Where is your favorite kitesurfspot? For me, the best surfspot is the Mertasari beach. This is also the beach I work at. What is the most dangerous thing you have experienced whilst kitesurfing? Oh, there was an unhook accident. I couldn‘t unhook my kite properly whilst going upwind, so I lost my board, the kite wasn‘t hanging in my harness and I was dragged through the air. Do you have any upcoming competitions? Yes sure. I‘ll be attending my first competition at 26./27. of August 2017. It‘s on the east coast from the Tabuon Island. Upcoming competopn , I got 3rd Female Ch
What are your future goals? I am on the way that I want to be right now. I am hoping to find a place than can also forgive my good and bad sides. What should change in the kitesurf-scene? The Government should be more aware and supportive of the extreme water sports community in the future.

Sanur Female Kitesur fer Photo & Text: Stefanie Wagner
What are you doing workwise if you‘re not kitesurfing? I work as a kitsurf teacher at the Rip Curl School in Sanur. How long have you been kitesurfing? Mh, let me think about it... I started kitesurfing about two years ago. What‘s your reason for kitesurfing? For me it‘s not just a sport, it‘s a new life. It always presents me with happiness.
12
What do you need to ride a good wind? To ride a good wind, i need a little bit of courage and just little of a curious feeling.
Are you accepted as a female kitesurfer by the male kitesurfers? Of course. I bring my own pride, everywhere I go. Do you have any rituals before kitesurfing? Every time before I kitesurf, I ask myself for permission and inner strength.Patius hocchus et; neruntem ex simunicum nonsularbes niri, tum, sessultor
What‘s your reason for surfing? I think, for me,surfing is one of the most important things in my life. It‘s freedom. It‘s so peaceful and takes away all the problems on my mind. Where is your favorite Surfspot? For me it‘s the homebrake babyreef. It‘s not far away from my home. What is the most dangerous thing you have experienced whilst surfing? That was in Serangan. The sky was dark and it was raining very heavily. Because of that I could not move. When I finally made it back to the shore, I cried. It was overwhelming. Have you already participated in competitions? In 2014 and 2015 I was part of the Rip Curl Grom Search. Unfortunately you compete against a big attendance and there were many surfers which were simply better than me. But since in this competition is for 16 year-olds and under, I can‘t participate anymore. I see my future in surfing much more hobby-wise and just for fun. What kind of goals do you have? Where do you want to be in five years? In 5 years, I‘ll be 22. So I think, I‘ll be studying at university. My goal is to become a translator for japanese.
Anastasia Dawnetta Podussie - Tash D.O.B: Januray 2, 2000 Board Size: 5.8 “ Style: Regular Photo & Text: Stefanie Wagner
What is your full Name? Anastasia Dawnetta Podussie Do you have a Sufer-Nickname? Yes, of course. It‘s Tash.
What do you think should change in the current surfer-scene? The trash in the ocean is a big Problem and it‘s very annoying when I surf. The people don‘t care about the ocean. It‘s killing the habitat of the fishes and all the other animals in the sea. People must get more aware ofwhat they‘re doing and rethink their actions. We need to keep the ocean clean! Are you accepted as a female surfer by the male surfers? The most people I see whilst surfing, are male locals. So yes, I think so. But I don‘t know what they think about me. Do you have rituals before surfing? Oh yes. Before I go into the water I do an offering at the beach and pray for my safety and the kindlyness from the gods. As a balinese native, I believe in a special god for the ocean. Bali is the island of the gods, so there is divinity wherever you are. And especially for girls, when they are on their period, they should not go into the sea. It‘s like they corrupt the ocean with their blood, that is what I believe.
Where do you live right now? I live in Metasari, Sanur What are you doing workwise if you‘re not surfing? I graduated from school three months ago, so now I‘m a student. Next year, I would like to study in Japan. How long have you been surfing? Mh, I started surfing four years ago.

Lifeguards at Pererenan Beach These hero’s of the sand and the sea make sure that everyPererenan Beach, Photo by Deni one can safely enjoy their time at the beach. Lifeguards are the very foundation of every coastline, since they are in control of everything that happens in and outside the water. I interviewed Wayan, he is a lifeguard from Canggu at Pererenan Beach, and has over 10 years of experience as being a lifeguard as his profession. ‘As a lifeguard you have to love your job and you have to love the people who come to the beach, even if they think they are the champions and ignore your instructions’ Wayan says. Lifeguards must exercise, they must always be thinking ahead of situations the might occur. Also it is very important that you are always alert because there is just so much that can
necessary to know which people might need happen at any given second. However, the extra help. reward is huge, people who come here really Fidinillah, Instagram : denifidinillah_ respect the work that you are doing and they Wayan closes the interview with stating that are very grateful for all your efforts. He also it takes a lot of training to become a lifeguard, really likes to talk to people and listen to evand that you have to know all the ways of reserything they have encountered, as he calls it cuing people. Ordinary people or surfers might ‘their travel stories’. think they can do it as well, however, making mistakes is very easy and can bring your own Wayan continues to tell that the lifeguard life in danger. That’s why we need this hero’s, station at Pererenan Beach is fairly new, and they do important rescue missions normal that they already save some people here. people like me cannot possibly do. They use rescuing equipment and a jet ski to save people that are in danger. He states the Onne Jelier, MyRedEnvelope Pererenan Beach is a water sport area, but is not really meant for swimming, they have put up red flags where you can swim and practice water sports safely. Who doesn’t like a good reggae rhythm while having a drink at the beach? It is fair to say that music enhances the experience people that go to the beach to chill out. D’Sunshine will make sure of that! It is a reggae band that travels around through Bali trying to perform as frequently as they possibly can (mostly 6 days a week) so they can spread the positive reggae vibes everywhere! First I asked Bee the lead singer and guitarist, to give a short introduction about himself: He is Balinese, he used to be a surfer, but he felt that he wanted to spend more time on his singing, and the composition of his own songs. He started working in a hotel where he did not find happiness, because his true hobby was music. Then I figured that he would like to earn money with his hobby, he chose to make reggae music because it suited with the island life.
18 18
Besides guitar Bee plays other instruments as well, but that is just to kind of play around with. Besides doing a bit of surfing and a lot of reggae, Bee also likes to go shopping. Because of the amazing variety of shopping centers in Bali he can basically go everywhere and find
new unique things everywhere he goes, also he gets some of his clothing from the surfing, scooter, and local community. The good thing about being in these different communities is that they can allow as many people as possible to hear their music. Bee says in the end that he thinks his work is very intense. However, when you rest enough and you are happy with what you do and how you do it, the energy comes naturally. Onne Jelier, MyRedEnvelope

Tourists on the road. Two Dutch guys came to Bali on the 23rd of August for their internship, neither of them had ever driven a scooter. On their first day, the scooter rental company delivered two scooters to their house. The man asked “you know how to ride a scooter, right”? Yes, of course! The tourists didn’t tell the truth because one of them they did not have a license. Shortly after the man left, the boys wanted to go and explore paradise, but how to start the scooters? They turned on the ignition and pressed the start button. But this didn’t work, unaware that they needed to press the brake as well. After 15 minutes they figured let’s just use the kick start. Finally, the scooters let out a small roar and the engines worked! As we all know it can be quite tricky to figure out how these beasts work. This they noticed at their first crossroad, they waited for all the traffic to move on. But the traffic didn’t move on, Bali traffic never ends, to get to the other side of the road one just needs to drive and hope for the best. After waiting for 5 minutes they got impatient and decided to just drive. One of them opened the throttle, while still holding his rear brake. Totally unexpected the scooter shoots over the crossing, losing all control over the scooter and nearly crashed into the building on the other side. “dam tourists, always creating problems”. Still not fully realizing how to start a scooter one just started kicking the kick start, it completely jammed up with the foot peg, he didn’t fold out the foot peg. Both of them realized this wasn’t good. For 10 minutes they were trying to unjam the two levers, when a friendly local decided to help them and asked if everything was okay. The local unjammed the two levers and explained to fold out the foot peg first. Great, now one of the two scooters worked! The other tourist did as he was told, fold out the foot peg then kick start. For some reason this didn’t work. The friendly local walked to him and said: just press the break then press this button, it also starts (“stupid tourists”).

ASUS Tropical
Summer 2017
The event which was held on the beach of seminyak Bali on 10 september 2017 was held by ASUS (Association of Surfing Seminyak), which was named Celebrating its 17th anniversary, the Surfing Association of Seminyak (ASUS) held a surfing contest located in Seminyak Beach.
In collaboration with Real Action Forum (FAN) Seminyak, the contest was also brimming with the attributes of the struggle to reject the reclamation of Teluk Benoa as a message of indigenous villagers of Seminyak Village to refuse the reclamation of Benoa Bay and continue to inflame the spirit of the struggle.
This surfing contest is in addition to finding new surfing seeds in Seminyak, as well as to promote Seminyak Beach which has good waves for surfing as well as scenic sunset views.
Chairman of ASUS, A.A. Putu Satria insists that as part of Indigenous Desa Seminyak ( Seminyak Village ) , they will consistently and firmly reject the reclamation of Benoa Bay with other Balinese people
After the event, the committee held a big meal as a form of closer fellow ASUS organizers and some people who follow the course of the event, this contest was won by Arya Gunata aka Corox

KEDUNGU
SATURDAY BEACH PARTY To a Kedungu Beach goer stumbling upon the surf competition on September 16, it may have been surprising that the Kedungu Beach Party was the first big surf competition organized by the local surf community. There were around 70 competitors (69 men, one woman), multiple judges, and hundreds of spectators lining the beach and the rock wall above it. There were just under ten foreigners from a variety of different places including Russia, South Korea, and Australia. Chok, the lead organizer of the event, said that “the goal of the event was to try out something new, something bigger.” He was originally hesitant to commit to leading the competition, but was convinced by the younger surfers in the Kedungu community. Chok revealed that it would “not have been possible if it were not for the collaboration between the older and younger surf commu-
nities of Kedungu and the CSC Boys and PSC Boys surf clubs.” The success of the Kedungu Beach Party is a testament to the willingness of the different surf groups to come together in order to create something new and exciting. Once enough interest was recognized, the organizing committee was able to recruit enough sponsors to back the event. The competition was more than just a competition. There were local people with stands set up to sell their handmade products as well as a row of locals selling food. The DJ kept the atmosphere lively and the announcer kept the crowd amused. It ended up being a tough battle with lots of great surfers, but in the end Riman from the Canggu surf community came out on top. Celepuk of Prerenan, Lod of Kedungu, and Edo of Prerenan were the runner ups. Overall, the Kedungu Beach Party was a great success and will hopefully be the first of many surf competitions of its kind. (16/9)

Batu Bolonf Beach Canggu Bali
Minang Surf Corner is a group of surfers who come from West Sumatra, a region famous for its Rendang. They give surf lessons at Batu Bolong Beach in Canggu, North Kuta, Badung regency, Bali. Everyday these surfers teach local or overseas tourists who want to learn to surf and feel the euphoria of the Batu Bolong waves. These surfers started giving lessons on Batu Bolong Beach in 2015, but before they came to Batu Bolong they taught at Kuta Beach, Seminyak, and worked as tour guides in Mentawai. They chose to teach surfing at Batu Bolong because of the good waves, friendly people, and beautiful beaches. At Batu Bolong, visitors can experience the waves above the surfboard and also watch the sunset. They don’t just teach for money but to spread insight about how surfing is good for health, a way to be close to nature, and to recognize more surfers and foster a sense of love for surfing sports in Indonesia so that the popularity can increase. “My lesson was memorable, I am very happy and jealous of Bali’s beauty. I promise to return to Bali once again,” one of the foreign tourists said after a surf lesson from Minang Surf Corner.

Sunda Surf Corner
Coming from a beautiful beach with great waves that are a favorite for both local and foreign surfers, Juan and Riko are originally from Cimaja, Sukabumi District, Pelabuhan Ratu, West Java. Now, Juan and Riko live in Bali. The people that work with Sunda Surf Corner like to share their intellect about local surfing with local and foreign tourists. With their surf skills, Sunda Surf School offers group and open surf lessons for tourists visiting the Batu Cenang Beach, Canggu, North Kuta, Badung Regency, Bali. The waves are perfect for surfers, and the beaches are beautiful and clean. The friendly local workers make the guests feel at home.
The lessons are worth it, as a lifetime hobby can be born. Also, there is a satisfaction for the instructors to be able to share their surf expertise. The goal is for the love of the sport to increase. Their journeys as surfers have not been. Before teaching, they were lifeguards in their home area of Cimaja. They learned surfing from their friends which led them to where they are today. They participate in surf competitions in Indonesia and occasionally get awards. They dream of participating in competitions abroad. Their hope is for the government of the Sukabumi Regency to work with them to promote Bech tourism in the village of Cimaja.

Let’s Talk Through Photos (MBLF) is one of the basic photography techniques education activities to representatives of each community group in the village. The representative is called a village photographer. Not only the basic techniques of photography are in possession, but also about writing. At this time the activities are carried out in Karangasem regency, Bali. Exactly in the village of Bunutan. The village photographer team itself consists of 8 people, representing every group in the area. This activity is supported by Reefcheck Indonesia and the Coral Reef Alliance. The MBLF program lasts for 6 months. Starting from April 2017 until September 2017. While this has been running for 6 months. The main purpose of this activity is education. Photography as a universal language,
villagers will be educated to voice something that may take the form of happiness, pride, complaints, problems and their hopes to the public through photography. Through photography, the MBLF Team hopes to conduct environmental, economic, social, health and cultural issues through the active participation of the villagers themselves. Awareness is not easy yet to instillfor villagers. Through this educational project, people’s awareness will be built through story telling that they will grab, with the aim of building sustainable resources, but not fithout forgetting the locality they have. Local initiatives related to area management will be well documented in this activity. Through the initiative, we will identify the challenges and opportunities for the development
of conservation area program in karangasem. Local people are very warm to open up and tell the issues that exist in their environment. The positive energy that the MBLF team brings together synergizes with the hope that is stored in their hearts. Build public awareness about the environment around them. Especially in coastal areas as well as sustainable resource utilization, which later will be managed by the community itself. August 10-11, they are able to do an exhibition in the hamlet of Banyuning, Karangasem. During 5 months sharing with MLBF team, villagers have mastered the technical of photography and writing. As a result, the exhibition with their own work and a strong local point of view can be enjoyed in the exhibition.
Good intentions will certainly be welcomed. Proyek edukasi foto oleh Andi Perdana Kusuma bersama Coral Reef Alliance dan Reef Check

20 Years of Soul Surf photography exhibition by Piping Irwanan
From September 22, 2017 to September 24, the Indopurejoy Hostel was transformed temporarily into an art gallery. Twenty-five photographs of varying sizes lined the walls of the empty courtyard and dining area, leaving the visitors convinced they were in a full time gallery as opposed to sleeping place for world travelers. The event, called 20 Years of Soul, was a celebration of Piping Irawan, a surf photographer of 20 years. Piping Irawan is known by the surf community for multiple accomplishments including founding Magic Wave Surf Community Magazine, competing in surf competitions, organizing surf competitions, and working as a surf photographer. Despite being a successful photographer for many years, 20 Years of Soul was Piping’s first photography exhibition. “It’s something I always wanted to do, and now we can do it”, Piping said. Each night was busy and filled with fun. As if being surrounded by beautiful surf photographs was not enough, the people could listen and dance to the live music, get a tattoo or piercing at the booths that were set up, and play outdoor games brought by Prost Beer. On Saturday night Crazy Horse played live which was quite special for everybody there.

20 Years of Soul Surf photography exhibition by Piping Irwanan The event attracted a diverse crowd, first there were the hoste goers, all gretefull for the opurtunity to be involved in a local event and celebration. The majority of the people receiving tattoos and piercings were foreigners. There were also many local people who came to support Piping. There were peoplo because of Crazy Horse and people who came from the tatttoo and piercing communities. The diversity of the crowd is what made the event so special as people from different cackgrounds and places were able to connect and bond over their interest in the photographs. The hightlight of the exhibition had to be the parties that took place late into each night. Prost beer sponsored the event, providing 20 boxes of beers for the first night alone. Prost also provided outdoor games that were crowd pleasers. There were also cocktails offered the second and third night. Alcohol was flowing and the crowd was happier for it. Two Germans that were staying at Indopurejoy Hostel used their past experience as barthenders to mix drinks and keep the crowd happy. From the street outside, there’s no doubt walkers would be able to hear the screaming along to song lyirics. If they decided to follow the voices, they would find a mob of people dancing along to both the live music and the music being blasted from the speakers, the parties didn’t end until early the next mornings when the music finally died down and people trickled to bed. I had never really been one for water sports. I have always been in love with the water, but never quick to enjoy the adrenaline filled offerings around it. So it was no surprise to myself that I was hesitant to try surfing for my first time. After an internal battle, I finally came to my senses and realized: “I am in Bali, the surf capital of the world. I am working for Magic Wave, a surf magazine. I am being offered a free surf lesson. What am I waiting for?!” My teacher’s name was Wendy. He is a local surfer boy that gives lessons to hostel goers from Indopurejoy hostel. Right from the start, I could tell that he knew what he was talking about. He helped me get the hang of how 34 34

to stand up in terms of foot and hand placement. My confidence was growing little by little as Wendy was giving me pointers and encouragement. Repetition was key, as we practiced the motions more than 15 times. My nerves rose again as we went to the water. Wendy must have sensed this, as he said “Everyone can surf if they want to. If you think you can’t, you can’t. But if you decide you can, you can.” These words influenced my mindset for the rest of my lesson. I replayed them in my head constantly. I realized the important of all of the repetition of the movements on the beach when I suddenly
forgot them right as I was about to catch my first wave. But just as I was going to ask for a reminder, I heard Wendy behind me: “Paddle! Paddle! Faster!” I thought to myself, “Okay, here goes nothing.” From muscle memory I was able to remember the footing. On my first wave I stood up! I was surfing! Over the next 45 minutes, with the help of Wendy, I was able to catch many more waves, not without falls and stumbles though. I look forward to my next surf lesson and am happy to have found a water sport I enjoy! Johanna Hattan

Mango Beach Bar is a great place to go to relax and grab a bite to eat for lunch during a day of surfing. The Mango Bar offers Asian Fusion, Indonesian food and Barbecue. There are also delicious, refreshing juices on the menu. The restaurant is right on the beach, offering both outdoor and indoor dining. There is a waitstaff with a full bar. The bright colors and wall art contribute to a fun atmosphere. Customers have claimed the lobster dishes and chicken satay as the favorites, both being a little pricey but worth it.What makes the Mango Bar stand out though is i t’s double identity as both a restaurant and a reggae bar. Reggae music is played on loop, and Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, the famous Balinese Reggae Band Joni Agund and Double T plays cover Reggae songs, and Balinese Reggae. Overall, the Mango bar is a perfect spot to kick back and relax with a nice seafood meal and good live reggae music.

The sea breeze, friendly staff, and tasty food all make Izakaya a worthwhile restaurant to eat at. Theseafood dishes are always crowd pleasures at this little oceanside restaurant. There is both indoor and outdoor seating, a full waitstaff, and a full bar. The decor is simply, and the atmosphere is casual. Izakaya is a great spot for both lunch and dinner. It is vegetarian friendly also which is always comforting for vegan or vegetarian visitors to hear before going out to eat! Definitely stop by Izakaya if you are looking for a family friendly place right on the beach to relax and get a bite to eat for lunch, dinner, or even late night snacking! It’s a great place to refuel after a long day of surfing. 35
