Fifty years later, that awareness is arguably at an all-time high and we’ve made significant gains in addressing problems but science has proven we still have a long way to go. And it is on that note that a number of services will offer up environmentally-oriented programming in prime time on Wednesday, April 22. Probably the most noteworthy is “Jane Goodall: The Hope,” airing on National Geographic, Nat Geo Wild and Nat Geo Mundo. Directed by Kim Woodard (“Border Wars”) and Elizabeth Leiter (“Mars”), the two-hour documentary tells the story of the primatologist’s four decades of advocacy work for chimpanzees and follows her in her travels in California, Sri Lanka and Florida to show how she has made a difference in animal conservation. There will also be a live segment from Australia with weather anchor Sam Champion of “Good Morning America.” Immediately preceding on Nat Geo and Nat Geo Wild is “Born Wild: Earth Day Live,” which as the title indicates is hosted live by ABC News anchor Robin Roberts from the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito, Calif. This hourlong event combines live footage with prerecorded segments to give a revealing look at the next generation of baby animals and their ecosystems and the environmental challenges they face in places such as Florida, Minnesota, Sir Lanka, Australia and Kenya. Very appropriate to today’s world is Discovery Channel’s “The Story of
Plastic,” which shines the spotlight on the environmental damage and human rights abuses that occur throughout the entire life cycle of plastic, not just when it’s disposed of. It also reveals how the plastics industry is stepping up its production of single-use plastic products while at the same time blaming wasteful consumers for plastic pollution. The solution, the film posits, lies in stopping their mass production all together. Also quite relevant is the PBS documentary “Climate Change: The Facts” (check local listings), which brings together leading climate scientists to explain what might happen if global warming increases 1.5 degrees and examines the consequences of rising temperatures on ice sheets, fragile ecosystems, developing communities and extreme weather events. Personal accounts of California wildfires, extreme coastal flooding in Louisiana and increasing temperatures in Australia paint vivid pictures of these devastating effects. Currently available for the younger set on Apple TV+ is “Here We Are: Notes for Living on Planet Earth.” Based on the bestselling book by Oliver Jeffers, the animated short film follows the journey of a precocious 7-year-old who over the course of Earth Day learns about the wonders of the planet from his parents and visits a mysterious exhibit at an edifice known as the Museum of Everything. Meryl Streep narrates the program, with Ruth Negga (“Preacher”), Chris O’Dowd (“Mary Poppins Returns”) and Jacob Tremblay (“The Smurfs 2”) providing the characters’ voices.

We go after them and get them specifically for ‘Noir Alley.”’ The son of a boxing writer, Muller appreciates that “the titles are so great” in film noir. “I have actually programmed festivals just to see two titles on a marquee together. My all-time favorite was, ‘I Wake Up Screaming’ ‘In a Lonely Place.”’

If anyone is an appropriate guide for a weekly stroll down “Noir Alley,” it’s Eddie Muller. The expert on film-noir pictures – with their questionable morality, shady ladies and business conducted in the shadows, often literally – established the Film Noir Foundation and oversees related festivals, and he’s also the author of several books on the subject. Additionally, he’s the host of the similarly themed showcase Turner Classic Movies presents Saturday nights and Sunday mornings, with Muller typically applying his sly humor to the wealth of facts he offers on the given week’s attraction. “I’m very happy that they have given me so much freedom and latitude to do what I do, and the time to do it,” he says of his TCM association. “And they built me that fantastic set, and I couldn’t be happier.” Though he gives a bounty of information in his segments surrounding each movie, Muller allows, “I have to leave something for the repeats, so sometimes, I have to rein myself in.” The “Noir Alley” feature the weekend of April 25-26 is 1953’s “Wicked Woman” with title star Beverly Michaels, who later married the film’s director (Russell Rouse). Subsequent weeks boast such evocative titles as “Fallen Angel,” “The Crimson Kimono” (directed by the legendary Samuel Fuller) and “Cornered,” plus the original version of “A Kiss Before Dying” and the Joan

While co-starring on “Mike & Molly,” Mixon continued her movie work with roles in “Take Shelter” (for which the cast was nominated for a Gotham Independent Film Award), “Drive Angry,” “Minions” (in voice only) and “Hell or High Water” (earning a Critics’ Choice Movie Award nomination for its acting ensemble). During that time, Mixon also appeared on television on “Robot Chicken” (in voice only, supplying the words of “Spider-Man’s” Mary Jane Watson) and “Psych.” Since 2016, Mixon’s principal project has been the ABC sitcom “American Housewife,” which moved to a Wednesday slot recently. She stars as Katie Otto, a family woman who takes frequent pleasure in opposing her tony Connecticut neighbors, though that sometimes causes embarrassment for her college-professor husband (Diedrich Bader) and children (Meg Donnelly, Daniel DiMaggio, Julia Butters). Though she reportedly was in a relationship with Bobby Deen – son of fellow celebrity chef Paula Deen – for several years, Mixon now is married to retired track-and-field athlete Breaux Greer. They have a son and a daughter.

Katy Mixon was born on March 30, 1981, in Pensacola, Fla. One of seven siblings, she studied at the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham, graduated from the Pensacola Private School of Liberal Arts, and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama. Mixon made her professional acting debut in 2001, as Calpurnia in a staging of “Julius Caesar” by the Utah Shakespearean Festival. She relocated to Los Angeles in 2003, then began to land roles in such movies as “Four Christmases,” “The Informers,” “State of Play” and “All About Steve.” After doing a couple of unsold series pilots, Mixon made guest appearances on the shows “My Name Is Earl” and “Two and a Half Men,” then she got her first major television part as April Buchanon on HBO’s “Eastbound & Down.” In 2010, Mixon began her run as Victoria Flynn – the morals-challenged beautician sister of Melissa McCarthy’s character – on “Mike & Molly,” the Chuck Lorre-produced CBS sitcom that ran for six seasons (and continues as a syndication staple in repeats).

How much does the presence of a studio audience help your performance?
How would you describe your style as the director, as well as the star, of “Better Things”?
A lot. I really like a live situation because I’m a stand-up comedian and I have been for 20 years. So just getting the reactions from your entrances and exits ... really does kind of do it for you more than other things (laughs). And also delivering the jokes is really fun because, especially in a multicam like this, there’s a lot of heart in it but there’s a lot of one-liners. You know, the ability to be able to do a one-liner and then in the next take do another one, like a different one – maybe they weren’t laughing at this one. And then all the writers will get together and be like, “OK, now on the third take, try this joke.” And that might be the best one and the audience is always surprised. And you know, the audience never really lies. You can kind of tell what the best joke is from the three times you do it because of the measure of which they laugh (laughs).
In a way, yeah, they can, especially with – you know, it’s a multicam, there are many cameras going at once so you can edit it all together. But when it’s replacing a line, yeah, for sure, you see what’s the funniest. Do you have any leeway for improv within that?
Yeah ... but they have an amazing staff who are always there on set during the tape nights so they would pitch you things and then I would sometimes be like, “OK, well what about that part ...?” We would all kind of collaborate together and that was a really fun part of it.
Is there any change to your process for the show, and its mature content, now that FX is owned by Disney?
No change. I’ve been working for Disney for years and years and years, doing animation (via voice work). And what is exciting for me was when I was doing the marketing shoot, (I was told about) FX being on Hulu, and it’s my No. 1 dream that more people can see the show. And hopefully, that’s going to happen with us premiering on Hulu. Every single time I’m on a plane, I go on the (seatback video) screen and (“Better Things” is) never on. So I call FX, and they’re like, “We can’t do anything about it, it’s the buyers” ... so I’m very excited for it to be more accessible and for people to watch this show, because I love the show. Are you used to working with a free hand creatively?
I have a very healthy communication with my network, and every time they give me a note – which is not often – it’s never mandatory, but it always makes my show better. It either makes me dig my heels in and know that the choice I’ve made is right, or it makes me think about doing it in a different way.

I love that (actor-director John) Cassavetes came up with all of that stuff, and documentaries in the ’80s and all of that. I like it when a camera is on somebody who is not talking, and if somebody’s outside of a frame. It’s just very organic. It’s like the whole thing is kind of living and breathing, and I like it. I like lights to be contrast-y and weird. I like practical light. It’s just my aesthetic that I try to put into the show, so I’m lucky enough that my network enables me to do that.

Quarantined and bored? Try new recipes from YouTube The old adage that familiarity breeds contempt holds especially true in this time of quarantining. For the foodie, that can mean what you eat. With restaurants closed, you’ve likely been doing a lot of cooking for yourself and by now you’re probably sick to death of it. The thought of consuming another meatloaf, roasted chicken or spaghetti dinner produced by your own hand makes you physically ill. This, of course, is no reflection on your actual skill in the kitchen. So what to do? YouTube has plenty of novel ideas for meals to make in this age of no eating out. So log on and check out some recipes that you can make today with what is in your pantry. That’s certainly on Gordon Ramsay’s mind in his “Quick & Simple Recipes” (www. youtube.com/watch?vmhDJNfV7hjk), in which the chef, restaurateur and TV personality shows how to make delicious dinners from such staples as pasta, chicken breast, flour, eggs, potatoes and cheese. His gnocchi looks incredible as well as easy and his mantra “simple is always the most impressive” certainly rings true here. For those who like to employ their instant pots, “31+ Pandemic Recipes in the Instant Pot” (www.youtube.com/watch?vbZq-_4_skSc) may have a few possibilities. Here, host Lisa Childs shows how to make cheap and easy meals using your emergency stores of frozen
and nonperishable food. Her offerings range from standards such as oatmeal and mac and cheese to more offbeat fare like Hawaiian meatballs and lime cilantro rice. Chow down while shut down. Sam the Cooking Guy wants you to eat more interestingly while sheltering in place in his multi-part “Quarantine (Lockdown) Munchies” (www.youtube.com/ watch?vh0GMUXSdYaI), in which he shows how to make quick and easy recipes that feature poultry, ground beef, pasta, eggs and more. Among the offerings are a chicken noodle wonton soup, chili mac and cheese, a chicken and ramen noodles stir fry, Mexican chips and dip and a fritata. Imaginative fare made from commonplace items. For those trying to eat healthy, check out the Happy Pear’s “Whole Food Immune Boosting Stew” (www.youtube.com/watch?v_ AXpf3YiuIU), a Greek concoction they call a “Mediterranean minestrone” and is thought to have properties that promote longevity. Among the items you’ll need are carrots, broccoli, leeks, broccoli, vegetable stock and several kinds of beans. A meal high in anti-oxidants. On the heartier side is the Quarantine Cookbook’s “Pandemic Pot Roast” (www. youtube.com/watch?vLubu0_cHJpg), a recipe made in the instant pot with chuck roast, various vegetables and spices, tomato paste, red wine and Worcestershire sauce.
