8 p.m. on HBO Movie: Downton Abbey Many original cast members from the blockbuster PBS historical drama series returned for this 2019 big-screen sequel, for which “Downton Abbey” creator Julian Fellowes contributed a screenplay that somehow managed to satisfy legions of fans and a majority of film critics as well. The film opens in 1927, as the household staff prepares for a visit by the King and Queen (Simon Jones, Geraldine James). Returning cast members include Hugh Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Maggie Smith, Michelle Dockery, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Brendan Coyle, Joanne Froggatt and Phyllis Logan.

11 p.m. on AMC Line of Duty The acclaimed police drama opens its sophomore season, introducing a new person of interest: Inspector Lindsay Denton (played by Keeley Hawes), who comes under scrutiny after a police convoy escorting a civilian under a witness protection agreement is targeted for a violent attack. Not only did Lindsay organize that operation herself, but she is the lone survivor of that assault, although she claims she only told Deputy Chief Constable Dryden (Mark Bonnar) of the route the convoy was taking.

HBO’s ‘I Know This Much Is True’ a tale of mental illness, family and forgiveness

Dominick Birdsey is a man with a mountain of baggage.

As played by Mark Ruffalo (“The Normal Heart,” “Foxcatcher”) in the HBO limited series “This Much I Know Is True,” a sixepisode drama premiering Sunday, May 10, he’s a house painter in rural Connecticut circa 1990 who is coping with his own psychic wounds as he cares for an identical twin brother with paranoid schizophrenia.

And that malady rears itself in the series’ opening frames, when Thomas (also Ruffalo) hacks off his hand to the horror of onlookers in a public library in what in his mind is a sacrifice to stop the Gulf War. He’s soon sent to an asylum, where his brother fights to get him freed.

Dominick isn’t all that well, either. He’s buckling under the weight of PTSD, the result of looking after Thomas, a childhood with an abusive stepfather, memories of losing his infant daughter to SIDS and subsequent divorce from Dessa (Kathryn Hahn, “Transparent”) and making sure his dying mother (Melissa Leo, “Frozen River”) has proper hospice care.

As Dominick contends with an asylum social worker (Rosie O’Donnell) to gain his brother’s release, a psychologist (Archie Panjabi, “The Good Wife”) picks up on his considerable emotional pain and realizes she may have two patients instead of one.

For the dual roles, Ruffalo undertook unusual demands. First, he shot all his scenes as the svelte, goateed Dominick, then took five weeks off to gain 30 pounds to play the doughy, clean-shaven Thomas. It was also during this time that the 52-year-old actor

researched mental illness and imagined himself as someone with Thomas’ condition.

“When we were talking about how we would do it,” Ruffalo explained to a recent gathering of journalists in Pasadena, Calif., “we didn’t want it to be like I run and put a wig on, and then run and do the same scene on the same day. So, yeah, we took five weeks off to really separate these two guys.

“And Thomas was on a lot of medication,” he continues. “He needs medications. These mood stabilizers and antipsychotics cause people to put on weight. And, yeah ... their life experiences after their teens are so extremely different. But it was important for us to really, really have these guys be two different people.”

And each came with its own distinct challenges, Ruffalo says, but Thomas’ were especially daunting.

“Actually putting on the weight for Thomas was really challenging,” he says. “I didn’t expect it to be. I thought I was going to be having a fun time doing that. And when you’re forcefeeding yourself, some of the romance of food sort of leaves.

“I mean, listen, there’s an element of mental illness in this project,” he continues. “And you want to be as honest as you can to that, especially today. And it means a lot to me to be honest with that, which means going into that world and getting to know it and getting comfortable with it. And that’s challenging.

“And so, that aspect of it was challenging more so than Dominick. I was really afraid to play it to be honest with you. I think it’s really an important issue and I want to tell it as honestly as possible. And so the responsibility that was on the actual playing it was really apparent to me.”

Another producer of “The Asian Americans,” Oscar-nominated filmmaker Renee Tajima-Pena (“Who Killed Vincent Chin?”) believes the program asks a key question: “Given that we’re living in a time of diversity and division, how are we all as Americans going to move forward together?

That’s really the story of the series – Asian Americans, what role have we played? I grew up thinking, ‘We’re always kind of on the margins. We’re always on the outside.’ But doing the series blew my mind. I mean, we’ve been at the center of the story for the longest time.”

The title “The Asian Americans” makes it clear which history a new PBS miniseries provides.

Airing Monday and Tuesday, May 11 and 12 (check local listings), the five-episode documentary – narrated by Tamlyn Tomita and Daniel Dae Kim, also associated lately on ABC’s “The Good Doctor” – logically begins with the U.S. arrival of immigrants from such regions as China, Japan and the Philippines. While seeking equality in their new homeland, they and their descendants grapple with straddling dual heritages through World War II, the Cold War and later social turbulence.

“My father’s family was interned at the Manzanar Japanese American imprisonment camp, so I have that direct personal connection,” Tomita says. “Knowing that my family was involved in the redress and reparations discussion during the 1980s is present in my family history.” The actress notes that narrating “The Asian Americans” required her “to take a little breath and be as objective as possible, and to relate the stories to persons who are not of Asian descent, to (let them) know that this is a completely American story.”

Embodying the Man of Steel was Cain’s mission during the four seasons of “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman,” in which he and Teri Hatcher had the title roles. After that, he launched his own production company through which he made and hosted an updated version of “Ripley’s Believe It or Not!,” and he also has revisited the Superman franchise with guest roles on “Smallville” and “Supergirl.”

“The Division,” “Hope & Faith,” “Clubhouse,” “Las Vegas” and “Hit the Floor” are among series on which Cain has had regular or recurring roles in his post-“Superman” years. Since 2014, he has been the host of The CW’s series “Masters of Illusion,” which returns for its 10th season Friday, May 15 – and he has served as a jack-of-all-trades for that network as well, often hosting special events such as the annual Hollywood Christmas Parade. His many movies include the Denzel Washingtonstarring “Out of Time.”

Dean George Cain was born on July 31, 1966, in Mount Clemens, Mich.

He never met his biological father, but his mother – actress Sharon Thomas – moved him and his brother Roger to Los Angeles. There, she married filmmaker Christopher Cain, who adopted her sons and relocated the family to Malibu.

Cain was a high-school athlete, and Charlie Sheen and brothers Rob and Chad Lowe were among his classmates.

He then went to Princeton University and set an interception record on its football team ... and during his time there, he dated Brooke Shields. In graduating, he did his thesis on the history of the Motion Picture Academy.

A football career seemed to be Cain’s destination after his schooling, but a knee injury cut his time with the Buffalo Bills short. He then took up screenwriting and acting, landing an especially notable guest role on “Beverly Hills, 90210” as Rick – or, as Peach Pit owner Nat (Joe E. Tata) called him, “Reek” – an appealing fellow Brenda (Shannen Doherty) met during a summer in Paris.

How would you describe the overall theme of “Council of Dads”?

How much does your depiction of Phyllis Schafly in “Mrs. America” take dramatic license?

We’re reflecting the modern family, the contrary family, where it’s not about blood. It’s about love and the people that show up every day and the people that are probably closer to you than some of your immediate family. I have some of my family that I don’t see all year.

I’ve got my Uncle Steve, who’s not my uncle. He’s my stepdad’s best friend. I was raised by a man who took me on eight years into my life because someone didn’t want to stick around. And we’re just reflecting that “family” has changed, and I don’t think it’s really been seen on TV before in this way. And I could not not be a part of it.

How did you first become aware of “Council of Dads”?

And I said, “I’ll deal with it when I get back.” And I got home, and it was pouring rain; I got an Uber home. And I sat down at my computer straight away, and I got to page 21 and I was crying my eyes out, for many reasons that I won’t go into now. But I rang my manager and I said, “I’m taking this meeting. I really want to meet these people.” You know when you’re meant to go into those meetings and kind of say, “Why should I want to be in this show?,” and I just couldn’t. I wanted to be in it from page 21. It was so moving.

Even if you’re in (Steven) Spielberg’s “Lincoln,” there’s a lot of invention there. You’ve got the letters, you’ve got the actual facts of what took place ... but what went on behind the scenes, you have to invent. At a certain point, you have to go where the character fits into the story, because you are describing a particular movement in time.

I don’t believe in demonizing anybody, and (despite) my agreement or disagreement or my personal political persuasions, I couldn’t be less interested in folding into a character. The way you create ambiguity and juxtaposition in a character is to simply butt two very contradictory thoughts or actions together, and then present it to an audience. We are all full of contradictions and hypocrisies. No one is perfect, including Phyllis – although her hair was mostly always perfect. But it is a challenge, I think, when you are playing a figure who is so polarizing.

What do you think Schlafly’s ultimate contribution to equal rights in America was?

Phyllis and her army really did bring together a whole disparate section of the religious community.

She brought the Baptists together with the Evangelicals, with the Catholics and Anglicans and the Conservative Jewish community. And she united them around the issue of the Equal Rights Amendment, and what it would mean to what she saw as a breakdown of the American family.

She saw that the Bible describes the virtuous woman, and she truly believed that women were stronger than men and then actually held the fabric of American society by holding the household together. And then, further from that, she brought them together what was to become the pro-life plank.

Had you read Sally Rooney’s book prior to auditioning for “Normal People”?

Do you have any favorite love stories? Are you a romantic?

Yes. I’m a massive romantic. I mean, yeah one of my favorite love stories is

actually “Romeo and Juliet.” I mean, the Baz Luhrmann film is out of this world and I was a massive fan of that. And I’ve always been a massive romantic.

Those are the kind of stories that I’m most interested in. I love love. I love how meeting somebody that’s so unique to you – you can meet five, 10 different people, spend three years with them and not change and have one conversation with someone and be completely different just because of a kind of intangible kind of access that they give you into who you are. So, I just I love love stories and yeah, to be able to be part of one that’s 17 so special like this, it was amazing.

I hadn’t. I got my first audition and I’d heard of the book. I’d had a few friends who were like, “This is the best thing you will ever read. You have to read it.”

And I didn’t get a chance to. But I got my first audition through, and I loved the character just from the script alone.

It was the scene that I had to do was the first time they meet where she’s eating chocolate spread. It had some sort of chocolate spread involved, and then the second one was where they have their

first kiss, and I just knew from the writing that she was already so complex in the kind of few small bits of sort of dialogue I got. And then when I got my recall with Paul (Mescal, her co-star) I read the book, and I was, yeah, I think I’m very glad that I hadn’t read it before, because I would have had an immense amount of pressure on myself, because I just I loved it so much ... .

However, CBS hadn’t reckoned with what is likely the biggest twist in “Survivor” history: a global pandemic, making it impossible to deliver a traditional finale while following “social distancing” protocols. At press time, host and executive producer Jeff Probst says the production team is still weighing its options, but presumably he will connect remotely to cast members in their homes.

Ramsay brings a town back from the brink in ‘24 Hours to Hell and Back: Save Our Town’ Earlier this year, Gordon Ramsay undertook what would be one of the most ambitious, difficult and ultimately rewarding projects of his career – helping rebuild businesses in a flood-ravaged suburban Baltimore town. His efforts are detailed in an upcoming special episode of “Gordon Ramsay’s 24 Hours to Hell and Back.”

Titled “Save Our Town,” the two-hour installment airing Tuesday, May 12, on Fox, follows Ramsay as he and his crew of restaurant employees, celebrities including Orioles star Cal Ripken Jr. and designer Nate Berkus (“Nate & Jeremiah by Design”) and local citizens work to rescue three business devastated by floods that hit Ellicott City, Md., in 2016 and 2018.

Unlike other “24 Hours” episodes where Ramsay delivers tough love to apathetic restaurateurs, this has a different tone. These business owners had their lives and livelihoods sent over the cliff through no fault of their own, and it became the mission of Ramsay, who learned of their plight when he was opening his own eatery in Baltimore in 2017, to throw them a lifeline.

“Dealing with one crisis is hard enough but dealing with two crises within 18 months/two years of each other, it’s pretty shocking ...,” Ramsay says. “This ... wasn’t just about saving the restaurants; it was about saving a town, saving a community and giving them the confidence and the position and support and everything I know in this industry to help make them work with the help of some very special people.”

In a town full of wrecked businesses, Ramsay focused on three that were in especially dire need: Little Market Cafe; Jaxon Edwin, a combination hair salon, coffee bar and game room; and the Phoenix

Brewing Company, which was actually a merger between two other breweries. In all cases, Ramsay and his crew helped rebuild not only the brick-and-mortar facilities but also revamped menus, redesigned dining areas and offered business advice.

For Ramsay, it was all about giving the locals hope and the sight of one of the celebrity helpers, local hero and Baseball Hall of Famer Ripken, was especially inspiring.

“You know, the first time I phoned him and said, ‘Hey look ...’ I didn’t even finish the sentence,” Ramsay says, “and he said, ‘Gordon, I’m in. What are we to do? Fix a bar? Paint a wall? Spend time in the kitchen? What do you want me to do?’ And so Cal couldn’t be any more pleasant to work with, an absolute dream come true. ... But lighting up that room and giving hope to the staff and showing that kind of support for the community was unimaginable. And he delivered on all fronts.”

In the end, businesses and lives were fixed and a downtown district got a big assist on its way to recovery. Ramsay’s love of the Baltimore area and its people spurred him to action and he came away heartened by the results.

“For me, (it’s) one of the most passionate projects I’ve ever done, 10 out of (a scale of ) 10,” he says. “In terms of hardest, 11 out of 10. But deep down inside ... it’s been one of the most rewarding because it’s been one of the most serious things I’ve ever done in my entire cooking career because I strongly believe we’ve helped switch the lights on back in that town again.”
