Boys and Girls,” “Loser,” “Saving Silverman,” “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” and “Anything Else,” but he also starred on Broadway as Benjamin in “The Graduate.” His other plays during that period included “Modern Orthodox” and “Boys’ Life.”

In more recent years, Biggs has acted on television in “The Good Wife, ”Orange Is the New Black“ and ”The Good Fight“; in the movies ”Amateur Night,“ ”Who We Are Now,“ ”Dear Dictator“ and (as himself) ”Jay and Silent Bob Reboot“; and on stage in ”The Heidi Chronicles.“ Currently, Biggs is starring in the Fox sitcom ”Outmatched,“ in which he and Maggie Lawson play Atlantic City-based parents of four children – three of whom are geniuses. He also has been a guest judge on Fox’s ”The Masked Singer.“ A published writer, Biggs has had his work featured in the anthologies “What’s Your Exit? A Literary Tour Through New Jersey” and “Oy! Only Six? Why Not More Six-Word Memoirs on Jewish Life” (the latter despite the fact that Biggs isn’t Jewish). However, his writing also has generated controversy on occasion, as with certain jokes he has made on his Twitter account.

Since 2008, Biggs has been married to Jenny Mollen, with whom he costarred in the movie “My Best Friend’s Girl.” They have two sons.

What do you think the difference is between “Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” and other series that have blended music with drama?

“Brockmire” was planned as a four-season show, correct?

It was. It was meant to be a four-season arc, and (series creator/ writer) Joel Church-Cooper had a vision of where this narrative would be. He felt like it would take whatever it is, 32 episodes, to do that and that’s what we did. And it did feel really satisfying to end it the way we did, like we told the full story. A show like this doesn’t necessarily need a narrative like that, but I was glad we did it that way.

That Zoey can read not only people’s minds but their hearts through music is what makes our show different. The songs come out of character, not necessarily out of plot.

What do you make of Zoey’s special gift?

Are you going to miss doing Jim Brockmire’s voice?

Oh, I’ll still do it, believe me. Oh yeah. I’ve been doing it since I was 15 years old. I’m not going to stop now. I bet we find some other life for it, whether it’s a podcast or some other version of a weird show. I always do like appearances on sports talk.

I think that having the ability to read people’s minds ultimately can make you feel very alone. In the midst of all of this, Zoey’s in the process of losing her father (played by Peter Gallagher), who has a degenerative disease – and I think through her struggle and her ultimate success, the audience goes on a journey with her and will very much love her.

You could show up in the booth at a New York Mets game, your favorite team.

Are you a music lover anyway?

How serious are you with continuing the character?

I do all the time. I go into the booth once a year for ESPN as Brockmire. ... I’ve been in with, like, Eduardo Perez and Tim Kurkjian for a couple of innings each year. But you know, I’ll still mess around.

More like for fun, but I’m open with the idea of finding another life for it, if we can figure it out. I always wanted to do a foul-mouthed four-camera show, like a live audience. Like Brockmire would be hilarious – imagine this sensibility with this kind of foul language and content but for a live audience, like a sitcom atmosphere. That might be fun to try someday.

We also have Mandy Moore, who’s an incredible choreographer. And another character in the show is the music from all these brilliant artists across decades and time .... and all of this makes for an expansive storytelling universe. It’s really fun to find out which songs are coming next. We’ll be on the set and Austin will say, “Hey, we just secured such-and-such,” and it’s always a big celebration when we get a song that we think would be too hard to get.

It’s hard to listen to sports announcers without hearing Brockmire’s voice. Why do all these guys talk that way?

(In Brockmire’s voice) I don’t know. That’s what got me into this in the first place. Like, why do these guys speak like this? And do they always talk like this?

We went to him for a lot of questions that we had, and he was super-knowledgeable and he gave us a lot leeway in building our characters. ... To take history and modern issues and stigmas and make such a well-articulated love child is, really, it’s an enigma.

Bravo’s ‘Top Chef’ heads to La-La Land for Season 17 Season 17 finds Bravo’s “Top Chef ” In Los Angeles for a battle of returning contestants who couldn’t quite bag the grand prize in previous competitions.

Premiering Thursday, March 19, the round of episodes titled “All Stars LA” brings back 10 finalists and five frontrunners from past seasons to vie in iconic locations across the Los Angeles area – from the Griffith Observatory and the Getty Center to the Los Angeles Coliseum and the Walt Disney Concert Hall – in pursuit of a series record $250,000 grand prize. Those who make it through the preliminary rounds, as determined by judges Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons, will fly off to Italy for the final. As in seasons past, Padma Lakshmi will be the host.

As usual, there will be pressure as the chefs have to work against the clock to create their dishes. Within that context, they’ll also have to contend with numerous Elimination and Quickfire Challenges, one of which this season is a campfire-inspired test that tasks a chef in a mountain cabin with recreating a famous chef ’s dish while being guided over the phone by a family member – with the twist being that the family member may or may not know what they’re tasting and, hence, describing.

Colicchio laughs as he recalls the challenge.

“I thought it was funny where some of them, like the person who would walk them through it, had no idea they were talking about fish,” he says. “So you’re at a disadvantage when your family member has no idea what they’re eating. But it’s fun, it’s actually a fun challenge. You know, when someone has to describe to you what the dish is and you have to try to recreate it, that’s fun.”

Less fun, for the chefs at least, is working within a limited time frame. Some can do it well, but others don’t manage their time properly, and still others get too ambitious and run over their allotment. Failure occurs and stress and frustration set in.

“Plus, 16 hours a day, they’re on camera,” Colicchio notes, “or they’re cooking for a Quickfire Elimination or they’re being interviewed. And so there’s no downtime, and then when they get home, there’s a lot of interaction.

They’re not sleeping enough, so there’s an exhaustion, especially once they get halfway through.

“You hear it all the time,” continues Colicchio. “These are chefs who are used to spending long hours on their feet, and halfway through they start going, ‘I had no idea it was going to be this hard.’ That’s always the thing, too ... and then mentally, you start breaking down when you’re tired.”
