Class of 2025,
Just two short years ago, we arrived at Massachusetts Maritime Academy not knowing what to expect regimentally, academically, or socially following the COVID-19 pandemic. Being Cadet Candidates for the first month, we worked tirelessly to prove to ourselves and others that we belong at this Academy.
The following two years, we learned this school’s customs and traditions, about our majors, and received real-world experiences through internships, co-ops, experiential learning, and Sea Term. You should feel a sense of pride and accomplishment that we have less than two years left at this great place.
With that comes a tradition that has been a part of the Academy’s history for more than a century, our class rings, and the Ring Dance ceremony.
Your Class of 2025 SGA Representatives have worked hard over the past few months to come up with a design that was not only special to our class, but a time stamp in our history here at the Academy. The main detail within the ring is the Patriot State II. For the first time in our school’s 130year history, we will be sailing on a brand new, specially designed training ship to improve the future for Merchant Mariners. Behind it is the railroad bridge, a symbol of the Cape Cod Canal. Shining through is a sunrise to remind you of those morning runs and PT during Orientation. The sunrise also is a symbol that even when times are tough, every day is a new day to conquer and make a difference.
The class ring has been earned for generations by cadets for their years of hard work and service to the Academy. During Ring Dance, you will dip the ring in the ceremonial water, taken from the seven seas around the world as a tribute to the generations of seafarers before us. You will then own a piece of history and a symbol of your time here at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
In closing, we have all earned a spot here to call ourselves Cadets through hard work and determination. As we continue to develop as leaders in our field, we can reflect on all the unique memories we have all made together. As you finish up your time here, I hope you continue to work hard and exceed all expectations so that you can graduate with a top-notch career. Lastly, I encourage you all to take part in the tradition of the class ring and Ring Dance. Even though our 4 years will come to an end, our class’ memory will be carried by our class ring forever. Thank you and Go Bucs!
