8. WILSON HALL Our campus’s keystone building and the centerpiece to our quad, Wilson Hall remains an iconic symbol of JMU. Every day when students are traversing Main Campus–whether on their way to classes, social activities, or just passing through–Wilson is a steady reminder of the tenacity and spirit of the university. 9. CARRIER FOUNTAIN Located at one of the most beautiful parts of campus and just outside Carrier Library and Burruss Hall, the Carrier Fountain is a flagstone structure at JMU. Often used as a space for photo-ops, the fountain remains one of the most memorable locations on campus to our students and alumni.

7. JAMES MADISON James Madison is pictured wearing a face mask. As the author of the Bill of Rights, Madison outlined the protection of our basic liberties as Americans. In the pandemic of 2020, wearing a facemask is associated with protecting others. The JMU community came together with great strength and hope in order to lift each other up. We supported one another with a collective spirit of compassion and unity. As the author of the Bill of Rights, James Madison fought for the protection of civil liberties for all Americans. We are stronger because we faced these obstacles together and supported every student as only Dukes can.

10. VALLEY HALL During our sophomore year, we lived through not only a pandemic, but a turning point in civil rights history. After collecting many signatures for petitions and meetings held by the JMU Board of Visitors, it was unanimously voted for JMU to be on the right side of history. In turn, buildings that originally honored Confederate leaders were changed to erase any reminder of America’s history of oppression and racism on campus. 11. TRAIN Every morning during our freshman year and on-campus experience, many of us may have been woken up by the train that runs through Main Campus, stretching from Grace Street all the way to The Village and Hillside. The front of the train reads the number “245” signifying the exit taken off I-81 to get to JMU. 12. MOUNTAINS Surrounding JMU is the beautiful scenery of the Shenandoah Valley. Happily settled, everyone at JMU enjoys the incredible views from on and off campus. One thing is true about our lovely home: no matter how tall the mountain is, it cannot block out the sun.
