Four misfits find purpose and one another in AMC’s surreal ‘Dispatches From Elsewhere’

Viewers who know Jason Segel from his comedic work in “How I Met Your Mother” or “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” will find him in unfamiliar and somewhat otherworldly territory in an anthology series debuting this week on AMC. In “Dispatches From Elsewhere,” a 10-hour series premiering Sunday, March 1, Segel stars as Peter, a 40-ish Philadelphian feeling like something is missing from his uber-mundane life. Answering an ad on a flier, he’s summoned to the mysterious Jejune Institute, where he encounters its imperious founder, Octavio (Richard E. Grant, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”), who exhorts to Peter that he is indeed special and destined for more. Moved to tears, Peter buys in wholeheartedly and soon meets other unfulfilled souls.

Among them are Simone (Eve Lindley, “Outsiders”), a trans woman with a fear of intimacy and feelings of not belonging; Fredwynne (Andre Benjamin, “Jimi: All Is by My Side”), a man of great obsessions; and Janice (Sally Field, “Forrest Gump”), an older woman feeling lost following her husband’s death. All are seeking direction in life and all have a belief in “the magic.”

The story is the brainchild of Segel, who based it on an actual social experiment that took place in San Francisco a decade ago, in which, among other activities, participants searched for a missing fictional girl. In “Dispatches,” that girl’s name is Clara.

“My starting point was: Who pulls a flier and why?” Segel explains. “And I was really interested in picking four

versions of isolation, feeling separate, feeling like ‘the other,’ and slowly bringing them together until we realize that we’re all the same. And so that’s where I came up with these four characters. And at that point, I knew how to write a love story. It’s something I’m good at.”

The first four episodes are dedicated to each of the characters, with the opener, “Peter,” introducing him to viewers and eventually Simone, with whom a mutual attraction quickly develops. Lindley, a trans actress, had never before seen a trans character portrayed as a love interest and so was intrigued by that storyline and what she considered a well-rounded character.

“I was so, like, moved by the fact that it was one of the best depictions of a trans character that I had ever read,” she says. “She felt so close to me and I felt like I knew her and I felt like I could tell her story. And it was really great because Jason allowed me to interject a lot of myself into her, and you know, we really worked together to bring her to life, I think.”

Another character in the story is the city of Philadelphia, which Segel says he chose for its juxtaposition of urban beauty and grit.

“Philly stood out because the show was about finding the beauty in unexpected places,” he says. “... But it also has more murals than any other city in the country. It’s one of the most art-laden cities that I’ve ever been to and it felt like the exact metaphor of our show. The beauty is just all around you, down every alleyway but you walk by it every day.”

One of FX’s earliest efforts at a documentary series may not seem that far a cry from many of its dramatic shows.

Based on Gary L. Stewart’s bestseller (written with Susan Mustafa), “The Most Dangerous Animal of All� – which premieres with the first two of its four episodes Friday, March 6 – incorporates dramatic re-creations as Stewart searches for the father who abandoned him, only to learn information that shakes him to his core: The man may be the notorious and extremely elusive Zodiac serial killer who terrorized San Francisco in the late 1960s. “I met Gary because I read the book,� executive producer Ross M. Dinerstein reports. “I knew it was available, and I read it, and I couldn’t put it down. I felt there was definitely more to the story, so I found myself on the phone with Gary about two days later, and we had about an hour conversation. I said, ‘Look. I need to come meet you. I’m going to come to Baton Rouge and have lunch with you.’ “I spent the day with him and really got to know him as an individual,� adds Dinerstein. “I really wanted to get an understanding of what motivated him to write this book and what motivated him to go down this rabbit hole. In 2010 came the role with which Moynahan arguably is most identified: New York prosecutor Erin Reagan, a member of a family steeped in upholding law and order, on the CBS drama series “Blue Bloods.”

Kathryn Bridget Moynahan was born on April 28, 1971, in Binghamton, N.Y. She was raised largely in Longmeadow, Mass., where she, her parents and het two brothers moved when she was young.

Moynahan began a modeling career when she accompanied a friend who was aiming to be signed – but instead, Moynahan was. She posed for catalogs while attending the University of Massachusetts Amherst, then continued that pursuit upon moving to New York. Believing she had only a certain shelf life on that career, she started to investigate a move into acting.

Commercials were Moynahan’s first ventures in performing, and not very long afterward, her first major television part was as Mr. Big’s wife (and eventual ex-wife) Natasha on “Sex and the City.”

Moynahan’s movie work began in earnest with “Coyote Ugly,” and its box-office success brought her more film roles soon afterward. “Serendipity,” “The Sum of All Fears,” “The Recruit,” and “I, Robot” all have become cable staples.

This two-hour “Women Tell All” special episode, however — a staple in every season of this show — often is an exception to that rule, since it provides a forum to the candidates already eliminated

by Peter Weber, this season’s Bachelor. You can bet some may have strong opinions about how things went for them.

You ran the Boston Marathon last year.

Do you find there are any similarities between that and racing in NASCAR’s Cup Series?

Though you’ve had success as rapper Lil Dicky, the version of yourself that you play in “Dave” is struggling to establish his music career. How do you reconcile those aspects for yourself?

Surprisingly, there is. You know, when you look at the duration of the Marathon, it’s very similar to the duration in the car. Certainly, the Marathon is more physically demanding but nutrition and hydration, those rules apply to both the car and running on foot. The commitment physically and mentally is very similar. I mean, you’re uncomfortable all the time in both spaces, so I think that’s why I’ve been drawn to these endurance events, is that they are so familiar to the things I do in a race car.

I certainly try to base the character in the show a lot on what I’m like as a real human being. That being said, there’s oftentimes moments where you want to hyperbolize something for the sake of comedy just to maybe get a laugh in a situation.

But I certainly try to, at all times throughout the show, convey my personality.

I graduated college and I started rapping, with the intention of being noticed for being funny and creating a TV show one day. And what happened was ... it really works like a sport. The more I rapped, the better and better I got at rapping, to the point where I became an actual rapper and I toured the world and made hits. It’s really funny, and it’s awesome.

Was the Boston Marathon the first time you ran 26 miles?

Since you’re known mainly as Dave Burd in the show, do you have a different feeling about being referred to as “Lil Dicky” now?

Does this being your last full year running Cup seem real yet?

I love rapping, and I think I’m going to keep rapping as long as I can. It’s obviously a young man’s game – but Lil Dicky, to me, is one thing that I do. And it’s probably the most important thing I’ve ever done in my life to date.

You know, as we get closer to the start of the season and knowing that it’s my last full-time (season), there’s excitement. There’s not anything negative but there’s just the realization of it being my last time chasing the eighth (Cup title). You know, there is something in there that is sad, and again it’s not negative but it’s just like, alright, I guess this is my last shot at it.

But when I’m at home grilling chicken, it’s not Lil Dicky. I’m not rapping as I grill the chicken; I’m just a normal guy, so I just kind of wanted people to see the guy behind the guy that they see. It’s not that I hate Lil Dicky or that I don’t like rapping. It’s just that I think there’s more to me than what you see in a music video. And I hope that people enjoy that person.

How do you feel about the theme of gentrification in “High Fidelity” and how is it woven into your performance?

A lot of people would hate to see record stores become like video stores and just disappear. Did you love record stores before this began and do you like them now?

And the same with video stores too.

There’s a community aspect to it that I really do miss. I think that was why I was so attracted to this thing. It’s interesting being basically the last generation to remember that. You talk to someone younger than me and they don’t even remember going to – they don’t even know what a Blockbuster is 17 and that’s crazy.

I love record stores. I’ve always loved record stores, just music in stores in general. I used to go to Virgin Records, Tower Records. When a new album came out, you’d wait in line and you’d go stand and you’d go talk to people, you’d go listen to things.

And it was a way to connect with people, and you had to physically go get something if you wanted it. And you’d have something to physically take home and you’d read the lyrics, you’d sit in your room.

I mean, I’ve lived in New York for a long time and I’ve seen a lot of neighborhoods change. So I think in terms of creating (her character) Rob and her environment, I just kind of drew upon my own experience. And it’s funny because it’s so easy to say that everyone else is the problem, but she’s also probably new to that neighborhood-ish. You know what I mean? That record store is kind

of a hipster thing to do. So it’s an interesting scenario.

Yes, first full marathon and it worked out because it’s held on a Monday and the carracing schedule, we had the Sunday before off so I could somewhat recover, get hydrated and then also travel to Boston for the race.

But yeah, that was my first full (marathon). I’ve run plenty of halves. I’ve also done a half Ironman, which had a half-marathon run in it but yeah, that was my first full-distance marathon.

Imagine cooking for hungry Las Vegas diners ready to pay top dollar for your first-class creations, all in front of TV cameras and lights. Those are the challenges and pressure faced by contestants on Food Network’s latest competition series “Vegas Chef Prizefight.”

Premiering Thursday, March 5, the six-episode series tasks eight elite chefs of disparate backgrounds and culinary viewpoints with arguably the toughest job interview they’ll ever face, doing dinner service at different restaurants in the Caesars Entertainment realm to prove they have the talent, leadership and determination to run a high-profile restaurant in Las Vegas, one of the world’s greatest foodie cities.

The winner – as determined by host Anne Burrell, chef Scott Conant, Caesars Entertainment executive Eileen Moore and rotating guest judges – lands a job as head chef at the newly created $10 million restaurant at the Flamingo on the famed Strip.

“This is a dream job for somebody,” Burrell explains, “I mean, a brand new restaurant, you get to be a part of it from the beginning. ... I don’t know but I think (this is) one of the biggest stakes that Food Network has ever put on a show like this.”

“They’re going to be really involved in making the menu,” she continues, “and they will have some input

on what the design of the restaurant looks like. I mean, they are really in it. It’s a big job.”

And to do a job like this means having a diverse skillset. In addition to being a talented chef and expert handler of pressure, the successful candidate needs to be good teacher, a good listener and a good cheerleader.

They also need to know when to deliver a pat on the back or kick in the backside when needed, just as any good manager does.

To demonstrate that, they’ll do live dinner service at such varied Sin City eateries as Mr. Chow, BLT Steak at Bally’s, El Burro Borracho at Rio and Giada at The Cromwell. In each instance, Burrell says diners were well aware they were part of a Food Network production.

And while Burrell was reluctant to give hints on challenges or the outcome, she does allow that nerves did play a part at first but dropped away as the competition progressed.

“It was really nice to see, after we got a couple of weeks into the process, people really start to be comfortable and showing us what they can do as cooks,” she says. “You know, once you get past all the nerves, once you peel all of the noise away around the whole process and people really settle in and put their heads down, it got really exciting.”

When the temperature drops, many of us tend to turn to foods that warm us up from the inside out. J’s Place (2681 Calloway Drive) specializes in comfort food and as a part of their Thursday special, their chicken and dumplings take the crown during the cold season. Juicy chunks of chicken, “pillow-like� dumplings and veggies swim around in a steaming bowl of broth. It’s a satisfyingly filling meal, even without the two sides that come with it.

The pot roast at Spencer’s Cafe (7800 McNair Lane, 3401 Mall View Road and 10437 Rosedale Highway) comes with a choice of two sides, mashed potatoes and chili beans being two of them. Spencer’s pot roast was easy to cut through and a filling dish. The gravy and sauteed mushrooms smothered on top give the roast an even more comforting and savory flavor.

Going down the list of entrees at Milt’s Coffee Shop (6112 Knudsen Drive), it’s hard to pass on an item listed as the “Best Fried Chicken Ever!!� Battered and fried in a skillet, the breast, wing, leg and thigh that make up the entree come out hot and crispy with a side of mashed potatoes and steamed carrots. Make sure napkins are at the ready because the crunchy exterior gives away to an unbelievably juicy interior with each bite. It’s a dish that lives up to its name.

Poke is one of those foods that you have to try. It’s deconstructed sushi in a bowl, so what more can you want? Salt Water Poke (3615 Coffee Road, #400) serves poke bowls and acai bowls.

You can either order a large or a small bowl for your poke. This bowl had a brown rice base with tuna, crab and shrimp as the protein, topped with corn, fried garlic, avocados, eggs, edamame,

cucumbers and dried seaweed. On top of all of that, it was drizzled with spicy mayo and eel sauce. With every bite, you’re able to taste the crunchiness of the fried garlic, the saltiness of the seaweed and the sweetness of the eel sauce. At Salt Water Poke, it’s hard not to leave with a smile on your face thinking about when your next visit might be.
