9 p.m. on HBO Westworld Last season, many critics and viewers alike detected a sophomore slump in this high-concept sci-fi thriller, as each episode often seemed more confounding than the one before. Happily, Season 3 has marked a welcome course correction, as the story follows the AI character Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) away from the titular park and into the wider world. There, a construction worker named Caleb (new series regular Aaron Paul) is teaching her that humans are less two-dimensional than she thought. The season ends tonight in a finale called “Crisis Theory.”

‘Billions’ Season 5 lets Maggie Siff cash in

“Billions” begins its fifth season Sunday on Showtime.

“Billions” is about to give Maggie Siff a considerable payoff.

The Showtime drama about money and power has challenged the actress’ character – psychiatrist and performance coach Wendy Rhoades – in recent years, almost sending her to prison over an investment gone way wrong, then exposing her spicy after-hours life to her great mortification. However, Wendy reclaims her personal power as “Billions” starts its fifth season Sunday, May 3.

Not only does she have to unite the warring camps of reunited hedge-fund rivals Bobby “Axe” Axelrod and Taylor Mason (Damian Lewis, Asia Kate Dillon), she makes a decision about her ruptured marriage to New York Attorney General Chuck Rhoades Jr. (Paul Giamatti). Around that, risky alliances and potential betrayals are off the chart, even by “Billions” standards.

“I think this is the season where she puts herself back together again in a way that feels good to her, morally, emotionally and maybe even spiritually,” Siff says of Wendy. “She’s determined that she really needs to make a life without Chuck at the center of it, and also that her (business) life at AxeCap is determined by her deeper motivations. We see her on a good path.”

With Julianna Margulies (“The Good Wife”), Corey Stoll (“House of Cards”) and Roma Maffia (“Disclosure”) as Season 5 additions, Siff embraces “Billions” newcomers: “Because we shoot in New York, we have amazing access to all of these incredible actors. It’s always like a breath of fresh air, and it inspires us to show up each day with everything we have.”

“Sons of Anarchy” alum Siff meets often with “Billions” creators and executive producers Brian Koppelman and David Levien to get, and sometimes give, a sense of where Wendy is going: “As the actress, you start thinking, ‘Am I supposed to be real here, or am I supposed to be double- or triple-crossing somebody? What do I need to know in order to play this right?”’

“Billions” will take a break after seven episodes, since as with many series, the coronavirus pandemic shut down production. The plan is to finish and televise the rest of Season 5 later this year, though Siff admits picking up right where the filming left off might feel unusual.

“I think the show has always reflected the times interestingly,” she reasons. “After (the 2016 election), I felt like there was a bit of a question about how people would feel about watching a show about billionaires, now that there was a billionaire in the White House. In subtle ways, Brian and Dave have been very smart about how the themes (of ‘Billions’) have adapted to the times, and I’m sure they will continue to be incredibly sensitive to that.”

Many U.S. presidents get an “American Experience” profile – and now, it’s George W. Bush’s turn.

The 43rd chief executive and historychanging events of his two terms are recalled by some who witnessed his handling of them close-up in a new PBS documentary airing Monday and Tuesday, May 5 and 6 (check local listings). The project is split into distinct halves: President Bush’s life and White House tenure before and on the day of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and his actions following that, not only encompassing the war in Iraq but also Hurricane Katrina and financial turrmoil.

Produced and directed by Barak Goodman (who also wrote the program) and Jamila Ephron, “American Experience: George W. Bush” includes observations from two people literally by Bush’s side during 9/11, Andrew Card – the then-chief of staff who whispered news of the attacks to Bush during an appearance at a Florida school – and Ari Fleischer, then White House press secretary .

“What’s interesting about President Bush,” Ephron says, “is that the American people kind of saw him grow into the role of president. For the first 40 years of his life, no one saw this as a possibility for him, and I think that had a lot to do with making him a more relatable human being to the average American.” Adds Goodman, “We try to eliminate some of the fallacies around (his) decisions and get into the context of the time and place where the decisions were made, and to see the man operating under

Melissa Ann McCarthy was born on Aug. 26, 1970, in Plainfield, Ill. Her cousins include actress-model Jenny McCarthy and former pro basketball player Joanne McCarthy.

McCarthy embarked on her entertainment career by doing stand-up comedy in Los Angeles, were she was a member of the noted humor troupe The Groundlings, then in New York. A guest role on her cousin’s sitcom “Jenny” launched her television work, and she also had parts in such movies as “Go,” “Charlie’s Angels” and “The Life of David Gale.”

In 2000, McCarthy landed a regular TV gig as Sookie on “Gilmore Girls,” which lasted seven seasons in its original run. After that ended, she moved into a co-starring role on the sitcom “Samantha Who?” and also turned up in more movies including “The Nines,” “The Back-Up Plan” and “Life As We Know It.” The comedy series “Mike & Molly” elevated McCarthy to home-screen stardom for six seasons starting in 2010, and the year after that, she landed a best supporting actress Oscar nomination for her bawdy performance in the movie “Bridesmaids.” She continued to make films during her “Mike & Molly” hiatus periods, “This Is 40,” “Knocked Up,” “Identity Thief,” “The Heat,” “Tammy,” “St. Vincent,” “Spy” and “The Boss” among them.

After appearing in a female-centric remake of “Ghostbusters,” McCarthy was nominated for an Oscar for best actress for “Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” which dramatized the true story of celebrity biographer Lee Israel. She also earned acclaim for guest stints as then-White House press secretary Sean Spicer on “Saturday Night Live.”

Currently, McCarthy is back on television as the host of NBC’s “Little Big Shots,” having succeeded Steve Harvey in showcasing uniquely gifted youngsters. A new aspect of the show sees McCarthy getting involved directly in the kids’ activities.

McCarthy is married to fellow Groundlings alum Ben Falcone, who has written and/or directed several of her movies. They also run the company On the Day Productions, and they have two daughters. An owner of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, McCarthy launched the clothing line Melissa McCarthy Seven7 for plus-sized women.

Why do you think “Man With a Plan,” now in Season 4, has been an ongoing success for you?

OF ‘EXPEDITION WITH STEVE BACKSHALL’ ON PBS

As “Expedition With Steve Backshall” returns to resume its season, your trek through subterranean Mexican caves ultimately places you in peril – something you’re used to in your adventures. How much does your adrenaline level rise at such times?

My job is to make the best show I can make. In the beginning, I try to surround with the most talented people who are foolish enough to work with me – and once they say, “Cut!,” it’s kind of out of our hands.

Weird as it may seem, the adrenaline side of this is almost incidental. The thing that drove the project was the sense of genuine exploration that we had as a potential possibility in all the environments we were going to.

Though the show has performed reliably enough to get to this point, do you concern yourself with ratings?

The things that I have an effect on are when we’re on the stage ... if we can tweak a joke, or take a longer pause, or change the blocking to put me closer to another character where it might be funnier. I’ve been doing this long enough to have a sense of what I think works or doesn’t work.

And we’ve had (director) Jimmy Burrows to help us. He’s pretty special.

I would far rather have gotten through this series without nearly dying several times over, but inevitably, it’s going to become a focus because those are heart-stopping moments. I think people can see it’s real. It’s genuine. This is really what happened to us.

I was shooting that while we were shooting “Friends,” so I was flying back and forth. We would shoot the show on Friday nights, then I would take the red-eye to London – and arrive Saturday night, with the time difference – and I would shoot the movie from Sunday until lunch on Wednesday, then get on the Concorde and fly to New York, then switch planes and fly to L.A.

Absolutely. Yes. We had another couple of expeditions that we had planned for this project that had to be pulled at the last stage because the political situation just became too dangerous, and that isn’t a part of our agreement. We’re not a series that is in any way about coming into a kind of contact with anything that could be dangerous to us from a human perspective.

I’d learn the week’s “Friends” episode on the plane, then show up on Thursday, shoot the show on Friday and get back on the plane to London. I did that for six weeks, then when we wrapped the season on “Friends,” I went back to London and I was there for the whole summer break. And we wrapped the movie one day before the next season of “Friends” started. I was tired!

Our team has people who are absolute experts in working in remote environments, and I think as much as anything, it’s very important that we work alongside local people that become a part of our teams – and that we never do anything that’s pushing the boundaries, particularly when it comes to political situations.

What is it about “Defending Jacob” that really impressed you and made you want to do it?

As someone who is single and childless, what is it like to imagine yourself as the parent of a 16-year-old?

I actually loved it. It was the first time I’ve been able to play a parent and, I don’t know, I loved it. I think there’s a whole – there’s body language there, there’s postures,

there’s so many things – at least I drew from my own childhood of what a dad looks and feels like.

I really, really, really enjoyed it, actually, because it really does lend itself to the complexity and depth of the film. Being a parent, I would imagine, unlocks depths of love that you didn’t know you were capable of. And I think that only raises the stakes and makes things more interesting. So for me, it was a fun place to start off that kind of blinding love at times and how far you would go to keep it pure.

I can be capricious at times, so I take my time. And it was a project that I had read while I was working on something in New York and I just kind of kept coming back to it. It’s the type of thing that ... you know, those projects that stick in your head for some reason. And my meetings with (executive producers) Morten (Tyldum) and Mark (Bomback) were always so fantastic. Every time I left

one of those meetings, I was more encouraged, more excited. And eventually, it just kind of felt like I had to do it.

How to make delicious meals from the basics on ‘Quarantine Cooking Show’ At a time when supplies of some foods are limited and supermarket shelves are bare, being resourceful with what’s in the pantry becomes paramount. And with that, Mary Beth Albright can help.

In her “Quarantine Cooking Show,” which streams in The Washington Post website’s food section, the Post’s food editor and one-time “Food Network Star” contestant offers tips and recipes using common nonperishable items that many people already have in-house. In quick three- to five-minute videos, she shows how to make such comestibles as roasted canned tomatoes, coconut rice, salami chips and salmon cakes.

In all cases, these are simple, inexpensive meals that anyone can make, and Albright argues it’s not unlike how people ate when eating food made outside the home was a rarity.

“I think honestly that ... this is the way that humanity has cooked for most of our existence,” she says. “It’s like, what do we have around, and how are we going to make something that’s going to be nourishing and delicious out of it? I think in a way it’s like, ‘Oh, OK, here’s the next wave of cooking’ things that are going to happen. In a way, it’s going back to the way things have always been.

(It’s) efficient and scrappy.”

Albright is somewhat of an authority in the areas of quarantining and food, given her background in emergency preparedness, law, public health and the Surgeon General’s Office (she worked for the

legendary Dr. C. Everett Koop), and her passion for food issues and cooking. In this challenging time, she wanted to produce something that would enhance people’s well-being, show them how to mitigate risk and give them information on how to take care of themselves through food.

Which is why one of her early “Quarantine” episodes walks through the 10 foods to stock up on in case you’re locked down.

“It’s really stuff that one might have on hand or might be able to find,” she says. “Like, I’m not going to do anything with like ... a steak because I don’t know if people can find that right now.

“I don’t start off with something that I necessarily have in the house – and I have a lot of stuff in the house when (I) make food videos. That just happens,” she says with a laugh. “But I do try to go for the things that I think will be on shelves.

You can buy 10 cans of canned salmon right now and just keep them around and make these salmon cakes.”

And if you need something with which to wash that down, Albright might suggest her quarantini, which she explains in her video is equal parts gin, applejack and lillet blanc wine – which, she explains, “is a fortified wine, so it’s actually got a higher alcohol content ... and it’s delicious. You could absolutely just use regular wine instead of it, but I just like the sort of floralness it gives to the drink. It’s more aromatic.”
