The Story of Roy Cohn Ivy Meeropol’s unflinching documentary looks back at the infamous attorney who prosecuted the filmmaker’s grandparents, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, and later argued successfully for their execution. The film chronicles the life of Cohn from his work as chief counsel to Sen. Joseph McCarthy in the late 1950s through the 1980s, when he became a darling of the Reagan White House.

Inspired by extraordinary acts of heroism and humanitarian aid happening around the globe, this year’s ceremony will shift its customary focus from the year’s outstanding athletic achievements to highlight stories of service, perseverance and courage in the sports world. The program also will incorporate the 2020 Sport Humanitarian Awards, usually presented separately.

Matthew Rhys is HBO’s new, very different ‘Perry Mason’ Any preconceived notion you might have of “Perry Mason” is about to be tossed out of court.

The most enduring image of novelist Erle Stanley Gardner’s iconic character surely is the urbane defense attorney played by Raymond Burr in a 1957-66 television classic that remains a staple of nostalgia-driven networks. However, a younger, scrappier Mason fuels a limited HBO series debuting Sunday, June 21. Executive-produced by Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan, and set in the Depression era, it casts Matthew Rhys (“The Americans”) in the title role while exploring Mason’s roots as an unconventional detective as much as a nascent lawyer.

“That is why I jumped at the opportunity,” the friendly Rhys confirms of helping to generate a new Mason.

“When the initial call came, this strange thing went through my head: ‘Perry Mason?’ I realize more and more that I’d had a unique relationship to it without necessarily having a true grasp of what it was. I was aware of the (original) show, but in true recollection, I wasn’t sure that I ever watched it ... though my grandparents did.

“You feel like you know this identity of a trial lawyer who got everybody to confess on the stand,” adds Rhys, “but as soon as you heard that HBO was remaking ‘Perry Mason,’ you knew immediately, ‘Well, OK. That’s going

to be a very different take.’ And it is.

It’s the origin story of how he became a trial lawyer, and I thought, ‘Oh, how interesting.’ And then I read the first script, and that was that.”

Such other familiar characters as Della Street (now played by Juliet Rylance) and Paul Drake (Chris Chalk) also are reinvented by the “Perry Mason” reboot.

John Lithgow (as Mason’s mentor in the law), Tatiana Maslany (“Orphan Black”) and Robert Patrick (“Scorpion”) are among the cast members as well. HBOseries veteran Tim Van Patten (“Game of Thrones,” “The Sopranos”) is the director and an executive producer of the show.

In preparing to play Mason, the Welsh-born Rhys – the real-life partner of his fellow “Americans” star Keri Russell – had a valuable resource in Tom Hanks while they made the recent movie “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” since Hanks had done the similarly styled 2002 film “Road to Perdition.”

“When you’re engulfed in something on this kind of scale, it’s hard not to believe the world you’re in,” Rhys reasons of the “Perry Mason” costumes and production design that are so evocative of the early 1930s. “You don’t see anything but hundreds of supporting actors in the costumes and cars, and whole streets have been made to look the way they were then, so it only strengthens the make-believe.”

Sunday, June 21, is a day for all dads this year ... including some of the screen’s best.

Turner Classic Movies marks Father’s Day in the expected way, as daytime host Alicia Malone and nighttime guide Ben Mankiewicz present a number of films revolving around male heads of households. While each has his own circumstances, and in a variety of stories, all of them share a devotion to their families.

The Dad-themed attractions start early that day with “Fiddler on the Roof,” director Norman Jewison’s 1971 version of the stage-musical hit, with Topol as milkman Tevye – father to five very marriageable daughters. The morning’s Eddie Muller-hosted “Noir Alley” title, Samuel Fuller’s “Underworld U.S.A.” (1961), even has a parental tie: Cliff Robertson plays a man determined to avenge his father’s murder by mobsters.

“Our Vines Have Tender Grapes” (1945) offers one of Edward G. Robinson’s most touching performances, as a Norwegian farmer and father in the American Midwest. “The Entertainer” (1960) goes darker with a dad, with Laurence Olivier as a theater performer whose daughter (Joan Plowright, who married Olivier after they did the film and the play that inspired it) knows he’s hardly the warm-and-fuzzy type.

Keegan-Michael Key was born on March 22, 1971, in Southfield, Mich.

He was adopted as a child by two social workers, and though he had two half-brothers by his biological father, he didn’t know until after both of his halfsiblings (one of whom was comic-book writer Dwayne McDuffie) had passed.

Key earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in theater from the University of Detroit Mercy, then a Master of Fine Arts degree in theater from Pennsylvania State University.

“MADtv” was Key’s first major television stop as he became a regular cast member in 2004, during the sketch show’s ninth season. He often was teamed with Jordan Peele; among the many personalities Key impersonated on the program were President Barack Obama, Lionel Richie, Sidney Poitier, Bill Cosby, Eddie Murphy, Snoop Dogg and Tyler Perry.

Key reunited with Peele for the series “Key & Peele,” which premiered in 2012 and lasted five seasons. During the run of that show, Peele portrayed one of his characters from it – Luther, Obama’s Anger Translator – at the 2015 White House Correspondents

6 p.m. on COOK Good Eats: Reloaded In the new(ish) episode “Take Stock: The Reload,” host Alton Brown takes another run at an illuminating show from 2003 that taught home cooks how to make their own stock, whether it be veggie-, beef- or chicken-based. That was well over a decade ago, though, and now Brown has some new thoughts on how to create a better, more flavorful, faster chicken stock and then turn that into a soup in less than two hours, start to finish.

How has the restaurant business been for you with everything being closed?

Feminism icon Gloria Steinem – portrayed by you in the “Great Performances” presentation “Gloria: A Life” – also was a figure in the recent drama series “Mrs. America.” What do you think of her re-entry into the public consciousness in such a big way?

You know, tough ... as you can imagine with just under 40 restaurants globally. We never saw this coming. So fingers crossed, we’re weeks away from reopening. What we’ve done in the meantime is to redevelop all our menus, reposition the dining rooms with more adequate space, remove 35 percent of the tables in the dining room, become a lot more sort of personal with less descriptions and just making these menus a little bit more fruitful. And as always, in the starting gates and raring to go.

You change your look a number of times in the course of playing Steinem through the years. How was that process for you?

Anytime I can look more like Gloria Steinem, I love it. I had great help with hair and makeup and, of course, the costumes. It was really fun. Gloria’s a friend of mine, so it was a little more daunting, I think, than usual. The first runthrough, I remember I was so nervous, and my heart was beating (rapidly). I was so dry-mouthed because it was my friend, and she hadn’t seen it. Then, she was so gracious and so generous that after that, it was smooth sailing.

When you look at how many other businesses are affected by restaurants, you realize that’s a lot of people.

Especially knowing her well, do you find it paradoxical that Steinem wasn’t a public speaker by nature?

Gloria has a phobia, still to this day, about public speaking. She was this sort of reluctant activist, because that’s not what she did. She was a writer, so she went to a speech therapist, and she actually describes it in the play by saying that she feels like she has an angora sweater around every tooth. That’s how dry her mouth was.

She comes with lots of throat lozenges and cough drops, just to keep her mouth moving and lubricated .. but I think she’s come into her own, obviously. At the age of 86, she’s now able to speak in a quite relaxed and, of course, passionate way.

The obstacle course on “Ultimate Tag” looks fun but for obvious reasons you and your brothers never got to try it, correct?

Why would you do that?” or “Why did you pick that?” and then you get impressed and “Oh wow, I didn’t even think about that.” So there’s definitely both sides of it where you’re not rooting for any one particular person but if it’s getting heated and you kind of see something coming to a battle there. It’s like, “Oh, why did you do that? You coulda got away.”

been interesting. We had arguments on who would have done better on each course and stuff like that, so it was fun to watch and live vicariously through the contestants and commentate Yeah, none of us truly participated in the course. We was pretty cool. walked around the course and ... we truly didn’t partake in Did you find yourself any of the racing or any of playing the game mentally, even a fun test trial. We didn’t considering how you would do any of that, obviously, for attack each challenge? other reasons. But the course was definitely something that Oh for sure. Gloria’s had an amazing couple of years. There’s also a Julie Taymor(-directed) feature film called “The Glorias.” Gloria, I mean, she’s everywhere ... and she needs to be everywhere.

I’m so thrilled for her at this age that everyone’s beginning to really learn about her.

But we will get through this. There’s no two ways about that and there’s already hundreds of emails: “When are you opening?” “Can we be the first?” “We can’t wait to get out of the house.” So there will be a need to get back to that amazing level of eating. I just can’t wait for it to happen sooner than later.

Top of the food chain. There are producers and that level of hospitality, whether it’s the service, the busboys, the busgirls and the suppliers, so we’ve got to get back – and we will do it. So it’s about holding your nerves, restoring confidence and reassuring staff. But it’s the first time in my career secretly I’ve ever had to say, “Stop.” So I had a whale of a time. The last four weeks for me have been one of the most sort of exciting and emotional months in my entire career because I’ve never, ever, ever woken up from 30 days on the trots and thought, “S...! I’ve got nothing to do.”

Imbibe like a star with celebritycreated spirits Celebrities who put their names on spirit brands generally fall into two categories – those who are merely doing an endorsement (and getting a nice passive revenue stream) and those who are invested in it.

It is those latter folks, those who have “skin in the game,” who love the liquor in question, have had a say in its design and care deeply about the craft of distilling.

They really want to put their money into something they believe is a quality product.

And more and more of them are getting into the business, hoping to share their love of spirits with the buying public. Such as the following.

George Clooney, Casamigos Tequila: The Oscar-winning actor and producer and his pals restaurant mogul Rande Gerber and Discovery Land Company CEO Mike Meldman, came up with the idea for a tequila meant to be consumed “on the rocks, by the shot and at times straight from the bottle.” Four years after its founding, the brand was so successful that Diageo bought it for $1 billion in 2017.

Sam Heughan, The Sassenach: The “Outlander” actor’s love of whiskey dates back to his teens in his native Scotland and through his Great Glen Company recently created what he believes is “the perfect whiskey blend,” one that pleases his palate and he hopes that of others. He even thinks his character of Highlands warrior Jamie

Fraser would approve. “Jamie makes it,” he quipped.

Marilyn Manson, Absinthe Mansinthe: A 2000 vacation in the South of France with Johnny Depp introduced the controversial rocker to absinthe and he fell in love and created this Swiss-made spirit. Though greeted by mixed reviews, the brand did win a gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2008.

Dan Aykroyd, Crystal Head Vodka: Noting the lack of additive-free vodka on the market, the “Ghostbusters” actor partnered with artist John Alexander to conceive the idea for this spirit, a blend quadruple-distilled from Canadian sweet corn with a $55 per quart price tag and a unique skull-shaped bottle.

Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, Dos Hombres Mezcal: The former “Breaking Bad” co-stars were in a New York sushi bar when they hatched the idea for this “perfect” artisinal mezcal, a unique blend of what they say is “the finest Espadin agave, handselected from the hillsides of a small village in Oaxaca, Mexico.” At over $60 a quart, it’s unquestionably top shelf.

Ryan Reynolds, Aviation Gin: The “Deadpool” actor acquired a stake in this Portland, Ore.-produced gin in 2018 after trying it and declaring it “best-tasting gin in the world.” What makes it distinctive?

According to its website, it has a “much smoother, easier drinking flavor than typical London Dry gins.” You be the judge.
