Class warfare engulfs post-apocalyptic survivors aboard ‘Snowpiercer’ in TNT sci-fi drama

An attempt to stem climate change backfires, plunging Earth into a new ice age and some of its inhabitants into a struggle to survive aboard an enormous train circling the frozen globe in a sci-fi series debuting on TNT. In “Snowpiercer,” premiering Sunday, May 17, those survivors wind up on an ark-like supertrain of the same name, created by a rich visionary named Mr. Wilford, who foresaw the impending apocalypse and wanted to ensure humanity’s survival. It is here on this 1,001-car juggernaut where the haves, the have-nots and the unlawful are segregated into separate sections.

While the commoners in the back of the train cope with overcrowding and dwindling food rations, the biggest problem the rich face in the elegant front is body-shaming in the sauna. But when a murder occurs that could upend life on board, former homicide detective Layton (Daveed Diggs, “black-ish”) is plucked from the back or “the tail” to investigate.

Among those aboard are the head of hospitality Melanie (Jennifer Connelly, “A Beautiful Mind”) and her right hand, Ruth (Alison Wright, “The Americans”); Bess (Mickey Sumner, “Frances Ha”), a member of the train’s police force; Jinju (Susan Park, “Ghostbusters”), the train’s head agricultural officer; Bennett (Iddo Goldberg, “Peaky Blinders”), an engineer who knows the train end to end; and LJ (Annalise Basso, “Oculus”), the nihilistic teen daughter of a powerful family.

The story, which is based on the graphic novel series and the 2013 film

from director Bong Joon Ho (who is also an executive producer here), is heavy on class warfare and social injustice as the politics of survival play out and everyone tries to keep their secrets under wraps.

That is especially true of Connelly’s character Melanie, as the actress told a recent gathering of journalists in Pasadena, Calif.

“I felt like the person that you first meet in Episode 1 is very different from the person you come to know by the end of the first season,” she says. “And it’s a kind of gradual unfolding as you come to understand what she’s been hiding, what she’s been carrying, things that she’s been compartmentalizing. I think a lot of that is ... brought about by her relationship with Layton. She’s forced to confront choices that she’s made and who she is, and who she’s become.

“And that’s sort of a gradual process and also is not entirely linear,” she continues. “And I found that a very rewarding process going through that and watching that character unfold ... .”

Similarly, Diggs’ character of Layton also has some skeletons in his closet.

“I think you spend a lot of time as an actor thinking about your secrets, like what you’re character’s secrets are,” Diggs says. “And particularly I spent so much time in the tail, which is very, very confined because of the amount of people in there. You realize that like having a secret is kind of impossible in that situation. So that was an interesting. I think it informed a lot of my choices, this idea that like privacy didn’t exist.”

In hosting “Labor of Love,” Davis allows that she might be bringing much more of herself than expected.

“I asked the (other) producers, ‘Are you looking to hire Charlotte, or are you looking to hire Kristin? Because they’re pretty different.’ Kristin might have a more nontraditional way of looking at family than Charlotte, who was very focused on marriage – and I’m not. I tried to bring that point of view, that you have a lot of choices in today’s world on how to become a mother. And they wanted that.”

Kristin Davis appears to be in the right place in entering the reality-series field.

The actress’ “Sex and the City” character, wide-eyed and well-meaning Charlotte, was intent on becoming a wife and mother ... as is the woman at the heart of Fox’s “Labor of Love,” premiering Thursday, May 21. Also a producer of the show, Davis plays host as Kristy Katzmann – a Season 11 contestant on ABC’s “The Bachelor” – chooses among 15 suitors she assesses not only to marry, but to father the child she wants to have soon.

Davis explains she was matched to “Labor of Love” from knowing executive producer Ben Silverman and other producers of the show who also have worked on “Project Runway,” on which Davis was a guest judge.

“We had maybe five female producers and developers, and we got together and talked about our journeys to motherhood,” says the single adoptive parent of two. “It was fascinating to talk about it, and about how we’d make a show that wasn’t super-serious, but about what it means to be at that age where you have to decide one way or the other (about becoming a mother). Which is a reality.”

Davis adds “we had a lot of stress” about finding men ready for fatherhood, but it turned out that that part was easy.

There were so many men who were supersuccessful, but they had been so focused on their careers ... just like the women. It’s the same story, but you’re not so aware of it on the men’s side.“

loose approach that relies as much on personality as it does on the facts of the day’s stories. As is traditional for those holding that job, anchoring the weekday newscast “World News This Morning” (now known as “America This Morning”) came along with that for Muir.

Muir started to become an evening presence on ABC in 2007 by anchoring the Saturday edition of “ABC World News,” then he added the Sunday edition in 2012. A year after that, coanchoring the newsmagazine “20/20” also became a part of Muir’s duties.

After years of reporting for ABC News from such sites as Gaza, Ukraine, Somalia, Iran, Egypt and Japan, Muir was chosen in 2014 to succeed Diane Sawyer as the anchor (as well as the managing editor) of the weeknight “ABC World News.” He continues in that role, and also in his “20/20” job as he shares the anchoring with Amy Robach now.

Honorary degrees have been bestowed upon Muir – who is a guest co-anchor of ABC’s “Good Morning America” and “The View” occasionally – by Ithaca College and Northeastern University.

David Jason Muir was born on Nov. 8, 1973, in Syracuse, N.Y. He graduated magna cum laude from nearby Ithaca College with a journalism degree, and he also attended Georgetown University and the University of Salamanca in Spain during his schooling.

Even before his college graduation in the mid-1990s, Muir began working at WTNH-TV in his hometown of Syracuse.

Early in his career, his anchor-reporter role took him to Israel, where he earned notice and acclaim for his reports on the overseas climate following the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. The Radio-Television News Directors Association and The Associated Press were among the organizations that gave him awards at the time.

In 2000, Muir began a three-year stint as ABC’s Boston affiliate WCVBTV, where a pivotal story for him was the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Honors he received during that period included an Edward R. Murrow Award.

Upon joining the ABC network in 2003, Muir became an anchor of the overnight “World News Now,” a program known for its relatively

Now that you’re back on “The View” as a recurring guest host while your program “Strahan & Sara & Keke” is on hiatus, how have you found it to return to your previous weekday base?

As Season 3 of “Burden of Truth” opens, your lawyer character Joanna is both the personal and professional partner of Billy (played by Peter Mooney). Are you satisfied with the progression of their relationship?

There’s no silver lining to what’s going on in these awful times, but “The View” has always been a dream come true for me. There are so many amazing people there, it’s really a cast that never leaves. From the crew to the people on the editorial side, it’s been great to get back with all my friends.

Absolutely. One thing we’ve realized is that we can take that and build on it every year, and I liked jumping right in and seeing what it’s like for people who haven’t been in a lot of relationships – and who live together and work together, and how that plays out when you’re also dealing with emotional baggage.

I’m so happy (at “Strahan & Sara & Keke”), it’s bigger than I ever could have imagined, but to have some time back at a place that feels like home and so comfortable has been great. Plus, they needed us ... although while everyone else was (broadcasting from) home and I was only doing the part at the table (in the studio), I was like, “Why am I even here?” We don’t pretend that the world won’t go on without us, but technically, you’re figuring it out and doing things that have never been done before.

What would you say about the childcustody case that fuels their legal efforts this season?

I am so honored, once again, to be a part of it ... but just as much a part of me is the sillier side.

Where I’ve always sought comfort when I’m anxious or depressed or struggling is in laughter, and comedy is distraction. What a dream in one lifetime to have sat in these two places, because they play off really equal parts of who I am.

I think that it always will. She’s dealt with her father to a large degree, but the fact is, how do you get over his being murdered and everything that he did? How much she identifies with him, that’s not going to ever go away, so he’s still very present in her psyche.

Also, there are the ways in which he wasn’t bad, and she’s able to pull those apart and see that she learned some things from her father that are good. Even if he was a horrible human being.

The custody case is something that brings them back to (the town of) Millwood, and Joanna has to deal with another part of her history, something that she’s kind of hidden and that has been very impactful for her as an adult ... but she’s never told anyone about it. It weaves through what she’s struggling with in her relationship with Billy.

Though you have your own weekday show now, does being back on “The View” during this period give you a hankering to be back there more regularly?

(Former “View” co-host) Meredith Vieira is an icon to me, and to have watched it and to have the honor to be at that table – sitting there even once – there’s a tingling in my skin when I’m even near that place. I do miss the show. I love being a part of such important conversations politically, and right now, people are looking for comfort and information and conversation.
