“Garth Brooks: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song” airs Sunday on PBS (check local listings).

Garth Brooks honored with the Gershwin Prize in PBS special The next time you hear a song you really love, Garth Brooks has one request.

“Do me a favor,” he says. “Go a little bit past the artist and find out who the writer is. And my thought always is ... you’ll find that other artists have covered some of their stuff. And what you’re going to find is there’s something about that writer that’s touching you even more than the artist is. And I think that’s the cool thing about songwriting.”

Sunday, March 29, on PBS (check local listings), the artist responsible for such hits as “If Tomorrow Never Comes,” “The Thunder Rolls” and his signature “Friends in Low Places” adds another honor to his ever-growing trophy case on “Garth Brooks: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song.”

Recorded March 4 at the Daughters of the American Revolution Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., the 90-minute tribute concert features performances by Keith Urban, Ricky Skaggs, Chris Stapleton, Keb’ Mo’, Lee Brice, host Jay Leno and the Howard University Choir, as well as by Brooks and his wife, Trisha Yearwood.

At 58, Brooks is the youngest artist to receive the prestigious prize and he says he’s humbled.

“I’m proud that a country artist will get to fly the country flag this week in D.C.,” he says. “There are a million people that

deserve to be in this seat more than I do but it represents the songwriters. That’s what I love and the songwriters are the seeds to everything.”

As an example, he cites “Friends in Low Places.” Written in 1989 by Earl Bud Lee and Dewayne Blackwell, the song has become what Brooks jokingly calls the “drunk anthem of our lifetime” but he explains that it was originally intended for another artist.

“I was the voice they chose to pitch ‘Friends in Low Places’ to George Strait,” he recalls, “so I got to be there from the very first downbeat. And the last thing I told him was, ‘Hey, I’m on the verge of getting a record deal myself ...’ I didn’t get finished, the door closed and that was it.

“But it worked out,” he continues.

“The song kind of hung around for about a year and a half in (Nashville), and when they heard I got my record deal, they said, ‘Hey, do you remember this song?’ And I said, ‘I’ve been singing it every day since.’ They said, ‘Would you think about cutting it?’ ... So we went in, cut ‘Friends in Low Places’ in a (small) room ... and then we crammed 50-75 people in there for the sing-along at the end and it was great.”

Since the time I have been on the vaccine, it seems like the proliferation of disease in my body has slowed dramatically. “I’ve had things go on� health-wise, Keays allows, “but at least for me, this vaccine has allowed me to deal with the metastasis and other things – with chemotherapy, with radiation – whereas at this point in lung cancer, there’s usually such an explosion of disease in the body that I feel very lucky to have been able to find Cuba and find a vaccine.�

For some people, a personal health crisis means going wherever a potential solution exists ... even if it means defying their own government to do so. “Cuba’s Cancer Hope,� a new episode of the seminal PBS science series “NOVA� airing Wednesday, April 1 (check local listings), traces the determination of several Americans to cross international lines to seek treatment for their illness in another country where vaccines for cancer fall under a trade embargo by America – so they technically are breaking the law. The hour-long program profiles the researchers who developed the drugs while explaining how Cuba became an unlikely player in leading the charge against the disease, dating back to the reign of Fidel Castro.

PBS chief Paula Kerger suggested the story as a “NOVA� project, and writerproducer-director Llewellyn Smith says he then was surprised to learn that “there’s an extraordinary biopharma industry that Cuba has developed and has been actually fairly active (with) in the world for well over 20 years. Most of us really don’t have access to that, because it would be illegal for us to go to Cuba for treatment.

There’s an impression we have of Cuba as being fairly backward technologically, sort of immature, but the rest of the world is very much aware of Cuban science and very respectful of that.�

for Boreanaz to get his next series, which also would enjoy a substantial run: “Bones,” which lasted 12 years, cast him as an FBI agent who found an investigative partner in a forensic anthropologist (Emily Deschanel).

Boreanaz also directed 11 episodes of the show.

Boreanaz carried his “Bones” role as Seeley Booth into guest shots on two other Fox shows, “American Dad!” (in voice only) and “Sleepy Hollow.” He also voiced his animated likeness on “Family Guy.” In 2017, just after he ended his long run on “Bones,” Boreanaz began the program on which he currently appears – the CBS drama “SEAL Team,” featuring him as Bravo Team leader Jason Hayes. An executive producer of the show as well, Boreanaz also has directed two episodes of it thus far.

The father of a son and a daughter with his second wife, model-actress Jaime Bergman Boreanaz, Boreanaz is a business partner with her and others in the nail-polish company Chrome Girl.

A hockey fan, he particularly supports the Philadelphia Flyers.

David Boreanaz was born on May 19, 1969, in Buffalo, N.Y. His father was a local television personality under the name “Dave Roberts,” and his mother was a travel agent.They moved him and his two older sisters to Philadelphia, where his father took another TV job when David was seven.

After graduating from Ithaca College with a cinema degree, Boreanaz took behind-the-scenes jobs and made uncredited on-camera appearances while also seeking sizable acting roles.

Eventually landing a guest part on “Married ... With Children,” Boreanaz then began what would be the first of his long-running television parts, playing Angel on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” – a job he got at the recommendation of a neighbor who knew “Buffy” executive producer Marti Noxon and saw Boreanaz frequently walking his dog.

After a couple of seasons on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” Boreanaz starred in the spinoff “Angel,” which also brought him work in the movies “Valentine” and “I’m With Lucy.” After the five seasons of “Angel” (on which he made his directorial debut with an episode as well), it didn’t take long

What’s your first memory of having seen “The Ten Commandments”?

I think I was probably three or four when they first showed it to me, and it was kind of scary.

I mean, you’ve got plagues and the burning bush and slavery and mud pits, not to mention the parting of the Red Sea. With anybody who sees the movie at a young age, it affects your understanding of the stories in the Bible that no amount of reading can ever bring home to you in the same way.

It’s sort of a part of my DNA. I was only three months old when I was cast by (director) Cecil B. DeMille. In fact, my mother got a

Are there favorite movies of yours that you still hope to show on “Noir Alley”?

The great thing is that in the past, I have restored films and shown them at my film festival through the Film Noir Foundation, then out of that grew this relationship with the DVD label Flicker Alley. We could put them on home video for a select group of cinephiles who know where to look, then those films invariably end up on TCM. We just showed “Trapped,” which was a restoration – and “Repeat Performance,” which I restored years ago, but there were some rights entanglements. And there are more films like that in the pipeline.

Your father was a boxing writer.

As an author as well as a host, do you feel your career reflects his influence?

My dad barely graduated from high school, then he started working for the newspaper, and I feel very much that that is part of me. There was never any question that you could make a living telling stories, or putting a tale in a readable fashion. It was his passion for the sport, and his nose for knowing where to dig out a good story.

He was also a very good public speaker, and that is clearly where I got my complete lack of anxiety about public speaking. I understand that most people’s biggest fear is having to stand up and speak in public, but I have to tell you, that’s one of the only times I’m completely relaxed.

That’s just my thing, that I can do that and feel very calm about it ... so yeah, I got all of that from my dad.

How do you find it to work with your husband, “Black Monday” co-creator and executive producer David Caspe?

I didn’t do the heavy, heavy lifting of it, but writing a show takes so long, I’m obviously so proud. I also see all the work that they put into it. It’s been ... how many years in the making? 14?

Our children have suffered for this.

In the aftermath of your leaving “Saturday Night Live,” on which you spent two seasons as a cast member, your careers as both actress and writer have been thriving. You must be very gratified by that.

I was not sure (how that would work out), so I appreciate it so much!

Did you have any special requests for developing your character, jeans-company heiress Tiffany Georgina, in Season 2 of “Black Monday”?

I did want, this season, a Princess Diana/Nancy Reagan wig – and I felt like (the producers) were very supportive of that.

I’m a writer myself, and I think it’s hard for an actor to be seen in a different light sometimes – and to get to play such an ‘80s b–– in this, it’s a much different character from the one on “Happy Endings” (on which Wilson also worked with Caspe). I’m always selfishly like, “What have you got?,” when I read something of his.

With your husband as one of the creators, how do you find it to be in on the inception of a show like “Black Monday”?

It’s great that a whole new generation that may not have seen it on the big screen, or even on DVD, can now see it fully restored. I played it on my big screen at home recently, and it was like you could just walk into the screen and step onto a chariot and ride through the desert. It’s pretty amazing.

Trisha Yearwood on cooking for family and friends – with or without Garth Trisha Yearwood likes to experiment when she’s creating recipes for one of her cookbooks or her Food Network series “Trisha’s Southern Kitchen.” So she’s often open to suggestions from her husband, fellow country artist Garth Brooks.

“That’s one of the things that I’ve learned really from Garth, actually,” she explains. “I was always like, ‘Follow the recipes to the letter’ and he was always was the, ‘What if you throw tortellini in there? How would that be?’

“Tortellini’s a thing for him,” she adds with a laugh, “but it really did kind of get me to stop being so rigid. ... So it’s fun to take something that kind of is basic that you know and then throw in some tortellini and see what happens.”

Now in its 16th season Saturdays at midday, the 30-minute program returns Yearwood to the kitchen to share more of her favorite family recipes. As a skilled home cook with no formal training, she delights in making home-cooked meals when she’s not recording or touring. Whether it’s for family, bandmates or a day with the girls, there is always a story behind each of Yearwood’s recipes.

Interestingly, Yearwood’s culinary career came about as the result of a family project.

She was interested in preserving all her family’s recipes in a cookbook. The result was the 2008 bestseller “Georgia Cooking in an Oklahoma Kitchen.” Two other bestselling cookbooks followed, as did “Trisha’s Southern Kitchen,” which won a Daytime Emmy Award in 2013.

It’s been a labor of love ever since.

“I think I cook like most people do,” Yearwood says. “I didn’t think when I was a little girl that I was going to have a cooking show. I just liked to cook and the first book was a chance for me to get the recipes of my mom, my day and my grandparents all together. You know, most of us have those family cookbooks and if you don’t have one I encourage you to do it because when those folks are gone and those things aren’t written down, you’re going to wish you had them. That was really the goal for the first book.

“Never did I dream it would turn into this,” she continues. “But because it comes out of something that I really enjoy and I get to have those people – my sister, my best buddies – on the show, I get to keep my folks alive and I get to make those recipes and tell those stories, and it’s been really a joy. It’s something I really didn’t even know I wanted to do that I really enjoy doing.”
