A FRESH ALTERNATIVE FOR SHOPPERS With the focus for many families shifting to how to keep costs down whilst still providing the best quality food and wellbeing for their family, many families are starting to look to the local fruiters for better value fruit and veg.
that’s because we’re a family orientated, family run business. We know that quality and freshness are important ingredients in promoting your health, so our produce is guaranteed first class” Says Vince from Rode Fresh
So this month we went down to speak to one of those local fruiterers to find out his thoughts on the state of the market and how he provides the best quality for his shoppers.
With Vince’s day starting at 3.30 in the morning he ensures that freshness is delivered everyday to his customers
“Here at Rode Fresh we know all about Fruit & Veg and the way that contributes to a healthy lifestyle,
“Buying daily from the Rocklea markets and also sourcing fresh produce from our local growers we ensure our quality of produce is streaks ahead of the
supermarkets because its chosen by experienced buyers and we always ensure we try before we buy” Says Vince Vince believes that shoppers are not as aware of the local independent’s value because of the domination and advertising hype of the big supermarket chains. That’s why Rode Fresh has joined with Less2Pay. com.au and is working together to inform shoppers of their value, such as giving away a $25 fuel voucher every month to one of his customers. Be Smart With Your Shopping Cart
Evaluate your shopping choices carefully. For example, a good place to start is laundry detergent. A detergent like Tide may not be the least expensive product on the shelf, but because the next leading detergent can contain up to 80 percent water, you may end up having to use two or three capfuls to get your clothes clean -- and that isn’t a bargain. It is a good reminder to look at a product’s overall value if you really want to shop smart.

5 Steps to Become Depressed & Unhealthy It’s easy if you try. The facts are in and one thing is for certain – Australians are not happy. In truth, we are extremely depressed. At first glance, you would assume it was the struggling Real Estate market, the shrinking Dollar, the war in Iraq, and the war on the Australian Stock Exchange. Yet other countries with far more to worry about than we do, do not report anywhere near our levels of mental and emotional disorders. For example, the percentage of people with clinical levels of anxiety, depression, etc. in Australia is 7 times that of those in Nigeria!
well be taking a placebo, according to the first study to include unpublished evidence.” “The new generations of Antidepressant drugs work no better than a placebo for the majority of patients with mild or even severe depression, comprehensive research of clinical trials has found.” “American and British experts, led by Professor Kirsch, examined the clinical trials from four commonly used SSRIs, including Fluoxetine (better known as Prozac), Venlafaxine (Efexor) and Paroxetine (Seroxat).”
As the numbers of reported adults and children with mental disorders skyrocketed, the pharmaceutical companies and then Doctors responded with bringing Anti-depressant drugs (SSRIs) to market quickly. According to a recent report, these drugs make up 6 out of the top 10 prescription drugs sold today.
“Given these results there seems little reason to prescribe Antidepressant medication to anyone but the most severely depressed patients, and only when alternative treatments have failed,” Professor Kirsch said. “The difference in improvement between patients taking placebos and patients taking Antidepressants is not very great. This means that depressed people can improve without chemical treatments.”
In recent times, Antidepressants have come under harsh scrutiny for causing suicide and they have been implicated as being behind many of the recent school shootings and big media deaths like Anna Nicole Smith, her son Daniel, Heath Ledger, the pro-wrestler Chris Benoit, and Andrea Yates’ children. This has resulted in SSRIs getting a “Black Box” warning on them and has left thousands of people looking for alternatives to very real emotional pain. Australians want to know, “How can we get happy again.”
Depression is a real case of chicken and the egg, which came first, the brain issue or the life and lifestyle that created the brain issue. Rarely is someone simply born and destined for depression. There are a number of known causes that leave someone that way. Now, science is addressing that by getting to the cause of the problems so people can get well without chemicals. More importantly, people can stay well and stop this scourge of emotional disorders that have become so pervasive in the modern world.
Even more light was shed on the issue of depression in the London Times February 26th, 2008 on the front page in an article titled, “DEPRESSION DRUGS DON’T WORK.”
Like so many other conditions common to western living, Cancer, Heart Disease, Arthritis, Diabetes, and Alzheimer’s, Depression is very much a degenerative illness grown more popular by modern lifestyle.
They stated “Millions of people taking commonly prescribed Antidepressants might as
Multiple areas of modern lifestyle affect
brain chemistry and hormones. Toxins, processed food, nutrient deficient diets, spinal conditions, sedentary lifestyle, and emotional trauma alone and more commonly, combined, all radically affect your body’s physiology and all-around mental health. In fact, if you know anything about overall mental and physical health, the way we live now actually looks like we are trying to be sick and depressed on purpose. FIVE STEPS TO BECOME DEPRESSED AND UNHEALTHY: Step 1: Become toxic. Modern medications, modern foods, and chemically based household products have toxins that remain in the system and destroy hormonal function and alter physiology. Step 2: Do not get see a chiropractor. Allow your neck (cervical spine) to shift forward, lose its normal curve, and degenerate. Make sure the top two vertebrae in the neck stay out of alignment so the area where the spinal cord interacts with the brain completely breaks down and causing diseases related to brain function. Step 3: Eat this way 1. A diet high in carbohydrates so that you can leave a constant level of insulin in the system which lowers serotonin levels and causes inflammation. 2. A diet deficient in Omega 3 and proficient in Omega 6, which Oxford and Harvard have found to be the first factor to address regarding depression. 3. A diet high in grains and sugars and low in vegetables, giving you acid PH levels. 4. Drink a lot of Cokes and lattes. Stimulants, sugars, and artificial additives are great for brain dysfunction.
5. Do not supplement. Rely on processed foods for all your nutrients.
Step 4: Warning, do not exercise! A sedentary lifestyle has many damaging effects to function and mental health. That is why exercise consistently matches or exceeds the benefits of antidepressants in studies.
Step 5: Hate people, don’t forgive, be right all the time, sleep less than 8 hours every night, and if you have been through emotional traumas, by all means, do not get any help from a professional counselor or work with God!
THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A TONGUE IN CHEEK WAY OF POINTING OUT THE OBVIOUS. WE DO A WHOLE LOT WITH OUR LIFESTYLE, BUT IGNORE A WHOLE LOT AS WELL. THAT LEADS TO ALL DISEASE, INCLUDING MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL ONES.
Depression and suicide are extremely tough and sensitive issues. Do not take or get off your medication without consulting a trained doctor first.
Also, however, do not quickly succumb to being the victim of a bad-brain mentality. It is always better to take a pro-active approach first. Take the right steps, not the wrong five steps, away from depression and poor health and you will always improve. There are no side effects but good health. As always, Yours in Optimal Health, Dr Richard Sawyer.

(ARA) – It is often difficult to prepare a nutritious breakfast when your mornings are already short on time. But you may want to think twice before skipping the meal altogether. There’s ample evidence to show that eating a nutritious, balanced breakfast is a must if you’re trying to lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Starting your day with a healthy meal not only improves your stamina and memory during those busy first hours, it also jumpstarts your metabolism for the day, says Bob Greene, an exercise physiologist, personal trainer to Oprah Winfrey and author of “The Best Life Diet.” In fact, several studies have found that breakfast eaters consume fewer calories throughout the course of the day than breakfast skippers. “People often pass on breakfast thinking that it will help cut calories,” Greene says. “Instead, they make up for those calories later on, often in the evening, as they raid the cupboards for chips, cookies and other high-calorie foods. And, if people skip both breakfast and lunch, their metabolism may start slowing down. That’s the last thing you need if you’re trying to shed pounds. If you’re short on time, try a protein smoothie. It provides a refreshing, on-the-go pick-me-up to keep you energized until lunch.” Smoothies are one of the easiest things to whip up at home with a blender and a little creativity. When you begin with a lean protein base like egg whites (about 1/4 to 1/3 cup per smoothie), you’ll have a beverage that will help keep you full and satisfied. Egg whites are an all-natural protein source that is fat-free, cholesterol-free and low in calories, making them ideal for a power breakfast.

Local Legend helps kids hit for 6 Former test cricketer and Queensland captain, Gary Cosier, has started up a new venture looking to help budding cricketers of all levels improve their skills over the internet.
“The great part about this type of coaching is that we can give direct correction and instruction at the end of each session,” Gary explained.
MyCricketCoach.com is a revolution in cricket coaching designed around giving first class tuition to any player, at anytime, anywhere in the world.
Gary can also offer live coaching for those times when participants have access to a video camera and computer at their practice session, perfect for coaching groups in schools and organised teams.
It works by emailing a video of your training session to mycricketcoach.com, which is then reviewed by Gary, providing written, verbal and drawn instruction. The session is then emailed back to the participant, usually within 48 hours.

Gary uses revolutionary technology to give players feedback on the shots allowing him to give drawn and verbal instruction at the same time, to better give understanding to players on correct shot selection and body positioning
“From beginners learning the very basics, to a club cricketer or an advanced player who would like to look at the finer points of their game, this is their chance to learn more and advance their skill levels.” Go to MyCricketCoach.com to see an example of the coaching experience and follow the links to get you on your way to become a legend.

wine guide
Pinot Gris Vs Pinot Grigio In France it’s Pinot Gris and to the Italians its Pinot Grigio so what’s the difference? The grape is one and the same, in Australia it comes down to the winemaker’s preference to which style they produce. Pinot Gris generally has vibrant aromas and a rich palate with texture and spice. Some of the wine spends time in barrel to aid with texture and spice. The Italian version is for the most part neutral to smell and has a leaner palate featuring pear, almonds and a backbone of acid, this wine is mostly unoaked. Here are some examples of both that won’t break the bank balance and are great representations of the varietal.

From celebrities to the catwalk; high distinct cheekbones are all the rage. No need to stress though; the average mere mortal doesn’t need to have Naomi Campbell’s genes to achieve this lusted after trend - all that is needed is a great application of a highlighter.
A highlighter can describe many products from a simple blush to a bronzer, a cream , a tint or even a shimmer. All of these highlighters are great for creating more prominence of the cheekbones, which in turn leads to a slimmer more centred face. Depending on the product and the colour being used a wide variety of looks and be created.

This look is best achieved when just applied on the apples of the cheek. Great cheekbones can complete any outfit; now the only challenge is finding the right colour for you and giving it a go. The Perfect Hairstyle that fits your face
Tired of always having the same hairstyles? It’s time to change your image. Before you go off experimenting, make sure you know which hairstyles best fit your face shape.
The hair is a linchpin for the female image. Hairstyles say a lot about your personality, no one is more aware of this than celebrities who carefully choose the best professionals to define their look. You can do the same. Find out what your traits are and choose your new look.
Square Face
The characteristic of this face type is the wide jaw. The best option is a long open bang to divert the attention. Best are hairstyles with that are not very long but have volume. The volume is your friend. Comb your hair loose, forget the super smooth hairstyles and never collect the hair completely.
Oval Face
You are lucky because every hairstyles suit you. Experiment and change your look. Curly, smooth, very short hairstyles or super long, everything goes.
Hazelnut
You have a marked chin and the lower part of your face is slender then the front. In this case it is ideal for you to choose a haircut with much volume to the chin, to widen the base of the face. You can try without fear layered medium hairstyles to give freedom and movement to your haircut. If your face is long, you must give volume to the hair.
Triangular Face
The best thing for you is to wear a very heavy bang. Ensure that the strength of your haircut focus on the top of your face and cheeks are much more highlighted ( see page 8 for help on highlighting) Dare with a very short hair and nothing structured. You’ll get freshness and a very modern touch. If the short hair is not your

choice, don’t worry; take a long hairstyle but always with great volume. Rectangular Face You need a lot of volume and movement at the top of your head. This powers your cheekbones and shortens the length of your face. Try not to wear very long hair. You have to choose a hairstyle that stylizes your face. Try loose hairstyles with movement. Round Face If you want to refine your factions lead your hair below the shoulders and very smooth, slight layered. The volume must be concentrated in the middle of the face and the sides should be flat. Although the bang is fashionable, you have

Customers demand tasty produce By Alisa Cork
Business partners Danny Olsen and Heath Jakeman have grown up around fruit and vegetable markets and managing a business with a name spanning over 40 years of success in the fruit and vegetable industry is something they are very proud of. “More than half of our clients have dealt with us from the first week we opened at North West Plaza and many have become good friends over the past eight years,” Danny explained. Danny says paying attention to what their customers want is the secret to their success. “We buy our produce with customers in mind and look forward to providing them good quality, tasty fruit and vegetables. Whatever we put into our ship has to be a good product and our customers come back because of that.” The difference with Oboy’s is that the owners are fruiterers. They advise and serve their customers themselves, and aim to source fruit and vegetables that last and are enjoyable to eat – a quality that is becoming rare itself in today’s marketplace of long-term cold storage. Oboy’s are more than happy to provide a very different service to their clientele. They will only stock good quality, fresh and tasty produce, and they specialise in sourcing the ‘classic’ varieties that are becoming increasingly uncommon. One example of this is the Muscat Grape, which is hard to find because of its difficult to handle reputation. Another example is the Queensland Blue Pumpkin, which Danny says people will travel a long way to find. “It gets harder each year to source classic varieties but we do endeavour to keep providing for our clientele because we believe if it tastes good people will eat more,” Danny said. The only complaints they receive are ones from people who say the fruit they bought 24 hours ago is all gone. He is extremely proud of the fact that Oboy’s fruit and vegetables are actually being eaten and enjoyed by children all across the North West Brisbane region. As well as tasty fresh produce, Oboy’s stock a range of continental foods and dairy products. The popular Cooloola Milk produced in the Gympie area is a product people flock to Oboy’s for because is not reconstituted like most other milks. There is also a pasteurised variety which is not commonly available. Oboy’s are very excited to announce the imminent arrival of the new season Galaxy Apple (a cross between a Royal Gala and a Jonathan) and was one of the first shops to originally stock the apple which bears the sweetness of the Gala and tanginess of the Pink Lady varieties. The shop is deceptively large, carrying an enormous array of fruit and vegetable varieties. It is a family friendly store, providing easy parking that makes for quick access in and out. Oboy’s trading hours are 7 days a week, Monday to Friday from 8am6:30pm, and on weekends 8am – 6pm.

Your chance to win perfect beach holiday
For years, the 17 kilometre stretch of white sandy beach has been Queensland’s best kept secret when every other pocket of sand along the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and the North Queensland beaches have been built-up, rebuilt and developed to the point that vacant land is a rarity. Moore Park Beach Community Association President Alan Davis said the wonderful family environment that almost 2000 locals call home will not remain a secret for much longer. “We have been fortunate to live in one of the best beachside towns in Australia. We are also lucky that for years we have been able to get away with it without anyone else finding out!” Mr Davis said. A far cry from the racing city with its many busy attractions, Moore Park Beach in contrast provides families
and couples with its own attractions giving people the chance to escape the ‘rat race’ which is causing so much executive stress. Local families are enjoying the new services to the area in the form of a new primary school, restaurant, shops, and a tavern with children’s play area. The Community Association’s hall is another source of pride and provides a place for many public functions and events including the annual Arts Festival. Moore Park Beach also features excellent fishing, crabbing and boating opportunities along with the stunning stretch of white sandy beach, patrolled by award-winning surf life-savers and a thriving little nipper squad. Moore Park Beach is alive with local wildlife and birdlife and

kangaroos are often seen grazing on the beach reserve and on other grassy parklands in the area. Turtle watching is a favourite pastime for locals, who can experience first-hand the laying and hatching season right under their noses on their own parcel of beach. Mr Davis said the Community Association, Lions Club and Fishing Club are proud to have extremely active community members at Moore Park Beach, with everyone pitching in to make the town increasingly attractive to families and holiday-makers. “The clean air, sounds of the ocean, low traffic and all-weather roads and of course the people, are what make

Moore Park Beach the perfect place to settle down,” Mr Davis said. “It will not be long before the word is spread about our extraordinary beach paradise.” The town is now growing because of what Mr Davis believes is a “more cosmopolitan” approach to lifestyle and business at Moore Park Beach, with people constantly breathing new ideas into the area. Now is your chance to WIN as Balanced and Moore Park Beach give you the opportunity to win a 3 day holiday stay at one of Moore Park Beaches gorgeous Maxi Huts for up to four people. Have you taken your Financial Fitness Test?
By Alisa Cork If you are one of those people who has a good handle on all facets of your life, including your health, your work and your family, you might now want to consider how organised you are financially. An expert in her field, Amanda McCall has been in the financial services industry since 1987 and is a strong believer in becoming financially fit. “Most people are looking after their lives really well and have control over their home life, their education and work responsibilities, but don’t realise that sometimes things do go wrong,” Amanda explained. According to Amanda, the real question is: are you prepared for that possibility? With a string of qualifications including a Diploma of Financial Planning and an Associate Diploma in Business Accounting under her belt, Amanda is certainly well qualified to give the advice you might need on how to become financially prepared. Amanda’s role is to help her clients create a crystal clear plan for the way they want their future to be, then create, manage and protect their wealth. “Wealth creation and insurance go hand in hand, so a large part of my business is ensuring clients enjoy peace of mind by sourcing the best insurance for their specific needs to eliminate future risks,” Amanda said. “It’s not about being pessimistic at all; it’s simply about planning for those possibilities and putting safety nets in place.” Amanda recommends that all her clients and colleagues take the Financial Fitness Test to assess where they stand. Take the test now by asking yourself these questions: • Do you have a structured savings plan or are you just making ends meet? • Do you use credit cards wisely and follow a budget? • Do you understand the benefits of compound interest and dollar cost averaging on long term investment? • Do you know what your risk profile is and do you only make investments that match your profile? • Have you structured your investment portfolio to take advantage of tax benefits and concessions? • Are you on track to paying off your home mortgage with 10 years? • Have you considered using the equity in your home to build wealth faster? • Have you consolidated your debts to take advantage of lower interest rates and fees? • Can you account for the whereabouts of all your superannuation money and understand how this is a tax-effective way to fund your retirement? • Have you insured your income to protect you if you are unable to work due to illness or injury? • Can your family get by financially if you were to pass away or become permanently disabled? If you have answered ‘no’ to more than four of these questions, Amanda believes you could benefit from speaking to her about improving your financial fitness. To take advantage of a complimentary financial planning consultation, phone Amanda on 07 3356 6929 or 0412 447544, or email her at amanda@averys. com.au.
A Minute on Your Mortgage BY GRAHAM DOESSEL Making your payments In these difficult economic times it is so easy to put off making your home loan payments, but this can have far-reaching negative effects. Let me give you a couple of examples. • Most lenders will charge you a higher rate of interest for the period your home loan is in arrears. This means, even when you do make your payment. You’re probably likely to still be behind due to the arrears charges. Depending on your lender. This can get out of control very quickly. • You may be charged dishonor fees, by both your lender and your financial institution. • Being late with even one repayment can seriously affect your ability to refinance your home loan for a period of up to 6 months, as most conforming lenders will look quite harshly on your inability to meet your commitments. It can cost you hundreds of dollars in hidden fees and charges just for being a few days late. What can I do? Communicate, Communicate, Communicate - If you know you’re going to be late, call your lender in advance and work out a solution. Often, many fees can be waived just simply by contacting your lender first. The more you communicate with them, the more likely they are to be able to help you. Don’t get stung unnecessarily, talk to your lender! Graham is the Founder of Mortgage Now, Australia’s largest exclusively nonconforming brokerage. 10 Simple Ways to Reduce the Clutter By Kay Marco
How Financially Fit Are You?
home, something old must go
Clutter seems to just sneak into our lives and homes. One day your house looks fine, and the next your couch has disappeared under a mountain of “stuff”. Here are some easy ways for you to start to reduce the clutter in your home. Remember it didn’t get cluttered overnight, so it won’t get cleaned overnight. Take your time with it. 1. Don’t Declutter more than one area at a time 2. Never pull out what you can’t put back in 30 minutes 3. Every time you empty an area, clean it before putting everything back 4. If you haven’t worn it or used it in 12 months, get rid of it 5. If it’s been broken for more than a month, throw it out 6. If it’s past its use by date, throw it out 7. Set the timer for 7 minutes each night before dinner for everyone to put their belongings away. 8. If something new enters your

What the Debt Collectors don’t want you to know BY GRAHAM DOESSEL
If you are being harassed by debt collectors, too scared to answer the telephone and have the weight of the world on your shoulders. Then read on, because we’re going to tell you what the debt collectors don’t want you to know! The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) have issued a guideline on debt collection. It includes reasonable conditions such as: • You should only be phoned between 7:30 AM and 9 PM. • You should not be contacted more than three times per week without your permission. • You should not be contacted at work, unless there is no alternative. • Your financial affairs cannot be discussed with your family friends or employer. • You, your family and friends should not be abused or threatened in any way. • You should not be threatened with court action when there is no intention of this. If you think you’re being harassed, you can complain to the office of fair trading and you feel you’ve been threatened or a debt collector refuses to leave your home or workplace contact the police. If the creditor threatens to prosecute you in the criminal courts, don’t worry, being in debt is not a criminal offence. If you would like information on how to freeze your interest and late charges, and how to get the debt collectors off your back, check out www.prolegal.net.au or call 1300 856 882. your stars
February Horoscopes by Dadhichi Toth and www.astrology.com.au Aries Your over eagerness may result in you overestimating your abilities between the 1st and 4th. Work colleagues will appreciate your enthusiasm but may not take too kindly to you trying to persuade them to do things against their will. Listen more than you speak in the first few days of the month.
Taurus You’ll feel amorous and extremely affectionate between the 5th and 7th. You’ll receive as much as you give in your love life and will enjoy some intimate time with those you feel closest to. Don’t rely on physical gestures to gauge the depth of a person’s love however.
Gemini Around the 8th you mustn’t expect something for nothing. Watch out for secret enemies and for those who may want to undermine you. This is a period where you may not be able to trust others as much as you usually do. Someone, perhaps a friend, is demanding financially more than you can give and it will disappoint you.
Cancer Drugs, alcohol and other pharmaceuticals need to be monitored between the 2nd and the 12th. Check your tolerance and sensitivity to these things even if they are prescribed by your doctor or health practitioner. If you happen to be feeling a little out of sorts may well be some sort of intolerance to these medical prescription
drugs or would you believe even some foods that you may be allergic to. Leo You can expect a tremendous amount of success in your work or even at home in the first and last week of the month. For those of you who are ambitious you can acquire a new post or start an educational program which will bolster your ego and sense of self worth. Remember to use this wisely. People will turn against you if you start showing off and bragging too much about your accomplishments. Virgo The period of the 8th to the 14th is a wonderful time to stimulate your relationships and you can expect a great deal of sexual satisfaction, mainly through your exploration and sharing with a loved one. An excessively lustful streak needs to be fulfilled so hopefully your partner is feeling the same way. If not, you may need to look to greener pastures. Libra Indecision is the greatest waste of energy but this is exactly how you will feel between the 21st and 26th. A work or financial matter may leave you up in the air. Choices and more choices make life a little difficult but you mustn’t be afraid to listen to the advice of someone you trust. The secret in making the correct choice is to do what you love rather than chasing the buck.
loose ends, to get out and about and generally avoid anything tedious. You’ll be successful at work, so don’t be irritated and bide your time until providence concludes these things in its own good time. This is a month of action! Sagittarius There’s much more confidence and stability in your work due to the continued presence of Saturn in that area. Demanding responsibilities can be tackled with a creative twist thereby making life a little more bearable for you on the work front. In romance, you may feel a little cool and distant from the one you love. This is a brief cycle and should pass by the second week of the month. Capricorn You’re able to use your words with maximum impact now but you mustn’t steamroll people who don’t have the same level of drive or intellectual ability. After the 25th you could run into a few disputes just when you thought you had a deal
Scorpio Mars makes its energy powerfully felt in your zone of travel and daily chores so you’ll be impatient to tie up all those

sewn up. This is not about being right but about respecting others’ opinions. Try to be more tolerant and this will work to your advantage. Aquarius You are in a lucky phase due to the placement of Jupiter in your Sun sign. Not much should go wrong just now but you need to slow down and recharge your mental and emotional batteries if you are to capitalise on these great planetary transits. Around the 15th you need to monitor your finances and make sure you haven’t paid too much to something. Pisces Expect changes in your romantic life to be exciting but also a little harrowing particularly between the 20th and the 28th. You need to investigate someone you meet before giving your heart to them. Don’t be lured by the promise of shallow words. Look to the actions of people to understand who they really are.

Kayak craze on increase
By Alisa Cork “Absolutely anyone can do it!” Experienced kayaker and manager of Viking Kayaks Alex Bennett believes that a visit to his store in Chermside is definitely worthwhile if only to see how far kayaks have come over the past two decades. “So many people I talk to, come in and say they want a certain type of kayak that they perhaps grew up with, that in modern terms has been updated to a new generation of cleverly designed sit-on-top models,” Alex said. Viking Kayaks are one of the largest manufacturers of sit-on-top kayaks in Australia and have been manufacturing kayaks for more than 15 years at their own factory by experienced craftsmen who know the sport insideout. “There are 11 different kayaks available that are suitable to be used by anyone from 5- 70 years old. In fact many of my customers consist of those in retirement, that are travelling around Australia, and many families looking for something to take away on holiday or keep the kids amused at the beach. Our kayaks are for everyone from people who have never paddled before, or have not paddled for many years, right through to people who are into the new craze of kayak fishing.” A passion close to Alex’s heart, Kayak fishing, is widely known as the fastest growing water sport in Australia. As Alex explains, kayaks can have a custom fit-out, to suit someone who wants to paddle out and cast a handline to catch whiting or bream, fish the freshwater dams using an electric moter, right through to the fisherman or woman who wants to chase big mackerel, tuna or Snapper offshore using some of the more specialised fishing kayaks to do it. The sit on top kayak is designed so that you are not enclosed and feature a fully draining cockpit so they cannot be submerged. The new generation of sit on top kayaks are stable, fit onto most sets of roof racks on almost any vehicle and involve no licensing, registration or other costs in Queensland. Their other feature is the internal storage so you can take your fishing equipment with you or even a picnic for the family day out. Alex says one of the reasons that Viking Kayaks can offer a specialised and individual service is because the company is run by people who have been in the industry for many years. Alex himself is an experienced kayaker and believes this makes a big difference when people come looking for the best vessel for their individual needs. Viking Kayaks offer a 10 year written manufacturer’s warranty as standard with all its kayaks, and have two factory direct outlets, one in Chermside and the other on the sunshine coast, along with other highly skilled distributors around Brisbane. “I encourage everyone to simply come and have a look, have a sit on one, because these kayaks can be completely different to what people may expect” Alex explained.

MELTING MOMENTS IN PHOTOGRAPHY
By Alisa Cork Ivy Photography is a business run by Vanessa Woodrick & Alison Telfer McDonald, cousins and great friends. The girls started their business 5 years ago and have grown from strength to strength based on their quality and professionalism. The name of their business was inspired by their Nanna Ivy who was an artist and had a wonderful way with people. “Ivy was an amazing lady who made such an impact on both of our lives so it seemed the perfect name for us” says Vanessa. “Needless to say, our grandfather Elton was delighted with the name choice!” ‘Relaxed, natural photography capturing melting moments’ expresses exactly what these two creative and talented women have achieved with Ivy Photography. Ivy Photography specialise in children, family, wedding and school photography. The girls love people and pride themselves on being approachable and friendly to work with. When photographing children and families, Vanessa & Alison like to use natural settings such as the client’s backyard or local park. Fantastic photographic results can be achieved when children and parents are at ease within their environment. “It’s common for us to walk away from a family shoot with grass and dirt stains on us because we love getting down to the kids level and having fun” says Alison. “It’s all about capturing those candid moments not just working to a formula” Alison said. “We like to go with moment and let people feel comfortable enough to show their true essence”.
Balanced - your health, your wealth, your lifestyle
Vanessa & Alison have developed relationships with many clients who return to ask them to photograph each stage of their lives. Starting off with wedding photography, clients then return for their first pregnancy and subsequent baby shots to family portraits. Vanessa & Alison pride themselves on developing good relationships with their clients. “We feel privileged to be given the opportunity to photograph these special moments which become precious family memories”. The girls also photograph at childcare centres, kindergartens and primary schools. They differ from the larger school photography companies in that they offer a more customised approach. They use natural settings within the school environment and take that bit of extra time chatting with each child to ensure that they are relaxed and happy. “If it means spending more time with each child then so be it. We want parents to love their school photos and be proud to display them rather than file them away” says Vanessa. “With digital photography there is no excuse for the class shot having eyes closed or heads down. We take that extra time and care so that each child looks good in their class photo”. Ivy Photography find that their school photography has lead to numerous family photography sittings as parents see the quality and warmth in their school images. The girls welcome the opportunity to discuss your photography needs. Ivy Photography can be contacted on (07) 3855 5107. Ivy Photography are offering a half price weekday sitting of $50.00 and a free 6x8” image special. (valid until end of Feb 09).
