NBC’s ‘Council of Dads’ pulls together for an ill friend’s family

Some friends promise to be there for you and yours when times get tough.

And then, there’s the “Council of Dads.”

Premiering Tuesday, March 24 (and then resuming on April 30), the NBC drama unites several close friends of a cancer patient (Tom Everett Scott) to support the man’s family. Played by Clive Standen (“Vikings”), J. August Richards (“Angel”) and Michael O’Neill (“The West Wing”), the “council” checks in regularly – while also trying to keep their own lives in check – on those including the matriarch (Sarah Wayne Callies, “The Walking Dead”) who’s expecting another child.

Inspired by Bruce Feiler’s samenamed book, “Council of Dads” is a departure for executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer, traditionally a crimeshow specialist (“CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” “Without a Trace”). “It’s an immediate idea that I think that we’ve all dealt with,” maintains Tony Phelan, also an executive producer of the new series along with his wife and creative partner, Joan Rater. “We have very similar conversations where she will say to me, ‘If I die, these are the approved women that you can have come anywhere near our children.”’

Co-star O’Neill allows that in some ways, “Council of Dads” echoes “This Is Us,” the fourth-season finale of

which it debuts immediately after. “I think there was an appetite there for that drama,” he reflects, “and I think they just pulled the covers back and said, ‘Here you are.’ I love that they were the prow of the ship, and I’m very happy to go into harbor behind them – but that appetite has been there for us as well, I think, so we’ll just try to honor it.”

Callies notes that her father-inlaw succumbed to cancer “between shooting the pilot and the series, which was an interesting kind of thing to navigate. I think we’ve all had the experience of recognizing that your family and your blood ... are not the same thing, by any means. They’re the people who stand up for you, right?

They’re the people who say, ‘I’m going to make you feel safe in the world.

And I’m going to make myself a better person because you deserve that from me.’ That’s family, I think.”

Indeed, Richards says “the message” that “Council of Dads” conveys “really hits me in a place where I live, which is that family is not limited to race, sexual orientation, not even genetics.

Your capacity to love is what makes your family. I was so moved by that, I just was like, ‘If I could be a part of this show that is part of something that I would really love to say to the world, then I would be blessed.’ And I am.”

As do former residents who relate their stories in the documentary, Burns notes that initially, “East Lake Meadows looked wonderful. It looked like a promised land ... but the substandard housing was so shoddy that it went into decay right away, and happened to coincide with the advent of crack and other things that just turned it into a hell. In fact, it was called a little Vietnam because people wouldn’t go in there who didn’t live there, and people who lived there were afraid for their lives. I think this unmasks a lot of the fallacies about our understanding of public housing, but also about the people who have occupied it.�

Ken Burns obviously has a passion for history, his subjects sometimes are of relatively recent vintage.

The iconic documentarian proves that as executive producer of “East Lake Meadows: A Public Housing Story,� which PBS airs Tuesday, March 24 (check local listings).

Produced and directed by Burns’ daughter Sarah and her husband, David McMahon, the film recalls an Atlanta public-housing project that deteriorated over the roughly 25 years of its existence and ultimately was demolished to make way for mixed-income housing.

Ken Burns maintains that regardless of the subject, he always has “focused on tiny little moments, whether it was the early days of radio or Brooklyn Bridge, or biographies of people like Jack Jackson or Horatio Nelson Jackson. We’ve always felt that the most important thing was to meet a top-down explication with a bottom-up sense of how people lived. As we got on the ground and began to learn more about it, we understood that really (with) that bottom-up sense, we could tell an entire story of American public housing. “East Lake Meadows could be (Chicago’s) Cabrini-Green, could be fillin-the-blank,� adds Burns. “We began to realize that the most important way – once Sarah and Dave got on the background and dug deep into the material – was to tell a bottom-up story of the folks who were trying to endure life in all of its

“The Lovely Bones” (directed by Peter Jackson), and the cheerleading series “Hellcats.” She also made the films “Secretariat” and “Super 8” before landing a part that would change the course of her career: Lainey Lewis, who was the girlfriend of eldest son Barry (Troy Gentile) for some time, on ABC’s “The Goldbergs.”

Eventually, “The Goldbergs” gave Michalka her own spinoff series, something she maintains she never envisioned happening. ABC’s “Schooled” has made her character Lainey a music teacher at William Penn Academy, where Lainey was a student herself – and she’s still dealing with some of the same faculty members in her current position there.

Recent years have seen Michalka appear in the movies “Grace Unplugged” and “Support the Girls,” and also on the series “Silicon Valley” and “Motive.” Her drama film “Expecting Amish” turns up frequently on Lifetime and LMN. Additionally, she’s heard as characters on the animated “Steven Universe” and “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.”

Amanda Joy (“AJ”) Michalka was born on April 10, 1991, in Torrance, Calif. She and her sister, Aly, both have been inclined to perform as actresses and musicians – starting in AJ’s case with her prowess on the piano and guitar early on, and also with her acting in church productions.

Homeschooled for a time, Michalka resided briefly in Seattle and Milwaukee after her parents divorced. A model in catalogs in her youth, Michalka had early acting roles on the daytime serials “Passions” and “General Hospital,” and also played the young Dinah Lance in the pilot for the series “Birds of Prey.”

After roles on “Six Feet Under,” “The Guardian” and the short-lived sitcom “Oliver Beene,” Michalka really began to establish herself as a young star with a part in the Disney Channel movie “Cow Belles,” which she followed by appearing with sister Aly in the MTV projects “Super Sweet 16: The Movie” and “Aly & AJ: Sister Act.” By then, they were establishing themselves musically, though they decided to revert from the name “78violet” to “Aly & AJ.” Michalka followed her own acting path with her first movie, the acclaimed

OF ‘FBI: MOST WANTED’ ON CBS The latest of executive producer Dick Wolf’s drama series, “FBI: Most Wanted” has performed strongly since its January debut. Did you expect the show to be so successful?

You’ve been wearing the prosthetic scars that Jamie has on his back since Season 1. Is it heavy and how long does it take to put on?

I don’t think there is any guarantee of success in this world, but Dick’s pretty close to the type of guarantee that you can get in this business, so I’m very proud to be a part of it. This cast is fantastic, and I mean it sincerely. I know that’s kind of cliche and we hear that a lot, but we have a pretty extraordinary cast here that invest themselves every day in this product, and it’s pretty impressive.

No, it’s not heavy. It’s a couple of pieces and we have a fantastic prosthetics team, makeup and hair team. Yeah, I think they’ve got it down to about two hours now. And, you know, over time, you know Season 1 it was more vibrant. As time has passed now, the wounds have healed a lot more, the scarring has gone down. But yeah, it’s still quite a feat to get it on in the morning, especially at 4 a.m. in the morning. You know, it’s just because I’m grumpy, really, is the only reason why.

Have any experiences particularly stood out for you in working outdoors for the series?

I don’t know if you’ve ever been in a squall, but they’re super-fun. It looks pretty spectacular on camera, because we had this whole SWAT team come in. We’re coming into this house, and the whole thing is covered in this kind of snowy, windy, squally thing that would cost $100 million anywhere else. So, it kind of adds to the element of why it is that we’re doing it. It is challenging as an actor and, therefore, challenging for the character.

No, it is interesting. You know, because it’s part of who Jamie is. He is covered in scars. He has so many all over his body, not just the back. We’ve had to try, obviously you need to keep count and know exactly where they are. We’ve actually had to lose some of the ones that he gets in the book because there were just far too many. But his body, really, he shares his experiences on his body. You get to see the life that he’s lived.

It’s a challenging environment to work out in New York City, particularly if you’re a Californian.

It’s either hot and sweaty or freezing cold, and (even then,) you’re still sweaty because you’ve got so much on. It’s a road show on the screen, but it’s also a road show as actors. We kind of truck into places and take them over for a little bit. All these environments that we work in are pretty extraordinary and extreme in some kind of circumstance, whether it’s weather or location, so it’s challenging ... and I can’t imagine having a better group of guys and girls to do it with.

8 p.m. on KVPT East Lake Meadows: A Public Housing Story Filmmaker Ken Burns is an executive producer on this new documentary from Sarah Burns, Ken’s daughter, and her husband, David McMahon, which explores the impact of racism on public housing through the prism of East Lake Meadows, a community that opened just outside Atlanta in 1970. Initially praised for its spacious units, the property turned out to be shoddily constructed and allowed to fall into disrepair as crime and drug-related violence also crept in. Despite that, it was home to some unforgettable characters also profiled in the documentary.

Vivian Howard goes ‘Somewhere South’ to find the foods that connect cultures Vivian Howard was ready to move on.

After five seasons hosting and producing her Peabody and Daytime Emmy Awardwinning culinary/documentary series “A Chef ’s Life,” about the ups and downs of running an upscale restaurant in her rural community, the Kinston, N.C.-based chef realized her interests had evolved and wanted to try something else.

She also wasn’t all that crazy about putting her personal life on camera.

Which is what led her to create “Somewhere South.” Premiering Friday, March 27, on PBS (check local listings), the six-part hourlong series sees Howard taking a culinary tour of the changing South to find the dishes that connect us all – be they noodles, hand pies, dumplings or porridges – though expressed differently in different cultures. Along the way, she learns new things and discovers how sharing a meal can create a comfortable place where meaningful conversations can take place.

Among the places she visits are Charleston, S.C., where she samples grits with rice middlins made by Gullah chefs; North Carolina, where she tries the collard sandwich, a staple of Lumbee Indian cuisine; and in Friday’s premiere, West Virginia to learn how to make the pepperoni roll, a hand food popular with local coal miners.

“Pepperoni rolls are an American adaptation of a snack in Italy or Sicily,” Howard explains, “where a lot of the coal miners in West Virginia

came from. And so they settled in Fairmont, W.Va., and because they needed to go down in the mines and have lunch, housewives were packing up rolls and sticks of pepperoni. And some ingenious housewife one day decided to roll up the pepperoni in a roll and bake it and it became really West Virginia’s ubiquitous dish.”

“I had lots of friends in West Virginia and they would come back from spring break with just trays of pepperoni rolls,” she continues, “And I had never heard of it but as a teen living in a dorm, I was like super into it, so I had this connection to the pepperoni roll and really as a hand pie or the food of labor, the food of convenience.”

In another episode, Howard heads to Savannah, Ga., to sample another crosscultural staple, the local porridge. For this, she drops in on chef Mashama Bailey at The Grey, a converted bus station, to try its variations on the traditional dish.

“We all have a porridge,” Howard says.

“Everybody has a noodle, everyone has a hand pie, everyone has a pickle. And so in the porridge episode, we really dig into grits as a porridge.”

“And so we tour her restaurant,” she continues, “and she makes a very humble porridge and a very elevated porridge. And we talk about how in the South and really like the United States over, chefs are taking very humble food traditions and exalting them and making them fancy.”

Quietly tucked between an auto shop and a truck wash, Punjabi Dhaba (2546 S. Union Ave.) food truck’s surroundings in no way reflect the quality of the food.

The menu can seem intimidating for someone who is not familiar with Indian and Pakistani food, but there are recognizable items. The samosa chaat was covered in chole (chickpea curry), red and green sauce, yogurt sauce, chutney, red onions and cilantro. The flavor profiles and the authenticity of the food make this roadside joint popular among locals and passersby.

Sometimes simple is better. In Los Tlaxcaltecas’ (912 New Stine Road) case, they feature a simple menu of tacos, quesadillas, tortas and burritos. Their asada torta was served with diced pieces of asada meat layered with avocados, tomatoes, lettuce, jalapenos and spread with mayonaise served on a toasted telera bun. You can taste the juicy flavor from the asada meat while crunching on the telera bread and everything in between. Add a little bit of their salsa verde sauce in between the torta to add a kick of spice in every bite.

There’s no shortage of places to get personal pizzas nowadays. However, pizza made fast tends to come at the cost of the crust, as a thin crust cooks faster than a traditional pizza crust. Pizza Bob’s (401 34th St.) bucks the trend of thin-crust pizzas. Pizza Bob’s Detroit-style personal pizzas are quite the deal, starting at $6 for one topping and just 30 cents for each additional topping. Overly generous with the toppings and served piping hot, Pizza Bob’s is a real pizza made real fast.

dried seaweed and kakuni, which is a tender braised pork. For an additional $3, you can add deep-fried chicken or pork katsu to add another level of texture. From the tenderness of the pork and chicken to the richness of the broth and the velvety slurp of the noodles, this is a dish that will make you want more.
